So it's the end of the year and I have a week or so off work with time on my hands.
I have a stock Desire, unbranded and not rooted. Yes it is running 2.2 but beyond that it is as it shipped.
So over the last few weeks I have started to note the low disk warning every now and then. Some of this driven by bad mailbox management on my part as I sync with Exchange and the Desire stores all email and contacts in the system memory and not on the SD card. In addition, large applications such as Swype don't help and only certain apps will actually install to SD
I can't help thinking that as I install and then uninstall applications, all the memory is not recovered.
So I have a few options.
1. Wipe everything and start again. This is easy to do and gives me a nice clean install for the new year
2. Root and then try and force further apps to SD (but this does not get around the mail storage)
3. Flash a different ROM. Some of these appear to give me better memory management.
Now this is my work phone so any ROM would have to be 100% stable. I do not have time these days to "fiddle" with settings each time I try and do something with my phone.
So any thoughts?
Which of these options would you take and why?
If it's your work phone then I suggest you to root it and flash it with a custom ROM which supports ext partitions. If you think you can't survive without HTC Sense then flash LeeDroid. For native android interface I recommend DeFroST 6.1 (but not 6.1a)
I've never used LeeDroid but heard that it is stable. I've been using DeFroST for weeks and never ever had a problem.
With ext2 partition support, you can install all of your apps to an ext partition on your sd card, which the phone sees as it's native memory. You'll never ever run out of free space.
Rooting is harmless if you do it carefully. So be careful.
Personally, I'd just do a hard reset of the phone and start again only installing the apps you know you're going to use and try and keep it free from clutter. If it's been fine as it is then there may not be any need to change it.
Otherwise I'd look at Teppic's rooted stock ROM. You can add things like A2SD+ so you can install more apps but other than that it'll be as it currently is so nothing more to get used to.
Alternatively it might be worth looking at something different - either an AOSP ROM or MIUI. I know a lot of people don't like it but, for me, it's the best ROM I've used - and I never thought I'd like it!! It's quick, stable and has a wow factor I've not experienced since first using Sense
Interesting
So I tried option 1 first to see how things went.
I have now reinstalled ALL the applications I had before (thanks to Appbrain) plus the 10MB Flash 10.1 update that I had been avoiding due to space problems.
I have resynced all mail and am back to where I was earlier today.
But
I now have 47MB free storage on the phone compared to 13MB (and remember I could not install the Flash update).
So it does look like Android doesn't clear up after itself (just like Windows). Perhaps somebody should develop an app for that
I am also seeing the phone is a lot more responsive and snappy.
So a wipe and reinstall every few months looks to be the way forward for now.
Thanks
+1 for MIUI, great rom.

Try CacheMate for Root Users Free to clear the cache and free up some of our tiny internal memory. SRSLY HTC? You give us a top-shelf phone, with less than 200MB of internal storage, and a 2GB microSD card. At least mine came with a 2GB card, what did yours come with?
I have also tried MIUI and I thought I wouldn't like it also but after using it a while I love it. It's a fantastic rom.
Having the exact same problem as the OP don't know why space keeps disappearing. my exchange account seems to store every single email instead of deleting them after 5 days like i have set it to?!? Also when apps are deleted the space isn't recovered. might have to do a fresh install again. As i havent wiped anything since the last OTA that i got, maybe that is causing the problems.

To be honest I don't think Exchange is to blame here.
I have mine set to sync all emails (but not attachments). My inbox currently sits at around 500 mails (one of my jobs over Xmas to sort) which equates to about 15MB on the Desire.
I think it is various applications that don't uninstall themselves properly.
Bit annoying this happens. as i have about 15mb free and it won't let me install anymore apps! Might consider rooting...get a HD ROM only thing holding me back is voiding the warranty as i only got this phone in october.
What ROM are you running at present? If you're unbranded (or even on the Vodafone ROM) the RUU is available to go back to stock if you ever need to
Current unbranded is 2.29.405.5, current Vodafone is 2.33.161.2
Yeah running the latest Vodafone ROM. got an OTA update a few weeks back. Might root over xmas when i have some free time. I did it before with my Hero. But i think the procedure is different on the Desire (and too me looks more difficult lol)
Here's the Vodafone 2.33.161.2 RUU, keep it safe as you can go back to stock if ever needed:
http://www.multiupload.com/K0FR1OK301
Otherwise root ahead and see what's about!
Thank you very much!! looks like my xmas present this year is a desire with an HD ROM
I've used the RCMixHD ROM and found it great so I recommend that one
Leedroid's rom has been rock stable and fast for me, I just tried the Z rom by robocik(almost similar I guess to his rcmixhd) and found it lagging ang crashy at times (though I did use a titanium backup although not recommended)
leedroids will work for sure and is save to use if your phone in important to you, robocik's next sense roms are fun to tinker with and good for day to day usage but not mission critical stuff, leedroid's is
Root phone and ues apps to SD,which is the reason why I like android!
We can enjoy the rise and fall in flash rom..
Of crouse, you can choose a stable rom to use rather than frequently flashing.
CM6,Oxygen,and MINI can satisfy your taste.Using backup software can reserve the settings,so you do not have to worry about it.
Whatever, using apps to SD and intall apps as many as you want to.
had my wildfire s about 4 months been rooted with stock rom for around a month.
past few days while texting it seems to be running really slow, like 3 words behind my typing.
tried slowing my text speeding but still seems to crash then wake up and type on its own.
cleared space from 22.5mb to 61mb of rom but still slow.
move apps to sd card, and ran a memory clearer in settings
no background, no fancy apps running, just Lookout security.
any help or info will be thanked?

Did you try a factory reset?
Sometimes when you flash a new ROM (usually when battery is low) it can be sluggish, a factory reset usually sorts it out....
Failing that, sounds like the dreaded lockscreen bug that plagued 2.3.3
there is a solution here somewhere, if I can find it I will link it.....
Found it, if the factory reset does not work, try this, worked for me :

Hi everyone,
I've searched everywhere for a solution so please help!
Basically i've had my note 2 for around 3 months and it keeps freezing (so frustrating).
Surprisingly this happend on stock before i even rooted or anything like that.
I remember installing some game from the app store that started the freezing but i re flashed it on stock and this was ages ago. I went to samsung and they flashed it but they said that they dont know what it is. Without sending my baby away i'd love to get this fixed.
I've tried rooting, unrooting, different roms, clearing all the cashes.. apps to reduce lagg (incase it was something inducing it).
Im really clueless where to go with it..
(Freezes up to 5 times a day)
(On 4.1.2 because of custom rom)
(On Stock rom now trying to fix but still on 4.1.2)
Thanks for all your help in advance!

Hi Broky
Its on stock at the moment and i've taken my case of because i thought it might be that before....
When i was in the samsung store it was flashed to the stock and i opened skype after the flash and it froze....
Dont know if this is much help?
Thanks!
Try super wipe script by zoot.
Then flash stock rom.
Don't tell it samsung or google account.
Play around with it like browse or do anything. If it still freezes then I am sorry then brockyneo is correct.

Could be a faulty ram chip. Or flash chip. I don't think check disk works on flash drives. But if it was a hard drive that's be the fix.

ya it shouldnt freeze if its been flashed back to stock rom, especially through odin as it near bullet proof
maybe try what UtkarshGupta with the superwipe and try again with a stock rom
if not then you maybe looking at a faulty unit :crying:

What firmware do you have? 4.1.1 or 4.1.2? If you are on a safe kernel (latest 4.1.2 for example) you could try "Dummy File Generator" from Playstore. (there are many reports with succesfull fixes on freezes.) Or, better, take a look at this thread, everything you want to know is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2133401

Hey legendberry! Did you fix your problem? I'm having the same issue on a stock rom. Resetting and wiping didn't help so I sent mine for repair but it got sent back to me unrepaired and the issue is still there
I have stock note 2, running 2.1 worked flawless since day 1 (was first release in France). Last 2 days been freezing. Have freed up space in internal and external sd. Still happens. Removed some apps, still happens. Reboot, sometimes it works for while then locks up. Very frustrsting as this is business phone.
......
I am in the same situation, because my Note 2 in the last few days has been freezing with maxed out cpu (as reported by the Cool Tool app).
I am now in the process of wiping everything and restoring in the feeble hope to overcome the problem.
Edit: i have wiped everything by formatting with Odin and reloading firmware, then restoring nandroid backup. So far so good, almost 24h without freezing.
Edit2: 2nd day, started freezing again 0
Same problem here, since 2 days my Note 2 freezes all the time, sometimes with 100% cpu load. Sometimes I can use it for a couple of hours, sometimes after reboot it freezes instantly. :S
I did a factory reset (stock 4.1.2), wiped everything but still the same issue...
Very, very frustrating!
To users above: When did you get your Note 2? I've had mine since Oct 10, 2012.
R: Note 2 constant freezing issue
Me too, phone bought in October 2012.
Today I flashed latest Italian firmware, MB2, and started over. No freezes. Even filling sdcard with dummy file generator, which in previous firmware (French MB2) gave several freezes.
Ok.
Then restored nandroid, data partition only, and wiped cache and dalvik. Lots of freezes again, device almost unusable.
So I thought what's the difference? When freshly flashed phone had Touchwiz, while after restore had Go Launcher.
Uninstalled Go Launcher. Bingo.
No freezes anymore so far.
Weird, uh?
I'll report how it behaves in next hours.
Edit: it was go launcher indeed. It's been updated for a reported crashes reboots problem. Now my device is rock steady.

Currently having the same issue. What i had done is cleanwipe and restore to factory setting (4.1.2).
Just the moment i finished setting up, the problem occured.
My sis has wfs (marvel) that had stock rom for the last ywar and began to rub v slow lately (19mb memory freee;(( ). So i unlocked it and rooted (s-off). Then begun to load different cuctom roms. Most of these show 150mb free ram straight after install and run smooth. However 10 minutes after syncing with apps from google account Im left with 20-40mb of free mem and phone is sooooo slow 15 minutes after reinstalling brand new rom. Of course full wipe, clean cash, dalvik cache is applied before update.
Why is this happening? Dont get me wrong, its not like im installing 100+ apps. Theres literally NO apps on this phone except whatsapp and two other 10megs apps. Thats it. Theres not even fb app on this phone.
Why roms that have description as 'lighting fast' 'superb smooth' etc are so painfully slow and bugged? My sister already asked me to get the phone back to original settings. So I have downloaded stock rom and am ready to get back to original rom. But am I missing here something?
I thought the whole point of instlaling custom roms was to get the whole new speedy and smooth experience with the phone. After what I experienced in last few days is far from it;(
Any ideas? Is it because I should format SD card and use link2sd and similar soft?

BUMP!
My wife has a similar problem on her wfS. I have also tried several roms but they inevitably end up with low memory I have found you can manage this by removing unwanted apps and system apps and regularly clearing the cache and clearing the data every so often for some apps. I found facebook was a big offender for having a large data pool (40+mb) so clearing that helps in the short term.
If any one knows of a good way to free up memory on the wildfire s please share because I have yet to find a suitable long term option for this.
wfs so slow
hey guys,
give a try to cronmod int2ext+.
it s a script.
u need partition u r sdcard first.
then download and flash the cron mod int2ext+.
flash it using cwm recovery.
goodluck.
dont't forget to reply me after trying it
try aopk, fast & smooth!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2262394
keep it slim
I'd also recommend using INT2EXT scripts as mentioned above but make sure that the ROM works with it.
also if you want to keep as much memory free as possible search around for slim or slimmed ROMs as they are generally much smaller than the regular ROMs. they do have less bloatware so you MAY have to install a couple things you like if they're not included but I personally think they're fantastic. just find the one that's right for you.
heres a few links to get you started;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2068879 - the slim ROM series from thehacka1. a good place to start.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2315788 - another great slimmed ROM I was using for a while.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380334 - this is what I'm currently running and very impressed with.
have a go at these and see what you think. different strokes for different folks but they may be what you're after :fingers-crossed:
EDIT: oh, also depending on what you use you can also install slim gapps that take up much less space, like this one;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265564
takes up 10mb rather than 63mb. also a little more info about slim ROMs.
So I'm running into a wall on this.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.ff7g_bike Updated a week ago to 1.2.0, and prior to that it would run fine (if a bit laggy at times). But since installing the update (required to play) it won't run. I'll tap on the icon, it'll load and show in the background with other running apps, but just won't run proper? I even updated to Android 4.4.4 cm-11-20141112-SNAPSHOT-M12-d2lte, from 4.4.2), used the Triangle Away app to reset things so the phone wouldn't appear to be custom/flashed, and still doesn't work.
I tested the update on a friend's S4 (un-rooted) and haven't had the same issue.
Is my phone (SGH-T999) just too old/no longer supported? The S3 is still on the device list: http://help.finalfantasy7-gbike.com/model but perhaps it wasn't updated.
So the last update to 1.4.0 at the end of April took care of the problem, which was great.
However..... they've updated to 1.5.0 today, and I'm experiencing the same exact problem I had prior to that update.
I don't know what to do, if there's anything that CAN be done.
Help, please.
Probably because you are using an aftermarket rom. Only thing I can suggest is to use a TouchWiz rom, or update cm. That zip is extremely old. Try the latest nightly. In case you didn't know, cm12 is available for the s3 under d2tmo in case you want to try it
It's possible.... so far unrooted/stock-rom devices are fine. However my friend let me root their S4 and that didn't cause an issue.
As for updating CM, I'll give that a try. I hadn't checked since March (and CM updater didn't give me any indications of a newer version oddly).
*edit* Ok I used TWRP 2.8.6.0 and updated to cm-12.1-20150614-NIGHTLY-d2tmo (along with gapps-5.1-2015-04-20-15-56-24), during the "Android is upgrading" screen (after a very long time on the CM splash) the phone rebooted.... currently back on CM splash screen... will edit in more details once beyond that screen.
*edit2* Past the CM splash, on "Android is starting".... optimizing apps 3 of 108.... and again with reboot.
*edit3* Again at "Android is starting" now optimizing app 198 of 199.... *fingers crossed*
*edit4* Finishing boot.... ok looks like I need to use a newer gapps... ok, updated to gapps-5.1-2015-06-02-15-19...
*edit5* Well everything appears to be working.... though the G-Bike game still won't load once updated to 1.5.0... it does at least switch to the horizontal position and the screen goes dark longer before returning to the homescreen... but that's about it. :crying::crying: Switching to TouchWiz may have no change either, correct?
*edit6* I've always used the default messaging app, but when I opened it it's seemingly stuck on "loading conversations", I read elsewhere that it may take a very long time to load if you have a lot of texts... which I guess given that one contact has 4,000+ texts saved in that thread, perhaps it's just a matter of time before all previous texts load?
A rooted rom shouldn't affect it. I mean aftermarket like cm or aosp. It could work fine on TouchWiz, especially since it's listed as a supported device. Yes, texts may take long time to load if you have many
Texts finally did load. I'm about to install CM on the S4, to see if the game no longer loads then. If that's the case, then I'll switch to TW on my S3 and hope that the game works afterwards.
Unfortunately I'm under a bit of some time constraint, the 1.5.0 update was for an event to gain a new support character, and that ends in exactly 1hr....
Given the time-frame, is there a "quick & easy" method to flash a TW rom without having to do various app data backups/nandroid backup (I will have to factory wipe, yes?), and not lose much/any data? I unfortunately don't have a high capacity SD Card (4GB, my 64GB one in the S3 stopped allowing write access a few days ago, seems to be an issue with that particular card), and 4GB isn't nearly enough to backup everything from the S3 to SD.
*edit* Well well..... 1.5.0 will not run on the CM rom on the S4!
You can back up to your internal memory. As long as you factory reset with custom recovery, you won't lose anything stored on it, except apps and settings
Great! One further question, is there any possibility that by switching ROMs, the game might think I'm on a different phone/new user (and if so, is there a way to fix this?)? Despite all the un/re-installs, I've never lost my progress most likely due to it being saved on their servers... but I'd hate to appear as a new user and lose month's worth of progress.
Yeah there's always that possibility. That's why you should always back up your apps with data so you can restore it in case
Thanks again. I wish I knew exactly what was being changed from version to version, that makes the game not work on an aftermarket rom. If it never worked from the beginning, that'd be one thing... but it's a yes/no/no/yes/no type of deal here. Shame I can't just take what works in the 1.4.0 version and compile it into the 1.5.0 ver... Or figure out what it's checking, and make it think it's a stock rom instead.
