Google Pixel 2XL Non-Verizon Bootloader Unlock Issue (OEM UNLOCKING GREYED) - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

HELP POST
I've purchased a 2nd hand Pixel 2 XL 128GB, Checked with IMEI and found it is a GOOGLE varient and useing it.
But my "OEM UNLOCKING" option is greyed out i'm currently on jun 5 patch. Tried several methods to unlock but OEM unlock toggle is not enabling.
1. Tried basic method, 2. Tried with factory reset, 3. Tried factory reset without sim and proceeded with no setup,
All these method gave no results. Consulted google but they require Order ID which is not possible to get at this point.
Anyone has any ideas which I missed. I really got this phone for all the customization possibilities and camera.

I thought the consensus was there was no way of knowing by just checking the IMEI. I could be wrong though.

Did you try another sim card?
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using XDA-Developers Legacy app

Try booting into bootloader mode. It should specify what variant it is, and at least show some serial numbers. Contact Google and ask them if they can check for you as well.
If it's a non-Verizon, definitively, you can try flashing the latest factory image from Google using fastboot without your SIM inserted.

Mine was greyed out too until I connected to WiFi, then rebooted. Then I could toggle. Freaked me out too because I bought it off of Swappa. That I was duped for s second.

No, didn't try another sim. Tried sim and no sim. Now on DP4 from yday. Will give this a shot also then.

My bootloader screen picture is also shared in this post. As contacted google through chat, they also said it is non-verizon mode.

I booted the phone, set it up (added my account) using WiFi. After I set it up I noticed I couldn't toggle the OEM unlock. I rebooted, checked again, at that point I was able to toggle. That was just my situation though.

Rana, i'm in the same boat. Did you put in your google account? This is the only difference from mine to djcrystals, I did not add my google account. Gonna try and enter it, but i'm also having this trouble with a certified refurbished.
Edit: did not work. Where did you check the imei number that tells you it's google and not verizon

Also when I had chat with google support they clearly mentioned it is a google varient.
But they are unable to support me without me telling them the order ID of this phn. I bought it 2nd hand from Babgladesh.
So, basically I'm screwed.

Pixel 2 xl OEM allow bootloader unlockewd
Hey really anyone..I have been able to duplicate twice each time a little different... I will continue to test and see if I can find a straight forward example that will yield a quick consistent result...The problem is now when I do a adb reboot booloader to actually unlock it still says not allowed when I was looking at the beauty of the toggle flipped on in dev optoins prior to having to reboot to bootloader ...its not wanting to stick ...soooo....wondering if there is a way to stay in the adb session without the adb reboot bootloader command to get to fastboot...or have some sorta multi user attack at this..can one be connected to the phone through the network adb option and fastboot at same time...or is there a adb command to unlock bootloader rather than fastboot...or can one make a script that could..I assume not I'd or at leat not without writing something above my abilities...but anyways I'm on current as of today for the pixel 2 xl verizon...by total mistake...I forgot the kill the dev slider on auto update system and it was to late...so this is achievable on current firmware. but I can read above where ppl have actually got the toggle off and freaked out too...but Ive done it 3 or 4 times now inside of 30 minutes but cant figure out how to issue the unlock command while its off or iff its impossible...so may not have anything here yet but man it sure looks pretty...I have a video of it and more Im making now to try and help someone crack this already...lol

still at it..
so far it appears to follow toggle wifi..flip over to dev...back to wifi...to dev...so forth and you catch it on...if you toggle the wifi on.. then off....then out and into dev oem option ..the wifi on and off few times then in and out of dev oem option then all the sudden I just am about to hit out of dev again when I notice its flippable......flip it on then confirm...but thats where Im stumped...it on is all I know pretty as can be after confirmation...hmmmm

replacement device unlocking question

So, i broke my direct from google pixel xl, that was unlocked. I had insurance through verizon and they sent me a new one. Now, i know the verizon versions are locked, which is what i didn;t want, but i had no choice through asurion. The phone i received is on NHG47L which isn't the verizon version, but the OEM unlock is still grayed out. can anyone tell me why i can't unlock even though this seems to be a google fi/tmobile build?
i have no put a sim in it yet, i've only connected it to wifi. i'm waiting till i have a firm answer one way or the other.

@Legacystar,
One can sideload any version of security update via ADB. If you've connected to internet and bootloader unlock is still grayed out, then it sounds like you do indeed have a VZW version.

So theoretically, I could purchase a VZW pixel XL never connect to WiFi or data, and get home insert a T-Mobile sim and check the "OEM unlocking" then unlock the bootloader via fastboot. Then once I've flashed recovery and pure Nexus or any other rom install my VZW sim and profit?

You still need to use the bootloader exploit before the firmware updates to 7.1.1, can't just unlock via fastboot like a play store model.

Well I bought the 128gig pixel XL. Didn't let the sales person activate it for me or turn it on. I got it home and pulled the Sim and started it up with no Sim or wifi. My luck the freaking lcd doesn't work. It responds to touch and the phone boots but the screen would not light up a bit. So I took it back and exchanged for another. ....did the same with the Sim and no wifi.... Booted and straight to "About Phone" and of course it's on 7.1.1 already. This is the first phone I've had in 5-6 years that wasn't rooted and bootloader unlocked. What makes it even worse is it's a Google branded phone. I can't believe Google allows VZW to lock it down like this.

Verizon isn't the only carrier to lock it down. Google has never been implicitly root friendly, also I'm sure a partner ship with verizon is to their benefit. Like getting their foot in the door to a wider market. The trade off is the bootloader.

Can't find valid operating system

Received my Pixel 2 XL and was hit with the "No OS installed" issue that was going around. Contacted Google and I can send it in for replacement, but double-checking to see if anyone was able to conquer this issue.
To clarify, Android is not installed, bootloader is locked, can't get into recovery. Would need to have a way to unlock the bootloader without having to boot the OS to check that stupid "Allow OEM Unlock" option.
I think I had this issue tonight, while opening my brand new phone.
I was not able to enable oem unlock because I did not add my Google account.
Once I added my Google account j was able to get into developer mode and toggle oem unlock

How can you add a google account when there's no firmware installed ?
Since no os was loaded from factory I believe this is impossible. The initial factory loading of the os is needed to flash anything. If you get a phone which has no image its doa and needs to be returned.

My only suggestion, if you can get into recovery, try to sideload an update and use one of the OTA images. Outside of that, send it back for a new phone.

You may have to call Google. I think that some versions sold/purchased in the EU have a 6 month waiting period before they can get an unlocking code ?

If it originally came from EE it is locked, but EE can unlock it. Did you factory reset it? That also was a bug and the reset cleared it.

Just to be clear, being SIM unlocked and bootloader unlocked are two completely different things. Are you sure the advertising for it being "unlocked" wasn't referring to the SIM status?

It's likely the previous owner tried to unlock the bootloader and failed. By the looks of things the only current way to fix it is RMA to Google.

What version of android is it currently on?
After the factory reset, did you set the phone up at all, or just go to settings to try and enable it?
Set the phone up, connect it to WiFi and let it update system apps. You dont have to set the phone up completely, but let it connect to the internet and update.
Once thats done reboot it and skip thru any setup then go to settings and enable dev options and see if it is toggle-able.
Also make sure you are using the latest adb/fastboot.

Google Pixel 3 XL OEM unlocking greyed out ?

So I just got my Google pixel 3 XL straight from Google. First thing I wanted to do was root my phone. I've tried everything from restarting device and updating my phone to the latest updated ( I was told that it needs to update before OEM unlock is enabled) but still it's greyed out. Does anyone know what's going on ? I spent a lot of money to finally get an unlocked version to be able to root it.
I'm using At&t as my network.
If anyone has any input, I'd appreciate it. Thank you.

Wondering if you have found a fix for this. I just received my RMA and also cannot unlock due to greyed out OEM Unlock. My first 3XL unlocked fine. Inserted Verizon sim, set up phone and then unlocked in Dev options. Currently Google support say there is no fix and they are looking into it. Just curious where you are in this...

OEM Unlocking Greyed Out- Pixel 3XL

I hate to beat a dead horse here. But in my Verizon 3xl I can switch OEM locking back and forth. It even gives me a warning about unlocking it. I've never tried anything past this point cause I don't want to rework my phone from the begining. Can everyone do this ?! Why isn't mine greyed out ?

8 Pro Amazon & Alexa built in

Purchased the Oneplus 8 Pro at a discount of £154.00 from Amazon UK. Arrived next day brand new from or fulfilled by Amazon. The 'phone is exactly as OnePlus store EXCEPT the bootloader is LOCKED. OEM unlock in developers options is greyed out. Android debugging - OK, Dev Ops - OK. Unable to unlock bootloader = no root. .
Tried the unbrick approach - still no unlocking.
There is no branding of any kind that I have noticed.
So it's back in the box, back to Amazon & wait for Black Friday.
Unless there is another way to unlock bootloader.
Hope this helps others making that money parting decision.
So, many thanks for the input from everyone.
I obviously had a senior moment. I skipped accessing 'tinternet trying to be a smug mister.
I have now got the oem unlock the right colour, the device is unlocked & as I write rooting the unit.
Thanks again for sharing the info. (Return cancelled)

OnePlus phones really shouldn't be locked down like that, shocking from Amazon.
What model / variant is it?
You should be able to adb uninstall apps btw, just Google it.

UK/ europe model, IN11BA OOS 10.5.8 out of box, OOS 10.5.11 back in box.(MSN Tool)
The OEM unlock was greyed out from first start up. My usual routine with onePlus phones: Power on run through initial setup (no sim), enable adb debug (I missed the OEM button 1st time - I'm getting old), enable advanced reboot. Update drivers on PC, then unlock bootloader, root etc;
I agree that it is very unusual for a Oneplus phone to be unbranded and locked down. It may be the Alexa built in partnership the thing is I did not notice the Amazon app on the phone.
It would be great if there is a work round for this before it goes to the courier tomorrow.

May be possible to install another OS via Fastboot.

MSN didn't make any changes.
Would using fastboot to flash another ROM still require an unlocked bootloader, also is the 'lock' for the OEM unlock before any other partitions.

Yep it's true. I had a panic moment this summer when trying to unlock my bootloader. I skipped through all the initial setup steps and never connected to the web. I could not figure out why the bootloader unlock option was greyed out. Once I connected to the web the bootloader unlock option was available.
Yep.

Yep, If you skip all the steps during setup. Developer mode can be enabled, but OEM is grey-ed out. The tooltip below suggests connecting to the internet or inserting a sim.

I just guess I've never done that before..
Surely the first thing with a new phone is popping your SIM in and getting online..
It's assume the OP actually did that.
But good to know cheers.
That also assumes that the device is checking in somewhere.
