Adaptive Battery Issue - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I downloaded the Adroid P Beta and everything works GREAT except the "Adaptive Battery " setting. I'll toggle it on but it seems to turn itself off just as quickly. It won't stay on for any length of time at all. Just curios to see if anyone else here is having this issue. Thanks in advance.

Yes. Whenever I check, the toggle is grey and OFF. It doesn't seem to stay ON for more than an hour on my phone, which is weird because it did restrict one of my apps about a week ago.

So strange that now that I've seen this thread, I've noticed mine has been turned off and not staying on. All my previous screenshots I've taken it's stayed on since day one with DP2.

Strange for me it is always ON. Relatively new to updating to P beta though.
Reasons can be speculated, please provide feedback to google on the same.
My speculated reasons:
If battery is low, it could stop adaptive battery function to avoid extra consumption of battery in learning usage pattern.
If adaptive battery has sufficient time executed and learnt usage pattern it could be kept off and android system can just use already learnt usage pattern for optimizing battery. Unless new app install or some change I can keep it turned off.
Obviously some bug or limit kept by Google to ensure it runs for specific time period as learning usage pattern does consume battery.

I haven't noticed any issue with the Adaptive Battery on my phone, just checked and it's still turned on.

mine was on last time I checked (not sure when that was), looked now, it was off, switched it back on, and is staying on.

just a follow up from earlier, it was again turned off when I checked it just now.
turned it back on, but apparently that wont last.
not sure whats up with it.

Mine is ON, never seen it greyed out. I did do a fresh IMAGE install of P.
CC

Same for me, it gets disabled randomly. I guess it will be fixed in the DP3 that will be released next week

Google must be doing something remotely and only recently as this was definitely not happening a day or two ago. And it doesn't seem to automatically turn back on either.

ya, it definitely keeps turning itself off, mine did a few times during the day today

During my experience with Android P and adaptive battery, I did notice in the beginning I was not getting notifications from hangouts until I actually opened the app, this happened for a couple of days and then stopped. My assumption is that adaptive battery was not allowing hangouts to run as it hadn't learned that its an app I use all the time. I can see this as being a problem for users, maybe google disabled it temporarily until they work it out.

started happening to me out of nowhere too.
I been running the P beta since day 1 and ive checked the battery many times and noticed it was turned on.. then last week i checked again and noticed it was off, thought i did it by accident and turned it back on, but it keeps turning itself off since then. very weird

Just checked and adaptive battery ? is still enabled.

Post your Bug report here [Developer Preview Android P] Adaptive Battery

Same here chaps... Swiched itself off this morning

So after I installed DP3 it was set to on already. Let's see how long it'll last.

Lost 50% Battery Overnight

I've had the phone for near a week now and this is the first time doze has failed me. Left it alone at 10pm with about 50% left and looks like it went to zero in about four hours. (screenshot) I've tested other nights and it worked as expected -- wifi and cell coming on and off periodically. When checking usage, I was disturbed to find Facebook took up 25% of my battery. Is there some way Facebook is overriding doze?

Wow. Looks like it was constantly awake during that time. You didn't happen to turn on photo syncing with Facebook?

Facebook is one of the worst when it comes to battery drains, I stopped using it and i just use a browser to stay logged in. Snapchat is also pretty bad, I think it was top 3 in my list while I slept earlier. First time happening, i turned off location on snapchat, ill see if that helps

Same here. Facebook did this to me back when I had an HTC Hero, killed my battery in 8 hours no problem. The moment they changed the application to a "service" and had those wake-lock bugs I ditched it, never looked back.
No application should install itself as an always-on service unless its there for push messages. I decided that having my phone last all day was more important than getting facebook messages immediately.

I stopped using Snapchat a while ago for that reason. Facebook, however, never really gave me a problem on my N6. It usually hovered around 6-7% use. No app is worth that much drain, let alone Facebook. If this is a normal occurrence, I'll probably just uninstall it.

Hopefully this was a one time occurrence since it worked fine on my N6. I've got no problem getting rid of it though, because like you said, I'd rather have my phone last all day (or night in this case).
Second Night Update
While I agree the Facebook app is bad, it looks like it was not the culprit. Uninstalled, doze again failed to kick in overnight and drained 18% over about seven hours. Not as bad as the 50% the first time, but still no bueno. It looks like Android OS kept it awake for seven hours. I know doze is pretty new, but there are some smart people here; anyone got any ideas/theories as to what's going on and remedy? Screenshots

Good to know I'm not alone! Even after uninstalling Facebook I've got the same problem with Android OS keeping it on. I'm considering clearing the cache and see if that changes anything.
Wow you have a perfectly diagonal line. Try a battery monitoring app. Might have more useful information as to what is draining overnight.

I did a factory reset and installed ~10 of my most used apps instead of restoring all apps and it's been sleeping fine now, no wakelocks
I also turned off WiFi and Bluetooth scanning, location services are on battery saving, and Google location reporting is off
I am willing to bet there are going to be some hiccups with marshmallow or even some newer hardware features of the phone and some apps until everything gets up to speed.
Just wondering, what build are you guys on? MDA89E or MDB08I?? I'm on MDA89E
I got 08I immediately after turning it on, Ive always lost like 1-2% overnight.
Maybe that is what the last-minute update was for, fixing that bug that you (unfortunately) found.

Razer phone not Deep sleeping according to AccuBattery discharge tests!

Razer phone not Deep sleeping according to AccuBattery discharge tests!
I have crap battery life when the phone is not in use. Loosing about 7% an hour with screen off and sleeping.
Wifi on, mobile data off, bluetooth off and nfc. So whats causing the drain with battery?
:edit (Plus phone set to 60fps and battery saving with all apps. )
I see no signs of this device actually deep sleeping. I have no apps that cause this either so whats the deal?
Do any other users notice this issue?
Also Whats with the rapid charge? The phone charges to about 25% rapid charge then drops to a low charge that drops slowly until 100% is reached. This takes fully charging to around 1 hour 20 minutes, That is not rapid charging! You can also see this yourself with accubattery charge monitoring. Have others noticed these issues?
I've just noticed the same issue today. Yesterday when I went to sleep, I left my phone around 65% and when I woke up it had 30%.
Could that be fixed when they release Oreo update? I'm kinda worried about it :/

But I keep thinking that it's draining more battery than it should when the screen off.

OK I found the issue that cause the Razer not deep sleeping. The Theme store that is pre-installed to the phone was keeping the phone from deep sleeping. Disable the Razer Theme app from app settings. You can re-enable it afterwards and the phone will deep sleep fine after. This caused me several issues regarding battery life.
I also checked my sons Razer and even though his was deep sleeping Disabling and re enabling the Razer Theme app made the phone deep sleep better with less wake-ups,
I would suggest everyone either disables the Razer theme store app or at least disables and re-enable the app to get better deep sleep.
I was loosing 7% an hour because of this app issue. Try it you will see a great improvement in screen off time.
Disable the Razer theme store completely if you get poor battery drain with screen off. After further testing The Theme store app is causing the issue and after re-enabling it the drain came back about 3 hours later. I suggest to keep the Theme store disabled until you need it. This has sorted my never sleeping issue and stopped the 7% per hour battery drain in standby.

Great that's confirmed the issue is the Theme store app causing the phone not to deep sleep. Glad it worked for you. :0-)
Strangely enough my Accubattery says my phone is in deep sleep 90%+ of screen off-time yet I'm also getting the same 7-10%/h drain with the screen off. Will be disabling theme store just in case that really is the problem
Yes there is a problem I spoke to razer support. I told them of the issue and that it was razer theme store causing the phone not to sleep. The support guy had me talk to the engineering team who were to say the least extremely pleased that I found what had been causing the issue. According to the engineering team they have been looking for the cause of this issue for last couple of months. They swore that they would fix the no deep sleep issue in the app in the next update. Even said they would send me a spare charger as a thank you for finding the problem. They also said that orio would release by the end of march but no sign of that yet. It's seems a strange problem that is not effecting all razer phones.
Would be nice to know who has factory reset after doing the last update and who hasn't.
I have not factory reset but my phone was already updated straight out of the box. Have other updated and factory reset?

I have factory reset and found out my personal problem was WiFi. After changing from 5GHz to 2.4Ghz my drain is back to around 0.8 an hour. Nearly 0 if I turn WiFi off completely but im still doing testing. It's strange though as all my tests have been next to the router so I shouldnt be getting excessive drain from poor signal
Im unsure if this is releated and put the app on my phone to just check as im a man who likes stats. I have noticed that when relaxing with the phone on charge the screen will randomly light up with no notification to trigger this happening.
My Phones just laying there on charge and the screen will light up still locked with no notifications and a few seconds later it will turn off the screen again its bugging me as im not seeing a reason to why this is happening.

I believe that i factory wiped mine using the software options within the OS as part of an issue im having wth the netflix app crashing i cant say that ive seen a battery dip as other have done above but charging my phone over night to 100% i only see it dip when im watching youtube or actually using the phone. When the screens off im not seeing huge % of battery drop. i leave WIFI on and switch between 5ghz and 2.4ghz when its at home and at work i manually turn it off as i dont want my phone connected to works wifi.
I also leave bluetooth enable and never turn this off howver i do turn the Razer BT headphones off when not in use to save battery.
Will keep you updated
Oddly enough i just got a new Razer Theme Store update will check the patch notes for deep sleep fix.

I used to see that behaviour on my Note 5. I noticed that the screen light up showing a notification from Google Playstore while an app was being updated, and then it faded away as soon as it finished. Sometimes this happened so fast that I could only see the notification already fading away.

Good call on that as it wasnt something I thought to check as its so quick!
For now I have gone into Playstore > Settings > Notification Settings >
Updates (Left on) as i should get the this app has an update message stay in the noticfication drop down.
Auto-Updates (Turned Off) hopefully it wont tell bother me and leave the phone screen off and this should fix my issue

Also, I've noticed that my battery is draining like 15-20% during the night (about 6 hours). Yesterday I tried turning off WiFi and Mobile Data before going to sleep, and when I woke up today, I noticed it drained only 1% during those 6 hours!
Is normal that Wifi/Mob8ke Data drain so much battery while inactive?

Notification Issue

Since I've gotten the pie update I have an issue with the notifications. I often don't receive them at all or just when I unlock the phone. I've already checked background activity and turned all battery saving options off. It does not happen Everytime but often and is very annoying. Anyone else have the same problem or a solution?

Excessive idle drain

So for the past 2 days my idle drain has been well over 2% with it currently sitting at about 4%. This is confirmed using ex manager. Previously my idle drain was less than 1%. Usually hovering at about 0.8%.
I find this very curious. Upon inspecting what's using battery I see nothing out of the ordinary. I cannot use bbs as I am not unlocked or rooted. My usage had been consistent, I have not installed any new apps. I don't get it.
Anyone experiencing anything similar? I guess if not and it's not some new temporary google play services thing my next step would be a factory reset.
Thane a million for your input.

I would start by rebooting into safe mode to see if this is reproducible. If not, then its a user app causing it. Did you add or update any lately? What build are you on and how did you get to it? As cool as I think the OTA process is I never fully trust it and always end up going back and "clean flashing" the OTA later.
Now, to be fair, this is the longest Ive ever been on stock in my life so ymmv.

I will give that a go. Thanks got the advise.
I have taken app updates as they become available. Not sure. Probably 15-20 apps have updated in the heat few days.
I am in the latest ota. I was on beta and updated to stable when it became available and then another update within the last week or so. Never saw a changeling for that one since it mirrored the Android 10 stable update.
I feel you on not running stock. This is the first device I have not felt the need to screw with. Usually that's step one. Unlock and root access. Saw you are working on a rom. I may give that a go when you get it up and running. I've run your stuff before. Solid.

Yea more times than not it's an app causing an issue.
Do you have always on display enabled? I found leaving that enabled definitely brings my idle way higher than I'd like it to go. With it off my idle is about 0.30%/hr on it can get up to like 5%/hr.

Hi,
which apps do you use to check the drain in percentage?
I found that 4G standby (even without data switched off) started to drain faster when I travel. For example 6-7% during my 45 mins commute to work.
Strange is that battery usage app shown .. nothing that ate 7%, actually showing ... nothing.
No idea if this ia due to latest android but for sure I get less screen time 10 out of 11 hours.
Is it needful to download the image and flash or factory reset will do similar job?

I just used the factory reset option and it fixed my issue. Make sure you backup all your data. After that Google has made resetting the device extremely easy. Back in the day I had to jump thorough a ton more hoops when setting up. Now data is backed up as are password and login credentials. You'll be back up and running within 20 minutes. Good luck.

Terrible battery life since Android 10

Since the latest update of Android 10, my phone will not even last me a day. I've asked Google Assitant if my battery is bad and it told me it's fine. But I can do 30 min of light new reading and it's dropped by 20%, previously I could easily get an hour of Reddit and reading and it would drop to 90-91%.
I've tried many things, like clearing cache of Google App and Google Play Service but it still drains. I have no apps running the background that I see are taking a lot of resources.
Try a custom kernel; there are a number of good ones out there. I use caesium.
I'm using latest: 10 factory image, EX kernel, twrp, and magisk.
Today I was at 2hr 55 min with 47% remaining, and my overnight drain is about 6%, which are both about the same as what I was getting on 9x.
IIRC "wi-fi and BT scanning" (location) were turned ON by default when I switched to 10, so I turned them off. Not sure how much, if any, additional drain that might cause.
Yes...this ^^^; I am experiencing the same as well...
I noticed I used to have such excellent battery life on my 2XL, but no longer... I used to use it pretty hard (SOT plus apps like GPS or streaming music/video), and still have a good percentage leftover at the end of the day (15-20%)....
I'm unsure what, if anything specific, might be causing such the drain, but I "chalked" it up to the new OS version....maybe it's inadvertently attempting to sense off-screen gestures for all i know (which would be an understandable loop with that being a Pixel 4 particular and makes sense of the drain)...
Just some basic info on my device: October patch, Magisk v20, custom kernel: Caesium (successor of the legend Flash kernel), AOD is enabled, manual brightness but usually at 80%-ish, “Saturated” color scheme, Dark theme enabled (in both Display settings and in Developers settings), “Optimizing battery use” is enabled for most apps….
