firmware confusion - Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Questions & Answers

Which firmware versions are we suppose to use for Oreo builds, developer or stable? I see some people talking about v8 firmware and some talking about v9 firmware. To me it seems like v9 would be the most recent because it's a higher version number but I get the impression that v8 is the most recent?

MIUI dev is a version behind, but should be more updated.

Latest Rom 550ML

i heard that latest rom for 550ML got too many bugs. (2.19.40)
and a few days later, ASUS release a new rom with a bugfix. (2.19.40.13)
so i want to ask if the latest rom is stable enough? or still got a major bug on it?
do you prefer upgrade to the latest rom or downgrade to the previous version?
upgrade to 2.19
downgrade to 2.17
which one is more stable?
anyone?

upgrade it might not cause a trouble to your device as many are saying mainly US users that the phone is now more smooth and giving better SOT but as an indian user i didn't feel this change rather a deproving one so it depends on u and if u don't want to update then wait for the 5.1 1 release which is on 15-17
wow great. i think i'll wait for 5.1.1 instead flashing the 2.19 version. yeayyyy we will get new lollipop update! but where did you get this information?

just check by searching "5.1 lollipop asus zenfone 2"
I haven't seen any issues with 2.19.40.13. So I'm wondering where these bug stories are coming from.

Operating system/Firmware question

So, as I understand. This phone works similarly in the way the Moto G did in the sense that the Firmware and the actual ROM are seperate?
firmware controlling things in the background and the ROM being front and center?
Theoretically speaking, I could run Lineage 14.1 with HTC MM Firmware AND Nougat firmware? (Obviously not at the same time)
Only reason I ask is I come from a G3 which requires TWRP and all roms to be "Bumped" so things are a bit different (No bootloader unlock)

If you read the LOS installation instructions you see that it support both MM and N. Supported firmware depends on the rom, though many roms will ask you during installation which firmware you're running and support both.

So what are the advantages/disadvantages of using either mm or nougat firmwares? Do they effect anything realistically?

Nougat firmware could have more advanced radios for improved signal.
A caution: don't mix Marshmallow and Nougat firmware bits, such as aboot.
I did that and ruined a perfectly good Ten.

If so I wont even be bothering with that stuff.

The Nougat update gave a performance boost.
And staying up to date with firmware is always a good idea. Google is releasing monthly security updates now.

Latest MIUI version? - is Xiaomi.EU good?

Well, i recently bought this phone, already applied to unlock bootloader but i have to wait a week, so in the meantime i'm learning about roms based on xiaomi and custom roms...
My main concern is, i'm running MIUI Global 11.0.3 | Stable | 11.0.3(PCOIDXM) with security patch from 2020-01-01. I saw other guys with newers MIUI versions than mine, so i found about Xiaomi.EU, i read it is the best MIUI rom but i would like to get some recommendations...
Also, my main objective is to get an stable rom with good battery usage, having root and maybe install xposed with magisk but this last is not that important.
I 'm also confused about if when i charge Xiaomi EU to my phone will it keep receiving OTA? or what should i do in case i want to go back and be able to receive OTA?
Las question is, i found this site https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/20-3-19.54975/ and the last version is xiaomi.eu_multi_HMNote8_20.3.19_v11-9.zip, is it compatible with all variants of Xiaomi RN8?, i found that there are 2 RN8 versions, a Global Version and an Indonesian version, comparing MIUI version i think i have and indonesian version, does the variant is important in case i want to use xiaomi eu?
Ohh, i see a did a lot of question but i post this in the hope that you guys can help this newbie to tweak his RN8

Actually RN8 has not 2 but 4 versions; Global, Chinese, Indonesian and Indian.
You can use it on any RN8 unlocked version no matter regions, it's set to global.
Since years I'm using Xiaomi.eu ROMs and over other MIUI based ROMs it's way better, great battery performance.
This ROM ever has the latest security patch updates cause is built over the Chinese version.
And regarding OTA updates; Xiaomi.eu ROMs have weekly updates.
What about the Dialer and Messaging apps? Is it the stock MIUI one or the Google ones?

honestly it doesn't have the latest security patch versions....they use old ones and advertise newest....latest beta version for example use security patches from September and they change it in build.prop so that in phone settings it says latest march/april whatever security patch...following are the two lines :
Code:
ro.build.version.security_patch=
ro.build.version.security_patch_real=

I didn't mind that they do that, I would expect from other non reliable site to do such bad practice, many people trust in their. I didn't check from the other ROMs that are based on their too, eg., Mi Globe, etc. Let me ask you how do you know or you have some source regarding to share with us?

I know because I'm using EU beta myself..so my source which is me..is never wrong..I don't trust other websites etc too...other miui roms like miui mix, minovo,mi room etc are all built on EU so they have the same thing..old security patch..advertised as new one.

Apart from the weekly securtiy patches, is it any better than the indian rom (11.0.3) for the note 8?
Secondly, is the Indian version really behind in software updates from the global version (in terms of changes and security patches) or is it just the numbering of the versions different?

Well like I mentioned in my previous replies, you won't get any weekly patches or monthly patches for that matter...EU uses september security patch and changes build.prop so that it appears latest in phone settings...among other things it is better than stock rom (indian, global, etc etc) as it's debloated, optimized, deodexed and tweaked a lil bit..also it has all features included in china roms every week so that is cool...it also has all ads removed...although I debloat more..sure you can debloat and do everything else on your indian rom too but you have to wait for stable builds for long and you gotta repeat the debloating all over again everytime you update...
regarding difference between indian and global...mainly it is the miui apps on indian rom and google apps on global..also a bit of themes and stuff on indian and wifi calling on global...rest it's all same....don't go on the numbering of versions too much...it's all the same with a bit of this and that difference like I said.

Can confirm this ROM is better than the stock. But don't build it with magisk, it bootlooped for me, just flash it after. The beta seems to have new features to, such as when installing apps, you get options to clear cache or delete the APK file if it's sideloaded. You also need orangefox recovery, didn't work with twrp when I tried.

Open beta general help

Hi. So I'm a new op7t owner and came from the op5, I'm familiar with stable and open beta versions on the op5 but this is not the same on the op7t. I have attached my info screen which is the version the phone came with so it may help to answer my questions,
When I try to install the open beta 2 from the official op pages it's saying the open beta 2 is a downgrade so I can't do this... however there is no ob3 or ob4 for me to install on the official web !!
Ob2 is the only version download available and also the stable version on the official op is an older version too to what I have now.
How am I supposed to switch over to the beta when it's only showing ob2 and Where are the ob3/4 versions ?
Very confusing compared to how easy switching from beta to stable and vice versa was on the one plus 5 !
Any help is appreciated ?
Regards

Thanks for responding, is this an official updater from OnePlus ? Excuse my ignorance but why would this be any better than the official oneplus software update pages ?
Thanks
The issue is that you have an EU handset likely with EU firmware if you haven't messed around with it yet.
For whatever reason EU updates are pulled back and regularly get behind the global and Indian versions.
I have absolutely no idea of whether there are issues introduced by flashing global firmware but I have had to do so today in order to get to beta 4.
So you have to download Oxygen Updater, go to advanced settings and change your phone to Oneplus 7t (not EU - this will switch to global), switch download option to full beta, download it and flash it as a local update.
There is absolutely no documentation or answers from OnePlus regarding the differences between firmware versions from what I can see.. only speculation from those whom have delved into the update packages and users whom have noticed subtle differences.
Long story short, if you want to try the betas you're better off switching to global at the moment.

I don't know why they don't update their website. I guess the easiest way is the updater app.
Thanks for the replies, very helpful. I just can't understand how I'm on a higher version that is actually listed in the UK official support upgrades pages !
Because the website for whatever reason hasn't been updated.
The latest stable EU release on the website seems to be 10.0.7, where in fact your device should have done an ota update to 10.0.9 out of the box. You also can't install Beta 2 that's listed on the site as it's older than 10.0.9
As suggested, Oxygen Updater is the best way to see what updates are actually available and the global firmware is the only one that seems to be updated regularly atm.
It's not an official OnePlus tool but the firmware is referenced and downloaded from OnePlus servers.

The Beta was available for a short time for EU and Global, and then it was pulled for both and put back up but not for EU (according to my Oxygen Updater)
https://www.xda-developers.com/onep...14-4-ambient-display-clocks-may-2020-patches/ (See update #1)
I just double checked and even through Oxygen Updater (with Advanced Mode turned on), device set to OnePlus 7T (EU), Open Beta (Full), Only Oxygen OS Open Beta 2 is available (I'm currently back on 10.0.9 EU as I didn't want to be on Global not knowing what the differences are)
Moral of the story is though that there's either inconsistencies across devices, or you received the update before it was pulled, or OnePlus are just utterly useless at update cycles... I believe the latter lol.

Question [Poco F3][MIU13] Why no custom ROMs are using the latest firmware from MIUI ?

Hi, I've seen most ROMs recommend firmware from MIUI 12.5.x and not the latest is there any reason for that ? Does the latest firmware could break something ? Or lead to weird bugs/new bugs ?
A11 miui based roms have hit their end of life for the most part (12.5.19) almost all the bugs have been worked out and is very stable. Imo, as well as many others, the A12 based miui roms are sometimes if not always missing import features such as face unlock (at the time of writing this). The A12 based roms, imo, are not the most stable roms for the poco f3 atm (I've tried both, and ended up sticking to 12.5.19 xiaomi EU stable)

Oh interesting so we're kind of a lab test for the new firmware in EEA, I thought China would have been the test case first and then they would deploy it to others ROMs (Indian, EEA, Global, etc.) once it is stable enough
