Hi, I took my V30 to pool for taking underwater selfies.... After I came out...I washed the device thoroughly with normal water. After an hour, the display started to flicker while unlocking and locking the device. Suddenly, the display went off. Except display, Everything was working, Calls were coming....etc... I kept it aside for few days before taking it to service center. After 4 days... I tried booting it, It worked...Saying battery low and turned off. I charged...then it was perfectly alright.
Still I took the device to service center the next day ro rectify any water damage, but everything was fine. Water did not go inside... All ports were working fine.
I saw a video by Mr.Mobile in YouTube, He also faced the same after putting in pool water.
Did anyone else face this ?
I am worried about IP68 resistance.
i brought mine for under water videos a few times...also washed my phone under running water with soap a few times. no issues.
It is not really intended for underwater use, the water resistance is just for the infrequent accidental splash or dunk. Not like an underwater camera. Also, impurities in water can cause problems like corrosion, once started it can progress even after the phone is "dry" leading to premature failures.

Good to know it can take that abuse.
But I wouldn't do it on purpose for my daily phone.
I know LG shows the wall of falling water in their demos, but I think it's too prove the point if you accidentally get it wet you don't need to worry.

No please go through the IP68 meaning.
It should be able to handle underwater immersion for almost 1metre and 30 mins.
Otherwise it's just water resistant!
Even I am on same page of not intentionally immersing my phone but many people do take selfies in underwater and it's a intended use too!!
People are so weird. Why won't they use proper cam to do this? Phone isn't build to do that. Maybe except Sony when you can use real button to take focused picture.
LG V30 is only sealed by adhesives, sometime they can wear out and lose the seal, i would get the screen replaced if still under warranty

Yea people have been misled by this "camera can take pictures underwater safely" marketing. It's a stretching of the truth. You can definitely do it but chances are that it may fail.
Just because IP68 rating SAYS "maximum depth of 1.5m underwater for up to thirty minutes" DOESN'T mean it should. Have you ever said "challenge accepted" to an ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT buffet? (I have. I shouldn't have........)
It's there in the event of accidentally dropping it somewhere, so you can get it out fast and it will still work. IP68 does NOT mean that you should take it underwater for pictures and videos.
Sony got into trouble because of the ad with their Xperia being shown underwater taking photos. They first said about IPx8 meaning that the phone can be in 1.5m of water for 30 minutes. Then later, they confused everyone when they pulled the ad, and said "our rating was achieved in lab testing, in standby mode. Don't take your phone underwater to take pictures."
Skip to 5:20 to see Mr. Mobile's waterproof experience on his V30
IT works pretty well. If you need to change the glass in the back (it shatters easily IMHO) try to see if LG can do it instead since you might not have the original adhesive that LG uses
Simple advice. The only phones you should ever use underwater on purpose are the old samsung amd sony phones. They had actual covers over all ports. If the ports are not covered you can't expect the phone to be 100% waterproof. I will say though the galaxy s8 is the least waterproof phone ever. 10 seconds in about a foot of water killed my s8. Havent personally dropped my v30 in water yet.
V30 Severe water test!
My LGV10 fell off tge side of my dock. I tried scooping it up but couldn't as it was dark and 12 feet deep. Next day low tide I got it out. Dead as a door nail but looking at gmail shows last received email several hours after it hit the water. So I get a new V30, wouldn't you know it 3 months later it snaps off my sweatpants , hits the deck, slides to the swim platform and in the water! Same deal, couldn't fish it out at night, dark muddy murky water. My fiancee calls it hoping we would see the light, nope not in 12 ft! BUT the next morning low tide 9ish feet deep I manage to scoop it out. As I yank it from the net, I see it buzzing with all the messages coming thru as it got a signal. Finger print scanner worked, Heck everything worked. So I took it out of its case, had mud over it from me poking it under water, doused it with dish washing liquid and washed the Heck out of it with warm water. Dried it with a towel, only side effects was it's speaker which I blew out and after 30 min in from of a small space heater, it was like new. Now I did have a case which had a rubber plug for the head jack and USB power jack. The next day I cleaned all the jacks, micro USB and SIM card, speakers and Mic with electric contact cleaner to make sure. So V30, 12 hrs at 12 ft of water and it's flawless. I'm a believer!
Just an FYI, if your screen ever fails you can enable hardware control mode for basic usage:
Hardware control mode
If the display of the phone is broken or damaged, you can still perform some basic functions using the hardware buttons.
Turn off the phone.
Press and hold the power button and both volume keys together for more than 10 seconds to enable the hardware key control mode.
Press the volume keys to scroll to the option you want, and press the power button to confirm.
To answer a call, you can now press both volume keys at the same time to do so.
To end a call, press the power button during the call.
To stop the alarm, press and hold the volume keys together when the alarm rings.
Tap water is clean. Sea and pool water have chlorides, which are extra corrosive to metals. Washing it afterwards with tap water doesn't insure all salt is removed. Keep that in mind!

I was sitting at my desk at work, and I went to get up and go to lunch. I didn't realize my phone was on my lap, but when I got up my phone fell out of my lap, and on to the carpet. The back came off and the battery came out ("big deal", I thought, since every other time I dropped a phone [not often], the battery came out). I get the battery, get the back, and go to grab the phone, when I realized that the front is basically shattered.
The phone didn't fall more than 3 feet onto carpeted floor, and I was just in awe at that. I still am. Fortunately, Sprint is going to replace it because I have insurance, and apparently there is no deductible which is nice. My EVO hasn't given me any problems though and I see about others who seem to and I hope that the refurb unit lasts longer than this one did. I might also be investing in an Otterbox or something.
Here's a pic of the carnage:

I dropped my phone onto the street when I was getting out of my car. It was from about 3-4' high. I bobbled it as a stood up and watched it crash face down to the ground in what appeared to be slow motion. Picked the phone up off the ground and it only had a few scratches on the corners. I thought for sure the screen would be cracked. I peeled off the screen protector when I got home, and not a single scratch on the screen. I don't use a case for the phone.
I guess my point to the story is that it could just be I was lucky, and you got unlucky. After my incident, I feel pretty confident in the HTC build quality.
Forgot to mention; sucks what happened to your phone. Good thing for insurance.

Thanks.
Yeah I dropped mine onto the wood floor at my house from a similar height as what happened today and nothing really happened, so that's why I was shocked. I dropped my Pre probably 4 or 5 times when I had it and nothing at all happened to it. The Pre was a tank for me, which is surprising since pretty much everyone else who had it complained bigtime about the build quality of it.
I'm debating on whether or not I should unroot my phone before I bring it back on Monday. The person at the store didn't even turn the screen on when I brought it in and approved it, but I didn't know if some flak would come of it running an (obviously not stock) rooted ROM when it got wherever it's going).
Or maybe they'll just toss it into the trash.
with the new what insurance is set up they should be able to fix your screen and hand it back to you IF its just the screen damaged
They'll actually just replace the screen for you at a repair center, instead ordering a refurb.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Could also be that the screen is or works like tempered/safety glass. You can take a ball peen hammer to the center of a sheet of safety glass with little to no affect. But take the same hammer and strike the edge of the glass and the sheet will crumble like the Yankees in a playoff game.
If your EVO landed on its side when it fell, that could be the cause. It's happened in my office many times with people's iPhones. I find that my Ghost Armor works well to diffuse the smaller bumps, though mine is covered in a rubberized case 80% of the time as well.
Hopefully you get a good replacement.

Seriously question build quality? You're kidding, right? ANY glass will shatter when dropped, period. This has nothing to do with build quality. Would you prefer it to be plastic and have a million scratches on the screen?
Now if you were to complain about the screen separation issues, THAT would be a build quality issue. But NO phone is perfect.
I've dropped my phone dozens of times, many from 3 ft, others from 5 ft, I do have a black rubber case on it that only says htc on the back that I picked up on launch day. so far its never came apart or scratched or anything happened that would make it less than mint. I'm impressed with it and honestly don't see a way to destroy the thing unless I wanted to

Drop glass from 3 ft onto carpet, and see how often it breaks. I venture to guess it'll almost never break. I have never once broken a phone and now my EVO slides off my lap and it shatters. And I have no right to question the quality of it?
Don't get me wrong I love it and can't wait to get another so I can continue to play with it, but seriously.

The sample size is rather small but you're 1/1 so I'd venture a guess as to yes. Angle of impact seems to be the common denominator here, a flaw in the design there is not. $10 says you don't leave it on your lap and stand up to go to lunch again...but if you do report back here so we can hear about it again.
Its also possible your screen/glass might have had an imperfection in it as well . I have heard of glass windows in cars shattering with just the slightest of impacts . Granted they are rare , far and few between . Every once in a while the process of making the glass screws up causing weak points in its structure . Its possible this might be the case with yours . Glass was already weak from the manufacturing process and the small fall was enough to cause it to shatter .
I've dropped my phone from my lap getting out of my truck on asphalt. Thought for sure the screen was toast but just a few scuff marks around the plastic edge. second time it fell from waste height on concrete and that shattered the screen.
Otterbox offers good protection but I can't get over how HUGE the cases are. I ended up with Pt case. Just something to sheild the edges/corners a little better.
Thats why I'm calling bs the phone had to hit the desk or something you could slam the phone on carpet and not break the glass by the way if your at your desk why is the phone in your lap mobile porn or something

Hi !
I hv just bought DEFY last week. When I open the box, there is a small sheet of paper claiming that DEFY is actually not waterproof. If interfaces eg USB cover is wide opened, then water will still go in and damage the phone...
Does anyone know anything about it? is DEFY really 'not waterproofed'?
Besides, how can I do zooming using the original camera app?
Sure, water will short-curcuit the ports if they're opened. You want to defy physics eh?
Zoom with volume keys.
how about if the ports are not opened? is it really waterproofed?
as a see the back cover seems to have a 'hole' under the cover lock:S
OH I am so surprised that the volume keys can be used to zoom! thanks so much!
Well it survived a lot of washes, beer and water drop tests so it's fine. Second mic hole can get a bit of water inside, but it won't go further and mic is protected like speaker.
Its "water resistant " not waterproof. Meaning it can with stand some water but not being submerged.

....Not true.. with the ports closed on a brand new defy you should pretty much be able to go swimming with it. Officially it can be submerged up to 1 meter but tests have shown a bit better.. I went swimming with my defy and took underwater videos.

Right on. Claiming to be water-proof is much different than water-resistant. If you've been in the industry of selling such stuff you'll know. It has legal implications so serious makers don't take it lightly.
That being said, many things sold as "only" water-resistant can actually withstand quite some splash.

And just in case you're all still doubtful, the Defy is certified as an IP67 device.
It would not get that certification if it doesn't actually do what they say it does.
What does IP67 mean?
The IP Code (or International Protection Rating, sometimes also interpreted as Ingress Protection Rating) consists of the letters IP followed by two digits and an optional letter. As defined in international standard IEC 60529, it classifies the degrees of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects (including body parts like hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water in electrical enclosures. The standard aims to provide users more detailed information than vague marketing terms such as waterproof.
Solids, first digit.
The first digit indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against access to hazardous parts (e.g., electrical conductors, moving parts) and the ingress of solid foreign objects.
6 - Dust tight - No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact
Liquids, second digit.
Protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against harmful ingress of water.
7 - Immersion up to 1 m - Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion). Test duration: 30 minutes Immersion at depth of 1m.

I use my defy for free beer at bars, its great and people don't believe their eyes haha.
my brother dropped his in a pint when drunk just to show off and the screen was unresponsive for 2 days. My guess is if the covers arent secure over the usb and speaker port then the IP rating is out the window
Isn't that a given?
Would your waterproof watch still be waterproof if the back casing wasn't put back properly?
The covers on the Defy work the same way...

I think the key phrase here was "When Drunk" lol he probably didnt secure the ports like you said. The covers are also susceptible to wear and tear so after a while defy's probably just become regular mortal phones vulnerable to water.. well I suppose they'll still have the durable casing and gorilla glass though.
Also bear in mind that these ratings are probably for just water. Submersion in a detergent solution will probably be bad news, as would "cleaning" the seals with detergent. So don't drop it in the bath!
Beer is OK, as that is not an anti-surfactant

absolutely. but how long is this phone guaranteed at IP67. His ports were covered at the time so my guess would be that they have lost their ability to seal after so much use. The fact hes only had the phone 2 months does not say a lot about the rating.
Image a class 6 sd which meets class 10 standards under some conditions. But it's still a class 6 sd and there's no guarantee for class 10 speed.
Actually some crazy Chinese boiled Defy in hot water for several minutes and Defy survived. Good to know but don't expect Defy can stand anything like.

Ive spilt beer over my Defy and it survived.
What I have discovered is that any liquid spills/submersions result in either an unresponsive screen for a while, or the phone playing up ( ie notification bar going up and down rapidly)
In the case of Beer and other non pure water liquids ( such as soft drinks ) this seems to last longer. The solution to this is to rinse it in water.
The areas that seem to be affected are the small gap around the touch screen/chassis - in particular the small microphone opening, and of course the holes in the back of the phone, if you spill beer in these and let it dry it could leave a sticky residue.
As for water, a quick wipe and dry seem to do the trick, and after a minute or so everything works fine again.
I've read some were that the Defy is water resistant but it's not certified?
I wouldn't purposely get it wet just because it claims to be water resistant.

the 1meter limit kills it. lifeproof will be 2 meters.
I want a case even if larger designed to be opened often with NO PORTS so it can go deeper. I would like 30ft. thats deep enough you can dive down a little snorkeling and if you drop it in shallows its not likely to go deep enough to crush.
It is actually a 2.3 meter submerge for 30 minutes but contstant 1 meter down.
ahh thats not so bad then. not like typical user will stay under that long anyway

Unfortunately, it doesn't float....I let my daughter play with it in the tub, sank to the bottom.
So I finally got my review finished and thought I'd share my opinions on it.
No doubt this is a beast of a case but its not perfect by any means. I've dropped it twice from about 4 feet in height with no visible damage as well as done a few underwater trials one of which was letting my one and half year old daughter play with it while she took a bath. Held up like a champ and build quality is top notch. The case is bulky but not unusable by any means, takes a few seconds getting used to it and after that you're home free. It pockets very nicely in my jeans but I can see it being a problem for people with skinny jeans.
The screen sensitivity goes down with the screen guard and tends to jerk every once in a while so I had to disable pattern unlock and stop using the swype-like feature in the keyboard I use but I'm still able to scroll through webpages and pinch to zoom in pictures pretty well. Call quality seemed great on the receiving end but on my end it was a bit muffled. Same thing happened when listening to music but something that helped was making sure the speaker volume wasn't at full 100%. It can't be completely avoided considering the sound has to travel through a water tight chamber so in my eyes its a decent trade off.
The latch that exposes the power port stopper could be a little less hard to open imo and I definitely put my nails through a bit of pain and bruising after opening it time and time again. Hard buttons worked flawlessly but the capacitive buttons took some getting used to with the lip at the bottom of the case. Overall I would recommend you add it to your arsenal and even if its not your daily driver its good to have for those family outings or outdoor adventures.

Mine was delivered yesterday. I like the case a lot however, as noted, there is room for improvement.
My biggest complaint is that the main body of the case slides easily on hard surfaces since it's is made of hard plastic. It doesn't grip to the surface if placed face up and can easily slide off an end table or night stand if bumped. The face section of the case is lightly rubberized so the phone won't slide as easily if placed face down.
My Seidio Extended case for my Thunderbolt had a rubber exterior with a skeletonized hard plastic cover. Enough of the rubber exterior was exposed to provide some slip resistance. IMO, the Obex could benefit from some exposed rubber areas on the back portion of the case to provide some anti-slip properties.
The positive aspect of the hard cover is that it does slip into my pants pocket easily.

Agreed o how slippery it is..If the material was a little more rugged or maybe have some indentations it would be different.
Also, I dont understand a little why is it that big. Between the phone and the case there is room. They could ve made it maybe smaller and keep the phone tighter but on the other hand we are already working with a large device
How does the mic and speakers portion work? Do you have to uncover flaps or something?
Some additional observations.....
The protective screen cover really affects the sensitivity of the touch screen. Using the phone is starting to frustrate me.
The screen 'jumps' a lot and registers touches when I don't intend to touch. Additionally, getting the back button to register is hit and miss.
I guess for $80 I'm stuck with dealing with this, however, the water & drop protection are more important to me, at least for now with winter weather approaching.
Consider if the reduced screen sensitivity is worth it to you before you spend the $$$ on this case.

nope. those are protector by a membrane. So sound goes out but nothing goes in.
the ports u need to open are charging and head phones
And a little more to add....
I just got a phone call from Seidio! The rep was gathering feedback on the Obex case. I relayed the observations I made in my previous two posts and he said that he would pass it on to his product development team.
I've never experienced this from a company before! I would suspect that other early adopters will get a call for product feedback as well.

its even fragiler than ipad, just one drop from high distance, everything goes in pieces D
I havent dropped this phone since I got it on Dec 31st...
Not really luck but the size, weight, and my Otterbox Defender case seems to be an undroppable setup! Honestly even when the phone has slipped its just impossible to drop. Last second fingertips on the corner edge of the phone, side hand pinning to body, etc, all have ended in no drops throughout the most unsuspecting moments... or maybe I am just lucky or "? reaction-arily? gifted"

I've managed to drop my phone with the Defender while putting it back in the holster, unbeknownst to me it tangled with my winter coat (granted, probably not much of a concern in Arizona) and some time later fell out on an elevator's tile floor. Loud thud, but nary a scratch.
It was the first time, and I've had mine since November.

Hi darkshado, I have an unlocked t889v from mobilicity, and phone could work under wind and virgin mobile.
However, signal is unstable indoors, asu frequently drops to 1 or 2, or even no service at all. I would like to activate lte to take full advantage of the virgin mobile's network. Could you please to forward me a draft guide on how to do it? I know the risk but still want a try....thanks~!
btw, the baseband is T889VVLALJ4, ROM is Jedi 9...
I dropped mine in the toilet (after cleaning the toilet) last week. Without hesitation I reached in and tossed it in the laundry hamper. I yanked the otterbox defender off and started drying it off. Pulled the back off and the battery out. Pulled the s pen out and shoved a qtip in the hole. Remarkably the phone was on and functioning befire I pulled the battery. After I gave everything a good wipe down I blew water from behind the home key, power button and volume rocker. There was also trace amounts in the s pen. Phone still works flawlessly. It didnt even hiccup. Makes one wonder how water resistant this phone is. It was in water for 3 seconds or less and nothing happened.
Noted Twice then replied using SGH-T889.
After careful inspection, a tiny damage found on the top-left of the screen. However, it can be covered with a case and the touchscreen isn't affected at all.

As odd as it sounds thank the screen protector. I had screen protector on my htc incredible and had it fall from the holster running and watched it endo beside me for a few steps with not screen damage. Only to remove it after switching carriers and getting a new phone to drop it from about 16 inched and crack the screen.
Im thinking about cutting the stock otterbox defender screen protector off and using one that adheres to the screen. This one doesnt sit flush so I get noise from it contacting the screen as I type and also dust and dirt enter from around the home key.
Note 2, yeah son!
I'm on my second note 2. Dropped the first one from about 1.5 feet without a case and goodbye screen. So moral of the story.... could have been much worse.

Been swimming in UK loads and the watch stayed waterproof. Go on holiday to Rhodes and its full of water on the first day. Not happy.

You need to be very sure that the rubber plug is in all the way. That is the only way water can get in:crying:
The SW3 is not rated waterproof in the case of saline water....
RTFM
Yesterday I went to the sea, I have been in the water more than an hour with the watch and no problem.
I swim and take mine in the jacuzzi daily
I made s6re the seal was on before I went in. Ive had it in a bag of rice since. I tried it this morning and it switches on now but the touch screen isnt working. Ill try to dry it out more.

You can try to contact sony and tell them it is defective. They should honor the warranty, however they do say never take unrated electronics into salt water. This watch is rated for dips in fresh water up to 1.5 meters. Also, they say once in a while, submersion in a pool is okay if you clean it off afterward.
Rice should work, but will take a while.

I'm too much of a whimp to do that... Cheers to having a jacuzzi though
The IP certifications only covers "filtered" water' like in a pool or like the friend who dropped in the toilet after the diarrhea, sea water is not covered in the waterproof specs.
The IP68 rating on Sony's own web page contains the following footnote:
The SmartWatch 3 is water and dust protected as long as you follow a few simple instructions: you can’t take the SmartWatch 3 deeper than 10m of water and for longer than 30 minutes; and the water should be fresh water. Casual use in chlorinated pools is permitted provided the SmartWatch 3 is rinsed in fresh water afterwards. No seawater and no salt water pools. Abuse and improper use of device will invalidate warranty. The SmartWatch 3 has an Ingress Protection rating of IP68.

Same here, no longer waterproof.
Went swimming last night and water got in, the screen went on and off for a while and after 30 minutes it stayed on. The big problem now is that the touch screen no longer works, making it useless. I think the seal gets lose over time even though it looks fine.
If you take a look at the teardown video, the problem is not with the micro usb connector, it is fixed into a lot of glue so there is no way that water will get in through that part. I bet that the lcd's adhesive loses it's stickiness in time, making tiny holes for the water to get in.
Also, it is forbidden to swim with it in salt water due to the fact that the rubber seal for the usb connector is not waterproof, and the salt water can corrode the contacts in no time.

By the way, what was sony's response for this? Was it covered by warranty?
I'don't swim with it, drop it in the toilet and sh*t on it, I just wash it with soap and water from time to time when it gets dirty so it's good to know their answer.
Thank you!
