Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a Pixel and I'm wondering if it's possible to unlock the bootloader and root an international model. I want to be able to do these things so just looking to verify that they're possible before I buy an international model. Anyone done it? Haven't had any luck when searching. Thanks for any help.

Google store is BL unlockable, Verizon is not since they're annoying like that
Thanks, I'm definitely staying away from the Verizon ones for that reason but what I'm asking about is the international model. It's a different model number and has different bands but I'm wondering if it's still BL unlockable like the Google Play version.
Yes, I'm running the international model unlocked and rooted.
Tbh I think the international and Google edition are the same. Been searching for a while, can't find anything to indicate they aren't.
It seems in the USA, to differentiate between carrier locked and unlocked phones sold directly by Google, as well as marketing and branding purposes, Google simply calls the unlocked edition in the USA Google edition instead. The international edition already ships unlocked.
They're the same otherwise for all intents and purposes.

Hi Guys,
First of all apologies if the title of this thread is somewhat vague. I don't really know what title I should use. I've been using a Nexus GSM unlocked version and my brother asked me to help him buy a Nexus as well. Here in our country, you can only buy a Nexus through our carrier providers and of course in a grey market. I was able to buy mine on the grey market and we also bought his there (different shop). However, the one we bought him was originally locked to a carrier. The shop just unlocked it (making it carrier independent). Moving on, here's my question: is it okay to flash a custom ROM to my brother's Nexus? Will his Nexus be locked again to that specific carrier if I installed a custom ROM? To be honest, I don't really know how they unlock a phone to be carrier independent. Here's hoping someone could help me out and very big thank you in advance. :good:
One more thing, i found this thread and I'm also wondering if the thread below also applies to Nexus.

I just wonder how many model for United States, it effects me
From what I understand, if there is only one model for U.S. then I would buy the Tmobile version, unlock and use it on Verizon. Im positive it will work cause I did the same for Nexus 6 and iPhone 6. Buying a Tmobile version cause I thought it comes with unlocked bootloader or at least, it's easier than Verizon
Hello just had a quick question. Considering buying this phone due to the insane battery life and wanted to know which version I should buy if I wanted to install custom ROMs. Would the Moto z play droid version from verizon allow me to install ROMs? I'm guessing no because its Verizon, and their phones are usually locked (boot loader wise) but just wanting to make sure. Or would I need the international gsm version?

There are 3 versions of the Z Play, all with the initial ID prefix of XT1635:
-01- Verizon, locked Bootloader
-02- International/GSM, BL unlock capable
-03- Chinese, BL unlock capable but set as RETCN and lacking many US bands.
I almost purchased an XT1635-03 off of Gearbest/Banggood because it was only $250 USD, but turns out while it can be used with custom ROMs it's missing quite a few crucial network bands for use in the US.
Just waiting for the X4 release/fall sales and will probably snag a Z Play for cheap.

Thank you!
Hello someone is offering me pixel 2 xl but USA model and I'm in the UK. Is there any differences in the 2 regional models?
Do both have the same bands
Quality processors etc
Please advise as I'm considering buying it.

Same phone, but make SURE it is not the US Verizon (bastard) version that is similar to the UK's EE model. They come locked and restricted. Get the phone's IMEI in advance and run it through THIS. If it comes back GOOGLE_OPEN, you are good to go. If you run the IMEI and get either Verizon -or- Blacklisted you will want to decline. Cheers mate.

Very useful.
I've been informed it's unlocked but will try your link.
Hi. Today I decided to go on eBay and buy a Note 10 Plus (here in the UK). I cannot live without root, and reading through some threads I've learned that only some variants can be rooted. I don't seem to be able to find a definite answer on existing threads, and I just want to make sure I buy the right one. Which one should I buy? Thank you.
anyone, please?
A few answers for you.
I've seen (not 1st hand) that folks here on xda with US variants have been able to use a online pay service to get their bootloaders unlocked. This may or may not apply to the UK variants.
I'm in US but went the route of purchasing the SM-N9750/DS to have root as that service didn't exist on launch of the Note 10+.
You'd want to check to see which Bands your carrier uses with which the 9750 supports and decide from there.

It appears the Unlock method is only for US variants......you could probably message them and see if UK works with their unlock service
You know what, on second thought (unless it has changed), i thought UK variants were all unlockable......
Maybe that changed....I'm not sure
Thanks for your answers. I've been reading some more and it seems that Exynos ones are easy to unlock and the Snapdragon ones you have to use those online paid methods. Is this correct? Which variant one has more ROM development? Exynos I suppose?
Yes Exynos has way more development. (Virtually none for the Snapdragon), and yup, US and Canadian Snapdragons are locked bootloaders....while the Brazilian, Chinese and a few more international Snapdragons are unlockable like the Exynos. From my limited understanding, the Exynos variants don't perform on par with the Snapdragons...so that's something else to consider.
