Hello guys!
Here I am, seeing tons of reviews on Android P and I actually like it quite alot but I have some few question which I hope I can get through this thread hopefully! I would appreciate it
1. How can I back up everything on my current Oreo where in case something happens I can just go back?
2. If I update through the phone instantly, will all my contacts, apps and all other information still be there?
Basically i'm mostly scared about getting my data wiped since I have everything flawless made, with contacts, settings and so on, I do hope maybe you have more tip for me than I asked for - I assume you know which point i'm trying to head aswell!
Would appreciate everything!

If you are rooted, make a twrp backup of your data partition and save it to your pc. If you are willing, you can then fastboot the DP4 with the -w flag removed. This should put you on DP4 with all your apps and data in tact. However, beware of bugs! If you choose to go back to 8.1 Oreo, you'll need to clean fastboot the latest 8.1, which will wipe your phone. However, after you install twrp and root again, you can then restore your data backup via twrp which should put you back to where you started.
If you are not rooted, you'll need to sign up for the beta release, which will give you an OTA that will wipe your phone, and you'll be on a clean install of DP4. If you opt out of the beta, you'll get another OTA that'll wipe your phone and put you back on 8.1.
And there ya go. Piece of cake

Appreciated it! Well I did use the Google backup which was enabled and went through that basically.
I have never rooted but I applied Android P now through Beta Google site. Works charmless now! However there is one little thing that is missing and it is seconds (Where the time is) :'(

Indeed!
I did find an link : https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/...e-spotlight-heres-bring-back-system-ui-tuner/
I do not hav an idea though what and how I use:
Code:
adb shell am start com.android.systemui/com.android.systemui.DemoMode
EDIT:
Download QuickShortCutMaker
In the search bar (in the app) type in "Demo Mode"
Click on the "System UI" option
Click on the "System UI demo mode" option that appears after clicking on "System UI"
Click the "Try" button
There you go, you can now access the system UI tuner again, without having to install nova launcher
I tried this and worked flawless!

Sorry but that's incorrect. DP4 OTA does NOT wipe your phone. Leaving beta program to go back to Oreo does.

Hello,
Thanks all for the great site, sorry to ask this if its all ready been asked but there is so much information here I just cannot make sense of it all and don't where to begin.
I am working on the Galaxy nexus GSM for an employee and we had to unlock and root it to get rSAP working with his car.
I found here a one click solution (cannot find it anymore) after installing the Android SDK and finally getting the Drivers right (not easy) it worked and I unlocked the phone and rooted it. rSAP works!!
Unfortunately this set the phone back to default.
Now the employee is constantly receiving the 4.0.2 update notification (cannot turn off?) what he cannot install (dead android guy every time)
So my question is, what is the best way I can update the phone to 4.0.2 without losing all the data, apps and settings and then make sure the update notification reminder is turned off?
Thanks for any help!

I would load the latest AOKP rom, you can find it on here. Then he won't get any update notifications and it has Google autorestore feature which means once he logs into the device his apps and settings will be restored. Would that help? AOKP rom will bring the device up to 4.0.3 by the way. You will still be able to use the ASDK to install drivers etc.
Hi, thanks for the lighting fast reply..
I tried a search but cannot find that ROM, could you maybe point in the right direction?
will installing that ROM delete everything?
Yeah it will because you should wipe data and cache before flashing in CWM recovery. Do a backup of everything with Titanium before wiping. I wouldn't bother backing up apps cos the autorestore will download them and install automatically once your user logs in.
Here you go
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402341
Be sure to flash the GApps zip file straight after flashing the rom. You know what I mean?
Let me know how you get on. I also modded the Kernel, I am using Franco's and it is insane.
Hi Jd,
I really am a noob and do not think I can undertake such an action..
The instructions there are very minimal...
Let me put it is this way - Is there any way I can easily ensure that the update notification is turned off - without having to wipe the phone and start over?
Cheers for the help man!!

Unfortunetly not afaik. Someone told me you can mess around with an updater-script file but like yourself I am pretty much a noob to so I don't know.
I would repost and have the topic as something like "disabling ota update notifications" and then link to this post. There is a good chance that someone here will know a solution. That is if there is one John, I have not heard of one though. Best of luck.

Erm, I would definitely not install a custom ROM onto someone else's phone, with or without their consent unless the phone owner was technologically-minded and knew their way around the phone! I would assume that since they offloaded their issue to someone else, they do not belong to that group.
What I would suggest is to keep it as stock as possible. Grab the factory 4.0.2 maguro image (ICL53F) from Google (http://code.google.com/android/nexus/images.html). Back up apps and app data & SMS (I wouldn't bother with system data, I've only had problems when restoring this afterwards) using Titanium Backup. If there's only minimal user installed apps without any useful data, just letting Google's servers restore missing apps should be fine in lieu of Titanium Backup. Make a nandroid (via CWM) in case something hits the fan when you're flashing.
Once you've done all of this, flash the factory image and reapply root. The phone should now be on 4.0.2 (removing annoying update notifications) and will still receive future OTAs instead of being stuck on a static version of a custom ROM(!!!). I have heard that CWM can cause troubles with OTA updates so I would remove it once you've completed all of this as it's likely the client won't need it anyway (drop reboot-from-recovery.p back into /system/ and it'll restore stock recovery). Oh yeah don't forget to install Titanium Backup (stop all other app downloads in the market for now), restore apps and SMS. Done.
If you don't know how to flash the factory image, follow this tut: http://androidtobe.blogspot.com/2011/12/galaxy-nexus-installing-ics-402-from.html

THAT is the best advice in this thread, keeps the phone stock and up-to-date so the only time he'd get an update notification is when 4.0.x is pushed out
The ONLY thing I'd say is if you don't wanna lose the data, when you get to step 6 of the guide linked to above leave the -w switch from the update line. So instead of typing:
fastboot -w update image-yakju-icl53f.zip
You'd type:
fastboot update image-yakju-icl53f.zip
Hey everyone. I am relatively new to the Android world, especially in terms of rooting and installing custom firmware. I've been running off of nightly builds of CM10.1 for about a month now, and my Google contacts were not syncing the entire time, even though everything else was working fine. On another forum, a user had suggested deleting the "com.android.providers.settings" folder within the data/data directory and then rebooting the phone. This not only didn't fix the problem, but my device is now barely usable. The home button, notifications, lockscreen, quick settings panel, and who knows what else no longer works. Cyanogenmod wouldn't even find an update when searching manually, and I was unable to mount the device to my PC. I was able to re-download a nightly build and upload it to my cloud service and install it from there, but the device is still crippled.
Please feel free to criticize me for being an idiot and not being more cautious before deleting a system folder, but after, any advice as to how repair my device would be greatly appreciated. Outside of what I have done, I am absolutely clueless. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to help me before I do something else to mess it up even further.
i'm assuming you did a full wipe or at least wiped data and both caches when you flashed the update?

if you dont have a backup to restore, you're going to have to boot into recovery and wipe data, cache & dalvik and flash a rom/gapps.
you can play around with trying to fix this all you want but you'll likely end up doing this reset/reflash in the end.

I have a completely stock phone & I was using nova launcher from day one but I turned back to the default launcher today and noticed a strange data in the 'shelf'. It was showing that I have low %age of storage left. At first I thought it must be a bug but then after some time I checked the storage in settings and thereafter confirmed this using the app "DiskUsage".
Could anyone help me out here? Kindly have a look at the screenshot I'm attaching.
In short, System data is using 27.3 GB of storage!!!
I suspect it may be due to the flash that I did some time back when I returned to complete stock from a rooted OnePlus 3. Though I followed the official website instructions.
Thanks guys for reading this message & I know someone out there will know about this as I'm not that lucky to encounter a completely unique bug :good:

Latest build should fix this.. If not do a clean install and stay on the latest build. Also if the issue persists try to move to EXT4. F2fs still has loads of weird issues..

Well, I got my latest .5 update yesterday and sadly it didn't solve it so I guess I have to format my phone again. Man, that's really a pain in the A. By the way, is this a common occurrence in OnePlus 3 software?
As far as ext and f2fs is concerned, I don't remember manually formatting my phone to f2fs so I guess it was nougat update which did this!
Thanks man!

hmm, I'll wait till the O update for a clean install as setting up few particular apps (mostly banking & two-factor authentication) is really a boring/huge task for me, plus few apps have just NO backup solution like the now-defunct but awesome keyboard Fleksy, Adguard user filters. I really think Android needs a good global backup function to sync basic things like android settings, SMS, Call logs.
Meanwhile, if anyone know a solution which doesn't include formatting the phone, please do tell me !

I remember, it's UI was very complex and had a big learning curve but despite all this, isn't titanium backup a root only app?

Have a look here: https://www.xda-developers.com/xiaomi-redmi-note-5-pro-mi-5-mi-6-mi-mix-mix-2-mi-note-2-miui-10-global-stable/
Just download the rom for the Redmi Note 5, and then install it manually. It's the Global version, btw. I did this with mine and it feels even more snappier. Nonetheless, there is some behaviour with the navigation bar, and perhaps some notifications won't arrive to your lockscreen because there are notification channels per app now. I highly recommend looking for those channels (just hold the notification for a few seconds and then tap on "All categories", and then config each option. If for some reason problems are still showing, perform a factory reset via Settings > Advanced settings > Backup and restore.
Hope you find this useful

In theory, you shouldn't lose any data. My recommendation, perform a backup using Google Drive (Settings > Additional settings > Backup and restore, and then choose Google backup, not MIUI's).
As for photos, videos, WhatsApp messages and stuff like that, my recommendation is to backup your WhatsApp chats with Google Drive, then set Flight Mode on and move each folder of the internal storage to a SD card. Only after having done this, remove your SD card and perform the update. It's your best choice so as not to lose any data.
After your phone is back on again, only remains moving back those folders from the SD card to the internal storage. Easy peasy

Anyone running Android Q beta 2 ? Can you make a comparison to Pie in terms of speed or apps that crash or hang? TIA
I have no apps crashing and no apps unable to start. Performance and battery are identical to Pie.

How best to backout of the AndroidQ beta2?
Installed but Android Auto is playing up so want to go back to v8
Can't mount system partition R/W on Marlin using TWRP 3.2.3-1 once updated to AQB2 (although I did a dirty update by removing the -w erase flag from the bat file before executing.) Guess I'll try nuking everything and rebuilding from scratch to see if the partitions will mount R/W to install Magisk...
Is anyone able to set his own mp3 ringtone on this?

As you can see in this screenshot, it's working just fine. You have to install the latest Magisk canary build. TWRP won't work to do some backups, but you can flash it fine.
Been running Q2 for a few days and is a great daily driver. As soon as Nova paid was installed I have no complaints
and battery life has been excellent. Coming from the Essential phone rooted this has been a pleasant surprise. For 180.00 new
unlocked on Sprint this is a good deal. I also prefer the 16x9 screen and camera.
So, I have some weirdness going on…
I screwed up and tried to install the last P build after getting the ota beta Q update….i had issues (possibly of my own making).
Realized that trying to go back wasn’t going to work so I thought I would just reinstall the Q beta version 2, I downloaded it…all seemed well until I wanted to get to “settings”
I can pull the “curtain’ down and see a few quick access icons (wifi, Bluetooth, airplane mode…) but it won’t pull farther down (second swipe) to see other options and the “settings” gear at the top. I also don’t seem to be getting notifications, I hear them but don’t see an icon.
I also can’t get to the setting that allow me to transfer files.
Any ideas?
Edit: also can't get to my app drawer...
Edit 2: home button doesn't work either...
I got it, it must have been a bad "dirty flash", did a clean install, and all is working as expected...except,
I've got root but can't see my internal storage with ES file explorer (I can see it when using my PC) (or any other root explorer) and can't edit my build.prop (can't save it)

Any ideas?

I did a clean flash, and had the same issue with the internal storage. It was weird though because chrome couldnt see it either, and kept failing to get permission to store files. Doing another Wipe now to try and resolve it...

Please let us know if it works....I hardly ever use my hot spot, but it's nice to know I have it for emergencies!

Wasn't talking about hotspot specifically.... The issue with Chrome is still there, still not able to download anything, as it pops up that it needs permission, I hit continue...and nothing. It normally gives the permission request notification here, but it does not.

Right, I don't think I've tried to download anything with chrome, I want the permissions so I can edit the buildprop file.
Having just checked, I also cannot download anything using chrome, Opera doesn't seem to have a problem, though. I didn't check any other browsers

After clean flash, still having the same issue with the downloads. Going to Solidexplorer shows that the sdcard partition never created a Download folder. Chrome also is completely not working now, so definitely rolling back until it's resolved.
