No sound and mic not working when calling - Xiaomi Mi 5s Questions & Answers

Hello!
My phone has always been working fine so far.
Two days ago suddenly I couldn't make phone calls anymore. To me more precise there was no sound on my side and the other person could not hear me, just silence.
I did a reboot and it worked again.
Yesterday the problem came up again. Did a reboot, but a did not help. Today I did a more detailed investigation and it turns out:
- when doing a normal call I cannot hear a thing, not even the ringing sound. the other person may hear a crackling sound
- when I plug in a headphone-microphone (like the stock ones delivered with new phones) the call works normal (not the best sound but probably due to the cheap headphones)
- when I am on speaker the call works fine too (form the speakers at the bottom)
Another fun thing:
- the speaker does NOT work when playing music oder videos (tested with spotify and youtube). Yet the speaker works during calls
Conclusion:
- Normal front speaker does not give a sound
- Microphone works only when using speaker mode on calls
- Bottom speaker working when calling in speaker mode but not with music/video
My current setup:
Latest Firmwaer: fw_capricorn_miui_MI5S_V9.5.2.0.NAGCNFA_60af75c30b_7.0.zip
Latest Lineage OS nightly: lineage-15.1-20180514-nightly-capricorn-signed.zip
I did full wipes, firmware update, flash older ROMs...
Did anyone experience something like this before? Any ideas what to do?

Hi,
I'm in the same situation, with the same diagnosis.
Problem appear after updating to the lineageos rom of early May.

I did sold mi5s and bought mi5 (cheaper to service once screen is broken).
I think you must dismantle and turn clockwise speaker, so pins get contact. As far as I remember is was the problem

I checked pins and it's ok...

Die anyone found a solution? Is it a hardware or a software problem?

I had the same problem. In my case the solution was to clean the headphone port. Lint/Mud had accumalted there.

Did you recently use headphones or Bluetooth audio? Although a factory reset should have taken care of that.

ive used the headphones that came with them for a bit yesterday. and ive used it with my bluetooth for some time. but when i did take it off it was still working last night .
and i just did my 2nd factory reset but this time i didnt enter any of my google info to see if it happened to be one of the apps or settings i had backed up. still no voice or media. just the little notifications and things
edit: it did have a single random reboot yesterday during a phone call.
edit#2: the voice calls seem to work once i put it on speaker, but the phone will take it off speaker abt 2 seconds after its turned on
Not in a 2G area are you?
I've had the same issue. I have my sound turned all the way up but no media is being heard through the speakers/headphones/bluetooth speakers, no matter what I change. The sound does still play for notifications though. Any suggestions, or was op able to fix the issue?
---------- Post added at 03:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:00 PM ----------
To update my original post, the audio will play through my headphones if I plug them in to the audio jack, but not through the phone speakers or through my bluetooth headphones.
I have this same problem, confirmed defective when I took it into the store, they are exchanging it tomorrow.
Wow ok. I didn't want to have to return, was hoping it was a software thing with an easy fix. I think I will also be exchanging this for a new unit as well though. I don't want to take the risk on such an expensive device. It should work perfectly without any hiccups.
If anyone else has any experiences with this please let us know.
Thanks!
I ended up returning and exchanging with a new phone. No issues with the new one
i am having the same issue. no speaker sounds. headphones work just fine. phone call speaker works just fine. BT steaming works just fine.
its just the speaker that doesnt work...if i revert back to stock...will that work?
thanks!

No Sound During Call

Hello. I seem to have a problem whenever I call when I have a headset on. Whenever I answer a call, I can not hear anything but the other person can hear me. However, when I answer without my headset, I can hear them fine. I'm currently running the latest CM10.1 (Jan. 19) with it's default kernel. I've already tried different basebands.
Am I the only one who has this problem?
I think call volume is a bug in cm 10.1

I don't think it's a call volume bug though. I can hear the other person fine if I don't answer the call with my headset in. If I answer the call with my headset in, I can't hear them at all but they can hear me.
Hm i'm not too sure i would check the cm 10 bug thread. Maybe someone can give you more info or help you. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2085171
Try different headset. If that doesn't work you most likely have hardware issue rather than software.

I found a fix on another thread. You need to reboot and press a dialer button straight away so the phone makes a sound soon after reboot. This prevents the call audio issue that happens to some devices every so often.

Galaxy Nexus speaker - no sound

I have a really strange problem - my phones speaker has stopped playing all notification sounds and ringtones, but the earpiece speaker is still functioning fine. I've tried almost everything but it doesn't seem to fix it. I've tried:
-Reflashing the image from Google official
-Flashing a non-official image
-Wiping and flashing the Google image
-Those applications that "force" sound out of the speaker in case a headset is in.
Has anyone here had any similar issues and any success resolving it?

In a call, does loudspeaker work?
I had the opposite problem. My earpiece wouldn't work, but my loudspeaker would. Sent back to where i got it from, they deemed to faulty and sent out a replacement.

Nope - it thinks it is on the loudspeaker but there is just silence. Pity, the warranty has recently run out for me! I might have to crack it open and make sure nothing is loose.

You may need a replacement then as it sounds like you've tried all other attempts, just had a look on ebay and they are fairly cheap anywhere from $10-20 for a replacement speaker.
same thing just happened to my phone. Was playing a game when the sound was cutting in and out. Noticed later that the sound from the speakerphone stopped working completely (i can still use the headpiece or headphones).
Is the speaker/vibration assembly connected by one cable? I assume if the phone still vibrates and the headphone jack works, it's just a problem with the speaker and not some kind of connection problem.
i have this problem. Fix with SoundAbout app.

LG G3 Microphone Sensitivity Issue - Sound distorted

Hello guys,
first off i want to thank everybody sharing their knowledge about the LG G3! I just got mine (D855) and found myself pretty satisfied with this device coming from a Samsung SGS4.
There is one issue i can not seem to find a solution for, the over-sensitive Microphone! No Matter if record a Voice msgs on Whatsapp, a Live Concert via Video or me Playing guitar, i also feel like the MIC Gain is way to high which most of the time leads to a distorted/cracking.
I know there are 2 possible reasons for that:
1. Mic Gain (preamp) is set to a very high value in general, so that the mic captures a too high input level in every app using it (video camera, phone calls, Voice Recorsers etc.)
-> It's a software based issue which needs a fix in the mic gain value's
2. The G3's Mic is just crap, a low-quality mic capsule which handles high impulses very poorly and distorts even BEFORE the signal is amped by the software.
-> Hardware based Issue which afaik can't be fixed.
I know the G2 had similar issues with it's mic picking up sound way to loud. I wonder why there is nobody complaining about the g3 yet. To me this is kind of a deal breaker, especially coming from an SGS4 which could easil record sound at a rock concert!
I hope somebody will dig into that problem and find a (hopelfully) software based solution!
Many Thanks in advance.
Best
Nik

Solution: Turn off the "from any screen" option for "OK Google" detection.
Google Now > Settings > Voice > "OK Google" detection > from any screen
Turned off it will still work in Google Now and on the home screen with the widget.
Calls are all clear now and everyone says they can hear me fine.

Tried that but still no improvement
Are you using a custom rom or kernel for your phone? If so it may be an issue with the rom . If using a custom kernel i believe you can modify mic / sound settings in Kernel Adiutor .

I'm on xdabbebs 46a firmware with his stock kernel
I also had a problem with the microphone. People say they do not hear me clearly, and as I say it cuts my words. It turned out that when the phone fell, some filter at the microphone jumped out of his seat. Repair time 30 minutes. Cost 10 €.

My Issue was with microphone, others can't hear me well
After a lot of search I understood LG G3 has 2 microphone for noise cancellation
Just I put a tape or blocking hole of Top Microphone. Now voila, Microphone works perfect

Speaker Imbalance? or by design?

Is it just me? The top speaker seems move vocal heavy, and the bottom and more mids to lows.
And I just hearing things or does anyone else hear this too?
Is this by design I wonder, maybe the speaker, facing up would be better for vocals?
Try it. Cover the speakers one by one with your thumb and listen.
I hear that too. When I rotate the phone, the sound channel changes but the feeling of heaviness always follow the top speaker.
However, when I measure speakers loudness, the volume is quite similar.
Deactivate the Smart Audio and put it to say Movie/Film. Now its even.
