[Q] Android Auto makes phone lag hard - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Since the last few AA updates have made Unlocking the phone easier for passengers, and drivers, I have noticed that my phone is damned near unusable in this state. This lagfest lasts for ~30-60 seconds after disconnecting the phone cable as well. Everything is fine in terms of Nav or Google Play Music streaming on the head unit, but trying to swipe notifications or scroll through Facebook/Twitter/Instagram is a hard no go. Anyone else experiencing this?
I have a stock, un-rooted Pixel 2 XL running Android 8.1 and the March patch level. Android Auto v3.1 connected to a 2018 Acura TLX with the Technology Package.

haven't encountered any such issues with my Pixel 2 XL on AA.. I am on March update

Android Auto, is it working for you?

Got my phone today and installed the android auto app, enabled all the permissions, etc. When I plug it into my truck, the android auto tab shows up at the bottom for a brief moment, then goes away. I didn't have any issues like this with my OG XL(which also had 8.0 on it) or my OP3. I tried doing some troubleshooting by reinstalling the app, removing my phone from know android auto devices and enabling USB debugging. Nothing so far has worked. Anyone else having issues? Car is a '16 F-150. Thanks.
ETA: Well, got it working! Went into the app itself and it's settings. Under connected cars, SYNC was listed as "rejected". I cleared all cars and re-added mine. Now it's working great lol!
Pixel 2 XL connects very slowly with Android auto
Tried to setup Android auto head unit with the Pixel 2 XL after switching from Pixel XL with normal function. The Pixel 2 XL takes way longer than expected to connect with Android auto on the head unit but, it does work. However, I had to reinstalled the Android auto app several times to even get a usable configuration. I called Google support but, they had no answer about the problem as of Oct. 27, 2017.
Android auto 2016 VW Tiguan
I was having troubles getting my VW's system to recognize the phone. I kept getting USB device not supported. That is until I went into my cars android auto
menu and manually selected my Pixel 2 XL. After doing that, Android auto connects automatically when I plug it in.
Seems to connect about as fast as my OG Pixel (7.1.2 & 8.0), and op3t.
no issues setting up or connecting for me.
only issue I have is no ringing on incoming phone calls, I get notification and all, just no sound.
had this issue intermittently on original pixel xl also.
Negative.
Using a Sony XAV-AX100, works for maybe a minute sometimes at first. Then cuts in and out rapidly. Then other times it won't even recognize it.
I'm having issues as well. I have a 2017 GTI and mines connect similar as the pixel XL, the issue is that the Pixel 2 XL disconnect and reconnect often times and that's very annoying. Probably every 5-10 minutes. I have cleared cache and data from the app and reset the phone and still with the issue. It happens with 8.0 and 8.1
BTW I'm using the USB cable came with Nexus 6p. Have been using the same one since.
hmmmm 2 VW owners with this issue. No other vehicle manufacturer's mentioned. Looks like it's related to the emissions cheating if you ask me.
Just kidding. I really hope they get this figured out - I currently don't have android auto in my 2016 - it will be in my car I get next July.

I'm having the same issue. I have a 2015 Kia Optima and Android Auto worked flawlessly with my Nexus 6p. On the Pixel 2 XL, it disconnects every 5-10 minutes. Tried all the same troubleshooting steps with no resolution.

Exact same problem with xav ax100.
No problems with OG XL on 8.0
I think this thread makes it pretty clear this is a pixel 2 XL issue
It works perfectly in my 2017 Honda Accord. I upgraded yesterday to 8.1 and it still works great. And I have the 2 xl. It even allows me to use "hey google" in the car. Love android auto

Me too, with new 2017 Pilot, use maps, use ok google, send texts all without touching phone, love it.
Works like a champ on my Chevy where I used to have some issues with the onePlus 3t
First day it kept closing every 10 mins. Now it works perfectly. Not sure what changed. 2017 Ford fusion
Earlier this year I had trouble with AA stopping/disconnecting. I had a Pixel XL and a new crv. I read in a crv forum that Google Maps beta caused problems for some. I was on the beta. I deleted the app and got off the beta channel, then reinstalled everything. It worked well after that. That was 6 months ago, not sure if it applies any more but if you are on the beta channel & having issues I'd try changing. My son has a new GTI and also had trouble with AA. He was on Maps beta also and going stable helped him. You need to delete the app and its data then reinstall.
im having issues with it working then 2 -3 mins later i get error 12 and AA crashes :/ anyone else getting this

Fwiw. My fix was manually selecting my 2XL in my 2016 VW Tiguan's AA car's menu, after I did that it connects automatically every time I plug it in.
I 'Forgot' my Sony XAV-AX100 and reconnected and went on a 35 minute drive with no issues (see my previous post about my issues).
Time will tell.

I have the same Sony but I have no sound when navigating using Google Maps, It's the same for my OnePlus 3T as well ifI use the XAV-AX100. You can tell the navigation is running because it pauses the podcasts. Waze is working though.

Android 8.1 upgrade: screen freezing in camera app on device rotation?

Hi, All -- I've got two Pixel 2 XLs: one on Android 8.0.0 and one on the final released version of Android 8.1.0. On the Android 8.1 phone, when using the camera app, the screen will freeze briefly when the phone is rotated (portrait/landscape). But this doesn't happen on the phone that's still back on 8.0. Are other people seeing this change with the Android 8.1 upgrade? Or might something else be causing this issue on my Android 8.1 Pixel 2 XL? Thanks!
Just tried this out and yes I'm getting the same on 8.1
I've just did what you say and no, it doesn't happen at all on my Pixel 2 XL upgraded to Oreo 8.1.
Did you try factory reset?
interesting! Yeah, a factory reset seems to have fixed this issue on my Android 8.1 device. Fingers crossed that this'll stay smooth.
OK, I think I sorted this out. It's Meteor Swipe that causes the problem. It must be something related to its screen overlay function that, on the Pixel 2 XL running Android 8.1 (though not 8.0), causes the camera to stutter when the screen is rotated. The issue goes away when I add the camera app to Meteor Swipe's blacklist. I wonder if other apps that require accessibility access might cause this problem in the camera app.
Not seeing this behavior between my two 2XLs. Was in beta program with the first. Can't seem to get the second one to update to 8.1.

Same problem here. I have also a 2xl. I don't know if the problems is just with phone or any other android device

Android Auto and Pandora crashing

Ever since I believe around the 3rd Android 9 beta update, pandora kept crashing on my Android Auto. I was hoping the full "street" version of 9 released yesterday would resolve this but it didnt. I also noticed the screen on my car blacking out at times and then coming back on during android auto. The problem is I can go a song or two on pandora and then it stops and says pandora inaccessible on the screen and then a new song starts playing. Sometimes, it will cut off 3 songs in a row within the first minute of each song. Its really frustrating and I cant tell if its a pandora thing or android auto thing. Used to think it was a beta thing but thats clearly not it anymore.
I do keep my phone in my cupholder area and was wondering if when the proximity or light sensor gets changed in there, would that affect anything? It didnt before, Im just wondering if theres any new settings that could be making that change.
My original pixel xl did that on the betas but I replaced that phone with a pixel 2 xl over the weekend and I haven't noticed it happening with the new phone.

I even tried turning off battery management in the app and lowering the audio quality like I read in a couple other places but neither worked. Its still crapping out and then starting a new song.
Just saw an update from AA so hopefully that works. Ill report back.

Question Pixel 6 Random Freezes & Rebooting

I am facing random freezing and reeboting issue with my pixel 6. It happens more than 7/8 times a day. Very annoying and Google is not responding to this issue. There are many similar complains like this in Google forum and there is no proper reply from Google. December update didn't fix the issue. Is it hardware issue or software? Help please.
Tried a factory reset? Are you rooted? Are you able to unlock the bootloader? If so, try flashing the full firmware image or Official Google Android Flash Tool.
If none of that helps, I'd exchange it with Google for a new replacement. Good luck!

My one freezes randomly and not specifically for any reason or for any apps.
Do you have the december update installed? Try to disable all your Accessibility Services from the settings.
[Update: A fix is coming] Google Pixel 6 owners are facing an annoying screen freezing issue
If you own a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro and are affected by the screen freezing bug, there’s a temporary workaround to resolve the issue.

Random rebooting seems to be a "common" Pixel 6 problem. Most were only able to fix it by getting a new device from Google, some were able to fix it with a factory reset.
Strangely enough, I had the same problems on my first Pixel 6 - then I got a replacement model, got the backup from my old phone (p4 xl) going (again) and never had any reboot problems. Then a couple days ago I rooted my Pixel 3 and transfered my files over from my main Pixel 6 Pro and got the same reboot problem on my Pixel 3 now (~about every 10 minutes of active usage). I found out that it's probably connected to the fingerprint scanner, since about every third time that I use the FP on my P3, the phone reboots. I'll probably try a factory reset on my P3, since I know that the phone worked without issue before. It was probably an unwise idea to get a backup from my P6 going, but then again, F*** Google for not giving us a decent file transfer system. If the only way to get a functioning product is to get a replacement or start with a clean slate, that's a joke in 2021.
That tells me that it's a software issue, but since it's hard to pinpoint/replicate and at least with some P6 Pro users even a factory reset was not able to help, you might have to get a replacement model.

Even vibration?
I wondered that as well. I also turn off animations. The phone switches screens faster and the fingerprint scanner works better sans animations.
May be a coincidence but.....
I have never had this problem until today.
I usually have animations off. Set them to 0.5 today and my phone froze twice.
I've turned animations off again.
(I also have accessibility services off and have not changed that)
