Ghost/Phantom touch on Pixel XL - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I've bought my mom a Pixel XL a few months ago, and over the recent months she complained it handles touches on places she didn't touch.
I've investigates it, and make it short and say it does occur, and I even found a way to reproduce it : scroll in settings screen till it occur.
Made a video about it too:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JCsTuMDvMNHh0CO7sF7yoLFT26uNIhUp/
Does anyone know of this issue?
I've read on some places that this is a known issue on Android 8.1, but is it true here too?
Maybe an update to Android P or downgrade to Android 8.0 will fix it?

Battery drain with 8.1 RTM (which doesn't appear to be bluetooth related)

Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone can help me diagnose a battery drain issue.
I've found mention of the bluetooth driver causing issues on the preview, but this doesn't seem to be what I'm seeing.
Just in case, I've left bluetooth switched on.
I've just received a batch of 26 Surface RTs under the deal that Microsoft was recently running for education.
I'm just trying to decide on the configuration that we will initially run with in the classroom, and have been testing Win 8.0 and also 8.1 RTM on two different tablets.
Both have touch covers, and are connecting to the same 5GHz Wireless N access point.
Obviously, battery life is really important to us, as we need to achieve a whole day of reasonably heavy classroom usage.
Right now, the WIn 8.0 Surface is beating the pants off the 8.1 device.
They both have the same applications installed, and I'm at a loss as to why the 8.1 is so bad.
I fully charged both devices yesterday, and overnight the 8.0 unit lost 4% charge, whilst the 8.1 lost 21%.
I've attached a sleepstudy report from the 8.1, and was wondering if someone could cast their eye over it for anything obvious.
I should point out that battery life was poor on the 8.1 even before I started installing apps, so I'm not convinced that any one app is particularly to blame.
Both units have the latest available updates installed on them.
Thanks,
Andy.
I've been running RTM on my RT for about 3 weeks and it's really hurt my experience with the device so far. From a features standpoint it is quite a step up, but no word about when/if the battery issue will be fixed. I have searched and not found any explanation the change yet. My sleep study stuff didn't really turn up anything to my eye but I'm not much of an expert in this realm.
Interestingly it only drains badly in sleep on some days. I don't really do anything different with it on those days that I've noted either, as I pretty much exclusively use the device to take notes in classes and study them.
Every post about trying to get to the bottom of the issue mostly results in people posting about the Bluetooth bug =)
Glad to hear it's not just me.
I googled and searched on here extensively before posting this thread.
I've checked my sleepstudy report, and I'm not seeing activity in the UART driver area that characterises the bluetooth issue, so I can only conclude that I've got a different issue.
It's a real issue for me, as having Outlook was one of the main reasons we opted for the RT's. I can't go back to 8.0, and I can't roll out with 8.1 as the battery life is so dreadful.
I'm hoping that once it's released officially (tomorrow, I think), then fixes will start flowing.
I have had similar bad experience after upgrading to 8.1 a while ago (not Preview 8.1). Sporadically battery life would tank and for no apparent reason battery would drain while the RT was in sleep mode. This never happened on 8.0. I could let it sit for days without a problem.
On my desktop system I've seen that the mail app is often using up a lot of CPU time (Communication Service) . I can see this draining the battery on the RT.
Since I received a firmware update three days ago and all the updates yesterday it seems to be better on the RT. It is still almost fully charged since my last charge last night. I will only know for sure in a few days of course. Hope this is fixed quickly. And yes, it has nothing to do with the BT fix.
In your case I definitely suggest contacting Microsoft directly. I assume with 26 purchased RTs you will get appropriate support.
Let's hope this will be a problem of the past soon.
cheers
edit1: another day and still going strong. No issues with battery drain so far
I thought it was fixed after updates on release day as it went well.... Had a drain day yesterday. Maybe improved...
I have the BT off and I still not using Outlook. That said, I don't notice any issues with my battery and comparing with another friend of mine we both believe we have about the same or a little better battery life.
I have now noticed the same thing. Left my surfaced on over the night and my drain was HORRIBLE! came back to use it today and it had gone from 80% to 25%! I'm done all the latest updates and am on 8.1

I came back to post mine has been good with no drain for 3 days now. I'm not convinced it isn't going to randomly betray me again though.
I left mine sitting since last night and will check it when I get home. Lets see how good this works.
Known Surface RT upgrade issue from 8.1 Preview to 8.1 RTM
I just wanted to let you know that there's actually a known battery drain issue when upgrading a Surface RT (doesn't affect Pro) from 8.1 Preview to 8.1 RTM. Upgrades directly from 8.0 to 8.1 RTM won't see the issue.
You can fix the issue on affected devices by following the instructions on the Surface support page (Sorry I can't post a link, bing for "Surface RT and Surface 2 battery and power" and you should find it).
I'll copy them here for reference.
Surface RT only: Battery issue when updating from Windows RT 8.1 Preview
If you updated Surface RT from Windows RT 8.1 Preview to Windows RT 8.1, you may notice a decrease in battery life. During the update, the wireless adapter power policy isn’t migrated. Instead, the power policy is set to a default value that consumes more power both during use and in the connected standby state.
To restore the wireless adapter power policy to the correct settings, open an administrator command prompt:
Step 1: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Search.)
Step 2: In the search box, enter command prompt.
Step 3: Touch and hold (or right-click) Command Prompt to bring up the context menu. Tap or click Run as administrator.
Step 4: On the User Account Control dialog box, tap or click Yes.
Step 5: At the Administrator: Command Prompt, enter the following:
powercfg -setdcvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT 19cbb8fa-5279-450e-9fac-8a3d5fedd0c1 12bbebe6-58d6-4636-95bb-3217ef867c1a 3
Step 6: Then enter
powercfg -setactive scheme_current

Considering buying this phone

Hey guys I've been researching about new phones since my asus zenfone 2 broke last month. So far I have only found these phones to my liking because I hate screens bigger than 6 inch and/or phones that are taller than 149 mm,: A2 lite, redmi6, redmi 7A and Nokia 5.1 plus
out of all these only nokia and a2 lite seems to be the best bang for buck, since I couldnt try nokia 5.1 plus anywhere in my coutnry : turkey, I decided to get A2 lite. I would buy 7a but the brand Redmi on the bottom of the phone is even more distracting than notch. Maybe if you have knowledge should I wait for A3 lite, if it will be less than 6 inch that is ?
My concerns are these:
- is the notch distracting when using, I have never used a notched phone before?
- for how long will this phone get updates, and is the android 9 experience stable?
- I have small hands and I wonder if this phone will be too large
I use this phone for about 4 months now. I received it with Android Oreo, but right out of the box I was prompted with the Android Pie 9.0 with April Update. The phone worked flawlessly except:
- a problem with UHC-1 SD card that was constantly unmounting and mounting that was fixed by a Class4 standard SD Card, apparently there is a problem with the power management for the UHC sd cards.
Pictures are awesome - former Sony camera user so I love the quality, the phone battery is great, 2 days minimum between charges.
The phone slightly heats up when used heavily but that is not a problem. Also gets a little warm while quick charge.
The screen notch is not a problem to be honest. It's like a normal FHD display without losing the upper part to the status bar, now with the icons placed to the left and right of the notch.
A new problem appeared this month, with the July update, when you rotate the screen from landscape to portrait the screen kinda blinks and then the animation continues.
Signal is good, wi-fi speed is ok, 4g works ok. Android 9 is stable so far for me, except the new glitch.
The big form factor of the device is not a problem to be honest, for small hands there are a few options. For example if you can't reach the status bar, you can enable the fingerprint swipe that brings notifications down and back up. From left to right, I think any small hands can reach.
Also for the accessories, the iPhone XR screen protector works just fine. And cases are cheap and good.

This is the exact problem I was looking an answer for, thanks for the detail. I really find it hard to reach for the notifications.
One last question: will this phone get the android 10 update when released?

Yes. Android One project make the manufacturer to give 2 major updates and monthly security updates. Until now, every 20th of the month we get the current month security update and some bugfixes.
This phone already got a major update which is Pie. So the last major update will be Android Q so yeah, Mi A2 Lite is on the Android Q update list.

Android 10 update

Any ideas if Samsung finally will update Android on their phones including the new Note 10/10+ fast this year? P30 Pro will have acces to Android Q Beta this September...any news for the Note?
Was a reason i moved away from Samsung phones, i really like the Note 10 + and i really want to purchase it but, can't stand waiting month for the new Android version...
So what you think?
Just get a device you REALLY like, do not waste time thinking about the OS that is the newest

If timely OS updates is high on your priority list, you bought the wrong phone.
I have owned the Note5, Note7, Note8, and Note9. I recall the Note 8 update to Oreo occurred the April after it was released, and the Note9 Pie update occurred in February after it was released (carrier versions, anyway). So you're looking at Q1 2020 for the update.
However, half the time the Android updates contain things that Samsung has already had in their software for a year or two, so... it's not that big a deal. That said, I still am always super excited when it happens (so I get it).
I don't see Samsung getting the Android Q update anytime soon. Huawei is lucky in that sense as they will be releasing the Mate 30 Pro with Android Q running out of box. So it is imminent the P30 Pro will follow.

You are missing Android 10
really if you care about the android updates as soon as possible just go to a Pixel device. on the other hand just buy a phone you like and get the updates when they come, an android update doesn't really change a lot, a lot of what is added to the base android are features that are common among third parties, so for a device from a manufacturer like Samsung all the android update means is you get a bigger number and some of the phones features move from the Samsung UI to base Android.

Not really. We already have dark mode, swipe navigation.
Nothing really excited about Android 10
What I missed the most is the call recorder ability which they removed since android 9. I don't see it coming back in Android 10.

Software is important for EVERYBODY, what I tried to tell you is this: if you like/want a note10 device, it works fine as it is, it will update in due course, if the updates are your most uttmost concern, then a pixel would be the perfect choice for you, it is well known that samsung is never the first to issue updates, knowing this, better get something else
After seeing the YouTube video of One UI 2.0 over Android 10, I can't see anything that exciting. Android 9 (RIP desserts) runs great, and 10 looked like a very incremental update.
Just enjoy your phone you just got it . Q will come orob will get 10 and 11 . Let's get 9 working good before we think of getting 10

You are missing more than that. You are missing the new notifications implementation and battery saving optimisation. A few other added new features. That is why I hate Samsung with their updates. Very slow about 6 months late

I had the Pixel 2 XL and when the update came through my battery life improved which was already good but improvement in any department is good.
Why should you come to this forum and complain about Samsung update when you know how they work?
We all know the update will take some time to be available since the moment we buy it. We like this phone not because of the google update that we eventually will get, but because of the features that not available even with latest google update.
You should buy pixel and iphone then. Or huawei.
Exactly
I've only had one recent "need" for an android upgrade(Wireless android auto), just to find out that after we got it that google had restricted the feature to google devices. After 6 months of google claiming it was the Samsung's issue, even though no other brands worked either, they came out with a "beta" that enabled Wireless AA on other devices, no patches from samsung required.
There are so few important updates in Android these days, it's the least of my concerns.

November Update? How did you guys feel about it?

Just dated to the November update. Whats you guys feedback on it? i just got mine installed....touch and other fixes...lets see.
Since the update, my camera button on the lock screen doesn't work correctly. It does open the camera, but it's under the lock screen so I still have to unlock the phone to take a picture.
Is it just me, or does anyone else have this issue now?
Edit: Really weird. It wasn't working correctly at all, even after a restart. Tried to show my wife what I was talking about because she wasn't having the same issue and it started working. Haven't had a problem with it since.
I have not gotten the update yet. I'm on AT&T. Don't know if that is the reason.
Sent from my Surface Duo using Tapatalk
Youtube TV still has orientation issue with spanning video. Video will not stay in horizontal orientation and would flip to vertical. I have to slightly rotate screen to keep view from flipping orientation. Very annoying.
Camera improvements are pretty noticeable in my opinion
Guys, anyone knows how to manually update our phone with unlocked bootloader? Thank you in advance.
I think the updates are a nice step in the right direction but I have found more issues with the camera when trying to use it. Swapping to the rear camera is not as smooth as it was before (I'm using smooth generously). The swipe away gestures are still not great, after maybe 6-9 months of updates it won't feel so beta to me? Using my Pixel 4XL or iPhone seems so much better and polished, hope M/S will put the work in needed to the software.

so phone is okay. but man...when its on the table...with TWO gyros...it should know what orientation i have it at....i just dont get it. So far phones running a trillion times better to be honest. Android 11 i think will truly unlock the phones potential off the rip.... 2021 lets go....
Any December update? I thought I saw somewhere that Microsoft promised monthly updates.

How much longer will there be ROM development?

I know it's impossible to know for sure, but do you anticipate that Lineage and other ROMS will continue to be developed for the PIxel 2 series over the next year or two? The ROM section of the board seems decently active right now. I'm considering buying a Pixel 2 XL, but don't want to buy it only to have development stop over the coming months. Definitely want Android 12 when it comes out.
if you seriously want 12 when it comes out FWIW, may be better to get Pixel 3 (which has dev/beta images IIRC) since custom dev only kicks off then when Google opens sourcecode. (FWIW Pixel3 also has multiple Lineage device maintainers.) OTOH if repartition, apparently can hack beta GSI onto Pixel 2, tho the tricky shimming/patching wasn't yet able to do calls last I read https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...oid-12-and-any-gsi-larger-than-2-6gb.4311135/ ). DotOS already claims some version of Monet theming engine FWIW. Best wishes
well, just read https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-rates-on-the-pixel-2xl.4329795/post-85593187 who says be wary of Pixel 3 and 2XL is better, so definitely do your research. And whichever, don't get a Verizon one (as can't unlock bootloader).
