I rooted my phone using the wiki guide for Cyanogenmod, but now tried to return to stock and seem to be having problems.
Using ROM Manager, I reverted back to my backup, however I can't seem to get any updates. No notifications of an available update, and manually checking for one says my phone is up to date.
Before rooting I had downgraded so I know I'm not at the latest version.
I tried unrooting my phone by following a video saying to remove these files with a file manager :
system/bin/su
/system/binx/su
/system/app/superuser.apk (something like that)
There was no su file in /system/binx
Is there an easy way to just revert to factory settings, no root, and working updates?

you can try flashing the proper ruu via hboot. why not just flash a new rom alltogether? I mean you rooted your phone, are you not after superuser function? a better os? there are custom roms very similar to stock to pick from and also many that are far superior, either way...

I was indeed looking for superuser access, but was now giving the phone away to a family member who didn't have interest in anything special.
I also had trouble rooting it again after I deleted the files, but got it working after simply pushing the files back on, so I flashed the MIUI Rom which looks great and user friendly.

I updated to Kit Kat right away, I tried using that root toolkit thing or whatever... it got my tablet unlocked but it would stay stuck on a message that it was trying to boot some .img file when I clicked root...
Long story short, I restored 2 times and I guess that doesnt work with Kit Kat yet... and I relocked my tablet. Anyway know how I can correctly unlock and root my new Nexus 7 on Kit Kat?
After an unlock you can manually flash the recovery IMG then just flash the super su zip for root.
Adb fastboot recoveryimage.IMG
Then the super su zip can be flashed once in a custom recovery.
If needed I can do a team viewer with you and get you all set up.

Dear Experts,
I'm still new at this game, so bear with me please.
I have a LTE N7 on 4.3.1 (JLS361) that is unlocked & rooted.
Now I get tho OTA Update to 4.4 (KRT16S) downloaded & ready to install.
Aside from all those bad things that don't work anymore in 4.4 (eg. FLASH), what will happen ?
Will my N7 revert to a locked & unrooted device ? or will it stay unlocked & rooted ?
Or will it stay unlocked, but unrooted, and I only need to flash the SuperSU ZIP again ?

Mine is also unlocked and rooted and want to upgrade to KK.
When you said flash, you meant I had to install TWRP first then flash SU again?
I am curious because when I first rooted my N7, I used the Nexus 7 Toolkit and did not install TWRP. Can't I just use the toolkit again to re-root?

If you had a TWRP installed and downloaded the superuser binaries when you rooted initially, all you need to do is flash them again by pressing the "install" button in recovery. Based on the way he asked it, I believe that was the context of the question.
If you don't, you should install a custom recovery:
Wi-Fi only: http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/flo
LTE: http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/deb
Then download the superuser binaries to your N7:
http://download.chainfire.eu/370/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip
And flash them by pressing the "install" button in recovery.
Your toolkit might work, but why not just do it yourself?

You can install another custom recovery, e.g., clockworkmod.
Some toolkits reflash stock recovery after rooting, but that could only useful if you have something like a Samsung or HTC. Absolutely no point on a nexus device.

Thanks again for the help, xdhall. Sorry if I sound like a newbie, but I had the Note 8.0, I rooted and I could never get it back to stock. The original stock image for the US Note 8.0 was not available so I was stuck.
Didn't want the same thing happened with the N7, but you brought up a good point... this IS a Nexus device!

That makes it much easier to get back to ROOT then.
Just having to reboot in Recovery Mode and install the latest superSU.zip will be a breeze.
I'll probably wait a few weeks/months to upgrade to 4.4 though, as the comments on the 4.4 release are not that good, and I have several very important (for me) sites that still use Adobe Flash.
Anyway, I'm glad I haven't to start from scratch (backup, unlock, restore, flash recovery, flash superSU), as this is extremely time-consuming and tedious.

I'm new to this stuff so apologies in advance.
I'd like to root my nexus and run/install sky go (UK TV streaming app) at the same time but sky go does not work on rooted devices. I've searched the forums and the interweb but I can't find a solution to this issue with the latest/tablet version of sky go. It seems that the root detection is quite good in this app. very annoying.
so plan B is to setup my nexus with two rom's that I can quickly interchange. One would be stock 4.4.2 unrooted and I'd use this for sky go. The second rom would be rooted and what I use day to day.
Is there any way to do this? What are the options? I am assuming that I will need to use Titanium backup (or similar) to backup data.
Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

I think I need to install twrp using command line method - for general rom management. It says to download the file but is this to the nexus or the computer that is connected via USB?
It also mentions to 'Run the following command via the command line: fastboot flash recovery recoveryfilename.img'. I am assuming from the computer. correct?

MultiROM Manager might be a good way to go. Have your primary ROM rooted and a secondary ROM installed just for Sky Go.
I'm not sure how you would be able to install a custom recovery without root on the stock ROM. What you can do though is keep the stock ROM rooted and multiboot a different ROM that does not have root built into it. (Those Roms would be the ones where you have to flash superuser)

Forgive me as I'm new to this but soon as you install superuser you will not get sky go believe me I've tried all different ways it simply not gonna happen that's what stopping me from rooting my nexus !! Its a bummer for sure !!!!

Hey, everyone. It's been a long time since I've rooted my phone. I ended up hard bricking it and getting a new one. (I tried using ROM Manager to update my Clockwork Mod and it downloaded and installed, and when it said it needed to restart the device, I accepted, and that was the last time I was able to use the phone).
Anyway, I got it replaced and I haven't rooted it. It's been about 8 months or so and I've decided I want to root my phone again. However, after doing a little research, I saw that rooting is now different when the device is running 4.4.2. I want to be able to run CyanogenMod and flash nightlies and whatnot. Is it safe for me to root my phone and flash CyanogenMod? If so, could someone direct me step by step to doing it? It's been so long and I don't want to brick another phone.
tl;dr -> havent rooted a phone in almost a year, kinda forgot how. SPH-L710 running 4.4.2. is it safe? how do i do it? i want cyanogenmod

you wont brick it by rooting but here is 3 methods
1. first and mostly recommended flash Philz recovery for the D2Lte in Odin just make sure your on the latest one then root your stock rom with the option under Philz settings called Re-root(SuperSU)
2. you can use any recovery and flash the SuperSU zip from Chain fire
3. you can just use TowelRoot for the actual rooting process then download SuperSU and BusyBox from the PlayStore
method 2 implies that you already have a recovery installed
method 3 will give you root but no recovery

Towelroot is super easy to use, its a one click method.
You can find a full guide for the S3 here
Pretty simple to do though,
Download the TowelRoot apps from http://towelroot.com.
Enable Unknown sources on your phones, normally this option located on Settings > Security.
Install the downloaded app (tr.apk).
Now run the app, just tap the “make it ra1n” button to start rooting.
Let the app perform the root job, wait for about 15 seconds and your phone will restart automatically.
As soon as the phone is turned on, update SuperSU to v1.99r4 or newer.

In my case, TowelRoot didn't work due to Samsung Knox secure boot locks the recovery rom. You can't either go to recovery mode at all or read your phone internal storage/external SD storage from TWRP. I flashed CF-Auto-Root-d2spr-d2spr-sphl710.tar.md5 and it would get SuperSU installed to your phone. The SuperSu stopped working when disabling Knox.
Alternatively, I tried to downgrade to the 4.04 or 4.1.2 stock rom by Odin, but failed. So far, I don't have any way to root my phone and install CM11. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

ok, I got stock 4.4.4 but with root, bootloader is locked..
I wanna be able to receive the OTA update what do I need to do in order to be able to receive that?
or do I need to unlock the bootloader, install a recovery and flash lollipop threw that?
If you have stock system, kernel, and recovery, (no altered system files, either) being rooted won't keep you from getting the OTA. Locked/unlocked bootloader doesn't matter. If you rooted with SuperSu, just use its settings to uninstall root (you'll lose it anyway). However, I think you have to unlock bootloader to reroot, which, of course, will wipe your device. The OTA zip is now available for adb sideload if you're interested.
nvm got stock recovery back on, lol still learning, is it better to side load or can i use flash stock + unroot on the nexus root toolkit v1.9.3 to do the same?

OTA won't wipe regardless of how you get it--over the air or sideloaded. Wug's will wipe unless you tell it not to (Options>Flash Stock>Enable no wipe). He also has the LRX21P build available. IMO, one way isn't better than another.
ok, I just tried to sideload and looks like i got a driver issue :\ lol followed the steps in the installation guide and did the test.. it works great up till i go into stock recovery and hit sideload lol then it disconnects and tells me no driver found...
i might just try flash stock + unroot and choosing LRX21P, that wont lock my bootloader correct? and should I be a little worried that the driver cant be found for that specific thing? thanks for all the help btw!
You probably already did all this, but you have to specifically send command to lock boot loader. I don't get how your device wasn't recognized through stock recovery but is on NRT, but it doesn't matter. Just use the kit which is what you probably did.
What you should do is back up what you need and want, then unlock the bootloader. You're not gonna get root without it on Android L since it requires a custom kernel.

Based on this, I assumed you unlocked your bootloader since first posting. NRT recognizes the device, right? Have you gotten it all sorted out yet.
idk why adb sideloading would kick the connection out, then the pc would say nexus 7 but wrong driver?, anyways i just went ahead and flashed the factory image using flash stock + unroot since I had it all backed up anyways, and that went great now I got lollipop on it, and should be able to root no probs now
thanks everyone, I hope i dont have a issue with adb again, im not sure if it was the samsung cord or what but it kept disconnecting at that part asking for a driver.. funny thing everything from bootloader, fastboot and all worked great with the driver that I installed using the steps in the toolkit..
Glad it's all good. Root with the toolkit. Just for the heck of it, you may want to try running CMD from wug's ADB folder. I've experienced just the opposite with older versions of the kit. NRT wouldn't recognize device. I'd go to CMD and device recognized. Return to NRT, all good again.
