Rebrand from HMA-AL00 to HMA-L29? - Huawei Mate 20 Questions & Answers

Hi all
I'm trying to rebrand a Chinese Huawei Mate 20 (HMA-AL00) to the international version but I'm new to rebranding concept. What is exactly? Is it just installing a new firmware or does it have more implications?
I've found this from funkyhuawei where they cleary state that it is not possible for this model. However someone on Mate 20X says he did, in fact is trying to go back to AL00.
Can someone help me to understand how does this works? Will rebranding change IMEIs as well?

You cannot do this unless you have a bootloader unlock code. That's the first step.

From what I've heard, Kirin 980 makes imposible to do this. Please correct me if I'm wrong since I'm giving up and buying a Mi 9.
PD. I'm selling a Huawei Mate 20 Chinese version. Used for a month ?

bnd-l21 firmware on bnd-al10?

Sorry for the dumb Question but can i install the bnd-l21 on the bnd-al10 version?
Firmware bnd-l21 on bnd-al10 band?
Have the same thing going here. Have you figured out what's the deal with that? Ive went on a 2 day Google hunt and kinda gave up. If you have learned anything about it, please clue me in. Thank you.
I purchased an honor 7x from geekbuying and it was the bnd al10 phone but it is running the bnd l21 firmware so it must be possible. My concern is now around getting updates for the firmware as I haven't had any OTA updates whatsoever since purchasing the phone in December. I'm in the UK by the way.
I bought it from Amazon.in, but since no update after buy, still on B101, please help , model: BND-AL10
IN my device its written BND- AL10 as model, but here why telling as L-21/L-22 /L-34 whats the relation
My config: Honor 7X, Ram 4GB, Rom: 32 GB
Has anybody tried to stuff an updated AL10 or L21 software on this from the Firmware Finder APP? I have the same thing, L21***B101 inside an AL10 device. No effin' update whatsoever since crap knows when.
Looks like you guys need to get in touch with huawei/honor website(hihonors). Let them know the software's wrong for your model. Maybe they can look up your model by serial no.

I already posted there long ago and not a single response was produced.
Also
I also purchased the BND-L21 from China (Aliexpress) (says AL10 on tag but L21 internal) and no updates. I asked Aliexpress about the difference between AL10 and L21. They said they converted my phone from the AL10, Chinese version to the L21 international version so I guess they're identical. I contacted Huawei and they said I would be getting an update over the next couple months and to check for it every few days. Even though I've only had the phone a short time, I'm very impatient to get the update. Does anyone know where to manually get it?
Full firmware is not available from my knowledge

I think that the full firmware is not still available to download for Honor 7X (I saw many guys complaining about it in the community). If the full firmware is available it will be possible to flash your device.

On the contrary, I contacted Huawei support and they told me that the seller altered the software. They said that the seller installed a custom-ROM on my phone that's why it's not getting an update. The AL-10 model is only for China. I'm finding it hard to believe though. That the seller will alter this software.
What about your phone packet?

Yes
Yes, my phone package had been opened. I asked Aliexpress about that and they said they needed to do that to replace the A10 (chinese) version with the L21 (international) version.
I found a site online where I can get the files to do a manual update. They won't let me post the link here (yet). If I don't get an automatic update within the next week or two I may go ahead with this. I really want the gyroscope to work!

Also, I was playing with huawei firmaware finder app. And found Oreo update there but checksum wont match. But when I changed phone version to some other AL-10 it said checksum matches phone. Is it safe to proceed? Did anyone tried that?

[question] how can i rebrand my honor 7x to international version ?

Hey There Guys,
Can anyone please guide me how can I rebrand my Honor 7x (BND-L31) to international variant....
Please Help as I haven't got a single update on BND-L31...
Rebranding is not recommended. Lots of things can go wrong in the process. I say you should flash a ROM, it will always have the latest updates.
I recommend OpenKirin's ROMs, especially LOS.

I surely understand the dangers of rebranding as I've done it before to my P8 Lite but I want updated EMUI on my phone and the variant I own [BND-L31C185D002] didn't even got EMUI 8....
I'm in a similar situation. I just got a BND-AL10 that I'm trying to turn into something I can use in the US. Can't get a bootloader unlock code apparently, I missed it by like 3 days. Am I the proud owner of a $200 brick?

This hwota-bnd has rebranding process in it. Don't remember which oeminfo files are included. Take a look. If other oeminfo files are needed perhaps we can get them.
**Edit
Just looked again, the eominfo file for c185 is not there
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77134788&postcount=6
But maybe before rebrand, try to install the c185D001 version

I'm also in the same boat. Bought a BND-AL10 from India and not even the 3G or 2G bands of Tmobile is working here in US. I contacted Hawaii several times asking for the unlock code but they don't bother even to listen (for obvious reasons). I managed to unlock the boot loader by paying $5 in dc-unlocker. (google and you will find it but I'm not authorized to post the link here). Now I have the unlocked bootloader but I'm still searching for a solid answer if I can flash another ROM (such as the US version of 7X, Mate SE) on my device without bricking it. Please let me know if you have any update.

6gb/128gb China Device could install other ROMs?

Well, I need to buy the 128gb because I need use 2SIMs cards and already came from MI5 128gb near to be full and in Spain, as I suppose outside China 128gb model it is not sell...
After I read all the Threads I can't install the official global ROM...
But with the rollback will could install one custom ROMs?
If is possible to unlock the bootloader, I already ask permission to unlock others Xiaomi terminals... Or they will deny to I can't change the Chinese ROM?
I'm afraid to buy these terminal because I can't find it on Ali... Why? Very Strange
Hope could heard yours is...

Just buy it from TradingShenzhen and choose xiaomi.eu version. Problem solved.
Having the phone (6gb ram /128 storage) from honorbuy for 2 months i can surely say that unlocking the bootloader (officially) was an easy stuff. Install the xiaomi eu rom was a much more easier. Just flashed via twrp. Nothing to be afraid my friend.
I had the phone 6/128gb china version since launch and I've been flashing, china stable, china developer,
Global stable, Global developer. Just make sure you unlock bootloader the official way thru miui website. I know 720 Hours sucks but once its done, your phone will always ask for your xiaomi account instead of some retailer's account.(which is why a lot of people bootloop due to choosing flash and lock instead of just clean all).
Like there is another way to unlock the bootloader...

Many of us have ordered from them. They ship from Hong Kong and Germany (most likely drop ship from their German warehouse to Eu). The Chinese rom is fine too.
You can just unlock the bootloader yourself officially as mentioned above, then flash xiaomi.eu.

The ARB in your Miui and phone already installed ARB = 4 , and it doesn't show itself in the GetVar.
You can retrieve arb level in hex editor from elf file.
Idk the right answer on your second question.
Many people wrote it is possible to switch,
in another side the guy with the rank of "the dev team" from the Miui en forum wrote: its impossible to do yourself, any move from china to global will lead to brick.
I find many posts abt switching and when I asked how they pass arb ppl ignore me as I apply an magic to be invisible.
in my opinion the bad result is also result but probably no one from that ppl want share it ))).
as conclusion either sides have heavy weight no way to detect who is ultimately right.
I decide to check it by my self in 5 days (Xiaomi delay unlock of boot loader).
Of course you can if you have your bootloader officially unlocked and installed the twrp. I've already done it

Do you think I can do what I do without flashing back and forth any kind of MIUIs - oreo/pie, stock/custom, china/global etc hundreds of times during testing fixes?
Never had a single boot problem. I don't flash firmware though!!! Don't need that for testing.
Right now the only problem that exists is if downgrading ROM versions/security patch level chances are you lose your data due to encryption. This is a security feature, not a bug... Data is still decrypted and accessible in TWRP so no biggy.
So your answer is versions don't matter if you backup your data to safe location first... And watch for ARB level! if you flash firmware!!!

Sorry for being a noob, but I'm new to ARB and not exactly a Linux expert. Which elf file are you referring to? I also have the 128 GB 6 GB RAM variant of this device and have installed .eu ROM overtop of Chinese ROM. I also have installed a GSI, however no matter the ROM, every time I run a getvar I cannot read the ARB. Could you can share this method or provide a link to source material where I can learn about where to locate and read this ELF file to determine ARB?

You should have the image of your current ROM.
the easiest way to check the arb is unpack the image and find the script what perform update. in the script you will find
something like this
set CURRENT_ANTI_VER=4
http://ru.miui.com/thread-12941-1-1.html
next is also unpack image and find the file xbl.elf
open it in any hex editor (online or program) and check its value
you can read more here

or just believe you already have it ).

I don't think it will be possible to flash even an official firmware with a locked bootloader.
then I can give up and keep the phone as it is ... I was waiting for some developer to put a global rom and then pass it on my wiev 20 ... I also know that you have to pay to unlock the bootloader ... and in the end I don't know what suits me ... if there are no alternatives I can only sell it. thank you very much for your reply
Unlock bootloader -> flash OEMINFO -> flash global firmware.
This is real, but time is needed. I think there will soon be a way to make Rebrand

Can I Install Global Version L29 on Chinese Version?

Hi guys,
I'm thinking about buying a chinese version of the mate 20x for cheap, much cheaper than the global version. Was wondering if its possible to buy it and then install the L29 global rom. Is this possible? If so how?
.
Not sure if possible, but i dont recommend to change the original rom.
Appreciate the reply. But since youre not sure, does anyone know if its still possible to do this?
From what I understand (reading this forum), this requires unlocked bootloader and root.

I will save you some trouble. I made the mistake of buying the Chinese version because I assumed the bootloader could be unlocked and the phone could be flashed. The answer to your question is, "no - you cannot root or flash the Mate 20 X as at this time".
Huawei has locked all bootloaders for all their devices and are no longer offering unlock codes. I have been unsuccessful in unlocking my EVR-AL00.
There are a few threads in this forum and there are developers looking for a workaround but there are none at this time.
I wanted to post a quick follow-up on my previous post. The Mate 20 X Chinese version is the first non-root phone I have owned in more than 10+ years. I will say, unlike my Samsung and OnePlus phones I have not found a need for root beyond changing the default launcher. The phone is customized so you can manage DPI settings (in and outside developer mode), auto launch/keep apps running in the background and even includes a good equalizer. If you have any specific questions about the Chinese model of the EVR-AL00 then feel free to PM me. I'm happy to try answering questions.

Hi dogatemycomputer,
Appreciate the heads up. But regarding rooting the mate 20x, there are threads here that show that you can root it and flash twrp. Am I missing something?
.
Yes.
Regarding XDA’s stance on Huawei’s decision to stop bootloader unlocking
Back in April, Huawei’s form to request a bootloader unlock code mysteriously disappeared. Late May, the form returned but with a warning that the service would no longer work after 60 days. As promised, Huawei’s form is no longer available, meaning it’s no longer possible to unlock the bootloader of Huawei or Honor devices. This has obviously been disappointing to many users on our forums, but it’s been especially disappointing for us, the XDA Portal team.
https://www.xda-developers.com/xda-huawei-decision-stop-bootloader-unlocking/amp/
Basically you could unlock the bootloader until May when Huewei decided you could no longer.

If you truly had read and understood threads about this, you'd know that unlocking the bootloader is no longer possible. Huawei shut this down, unfortunately.
I researched this before purchasing, as I too wanted the least expensive version which allowed changing the default launcher. The only solution at this point is a new L29, or a used AL00 that has root. Shame that if we want to change the launcher we're limited to the 6/128 version.

1. Broken Google Location History & Sharing
2. No access to EMUI 10 beta
I use the Chinese version and there are some minor differences between the Global and Chinese version but the Chinese version has worked well for me.
Some Google services do not work. The two I have found are OK GOOGLE (always listening) and location sharing via Google Maps.
Outside of these 2 limitations I have not found a difference between the stock Chinese and Global versions. I have been very happy with my Mate 20 X and I have not found a reason to root the phone.

Thanks for your input. I think rooting may be overrated unless you install roms. But even then most roms have issues which convinces me personally to stick with stock.
.
I have no issues with Ok Google or location sharing via Google Maps. My AL00 is on Emui 10.0 & works perfectly, i’m in Europe btw. Of course, the big difference is when factory restoring must install manually the google apps like Play Store, Maps, Google Photos, Chrome, and so on. Otherwise i see no difference between global and chinese version.
