I'm searching for an app or something to increase my lowest brightness because pixel 2xl screen is kinda sh*tty in very low brightness. All the apps that I can find offer only the opposite by applying a filter.
Anyone knows anything that can be done?

Are you stock or rooted??. If rooted, you can set minimum brightness levels with a custom kernel and the EXKM app :good:
I'm not sure I understand your question.
When set at it's lowest setting, the display brightness is not bright enough?
Why not move the slider to a little brighter of a setting?

Stock rom with flash rooted. I don't see anything that could help in exkm.

That's what I do until now. I was curious though if I can automate it and not mess with the slider all the time. I keep it at the middle with auto brightness but in the dark the brightness gets too low and the black crush and ghosting is unbearable.

Oh. So you want to set the perfect brightness as the lowest settings so you just have to swipe all the way left instead of finding the sweet spot with the slider?
Still crazy, but now I get it

Auto brightness at 50% still gets you crushed blacks? Can't test that now cause I'm on DP2 but I'm pretty sure when I had that same setting, it was too bright for me actually.

Try this to automate completely! :good: Integrates with Tasker and a tasker plugin named Twilight to change based on home or not, sun rise or sun down, travel speed (brighter walking / dimmer in a vehicle). Incrediable app, I've used it for 4-5 years on many devices. Does not require root but works well if you are rooted.

I set it around 40-45 and in a dark room is really bad. Well reading is ok at that brightness but everything else is a nightmare.

Hi,
automatic backlight is still too bright for me in almost any environment. I want to control the brightness of the screen by setting other values.
Is there an app or a hack to do this?
Good question. Loved to know too!
Look under widgets and you will find one called
"Brightness"
I'll let you figure the rest out for yourself

Try to using
Brightenes Level App
I recommend "SwitchPro Widget", which is available from the Marketplace. It allows you to toggle the brightnees, even to levels lower than the automatic setting.
Hi, i dont want to change brightness manually, but want to change the default values which are used for automatic brightness. Is this possible?
Does no one knows??
Hmmm would be handy!

Perhaps you could put some tinted glass/plastic over the sensor, so the phone thinks it's darker than it actually is and doesn't make the screen as bright?

good idea, but that's not the resolution, even in night it's very bright and for me even at manual 1% brightness it's a bit to bright for me...
would be awesome to have more possibilities to work with the amoled screen - by the way - for black it needs 0% energy so better to read white letters on black background
edit: me using "Quick Settings" to handle brightness etc.
Hi I am using dimmer lite download frm market place suits my usage

I would like the automatic brightness to be just a bit more brighter when im outside. Would be great to be able to adjust it!!
If there was something like a -2 -1 0 +1 +2 way to adjust it!
Dont want manually keep setting the brightness all the time.
I just tried the app called Dimmer.
It is perfect.
Goes to a very low setting and then switches back to whatever you had before.
I have the same problem with my Desire that the Auto Brightness doesn't go all the way down and the HTC Denmark support basically just said meh. And said they would report it as a wish for future updates.

This app is great! Thank you!
I have my phone on autobacklight, but I find that in dark settings its too bright!!
This app does what I want with a simple click! Shame however that there's no way to reduce the lowest brightness on auto setting built into the OS.
The lowest brightness setting is not dim enough for me in low light conditions so I've been looking to alter it.
After reading around the capabilities of some apps it seems that they only add an overlay which reduces contrast. I would much prefer to do it natively.
I then realised that the AOKP ROM has this functionality!
However, I can't seem to get it to work.
Settings>Display>Custom backlight settings
Changing the screen dim level doesn't seem to change anything for me.
Can anyone offer some tips or advice?
Thanks

Does your display dim more when you select a lower than default value or did you have to change something else?
Did you change the corresponding value in "Edit Other Levels" as well (if you're on auto brightness)? Not on AOKP, but mine is fully functional both on manual, and auto.
Their implementation is the same as CM9 (which is nearly identical, if not the same as the CM7 implementation).
Edit: just a thought, not sure if the AOKP status bar brightness slider is hardcoded to a certain minimum level? Are the results the same if you adjust your brightness via the Settings>Display>Brightness slider?
Settings>Rom Control>Performance>color multipliers.
Drag the three bars all the way down.
As far as your problem...
Are you on auto brightness?
And have you adjusted the "Dim Level" prior to adjusting the screen levels?
(Dim Level is the level your screen dims to after not touching it for 15 seconds or whatever).

Screen dim level is the minimum brightness value attainable (I lower mine to 12 so I can enter a screen value of 12 in my custom levels), but also does correspond to what you mentioned.
Another AOKP user expressed similar concerns but found an app called Root Dim or something that solved his problem.

The implementation must be still broken then; haven't tested the latest AOKP releases. Root dim apps tend to create lag.

Attaining an altered screen dim level when on auto as well?
Edit: comment wasn't an indictment; just remembering issues that were there on b35 or b36 (?).

I select a lower than normal default brightness, and it appears to just work. The auto brightness decreases, which is what i was looking for at night, and also the overall min brightness decreases. The max brightness seems unaffected...
remember when making these changes you do have to save and apply. many people forget that step.

Lol.
And no offense taken at all, man.
And me personally, I just use 5 levels.
One that goes all the way to 600[whateverambientlightismeasuredby] and a screen level of 5.
This keeps my phone from dicking about with it's brightness when I'm indoors...and I have no problem reading it. I don't mind a super-dim screen in general.
The remaining levels I ramp up fairly aggressively for two "by a window" scenarios...
And outside.
And OMGSUNNY outside.

I add 2 levels for the high end, and reduce the other brightness levels considerably. Ultimately I usually end up with the perfect'ish level for most scenarios. I hate having to adjust brightness the old fashioned way

Yeah, I know an app could potentially solve the problem but I don't like using 3rd party apps when the solution can be more elegantly achieved using native tweaks.

Could you send me a screenshot of your custom levels, that sounds like the exact thing I'm after - a dimmer screen in general, and having a lower min brightness.
So am I correct in thinking that you need to lower the dim value in order to set lower values in the custom levels?
My screen dim level is at 1 and my phone is still too bright. How could I reduce this even further so that sliding my brightness toggle in the notifications bar all the way to low will reduce the brightness even further? Is there not an option or a mod that allows you to pretty much dim your screen to complete darkness?

I see screen filter, the only problem I have with it is its persistent notification. As far as I can see there's no way to remove it. If I could get rid of the persistent notification I would set it to boot with tasker.
Suggestions to remove from notification?
Try lux auto brightness not sure if it has persistent notification or not.

I know about lux too, but it's not what I need.
Is there a way to lower the brightness set by the kernel or is this unchangeable?
Download screen calibrator and it works like a charm, you can also remove the icon from the status bar

Yeah I actually prefer the dropdown notification built into AOKP roms for brightness, but the lowest brightness is too bright. In a room with lights off, reading the amazon kindle before bed is pretty discomforting if you're trying to ease into sleep. Way too bright.
Apparently the only way to do it unless the screen filter author comes up with a way to get rid of that persistent notification/load on startup is to kernel hack, and personally for someone who isn't a developer/programmer, I wouldn't touch an opensource code with a stick
I have the same problem. The lowest brightness is still too high to read something with the lights off.
Hey, I think I actually found something.. do you have cm10? If you do, you can turn on screen filter normally then go to settings > apps > screen filter and uncheck "show notifications". That took away the persistent notification for me.
I don't know if you can do this in aopk.
i have a great solution (with a notification-so i will try your suggestion 386 once my rom is done backing up), but want to make my own personalized "build (apps, tweaks etc) thread". Where can I make it without getting slapped by the mods? In the galaxy s3 general thread or since most of it is can be done on different android phones in the the overall general thread?
Hello Together,
at night, when i am reading in bed or surfing with chrome the display is too bright.
Is there a app or tweak to reduce the minimum screen brightness?
I would prefer not to use an app with a filter overlay. It should really reduce the brightness.
I have read about such an feature with ElementalX Kernel. It did not worked so I changed to stock again.
THANK YOU,

Just disable adaptive brightness and adjust it manually to your liking.
Download the app f.lux , it sure makes the screen easy on my eyes at night
Thanks for your ideas.
Manual brightness lowest setting is no difference.
And i installed f.lux. I do Not like the settings.
Are there further ideas/possibilities?
What did not work with elementalx?
Did you install the kernel correctly and enable the backlight dimmer option? Works for me
Download this xposed module and lower the minimum brightness level.

ElementalX kernel has a feature which allows you to dim the display to a lower value than by default, you may want to check it out.
Try Twilight app
I found an app on Google Play called " TWILIGHT
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.urbandroid.lux
You set the time of day for the phone to dim - early in the morning and late at night. It dims the screen but also shades more reds on the screen as it's better for your eyes before sleep to decrease the bright lights. Been using it for 6 months and I like it. Occasionally - I get a warning of "screen overlay" when I'm using sime new apps that modify phone settings, but you can pause the app to modify settings - and reactivate the Twilight.
Give it a try..
I upgraded my phone from 8.1 to 9.0 yesterday and noticed that my brightness slider is now much higher up to 100% than it used to be. I have to make it go much higher to get bthe same brightness. Going to my old brightness setting makes the screen really dim. Is this a bug?

What does this mean though? Because now it's really dark until you get to over half of the bar then it shoots up quickly. Doesn't make much sense to me. I'm not using auto brightness btw.

Something to do with the non-linear (logarithmic) scale being closer to real world physics or something like that, not exactly sure why it should matter, but Google and others have decided so. It just means that the "graph" of the scale is not a straight line but a curve.
Brightness was fine before the June update. After the June update I have to set it to 83% brightness to get what I was getting at 50% brightness. It's a bug. I flashed back to 8.1 for now.
