I own an HTC INCREDIBLE and I've been told to "root" my phone to get rid of all the bloatware. What is rooting and how do I do it? A lot of my apps and all of my music and all photos are saved to my mem card. There are some HTC apps I would actually like to keep. Also, is there anyway I could get swipe on my phone?
Yep - you can root your phone to get rid of bloatware and allow you to do all sorts of other things, basically, rooting the phone allows you to be the administrator of your phone, whereas now you just have a user account on it ... As for how to root, that's been done a lot of different ways and is explained in a number of places - you should read several how-tos so you'll have an idea of what you're getting yourself into (and whether you want to bother)... The contents of your memory card should be safe, but you should back them up anyway, since memory cards do fail during normal use. Simply rooting won't automatically remove any of your apps, so your good there, but it will give you the ability to remove apps, or even break (or even "brick") your phone, so take it easy and don't take any steps 'till you understand what you're about to do.
Here are some resources you can check out :
Ok, actually I'm not allowed to be helpful by posting links since I'm a new member, but google these terms: root droid incredible Jonamerica - that'll get you started...
As for swype the legit way to get it is to sign up for their beta (it's available on their website which I can't link you to) and go from there.
Thanks so much. I'll check it out!
Just a few newbie tips for you.
I'm new to all of this also.....rooting and flashing.
1. Read a lot before you do anything. Its not hard but readup first!
2. Be patient......2 or 3 times while I have rooted or flashed I have thought that maybe my phone is dead. Sometimes there is no visible indication that the phone is actually doing what you want it to do. Let it sit there and do its thing. DO NOT PANIC and pull the battery!
3. Backup backup backup backup BACKUP!
Have fun.....I am

Thank you for this search link. Guide is very helpful, fills in alot of the blanks I've been having.
You're welcome.
There are numerous other guides and threads out there, so googling and reading is a good idea... I just researched it again since I rooted my wife's Inc. last night and since it has an SLCD screen I wanted to make sure that unrevoked had been updated to work with these screens - turns out it has and it worked fine. I actually had a scary moment when the phone wouldn't boot into recovery (five vibrations and a blank screen) but a google search and a battery pull saved me and so far so good since then - and I was able to uninstall verizon's backup assistant which was killing her battery every day.
Is that the only reason you rooted your wife's phone, was to remove some of the bloat? I might end up doing the same.

Yeah, that was the main reason - when she upgraded from her dumbphone, we used Backup Assistant to transfer her numbers over, but lately it's been hanging during sync and killing her battery (and/or it may be syncing over the poor 1x data connection rather than available wifi - not sure about that but it sounds like something Verizon would do (it would both be a bit more secure, and use more data they could bill us for)). Since Verizon in all their wisdom made it so you can't uninstall that app or disassociate it from your account, I figured the I'd use force and just root the phone - worked too, now her battery's lasting all day, no problem.
I also would recommend rooting to anyone concerned about certain apps wanting internet permissions - DroidWall is a great app allowing you to prevent apps from accessing the internet (or you can block just wifi or just 3g for a specific app, potentially allowing you to better manage your data usage).
make sure to read alot about what ur getting into.. And remember to always backup before you do anything (incase of errors/problems) you can always boot back to stock...happy rootin!
Check this out: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Barebones.
That guide is specific to Cyanogenmod, and it's a little outdated, but it's a good starting point to learn what applications are required for the phone to run, and which applications are simply "extra."
You know I know MS has done some DUMB things over the years but I think this has got to be the dumbest!
I don't put my credit card onlline esp for games and other trivalties. What I do is buy points I did it for my PS3, and I decided to do it for the MS store. Well low and behold the games can be bought, the music/video can be bought with points but NOT the apps!!
This is the dumbest thing. I don't want games on my phone, or music and videos with DRM lock on them. What I wasnt is a sirius Satalie radio app that apperently I can't buy without putting my credit card into the system.
So now because of MS's reasoning people who go to all that effort of building these apps and deserve to be paid for them can't be, and because I like so many others refuse to use our credit cards on the net and for a 1 dollar item the developers loose out. And not that i care i'm out 40 bucks (2800 points) I care that thats money MS gets and I will never spend, so they win!
Or you could do as I do, and when you want to buy an app, you complete the transaction on your phone, and have it charged to your phone bill. No hassle, no fuss, no credit card involved.
Unfortunately i doubt my system works that way, though it would be nice.
yea mine doesnt work either

are the price in USD or local currency(own country currency)
I am in the US, and all of the purchases I have made have been in USD. I don't know how it might work (or not work, as it seems) in other countries.
When I buy from MP I just pay using my Credit Card detail I have it stored with Live ID.. when I dont want them to charge my card I just buy it from my phone instead and my Atnt Bill gets credited at the end of the month for all purchases from my phone together...
I like phone billing better because its all together at month end.. I get time.. where as from card I keep seeing every 8-9 USD two three times.. so sometimes I could run into risk of overdrawing and stuff..
But than if I buy from phone.. I would have to re-install it again in case if I ever have hard reset my phone, (I have never done hard reset on my phone yet!! )... so I use MP to buy and install and dont have any problems..

Actually, even if you buy an app through Zune, you may still have to reinstall it from your phone after a hard reset (or replacement).
I recently added more memory to my Focus, which required a hard reset. After completing the reset, I connected to my PC so Zune could reinstall all of my apps, but only about a third of them auto-reinstalled. I don't know if the limit is time-based or number-based, but from what I could see, only the apps that I had purchased/installed within the last 6 weeks were present. The rest all had to be manually reinstalled, which was not fun at all.
This for me is probably the most frustrating part of the WP7 marketplace. We have no tool, either in Zune OR on the phone (it should be on BOTH) to allow use to see a complete history of what we have downloaded/purchased, with options to permanently remove things from the list that we downloaded to check out, but found to be worthless, and another option, for times such as following a hard reset, to select multiple apps to reinstall (or optionally "all"). Instead, I have to keep it all in a spreadsheet on my PC and manually install almost every single app. Lame.

I just save my ATnT bill which lists all my purchase for that month and I also get regular Emails in my LiveID for all the purchases I make at MarketPlace using my Card, so I dont have to maintain a spreadsheet right now..

Do through your zune settings on your computer, there is a spot to show you what you bought. thought not sure about that if you buy it on your phone.

I'm not sure if that even shows a complete history of Zune-purchased apps. And, even for the apps it does list, it doesn't provide any tools to reinstall. In fact, Zune doesn't allow any manual reinstall, period. It HAS TO be done on the phone.
[Edit]
I hadn't tried to use that tool in a while, because the last time I did use it, it didn't list everything. It looks like it does now list everything (even apps purchased on the phone), but still lacks the ability to reinstall apps from there. And there is still the glaring lack of a similar tool on the phone itself.
Actually it's weird but believe me apps keep reinstalling for a few days on Zune after a hard reset. It doesn't make any sense but I experienced it with my phone.
That said, a way to backup would be ideal, specially when it comes to game saves.

also its cheaper to just buy it via ATT, saves me a few cents of sales tax.
Just setup a credit card specifically for online purchases. You are protected. Just make sure you check your statement each month to make sure there were no fraudulent charges.

I dont know why people have to maintain a list when they get all the info in their billing.. users can just save their emails/atnt bills..

the Zune created backups save apps and game saves. The backup is surprisingly thorough. There is a program on XDA here now that will trick Zune into creating a backup at any time.

That's true, but there is no selective restore feature. It's either all or nothing. Plus, if you have a Focus, and add more memory, the backup will not be recognized as valid for your phone any more.

You can't backup specific data with that tool. What it does - basically spoken - is force Zune into the update mode, so it runs a backup of your device. After the backup is finished, the update process is aborted. When you now want to restore the backup, you just do a simple rollback from within Zune.
I need to try this, cheers. Xbox Live is getting cloud saving, would be great if WP7 games were included in that.

Since i done a bit of research and dug around a bit on xda i finally came up with a thread that shows me how to get it working. And it actually does and i for one find it amazing.
What you get is with Google Music you get to have a 20,000 song space over the air firstly. That is awesome. You can play music offline or while you out and about and that frees space on your phone. More details regarding Google music you can get it here
Now on with the tutorial:
1) First download hotspot shield from here
2) Once you downloaded then install it on your pc. Once you install then start it up. I suggest to use either Firefox or Google Chrome.
3) What hotspot shield does it basically does is to use your browser as a VPN. That gives the impression that you are in America for example and you can download google music. Think of it as market enabler that you use on your phone for apps that are only available in the US or other countries.
4) Once hotspot shield is installed run this and the "shield" will go from red to green. This means it's running.
5) Then go to play.google.com and then to shop->shop music and register or login with your gmail address.
6) Download and install google music manager and exit hotspot shield.
7) Once done enjoy your music on any phone. For android just download the apk given in the OP.
So there you go...a very nearly full functional use of google music....let me know what you think and if it's helped you out. Feel free to share the guide if you like. Just make sure you ask me first and give link of my thread to yours. Once you finished all the setup and everything else with your account, no need no longer need to use hotspot so you can uninstall it from your pc
Thanks to truthlesshero for his guide that helped me get me started.
Google Music Manager download from here for MAC
For Windows it is here
And if this guide has helped you out do not forget to hit that thanks button
Doesn't work.. asks me to "Add a new payment method", if I click Cancel or the X in the top right, it doesn't proceed and doesn't setup my Music Library and cannot upload music, and it doesn't actually get the Free song I chose.
I think they have worked out this method and are now asking for a USA credit card to confirm you are a USA citizen, even tho they do not charge your card.
Bummer..
I just used a free VNC, like TunnelBear, and created my account through web browser.
I have an account with http://uktvproxy.co.uk/ for watching SKY UK as I live abroad now. I signed upto to Google music a few months ago, put all my collection online and the best thing is that it works just fine on my mobile without having to be logged into a proxy.
It's a good service, but for me, on my other phones there has been about a 3-5 second delay in between changing songs - that feels like an eternity to me. Not sure how to improve the speed.
If it ever gets like spotify, where the music starts/changes almost instantly, then I'd use it more often.
I have no issues when using on my pc though.

that requires you to download the tor browser and although it sounds easier i can sure it does not.
look all you do is download hotspot shield. then install and start it up. get firefox up and running and then just go into google music and follow the steps...piece of cake..once you setup your account with google music and set up everything on pc which it takes five minutes, then all you got to do is just start listening to music. and every time you go on google music on your pc just make sure you sign in with your email account that you set up the google music with..and then you can uninstall hotspot shield
not working for me either. I'm using Tor browser, if i browse to whatismycountry.com it tells me i'm in the USA, so the proxy is working. But when i go to music.google.com and log in i get the following message:
We're sorry. The Google Play music player is currently only available in the United States.
when I go to play.google.com i do get the option to enter the music store, but then when i try to add a free song it tells me to add a new payment method...
Then when i fill out all of the fields (apparantly i live in the US, in Somecity, Alabama) it tells me my phone number is invalid.
Adding a random american phone number (i used games workshop's customer service phone number) works, and I can now "purchase" free songs.
Next issue, when i try to buy a free song i get the message "Oops, we could not determine if this item is compatible with your device. Please try again later."
No idea how to fix that, so I'm stuck for now. music.google.com still says unsupported, and no songs can be added.

For android just google google music.apk and install and for all other phone/tablet(including wp7 and iPhone/iPad) just go to music.google.com
Hope it helps someone now

now i'm going to download that apk and install it on my phone.

Although i haven't tried it with hotspot shiled. At work we are using USA proxy so i just downloaded and registered at work, got the APK installed also and uploaded 8000+ songs when i went home (it took a looong time ) now i can listen all my songs from work, home, HOX, anywhere with internet access...
I tried the engadget method, didn't work. Would just hang at the final stage of registration.
Had no probs using a program called Hide My IP. It works with the free 14 day trial. Just set IP to a US one and register for google music.

I think it's been mentioned that you can update the apk in the OP. I'm currently using v4.1.513, and don't even know if that's the latest.

time to free up the music from my machines now and sync them though the cloud!!.

My Note arrived. It's great but weird having used iPhones for the last 6 years. I feel somewhat uncomfortable using it but that's because I'm still finding my way around.
Anyway I have a question. I don't get how to use Samsung cloud. I don't get how to back up my photos. It's saying I've used 150MB of cloud storage but I have around 1.5GB of photos. I've also moved all my photos from SD card to internal pictures folder. Any help?
Thanks
Using IOS for six years and then moving to Android is such a big jump most people wouldnt dare, so, seriously, hats off to you.
Anyway, since you are new to Android, I would suggest to just use the Google photos App and backup everything (photos) to your google account and you would get much more freedom.

Since I use Windows, I never needed an application to transfer music or files from my laptop and this is the case with most if not all Android phones. I would suggest to download Kies (which is like Itunes of Samsung phones), just google Kies for Mac and it will be your first hit.
I am suggesting Kies for another motive, which is you might have a driver problem that does not work well when you connect the phone to your laptop. So when you install the software it will probably fix that and you would not need the software ever again *fingers crossed*. Or you can use Kies anyway, you might like it.

I too switched from iOS to android which meant I needed to transfer my iTunes library to my note 7. I used something called isyncr which is free on the desktop available for windows and Mac but it costs £7.99 in the Google play store (unless you want the extremely limited free version). Anyway, I bought it and it was super easy to setup, you select specific playlists, srtistd, albums whatever you want. Then it took about like 10-15 minutes and I transferred nearly 2000 songs onto my SD card. It was really handy.
I bought this Mi Pad 5 (EU version) in hopes to have multiple users to switch between.
There is an app, SwitchMe, which (I think) would solve my problems, but I just bought the damn thing and have no need to loose warranty just to unlock the bootloader and root it in order to use the beforementioned app.
The included solution from MIUI, second room, doesn't allow the second user, to connect to google. Nor easy way to switch between users (actually, easy way to switch to first user, but not back to second user, AND only while using the tablet and not from lock-screen).
The last thing I found on the internet was, to enable multiple users via developer options.
The way to enable multiple user is to turn off MIUI optimization. But that is not an option on my tablet. As in, there is no slider to swipe to off.
Have I missed anything? Are there any way to have multiple users on a freaking tablet in the 21st freaking century?
Save me! you wonderful super nerds!

Hello, Just got the tablet, it was really quick. Ordered when it went for sale in Italy on Thursday and today Friday morning already received it. Maybe I'm one of the first to receive the tablet with Global ROM, but I'm going to ask anyway: I...

I've had the same frustrations and can't for the life of me understand why Xiaomi would feel the compulsion to strip away Android's core multi-user stuff just to introduce a half-baked porrly thought out substitute. What if we're more than 2 in our household anyways ?
If the above suggestion kind of works for some google accounts, it won't for accounts supervised with family link. So if you wanted to share the tablet with a kid, registered as such, you're out of luck. I'm in the process of trying a custom ROM to get rid of MIUI, because I already can't stand the thing. And that makes me sad, because I thought such OEM nonsense had been left behind YEARS ago, and I can now see I was deeply mistaken :-(
So I have the pro version and I can connect to google just fine.
But when I go try it on the regular pad 5 yeah it can't connect both on second space and multiple users. Is it a rom issue maybe? that might get fixed?
Anyway.. to access multiple users try this:
1.Download Activity launcher from the play store.
2. Open the app and search for "multiple users".
Click on it and add users from there.
Extra step: press & hold on "multiple users" to create a shortcut to this menu to your home screen.
Make sure to enable Home screen shortcuts permission for the app first.
It's still inconvenient to use. Only way to access other profiles is from that settings menu.
And it won't connect to google, just wait and hit skip.

The included solution from MIUI, second room, doesn't allow the second user, to connect to google. Nor easy way to switch between users (actually, easy way to switch to first user, but not back to second user, AND only while using the tablet and not from lock-screen).

You can switch between the users using different passwords from the lockscreen. I'm using a different pattern for the second space.
You can switch to first and back to second user while using the tablet just you have to enable it from the settings. " add shortcut to home screen"
Also check the solutions on the mentioned thread above. I can see on post #24 someone got it connected to google on second space.
@Half Alive , you rock ! While I was waiting for Xiaomi to allow me to unlock the bootloader on my Pad 5, I tried your suggestion with Activity Launcher and, lo and behold, it worked ! I was able to add my son's Google account and family link is now doing its thing. Now, since the multiuser features are still there, why did Xiaomi jumped through hoops to hide them ? That still feels quite a bit dumb to me, but hey, as long as I can use them, I guess it'll do.
Thanks again !
I can confirm that the fix mentioned on the other thread is working to fix the login error on the second space Account. To solve the problem do the following:
* Go to Apps, show all
* Google Play Store -> uninstall updates
* Google Play Services -> uninstall updates (after this the app list disappear)
* You can go to the Play store and login
* Repeat for the other space if necessary
Thanks for the help

I posted my thread late December and unfortunately forgot all about it. Though I did have my dad and his wife staying over new year, so I was preoccupied.
Thank you for your replies and I will test the posted solution come dawn, and report back after that.
Thank you all for your contribution!
I am now a happy owner of a tablet with multiple users via second space. Not as polished as I would like it. But it works and I'm happy.
Thank you

Hi, can I have details on how you managed to get family link to work?
I tried to install my child's profile first but it wouldn't let me, kept hanging on family link manager. I also removed all accounts and added mine first and tried to set up multiple users but I couldn't set up the account. It would just loop on trying to contact Google. I also tried to uninstall updates and clear data on Google play and services without success.
Well, I ended up installing a phh GSI on it, because switching profiles was way too bothersome for everyday use in the end. So I can only try to remember, but I don't think I did anything other than what you said coupled with the trick mentionned by @Half Alive . I'm sorry I can't remember doing anything else :-/

Not a prob. Thanks anyway. I'll keep hacking away at it. Hopefully the MIUI 13 update sorts it. Otherwise I'll have to try an alternate rom too. Thanks.

Updated today to MIUI 13 Global version and.... not working. Again boot loop while configuring second space as a child's account
For anyone interested in setting up a managed child's account, I seemed to have figured it out. Take note, this is only for a single child's account on the Tab 5. Not for a tab being shared by two users.
When I first got the Tab, I set it up with a child's account and it was successful but I couldn't manage the account from family link and so tried to remove the accound and re add it but despite all the tricks above, it didn't work.
But this did work:
Totally factory reset the device and on the first boot set up the tab with the child's account. On this attempt everything went totally smooth (with no additional tricks). The account works fine and is totally managed by Family Link. Have been using it for almost a week smoothly.

With this particular option, one single child account, does it allow to install miui system updates? Tried with miui 12 with no luck

Yee, I updated to miui 13 a couple of weeks ago. No problem. But I did install family link on my phone to monitor the device. No problem on the update. All has been working smoothly.
