well i had a nexus 7 (2013) laying around and decided i want to put it into my car for a few different reasons. well after pulling all my hair out and using every curse word known to man i finally figured out how to root it. now for 2 weeks ive been reading forums, watching youtube vids, and google searching like crazy. trying to figure out what kernel to use for it, and how to set up tasker. at this point i'm so lost i almost walked away from it........only reason i'm still entertaining the idea is so i can store different tunes on it for my car.
so now that i have that out of the way, i am willing to pay (thats how frustrated i am) for someone to log into my laptop thru teamviewer and do it for me lol. if this is frowned upon i apologize now, i just don't know what to do at this point.

Yes. You need to root it.
If you're dedicating it to the car use Timur's kernel, It's free now since it's not being supported anymore, but then again neither is the tablet.
Tasker is extremely daunting, Try Automate instead. It's still incredibly powerful but uses blocks that makes programming so much easier. And you can find many flows, what Automate calls it's "programs", through the community to get you going, learn from, or pick apart.
Keep in mind Timur's has a separate kernel for wifi and lte.
Timur's: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=673956719939830775
Automate: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.llamalab.automate
Oh, and just go straight to CarWebGuru Launcher: https://play.google.com/store/search?q=CarWebGuru+Launcher&c=apps
i appreciate the response, i am having tons of issues. i can't figure out how to get timur installed. tried quite a few times with no luck. i was able to get elemental x installed but thats it. it doesn't do what i need for the permanent install though. starting to lose faith lol

It's the same exact process. You download timur's mod and flash the services and usb-host through twrp.
Flashing is the easiest part of this process. it can be frustrating at times but once you figure it out and get it done you'll be proud.
Trust me, it took a year for me to get my power issues sorted out. You can do it.
Actually not the same, I installed ex kernel manager and it installed it for me. I downloaded Timur from the link posted above . Tried numerous times to install and no luck

Is the link you posted for the WiFi kernel ? If not that's what I need
I haven't downloaded from that links since I have the files from when I donated. It says flo-deb so I'm assuming it has both.
well i think i'm done. about to throw this thing in the trash

I have come over from Window Mobile like most and when I come to the Andriod forums, this is like learning Chinese on the fly with all the lingo. I was able to get my Imagio doing all I wanted, but this root thing sounds crazy.
So, way before I get into this root, I have a couple of questions.
1. If i root, will everything work as it does if it is stock. I know there is some things added, like tethering, but can I run all the apps I have bought on the market and do I have to pay for them again or just re-download.
2. I have seen the ten min vidoe on root, but he goes way too fast for me and I find myself watching the vidoe four hundred times just to get through the first minute. Where does someone get the files he is cutting and pasting onto the computer? Are those part of the files that come with the HTC sync or do you have to download them?
Sorry for the questions, but I would love to have the wifi-tethering like most but can't afford to screw this phone up. Since being part of the XDA adn PPCgeeks, I have had all questions answered and I have been able to get where I need to be on my phone without having to sell any of my guns to make up for buying a broken phone!
Thanks, in advance.
1. yes, everything will work fine
2. read the sticky in this sub-forum for rooting
Having root won't affect anything at all with your apps or contacts. Phone will be exactly the same with the addition of superuser priviledges (as long as you follow all the directions in the 10 min video.
All the files you need are in the file that is linked in the info pane of the 10 minute root video on youtube.
Make sure you follow the directions and you will be fine. Goodluck.
Google will remember your download history and purchases as long as you link up your gmail.
As always, thanks guys. Being a police officer, sometimes we have to do some long sitting details for security purposes and having a phone that can tether to the lap top while sitting in the car is a must! You guys rock.
Hello guys. I'd like to start by saying I'm familiar with phones to a certain degree. I'm not completely lost. I'm coming from an iPhone. I had my 3g for about 2 years Nd was very happy with it. Was a snap to jailbreak and the info was easy to find. Not to mention the community was great. Needless to say I've now upgraded to the Evo so I'm now here. I've been searching these forums and YouTube like mad trying to figure this phone out. There are so many options and different options on here. I'm so lost right now. Everytime I find a thread which seems like its the answer it ends up being the answer to another application and not mine. When I first got the phone I used the unrevoked method for rooting. I'm guessing that's the equivalent to jailbreaking on the iPhone. Now all was well, I use the tethering at work with my laptop. The new update came out promising better battery life. I searched for how to retain my root and also be able to update. The answer seemed to be the new version of the unrevoked. Version 3 I believe. I did the ota update then tried to use unrevoked 3.1. It didn't work for me. I haven't been able to tether for like 3 weeks now. I don't know where I am or where I should be at this point. I wish this android stuff was more straight forward for new people. I want to know what should I be doing right now. Am I assed out temporarily or is there a way to get my root back? Greatly appreciate the help. I'm sure there are other people lost in this huge forum.
I completely agree. I have spent the past 2 hours trying to figure out this stupid OTA simpleroot thing and I still don't have root. This community is probably the most unorganized thing I have ever seen in my life hands down. Jailbreaking an iPhone needed 1 app that took 30 seconds. This thing needs 50000000 links to 10000 different things to install and configure just to change a theme....
Did this work?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=720565
Give it some time, your going from absolute control to open source. There is much more that can be done, it takes time to adjust from one major system to the other. Read threads take your time. Playing with the phone is often the best training one can have.
Thanks for the prompt responce silkyt but that didnt work either. I watched the video and the thing that were happening on the phone in the video wasnt happening on mine. i have htfc sync and the netframework 4 installed. Phopne rebooted once and was still in the same state. This is an example of a thread I mightr have come across that seema to be an answer for me but really wasnt. I'm not clear on am i stuck with this update until the hacking community finds an answer or is there something i'm missing? build is 1.47.651.1 firmware is 2.1 and baseband is 2.05.00.06.10

1.) Go back to iPhone?
2.) Don't root your phone?
3.) Figure it out your self and ask for help in the appropriate fourm/thread? Instead of whining and saying that the community sucks and the simple root sucks...
Oh and just for a little addition, even a Jailbroken iPhone couldn't do a tenth of what the Evo can do once rooted.

I completely agree. You should leave. First post, isn't a question, isn't help, it's a "THIS PLACE SUCKS" post. Please leave, return your android and go back to your iPhone. You're comparing a bicycle to a car and wonder why it's more complicated. The phone has been out for just over a month with 2 over-the-air updates already. The 1-click iPhone Jailbreak wasn't out this fast for the first iPhone, and you complain? Get a life.

So you've got stock 1.47.651.1 without root. When you boot the phone while holding the volume down button, do you have the option to enter Recovery? If you do, then enter recovery and see what version it is. If you come up to a screen with an exclamation point or a box, then you don't have a recovery installed. If you've got a bunch of options to scroll through with the volume buttons, then you've got one installed and are already rooted, all you would need to do is install a ROM.
Now, while you're in there, check what version of HBoot you have (it's at the top of the menu that comes up while holding the volume down button.)
If it's version 0.79.0000 then you could follow this thread, and then this one to regain root. Granted, they aren't "1-click" methods, but they are pretty easy if you take the time, and you'll be much more educated to fix problems in the future.
If you have version 0.76.2000, then you can just follow the second thread back to root.
Also, this belongs in Q&A in the future, not General.
Thanks for the help. It's a little overwhelming to be a new android user. I like that there are alot of options in terms of how you want your phone to work. I like that there are a verity of roms for different users. I have hboot 0.79.0000 and the recovery option takes me to the screen with the exclamation mark. Gonna check those threads you mentioned and hopefully be on my way to understanding this new os. I'll let you know if it works. Whats an adb by the way?
ADB = Android Debug Bridge and is basically a commandline to your phone

Hey OP did you check this out - http://theunlockr.com/category/howto/android_how_tos/htc-evo-how-tos/
Hi everyone,
First of all, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone here for being such a great resource in the past. I have performed many roots via guides on here.
My real question, I was super excited to get KitKat and immediately accepted the AT&T Software Update...2 hours later I realized that my Portable WIFI Hotspot app was no longer functional due to the upgraded OS. I figured a factory reset would be fine since it wasnt KitKat when it first came to me, sadly it wasn't.
Does anyone have any advice for a work around? I have unlimited data with AT&T right now and do not wish to sacrafice that for hotspot services but it is a very convienent feature to have when I am on the go. I've thought of rooting, reverting (which didn't work), and search hours in the app store testing different ones.
Any and all advice/suggestions will be greatly appreciated
Thank you in advance guys and gals!:good:
There is no way around it without rooting, until they create another app, unless there is one that I don't know about. You need a modified framework file in the system directory, which cannot be accessed without root permissions. I'm guessing that you were using foxfi, like so many others around here. I might be wrong.
And next time, please do some research before accepting these toys, I mean OTAs. (I keep calling them toys, because the only reason I see why we so quickly rush to these OTAs is to play with them.) There is plenty of useful information here at XDA for you. Don't just look to fix your problem and then run. Some of the purposes of OTAs are to prevent rooting and block tethering (Foxfi has been broken a couple of times). When you do some more reading, you will see all of the problems that many are having around here after jumping to play with this new toy, I mean update, without waiting or doing enough research.
Personally, one of the best things I have done with my phone is not accepting this latest OTA.
ya, I completely regret not doing my usual research. I thought I read somewhere that you cant root this current version as well. If you can root, if someone could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it, if not I can take a look around after work
The app was Portable WIFI Hotspot
Here you go if you need to root. It's in the general section.

I recently read a post, I don't know where now, but it had to do with a hidden Trojan/malware. That was started in 2013... After reading, thinking back to when this really started affecting me Feb,26, 2015. I noticed some strange things mentioned in my service log from around that date. The post mentioned how it places a high tracker in some obscure app. Unfortunately I got the bug, BAD!!! So not knowing about this until I made it worse by plugging my phone into my computer... I'm sure you can figure out the rest. My everything is screwed now. My HTC one m7, is the only device I can use period, now. I tried to root, and couldn't. Then downloaded another root checker, and it said my device was already rooted. Is there anything I can do(on my knees begging). This has to be the worst inter-web experience ever. Any and all ideas, advice, similar problems, links, and time are greatly appreciated. Thank you

My phone is the only thing I can use... I have to install Windows again on my lap top... I have a new disc and what not. I'm just worried that he'll just take that over as well.. so phone, but I could use some tips in how to do it for the pc as well and if I'll ever be able to get my email. With my last ten years if web activity, Xbox one and everything else I had.... So pissed
for the phone, i recommend an ruu. in case that bug is somewhere on the phone waiting for another PC victim. It sucks that you will lose everything but its hard to figure out what file is infected and if you restore any file after format you run the chance of it happening again
as for the pc. if you can reboot to safe mode you can use a tool called Combofix. it will sometimes fix problems due to worms or viruses. I've used it many of times i cant fix it manually.
Today is one of the days per year that I have a full Saturday without my family around to bug me. As I sit here wasting my day trying to figure out how to "have it all", I have to "vent". I don't understand why this is so difficult. It's not about the money, I would write a check with several zeros if someone could find a solution for me. All I want, is a phone that Google and Apple can't track, but is still functional for my needs.
LineageOS with Micro is ALMOST that solution. But, every day something doesn't work like it should. I need to be able to schedule texts and send MMS messages that don't sacrafice quality. What do you user for that? Google Messages. Well, I don't want to sign into Google so none of those features work. In fact, even if I do sign in, none of those features work. Ok, I'll try Textra. Nope. Won't work with MicroG because it "needs google service". I have tried around a dozen messaging apps, but either they don't schedule texts or they don't send MMS.
I drive 1,000s of miles for work in different vehicles in unfamiliar areas. I listen to many podcasts and take lots of phone calls on the road. So, given the amount of travel and variation of vehicles I drive, having a physcial GPS or using a phone mount isn't practical. Using my phone as a handheld GPS isn't smart. What's left? Android Auto. Ok, I've tried using a separate phone for Android Auto, but then phone calls don't come through. I've almost crashed trying to juggle those.
What am I working on today? I've been using Brave Browser, but I also use 1password. 1password functionality is broken on 90% of the sites I visit on Brave, so I downloaded Firefox. 1password works great, but my corporate security app routes everything from Firefox through itself, and breaks everything. It doesn't happen with Brave and I can't delete my work app. So Brave wins that battle.
So I thought -- why don't I just install LinesageOS with gapps, create a brand new google account to login with, and never use that google ID anywhere else. But after some research and asking on different message boards, THAT doesn't work either.
At this point, how does someone in my shoes not just say f#*k it, you win Google/Apple, and go back to a stock OS?

NO WAY, over my dad's cat!
I do understand and share your frustration but giving up is not a good choice here.
Sometimes less is more, I don't use MicroG at all and people keep pestering me since years to get Whatsapp, Signal, Threema, Telegram, Slack, Discord and all that ****. Nah, stop being stupid and just keep using email, SMS or jabber.
Unless another Noah posts free tickets for Ark 2 on whatsapp, I am perfectly fine, I guess
A little late on my reply! Figured I'd still throw this out there.
I can't use Librem & iodeOS because of work requirements. I have to use their applications for email/messaging etc. Unfortunately the apps also detect/block Custom ROMs so I have no choice but to root so I can use magisk.
Literally the only reason I want Google Messages (which, for what I want requires chat features enabled) is to schedule messages without losing other functionality. QKSMS works great, but you can't share videos. Several others that are recommended won't work without Google services. There was one that worked really well but crashed every couple hours and would only work after uninstalling.
Android Auto, I could care less which application I use TBH, but nothing else will do what I need. I need the map to display on the cars screen so I'm not staring at my phone. A second phone isn't an option because 1. I'd lose it 2. Work won't pay for a phone because they suck and I can't afford 2 plans. Same excuses for a dedicated GPS. A phone mount is difficult because of the sheer variety of vehicles I drive, and I usually don't know what I'll be driving. So I'd have to take several styles of mount on every trip.
All that said --- I vented and I feel better. I'm just dealing with the problems.

That sounds familiar. A previous company insisted on iphone which I despised but I tried anyway for a month, ever since I hate everything crapple even more
But wait, can't solve issue 1... issue 2: Hotspot on company phone? Muahahahaaa
