I do have an idea on how to do it i just want some clarification.
I will lose the TWRP and Root on the process right? If so can someone tell me a step by step guide on updating? And dirty flashing at the same time? The do's and dont's. Thanks!
You are currently in which build? Beta to stable is not recommended.
Btw, I am using bluspark recovery and it survived dirty flashes for me. Else no worries after system boots, boot to bootloader later and flash twrp image again.
Im on stable build should i trust the OTA that has been downloaded on the phone update itself or just use the zip file and flash it via twrp instead? Thanks
Download zip file
Flash it in TWRP and DON'T REBOOT YET
flash Magisk in TWRP
Reboot
Done
At least that's what I did and the root is still here

Well is it really too hard to explain your problem in proper sentences? So you wanted to root your phone. What did you use? Magisk? SuperSU? Which version? I can't help you if you don't provide information..
I have the same problem. Neither SuperSu nor Magisk works.

supersu not working please help
Use SuperSu 2.82
2.82 works fine for me! Many thanks!
My Steps For Stock OB17 Zip *Same Steps for Magisk V12 Or SuperSu V2.82*
Code:
Flash latest TWRP From Blu_Spark V35 Or Stock TWRP
Format Data Reboot TWRP
Wipe All
Copy [URL="http://downloads.oneplus.net/oneplus-3/oneplus_3_oxygenos_openbeta_17/"]OB17[/URL], [URL="https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=25000"]TWRP V35[/URL], [URL="http://www.supersu.com/download"]SuperSU V2.82[/URL] To Internal Storage
Flash OB17
Select Flash IMG, Install TWRP Reboot TWRP (So Stock Rom Doesn't Replace With Stock Recovery)
Wipe Cache/Dalvik
Flash SuperSU
Reboot = Profit
*Optional*
Take A Backup Of Rooted Boot IMG (If You Flash A Custom Kernel And Run Into Issues You Can Restore Rooted Boot IMG With Ease)
Flash Kernel Of Choice (Beware Because Of No Source Code And Kernel Changes Might Be Some Issues With Custom Kernels)
TO root latest beta an stable version you can follow this guide:
So I've done a lot of reading and there are multiple threads with steps that aren't exactly clear or contradict each other or are outdated. I just want clarification on what I believe are the steps to flash a custom rom (7.1.2 since I can wait for 8) on a brand new Pixel XL.
Setup phone to the point of enabling adb debugging and oem unlock
Fastboot unlock
Fastboot boot twrp RC1 img
Flash twrp RC2 zip in twrp
Reboot to installed twrp
Wipe system, data, caches
Flash ROM
Flash twrp again
Reboot to twrp
Flash gapps and root method (magisk working for 7.1.2 or should I be using supersu? Also which versions?)
Flash twrp again??
Boot to ROM then setup and use like normal
Should this give me custom ROM, root and twrp that I can boot directly to without a pc again? As long as I do twrp flashing after a ROM each time it'll stick? Also, I keep seeing things for setting a pin before initial twrp boot but without spending 4 days reading I can't find the reason for it. Should I be flashing vendor, bootloader and radio for the latest Nougat release BEFORE unlocking or can I do it through fastboot prior to unlocking?
Coming from Nexus 6P and that was my first run in with the bootloader, radio and vendors so I want to avoid issues for myself. Phone should be here tomorrow and want to get down to business right away lol.
Any and all information is greatly appreciated. If all of this is answered in a centralized area please point me to it and tell me I'm stupid for missing it.

Found this over in PN thread. Is it accurate? Seems similar to my process.

Assuming the bootloader is already unlocked and disregarding the unlocking instruction, these instructions are dead on accurate. I personally dont use magisk, but maybe another user will chime in. For 7.1.2 id use supersu 2.82.
You dont have to flash twrp again after flashing gapps and supersu, but its a good practice to have.

Thank you very much. I'm about to unlock and go nuts on my phone. New phones are so fun to fiddle with!
if you want to use magisk you'll need to flash a custom kernel before you flash magisk. Also you'll need a modified magisk zip. Search around the thread you'll find one, the latest version I found was magisk v13.3.
Edit: Just found out magisk is officially support for pixel on version 14.1 Check out the magisk beta thread.
Hey. I have a rooted with TWRP installed OnePlus 5T on OOS v5.1.1
I've been receiving the 5.1.3 upgrade for a while now and have decided to update. Can i dirty flash the package or do i need to wipe system and data? I'm guessing the root will not be retained and i will have to root again but will the TWRP recovery stay intact? Thanks for your answers
I guess you would be able dirty flash.
You have to flash the twrp and magisk root again. If you are going to flash latest Open Beta 11, you have to flash Beta 10 before to retain data.

I have switched from 5.1.3 to beta11 like;
1- download the rom you want to install from oneplus site.
2- also download the stock recovery image from oneplus site.
3- put both files into the phone.
4- flash the stock recovery you downloaded.
5- boot into stock recovery and install the downloaded rom without wiping or formating anything.
6- enjoy your new rom with all your apps and data.
After the above steps you can install custom recovery and magisk again.
I also highly recommend to take a full backup of your phone .

Why was stock recovery flashed? Can the Rom not be installed using TWRP?

Well, i always got an error with twrp. No OS installed or something like that. Tried also a dirty flash with twrp and phone was not able to boot. So i found the way with stock recovery.

Rom can be flashed with Blu Spark treble TWRP V8.78not normal TWRP. And after you flash reboot to recovery then flash magisk 15.3 and no verity V2 or version 3 if your not encrypted either work, I used V2 just fine.
If you try to flash magisk right after rom it will probably give you an error. Reboot only to recovery BEFORE letting the rom boot or you loose recovery, then magisk will flash, 15.3 is the least grievous version after a successful boot upgrading to 16.4 is easy.
16.6 has been giving people grief also.
Hi guys
I've just bought a used Pixel 2XL and now figuring out how to root. Just wonder if it's good to use Magisk stable ver 18.0 to root the pixel 2xl on November update?
Thanks

No worries there either. Running it myself!
just jumped from november to march update using OTA via adb push and after i flash magisk it causes the phone to bootloop.
looks like there is a problem with patching the boot.img from magisk, reflashing the stock boot file the pixel works but no root obviously....any idea?

There are several scenarios you could try.
1. Fastboot into twrp, flash twrp installer zip, flash magisk and see if it boots.
2. Fastboot into twrp, flash twrp installer zip, flash magisk, flash magisk uninstaller, then flash magisk again and see if it boots.
3. Fastboot into twrp, flash twrp installer zip, flash magisk, reboot to twrp, flash magisk uninstaller zip, then flash magisk again and see if it boots.
4. Fastboot into twrp, flash magisk, then flash magisk uninstaller zip, then flash magisk again and see if it boots. Twrp will be gone as well.
5. Try some of the above, but add a custom kernel into the mix.
Sometimes it can take 4-5 tries before you'll get it to boot up with root. Just be patiently persistent my friend and you'll get it :good:

I suggest you install the latest Orang fox recovery if you don't have it or if you don't have custom recovery. Ive had issues with magisk "sticking" bc of the installed recovery. Flash Magisk zip via recovery then reboot to system and make sure it's still there. Make a copy of magisk zip and rename it "uninstall.zip" Then reboot to recovery and flash uninstall.zip. Then reboot to system then again to recovery and reflash Magisk zip. You can also try installing magisk alpha

Most people will have minimum to no experience regarding your situation honestly since its rare to root without the safty of a custom recovery. I think you should ask in the main magisk XDA thread or consider a custom recovery. Its hard to pinpoint the reason in this situation
