I am having some issues with rooting the tablet. it is not showing up in Odin when in Download mode. I want to root and install TWRP.
I am not an odin expert, but I never had problems establishing a connection between odin and the tablet. What I always do is keep the USB cable disconnected while I launch odin. Then drop the tablet into the download mode, and only after that plug the USB cable. This always worked for me. Make sure you plug the USB cable directly into your Laptop/Desktop instead of an external hub if you have one, I had weird issues with those sometimes. Click on your device here and follow the instructions:

When I plug my handset to ANY computer (with, without kies or drivers, it doesn't matter) the phone charges, but, nothing appears on the computer (no unknown device or recognizing the two drives of the phone, but not mounting them (as it did before)) on the phone.
The "USB" icon doesn't prompt and if I go to settings/wireless and network/ USB utilities, when I touch the USB mass storage button, it prompts me to connect cable, which is already connected.
-USB debug isn't activated (I've tried both)
When my phone is powered off and I start to charge it, the charging screen doesn't prompts, It just start booting.
I've tried different USB Cables.
The Phone is Official Stock Never Rooted (I discovered this trying to root it today)
Am I SOL if I want to root it without a working USB Data port?
Any ideas?
i would say make sure there's no dust/ buildup in the port. I had connection issues once to find a pocket lint cramed in there. next do all the other stuff. uninstall/reinstall drivers, diff usb port, diff pc, reboot. My symptoms were similar to yours but i was able to reboot into recovery/bootloader and use adb/fastboot no prob, so not sure. and I was already rooted/twrp recovery. might be worth it to try fastboot in bootloader just to be sure and get a recovery on it asap. If that works you should be able to recover stock or flash whatever, then test usb again in diff pc with fresh kies install. good luck.
Sounds like bad/improper USB cables to me, not all USB cables support data and charging, make sure you're using an official Samsung USB cable.
If you have a friend with a Samsung smart phone ask to try their cable.
I have a Galaxy Note 8 that I would like to root.
I have downloaded and installed the latest Samsung drivers on my PC, and can connect the tablet via USB to my computer with no problem. I can browse the tablet via the computer etc. (Windows 7)
Problem: I fire up Odin mode on my tablet and put it into download mode. (I have USB debugging enabled.)
I fire up Odin 3.07 on my PC and plug in the USB cable.
I have no connection between the tablet and the PC under any conditions when the tablet is in Odin download mode.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Tried Starting Odin as Administrator?
You may need to install the samsung usb drivers. There is a difference between connecting your tablet to your computer and windows reading it as an MTP device, and connecting it in download mode which the computer sees differently and will need drivers for it. You can find them on the Samsung support site in the download section.
I have had issues connecting the Note 4 to my PCs. I have tried multiple cables and computers. A usb error appears "Usb Device not recognized" "The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and WIndows does not recognize it." All PC's are running windows 8. I have tried connecting it via fastboot to flash to stock as well as through ADB and I cannot get anything to read the device.
Are you using the oem cable? Sometimes cheap generic cables give errors. Enable usb debugging and see if that helps. Good luck.

Thanks but I've tried multiple. OEM and aftermakert cables. I found that when I put it in the charger it doesn't detect it as AC. I believe for some reason when the phone is connected to the PC it doesn't switch to MTP, which could cause the issue. I have wiped the phone, tried different roms, and installing plasma kernel. I am at my wits end. I have tried finding sprint's seceret number to dial, supposedly there's a menu to force MTP but I can't find it anywhere.
OK. So I couldn't connect via cable I tried flashing the stock image though mobile odin and now I lost recovery and the phone bootloops. Does anyone know a way to boot into recovery from the external SD card?
I would just flash the OF5 tar and start from scratch. http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...om-sm-n910p-stock-of5-odin-flashable-t3158114
Sounds like it's your computer.
Edit: Any other phone's Samsung or not able to connect? Does your phone charge with any or all of your cables? Hopefully the stock cable.
You need to go to Device Manager and Uninstall/reinstall the drivers pertaining to USB
Uninstall the samsung drivers
After that, unplug your powercord from the laptop
connect the phone to your usb port first and then replug your powercord and turn on your laptop
let the usb and samsung drivers reinstall(auto or manual)(if it detects it normally))

I wish I could, the issue is that since I get this USB error, I can't get ODIN to detect my phone.

I was able to get my Note 3 to connect with no problem, I was even able to get ODIN to detect it in Fastboot. I have one more cable I am going to try tonight, I have my girlfriend bringing it with her. I may have switched an S4 cable with the Note 4 cable. I hope this is the case.

I was using my desktop, and I tried this on my laptop. Didn't work. Thanks though! I am wondering if this possibly could be a Windows 8.1 issue...
Anyways, 5.50 to anyone who gets this working.
I accidentally switched cables with my son's s4 and nothing would work. Figured it out and then I could connect to my computer. Could be the same thing lol.

I wish that was the case. I am wondering if it's a windows 8 issue now.
I'm on 8.1 pro, and my devices detects fine under cm12.1.
Have you tried going into Settings > Storage. select the 3 dot menu on the top right and force MTP or PTP detection while device is connected to PC / Laptop?
hello,
my note 2 doesn't turn on. it still remains in the display with samsung logo. i can't enter in recovery, but only in download mode. i tried to reflash the twrp with odin, but odin doesn't recognize the smartphone.
how can i solve?
thank you
Did Odin recognise the phone before?
Unfortunately I've been there, Odin won't recognise the note 2 nether will the PC, there is a problem in the USB socket that comes with the phone that makes the phone unable to be recognized by the PC unless you use the Cable that came with the phone and not always, so you have two options now:
1-keep trying any cable you find, even if it was a camera cable or other devices, or try to find the original note 2 cable.
2-or change the USB socket in your phone with a normal one and you will be able to make it recognized by the PC.
I always hated that issue ?
If you could solve it in another way, then tell me..
Regards Migo
@audit13 no @MigO thanks, i will try with another cable, but i don't have original cable
Also try all usb 2.0 ports and make sure drivers are installed properly.
I have the d2spr with OctOS 7.1.1 installed (from April 2017 I think). This rom has been awesome and I have been able to connect via USB and transfer files in the past but now I cannot. When I plug in USB I always get a charging indication on the phone but no evidence of a data connection either at the phone or the PC. I have the USB mode set to MTP but when I plug in the phone it acts as though I have Charging Only selected. Windows device manager shows no activity. There are no UNKOWN devices listed and the PC shows no sign of hardrive or processor activity when I connect the phone. I have tested with 5 different USB cables and three different PC's. They all behave identically. Additionally I have plugged the phone in while in DOWNLOAD MODE and still the behavior is identical. I have fresh samsung phone drivers installed. One of these PC's have seen this phone before the other two have not. I'm beginning to think my micro usb port on the phone has taken a biff but it has always and still does charged perfectly.
I could try a factory reset but that doesn't seem to jive with getting nothing in DOWNLOAD MODE. I haven't loaded ODIN to see if it sees the phone but even without odin loaded it should still load a bunch of devices in device manager.
EDIT: I have also booted into recovery and it also behaves identically when plugged into the PC - no response but it charges
Any ideas? I have searched the forums but no one I could find has this exact issue of absolutely no response from the PC.
Thanks in advance!
I have had this for quite awhile. USB port is done. It's also a very difficult repair. Now I use flashfire instead of Odin because of this. But flashfire doesn't do bootloader and modems are iffy. So only flashfire a version you are already on (nd8, ndc, etc.)
UPDATE: I was able to adjust the usb cable to just the right position for Odin to see it and was able to flash via Odin. The weird thing is no amount of wiggle gets windows to recognized it. Thanks for your response.
