Huawei Mate SE as Honor 7X - Honor 7X Questions & Answers

So after getting tired of getting screwed by locked bootloader's and not being able to root by carrier locked or region locked phones, I started looking into Huawei. As far as I have been able to tell, the phones are well made and a steal of a price, but any time I try to research the Mate SE, it just pulls up the Honor 7X. For rooting purposes and custom ROMs, are they the same phone with the same firmware?

In a few days even Huawei (Honor) will stop the unlock of bootloader... [emoji33]
Inviato dal mio BND-L21 utilizzando Tapatalk

Yes, the mate SE (I have one) is basically the same as the 7x. Even on gsmarena you won't find a separate listing for the Mate SE, it's included in the listing for the 7x.
As papero68 points out though, the 'official' path to unlock the bootloader is being removed soon. Just search for info on the 7x and what you'll find will apply to the SE. There are roms being developed for these phones, some are by the openkirin team. I've read also that there may be other ways to unlock the bootloader, once the official site shuts down.
The 7x and Mate SE are exceptional phones for the price. I think development for them is just getting started. It's also possible Huawei might reopen the official unlock site in the future. OEM's have done that before.

So I managed to get the bootloader unlocked despite Huawei taking down the site. Now I wait quietly for some Mate SE specific sub-forums to pop up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much does FunkyHuawei cost?
A: You need to buy credits on the FunkyHuawei website. The price per credit varies depending on the number of credits you buy. Different operations cost different amounts of credits. However, the Root feature of the Mate 10 tool is free, and as mentioned above, Recognized Developers/Contributors of XDA can ask for a free credit.
Q: My phone is bootloader locked, and FRP locked. My bootloader unlock code dosen't work. It won't boot. eRecovery doesn't work. Can you help?
A: Yes. With the Mate 10 this is now a common situation. Contact FunkyHuawei for help in this situation. We'll need to access your computer remotely and the procedure is a little bit complicated, but the phone can be unbricked.
Q: I can't get my bootloader unlock code/don't want to unlock my bootloader, but I want to change my phone to something other than Chinese. Can you help?
A: Yes. Our new FunkyHuawei Rebrand Tool works on recent Huawei phones (Sorry EMUI 8.1 phones not yet supported. Coming soon), to rebrand them to another region even when the bootloader is locked.
Q: I'm not seeing the latest version listed on FunkyHuawei or elsewhere as an OTA. Why not?
A: Huawei has a very odd and unpredictable way of rolling out OTA updates. You can use FunkyHuawei to install the new version immediately, or can wait for the update to be rolled out. It might be a month or more after release until the update reaches your device from Huawei directly. We have no idea why.
Q: Why isn't FunkyHuawei free?
A: Because many of FunkyHuawei's features cost FunkyHuawei money to provide. Features that don't cost FunkyHuawei money to provide, like rooting the Mate 10 or our TWRP build for Mate 9/Oreo, for example, are generally made available for free. There are also bills to pay, kids to put through school, and so on.
Q: I noticed FunkyHuawei in an XDA Portal article!
A: FunkyHuawei loves XDA, and is cooperating with them as much as possible. Recognized Developers and Contributors on the XDA forums are welcome to claim a free credit from FunkyHuawei as well.
Q: I have a different question.
A: This is what this thread is for! Post away!

Help!
I have a german P20 EML- L09 -
Do i need do a rebrand to another firmware to have Dual sim? Which firmware I need?
How many credits i need ? (or can i do it for free)
I have an English P20 EML-L09,
Is it supported for enabling dual sim fuctionality?
It works!!!! P20 rebrand and mono2dual modified. European FW *.132a ....
Yeah the conversion to dual sim works but you lose the volume in your speakers. Nobody tells you that.
So I am now left with a phone that I can only use with headphones for media playback.
So happy now /s
Also, can't do anything about it because now my bootloader unlock code no longer works, and the generator on the Huawei page gives me the same old code.
Team FunkyHuawei, any help?
You're right. Not silenced at all, but the sound starts normaly loud, then goes to very low. Ringer too. But funky Hawaii tells me that they never heard about that issue ???. All should know. Almost for european c432 release

Back to mono sim? (With funkyhawuei method)?
Yeah.
No can do, you need unlocked bootloader. If yours is still unlocked, good for you, try it, it might help. Otherwise...
Last effing time I buy Huawei. Can't even sell it now. The amount of frustration is just not worth it. Not to mention the amount of frustration just to get the latest OTA updates, just having to rebrand or stay with old software for half a year.
No answer from Funkyhawei people. . No advise on their site about this issue!!! frustrating.

Can't get bootloader unlock code

Hi, so I'm trying to get a bootloader unlock code for my 7X, but when I enter my info in the online registration form (https://emui.huawei.com/en/unlock_detail) all I get is the following message and no code: "If you have any questions about the unlock code application, please contact us."
Of course, I tried contacting customer support, as well as the official Huawei/Honor service center in my country, but all the people I spoke with were rude, uninformed, and refused to provide me with a code, even though I sent them Huawei's official statement on the discontinuation of the bootloader unlock program. It says all devices that launched prior to May 24th are eligible for a code, but I was basically told "Naaah, Huawei told us not to give out codes."
Further complicating the matters, my Honor 7X was purchased from China, even though it's the BND-L21 EU version. I really want to get my hands on a code before the program is discontinued. Any help is appreciated, thanks!
Are you sure it's a L21? China should be AL10 maybe you can flash back to AL10 and see if any changes to the codes.

Yep, pretty sure. Bought it off Aliexpress, but it's the European version (or at least that's what it says in settings - BND-L21). I even recently updated to Oreo via Huawei Firmware Finder. Don't know what's going on...
Maybe the seller reflashed the ROM before sending it to you?
Hi,
I'm facing exactly same problem.
In the settings, shows BND-L21, but the sticker on the back of the phone shows BND-TL10 ! @Yanachkov, did you found a solution?
Thanks in advance.
Maybe try contact by email? https://consumer.huawei.com/en/contact-us/?tag=email
I've sent two emails, two weeks and 3 days ago, respectivelly, but no response at all...
I'm worried because huawei will stop the unlock code application service by 2018-7-24, and I would not like to be stuck at EMUI forever...

I've got BND-L24 3GB/32GB
Almost with no hope and contradicting all my expectations, today I've received the official update notification! Even with the BND-TL10 device running BND-21 ROM.
Running Oreo now.
I contacted Huawei and requested a bootloader unlock code. Unfortunately they are no longer providing this information to customers. There are a couple of threads stating you can retrieve an unlock code from DC-Unlocker for roughly $4 but I haven't tried this method yet. Currently on EMUI 8.0 & Android 8.0 with BND-L24. looking for anyone who has successfully unlocked their bootloader using this method.

[question] how can i rebrand my honor 7x to international version ?

Hey There Guys,
Can anyone please guide me how can I rebrand my Honor 7x (BND-L31) to international variant....
Please Help as I haven't got a single update on BND-L31...
Rebranding is not recommended. Lots of things can go wrong in the process. I say you should flash a ROM, it will always have the latest updates.
I recommend OpenKirin's ROMs, especially LOS.

I'm in a similar situation. I just got a BND-AL10 that I'm trying to turn into something I can use in the US. Can't get a bootloader unlock code apparently, I missed it by like 3 days. Am I the proud owner of a $200 brick?

This hwota-bnd has rebranding process in it. Don't remember which oeminfo files are included. Take a look. If other oeminfo files are needed perhaps we can get them.
**Edit
Just looked again, the eominfo file for c185 is not there

But maybe before rebrand, try to install the c185D001 version

I'm also in the same boat. Bought a BND-AL10 from India and not even the 3G or 2G bands of Tmobile is working here in US. I contacted Hawaii several times asking for the unlock code but they don't bother even to listen (for obvious reasons). I managed to unlock the boot loader by paying $5 in dc-unlocker. (google and you will find it but I'm not authorized to post the link here). Now I have the unlocked bootloader but I'm still searching for a solid answer if I can flash another ROM (such as the US version of 7X, Mate SE) on my device without bricking it. Please let me know if you have any update.

Rebrand from HMA-AL00 to HMA-L29?

Hi all
I'm trying to rebrand a Chinese Huawei Mate 20 (HMA-AL00) to the international version but I'm new to rebranding concept. What is exactly? Is it just installing a new firmware or does it have more implications?
I've found this from funkyhuawei where they cleary state that it is not possible for this model. However someone on Mate 20X says he did, in fact is trying to go back to AL00.
Can someone help me to understand how does this works? Will rebranding change IMEIs as well?

You cannot do this unless you have a bootloader unlock code. That's the first step.

Can I Install Global Version L29 on Chinese Version?

Hi guys,
I'm thinking about buying a chinese version of the mate 20x for cheap, much cheaper than the global version. Was wondering if its possible to buy it and then install the L29 global rom. Is this possible? If so how?
.
Not sure if possible, but i dont recommend to change the original rom.
Appreciate the reply. But since youre not sure, does anyone know if its still possible to do this?
From what I understand (reading this forum), this requires unlocked bootloader and root.

Buy Chinese version with global rom. It raises price just about 35 to 50 dollars.

But thats the problem I want to avoid. I want to buy the chinese version without having to pay for the global rom so that i can install the global rom myself.
I will save you some trouble. I made the mistake of buying the Chinese version because I assumed the bootloader could be unlocked and the phone could be flashed. The answer to your question is, "no - you cannot root or flash the Mate 20 X as at this time".
Huawei has locked all bootloaders for all their devices and are no longer offering unlock codes. I have been unsuccessful in unlocking my EVR-AL00.
There are a few threads in this forum and there are developers looking for a workaround but there are none at this time.
I wanted to post a quick follow-up on my previous post. The Mate 20 X Chinese version is the first non-root phone I have owned in more than 10+ years. I will say, unlike my Samsung and OnePlus phones I have not found a need for root beyond changing the default launcher. The phone is customized so you can manage DPI settings (in and outside developer mode), auto launch/keep apps running in the background and even includes a good equalizer. If you have any specific questions about the Chinese model of the EVR-AL00 then feel free to PM me. I'm happy to try answering questions.

Hi dogatemycomputer,
Appreciate the heads up. But regarding rooting the mate 20x, there are threads here that show that you can root it and flash twrp. Am I missing something?

Yes.
Regarding XDA’s stance on Huawei’s decision to stop bootloader unlocking
Back in April, Huawei’s form to request a bootloader unlock code mysteriously disappeared. Late May, the form returned but with a warning that the service would no longer work after 60 days. As promised, Huawei’s form is no longer available, meaning it’s no longer possible to unlock the bootloader of Huawei or Honor devices. This has obviously been disappointing to many users on our forums, but it’s been especially disappointing for us, the XDA Portal team.
https://www.xda-developers.com/xda-huawei-decision-stop-bootloader-unlocking/amp/
Basically you could unlock the bootloader until May when Huewei decided you could no longer.

If you truly had read and understood threads about this, you'd know that unlocking the bootloader is no longer possible. Huawei shut this down, unfortunately.
I researched this before purchasing, as I too wanted the least expensive version which allowed changing the default launcher. The only solution at this point is a new L29, or a used AL00 that has root. Shame that if we want to change the launcher we're limited to the 6/128 version.

1. Broken Google Location History & Sharing
2. No access to EMUI 10 beta
I use the Chinese version and there are some minor differences between the Global and Chinese version but the Chinese version has worked well for me.
Some Google services do not work. The two I have found are OK GOOGLE (always listening) and location sharing via Google Maps.
Outside of these 2 limitations I have not found a difference between the stock Chinese and Global versions. I have been very happy with my Mate 20 X and I have not found a reason to root the phone.

Thanks for your input. I think rooting may be overrated unless you install roms. But even then most roms have issues which convinces me personally to stick with stock.
.
I have no issues with Ok Google or location sharing via Google Maps. My AL00 is on Emui 10.0 & works perfectly, i’m in Europe btw. Of course, the big difference is when factory restoring must install manually the google apps like Play Store, Maps, Google Photos, Chrome, and so on. Otherwise i see no difference between global and chinese version.
