USB C PD Worth it? - Google Pixel 2 XL Accessories

Hi! I have a Pixel 2 XL on order from Best Buy so I've been reading through the forums the last few days, as well as reading alot of articles. I think I understand that the phone has capped the charging capacity to 18W, and that it really only charges at 15W for a short period, and then mostly around 10W. So I am wondering if it's worth investing in extra USB C PD chargers for rapid charging? Is the over all charging time less than with the standard USB C?
Also when looking at USB C cables on Amazon, I am seeing USB 3.1 and USB 2.0. I am coming from Nexus 6P and Pixel 1 so I imagine the cables I have are 2.0. My home laptop has 3.0 USB ports and my work laptop is pretty new, so I'm guessing they would be 3.0 or 3.1. I have seen the posts and articles on the issues with the Pixel 2 and 3.0 cables, but not so much with the XL. Is there any reason to upgrade to the 3.1 cables as needed, or should I just stick with 2.0?
Thank you!

It's worth it if you have or eventually get a notebook computer that will utilize Power Delivery charging. Then it's the only charger you'll need on the go. If not, then no. Same goes for 3.1 vs 2.0. one is for the future proofing and one is for the present.

Old Nexus 6 Charger?

This is probably a dumb question, but if I buy some USB-C -> USB cables, can I use my old Nexus 6 charging bricks and still get fast charge on my Pixel? I have a couple of them from my Nexus 6, and I'd hate for them to be useless now.
Don't take my word for gospel but the OEM Nexus 6 charging block has the same output voltage as the pixels block.

I used the USB cable that came with the XL with my N6 charger last night. Seems to work just fine.
You absolutely can. Just make sure you have a Benson approved cable.
Also, it won't charge as fast as the OEM charger.
The N6 Charger Specs:
Nexus 6 battery is 3220mAh Turbo charger rates:
[email protected]=14.4W (Turbo 2)
[email protected]=14.4W (Turbo 1)
[email protected] =9W (Standard output)
You will only get standard output since the Type-C standard is 5v only. So you will charge at approximately 1.6A rather than the approximate 3A from the Pixel Charger

This may be helpful.
Below is a quote from a Google engineer from another forum.
"Will it be safe to use my nexus 6p USB-C charger with the pixel/XL?
I would advise against it. Please use the charger that comes in the Pixel box with it.?* The Nexus 6P charger will technically work with the cord it comes with, but if you use a USB-IF certified USB3.1 cord, the Nexus 6P charger behaves badly.
You do not want to risk a $800 phone on a $10 charger. If you use the OEM 18W Pixel charger, warranty will cover any problems you encounter.
Also, will it be safe to use any qualcomm Quickcharge charger?
Is the Qualcomm QuickCharge charger USB Type-A (square plug) or Type-C (round plug)?
Type-A (square plug) QC chargers: it depend on the manufacturer. Some make good chargers, others make bad. It depends on the maker.
Type-C (round plug) QC chargers: these are bad and go against the spec. I do not recommend using any Type-C Qualcomm QuickCharge chargers.
also, according to the processor spec, it does support quickcharge 3.0
No. The Pixel does not support QC at all. It uses USB-PD (PowerDelivery) at [email protected] and [email protected] levels. You need a USB-PD power supply with those levels or greater.
will there be any harm or advantage if i use a quick-charge 3.0 certified charger?
You need to speak to QualComm. I have personally tested "QualComm Certified" chargers that are bad. I have data to prove this. However there are many "good" QC3.0 chargers as well.
There will be no harm (if the charger is good). There is no advantage (if the charger is good). A QC Type-A charger will work like any other USB-A port and charge at 1.5A maximum. (It remains to be seen if the Pixel will recognize Apple 2.4A charging.)."

Awesome, thanks for the reply! So from what I am understanding, the cable is more important than the charging brick? I charge my phone every night, and I want to avoid fast charging in that scenario since I've heard that Fast Charges create more wear and tear on the battery than a standard charge. That being the case I'd like to use an old standard charging brick (like a samsung one) and then use a certified USB - USB-C cable to charge the phone.

Can a Quick Charge 3.0 charger be used with the Pixel 2 XL?

Hi,
I have several car chargers that use Quick Charge 3.0. Would it be safe to charge the new Pixel 2 XL with those chargers, and would it provide fast charge?
Thanks!
It will charge but not at the same rate as the stock charger 9v/2a. It will slow charger the pixel fine assuming your charger is good and you are using a good Usb-a to usb-c cable.
Quick charge is a qualcomm proprietary charging method that the pixel doesn't use. If you want fast charging I would suggest finding a usb-if certified usb-c charger that does 9v/2a. Obviously, the one on the Google store that comes with the pixel should work.
One word of caution. If you follow Benson Leung and Nathan K. on Google+, you will see there are a ton of out-of-spec usb c chargers and cables on the market. That is why I suggest that you buy one that is usb-if certified. That should offer you some level of safety (though not always, I'm looking at you belkin and your 27w car charger with power delivery)

Yup. It's my understanding anything that goes from USB-A to USB-C, regardless of what kind of charger it is, will always charge at 1A or less.
Also make sure if you "have" to charge USB-A to USB-C, you don't use a "bad" cable. (see Bensen reviews)

My understanding is that you are referring to a cable that is wired for both data and charge. I have several "charge only" A to C cables that are wired different from data / charge cables. These charge my XL quite rapidly.
I believe quick charge 4.0 all also supports power delivery. But, I haven't found a 4.0 charger.

Looking for the Quick Charge 3.0 charger for Google Pixel 2 XL ? I am just now using Choetech for my Google Pixel XL . It have an ability to Quick Charge 3.0 and USB Type-C ports. So, you can charge different phablets like Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL which are compatible with these ports.

Can no longer rapid charge with my PC

So this is very frustrating. I built a new PC in March that has a type C port on the back. I bought a Choetech C to C cable for it and zip tied it to my speaker wires so it would stay on my desk for rapid charging. I had a nexus 6p then and it worked without a hitch, I was able to get up to 3amps according to the ampere app and it displayed "charging rapidly" on the screen. Now I'm doing some stuff on my computer and decided to plug in my pixel XL, and I'm getting "Charging slowly" and its not charging faster than 480mah. Windows is up to date and my Pixel XL is on 8.1. Just tried the factory USB cable to see if that was the problem, and same thing, still doesn't want to rapid charge my phone. I don't know where to start to figure this out. Is this some weird oreo setting? Is it something in windows? BTW the motherboard is a MSI B350 Tomahawk. Thanks
Most USB ports are 5V w/ X amp - these phones use a higher charging voltage for rapid charging, resulting in slower charging from previous rapid charging adapters or ports.

Yeah but this is a type C USB 3.1 port, and it has rapidly charged my Nexus 6p I had previously on more than one occasion just like plugging it into the wall. A type C port on a PC is capable of supplying 15 watts I believe.
I just put a type C charger on my power strip. So freaking annoyed about this. About to RMA my motherboard. No one has any answers for me. The port is literally useless as I can get USB 3.1 slow charging out of my regular type A ports. Am I the only guy in the world that used his PC with a type C port to charge his type C phone? Sure seems that way.
The same happened to me. I have PC with a mobo with USB-C 3.1. When I got my Pixel XL, a few months ago, I clearly saw quick charge when I used it... but now (I don't use a lot charging over my PC) I plugged it to my computer and no more... any ideas?! Maybe February or March update ruined?!

I have usb 3.1 on my computer and don't get rapid charging.
I mean, if your computer works with your 6p, then you know it's an issue with the pixel xl. it might be software, it might be hardware - when you use original cable/charger you get QC?

well this is not so true... I have a car charger from anker, with 2 usb + 1 usb-c port and I get quick charge from usb-c port!!! And I'm using a usb-c cable from anker too.
I have the MSI Tomahawk B350 as well. The type-c port doesn't seem to recognize my Pixel 2 XL nor charges it at all. It's a new PC build so going to have to contact MSI to see what's up with that.
Guess what guys, the fast charge that I lost a few months ago, now with the October update, I finally have Charge Rapidly when charging via USB-C on my windows PC !!!! Yeahhh!!!

Why can't I get Quick Charge working

So I have a qc3 outlet and battery from Anker neither will fast charge the phone using any of the cables including the og cable with the USB adapter provided or with the latest set of cables I purchased.

Right in the reviews people say they dont fast charge sometimes. One guy said to flip it 180 degrees and see if it works. You get what you pay for with these cheap cables.

Strange, I didn't think this phone supported the QC charging standard as it uses PD instead. And as far as I know, they're not cross compatible. But I've been wrong before...
i dont think these cable support fast charging for Pixel and only way to get fast charging is with using USB-C cable that has PD support.
I can't even get fast charging with the included Charger and Cable.....
Mine fast charged consistantly with included charger and PD charger I got off Amazon. Until February update. Now I'm only getting 480mah during charge. My daughter's Nexus 5x gets 1700mah during charge.

What you are missing is, that this phone is not compatible with QC standards,
Pixel using USB PD, just like on Nexus 6p and 5x, also like what being used by apple on iPhone X and their new macbook.
If you want quick charge pixel phone. Buy USB PD charger, and USB C to C cable that support PD as well, not QC charger.
Anker has several models supporting PD, but in term of price, Choetech or Aukey might be better option, am using choetech myself.
Or you can get nexus 6p/5x charger instead for just 7 bucks. It even inc USB C-C cable.
If you feel adventurous, you can even buy Apple 30W USB PD charger for 40 bucks, it will fast charge ypur pixel as well.
So is there a battery pack that would work with this and maybe an outlet. This is rather frustrating one of the reasons I got rid of op 5t which had amazing charging but proprietary. This is not as limited but still bs.

Actually USB PD in term of product cost and availability is even more BS. Its easier to buy dash charger , and it even cheaper.
If you need a battery pack that support PD, you can get one from ANKER, but the price is simply amazing. I think its around $100 for the battery pack.
As for outlet brick, you can get choetech for around $11 inc cable. Or find nexus charger for around $7. Aukey and Anker outlet would cost you around $15-30
QC is proprietary as well. PD is the only universal standard, but Qualcomm has invested too much money into QC to make the switch now. One day, Google is going to force PD compliance for all Android builds. Until then, be patient or accept the fact that early adapters like us will simply pay more until prices come down.

Question re: cable for Pixel 2XL

I am LOVING my Pixel 2XL as a previous iPhone user but I am needing assistance on power cables. What cable would I need to connect the 2XL to my laptop which only has regular USB cable slots?

You should be able to connect it with that cable. The end that plugs into the laptop/PC is the standard USB type; it's the end that plugs into the phone that's USB-C.
The others are incorrect. The phone comes with a usb-c to usb-c cable. What you need for your regular usb ports is usb-c to usb-a. Such as https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics...sb+a+cable&dpPl=1&dpID=41wgZRjwXYL&ref=plSrch

Correct quick charge will only happen using a usb-c to usb-c cord (and, knowing google, the actual charger) like what came with the phone.

Correct, unless the aftermarket charger supports USB-C power delivery. Qualcomm quick charge is not sufficient in this case.
So for those that charge their Pixel 2XL through the usb port on a laptop - how long does it take to charge your phone?

What you're doing wrong is not spending the extra funds to get a proper charger. USB ports on a PC are limited to 500mAh, thus charging will take an extremely long time. Some laptops do have a USB port designed to output a higher amperage, but they don't output the minimum of 2 amps used in smartphone chargers from the last five years.
If you don't have a proper charger, get one.
I was thinking of getting a battery pack. Is there one that has the capability of fast charging the Pixel 2xl and an iPad at the same time?

Research the Power Delivery (PD) specification. Then research PD power banks. There are many that output > 30W but it's doubtful you could charge both devices rapidly at the same time... but the PD power bank would charge either device rapidly. If you really need to charge both devices at the maximum rate simultaneously, you would be better off with a capable PD wall charger. There is also a P2XL "Accessories" section here where you will find more information on cables, chargers and power banks.

Then use a USB-A to USB-C cable and accept the slow charging rate. Your laptop's USB power output is the limiting factor here, not the cable. You will need a PD charger (or power bank) to charge rapidly.
With USB-C still not as common as MicroUSB, are there any power banks with Power Delivery?

Absolutely. If you are in the market be sure you confirm the powerbank allows USB-C both input & output so you can use your PD wall charger to top it off. The first generation power banks only allowed PD output, and you had to use the slower microUSB to charge. I've got my eye on THIS ONE. Just waiting for a price drop. :good:
Well I'm not in the market, but thanks for the information. I simply hadn't seen or heard of any.

What iPad model do you have? Some of them support USB-PD for fast charging via USB Type C, but not all of them do. If it does support USB-PD fast charging, find a powerbank that supports it and you should have no issues. (Pixel 2 XL can use USB-PD as well)
