Howdy Everyone,
I'm a huge novice when it comes to playing around with android phones so please go easy on me. :cyclops:
Ok so had this phone about a month and it had a Google play error a few times. A quick reset and all was OK, until the last time where it ended up in a boot loop. :crying:
Numerous Web searches later I decided to use Xperia Companion to repair my phone. I had my phone back but my data was gone!
I'd hoped it would be relatively easy to get the data back or at least some of it, but no as it was then I realised that I would have to root my phone to even try.
Then I find out that if I unlock the bootloader that I would need to roll back to MM so that I could backup the TA Partion to save my DRM Keys.....
Ultimately I want to recover my photos (or at least attempt) and then return my phone to an unrooted state with my DRM keys back where they should be. :fingers-crossed:
So my question to the community is, can I use Xerpia Companion to make a backup of my phone at its factory state (pretty much as it is now), root the phone, attempt the recovery and the be able to return my phone to the state its currently in.. Including the TA partition?
Cheers in advance for any and all help.... :victory:

I don't have this device and there's a limited amount of threads regarding this topic but, the following thread is probably your best bet. Don't be afraid to ask for some member guidance within it too.

Hey guys,
I'm interested in rooting just so I can get tethering working and be able to delete some useless apps but I don't want to get rid of my factory Rom. What can I do? I also have not done the HTC SD update but I want to cause I don't want to spend for a new working SD card.

waiting patiently for the answer to this...
rooting doesn't give you a different rom. a different rom gives you a different rom.

Several users have reported that even after applying the OTA update, they were able to successfully root using toast's method. At the moment, I plan to apply the update and then root when I get my EVO on Monday. Unless something changes before then, it's as good as done.
Alright good stuff. Thx for replies. Do you guys know if that one step root sticks to phone even after boot?
It sticks but your not able to flash roms or do nandroid backups or anything. Your much better off using toasts method.
First thanks to all the gurus here at this amazing website were technology is constantly being challenge and and with good results. I take my hat off to you
I just wanted to bring an issue I am having and hope it can be resolve if not it will be a learning experience, but I know that with so many great people in this website I have no doubt that my issue could be resolve and if not I will continue to try to resolve the problem, I love challenges in the electronic world. I have been in it for the last 27 years.
My situation is the following:
I was able to root my phone, but have 2 questions;
1) Why when I look under superuser I have nothing in my screen?
2) Why I can't have access to my sdcard through HTC Synch even know I have update to the new firmware?
I have try this in different ways, updating to the factory software and then rooting as well as rooting first and then try to update which after thinking about it I think it was stupid of me.
I am sorry about my extended post, but I just wanted to thank you guys for your continous support to all of the cell phone community.
Again thankyou and continue the good work

Apologies if this has been covered before- searched a couple of times with no joy...
Waiting for delivery of my Defy and still not sure what mods to do...Having read about a lot of UK models having the dreaded ear-piece fault, I'm just wondering:
1. what I can do that can be undone if my phone develops this fault?
i.e. Is it possible to root the phone, remove some of the Motoblur bloatware, overclock and scale, and still be able to return it to it's original state if the earpiece goes? (or at least make any mods undetectable!)
2. From what I've read it is possible to skip the Motoblur registration. Would I still be able to use the phone portal- what apps require the Motoblur registration?
Basically I'd love to tweak the phone but am paranoid about voiding the waranty!
Thanks in advance!
Once you are rooted and have recovery installed backup your system before doing anything else. If something happens restore the backup and unroot. Only problem might be if you have some type of hardware issue and can no longer boot the phone.
There is always risk, but that will help.

Thanks. Is it the case that you can mod the phone any way you like as long as you backup, restore and unroot before returning the phone for any possible warranty claim? Would a Mototola tech be able to tell that the phone had been modded and then reset to it's original state? Just wondering if I'd be better to wait a couple of months for any possible fault to appear...Thanks again.

If that's your primary concern, tweaking isn't really an option.
As soon as you start fiddling with the software, you technically void your warranty.
That said, most fiddling can be undone and if the phone were to end up in a state that you couldn't boot it to fix your fiddling, there's a fairly good chance that the engineers wouldn't be able to boot it to discover what you've done.
Not to mention, from past personal experience, a lot of front-line engineers that actually deal with faulty handsets that are sent away for repair don't really care or may not be bright enough to be able to tell that you've messed with your phone.
Thanks. Think I'll go ahead and mod it. Been reading the relevent posts/stickies and from what I can see as long as I'm carefull and follow the various steps closely and in order, I'll be unlucky to brick it. Think I'd get pissed off waiting several months for any fault to show- just wary of the earpiece going and then being told I'm screwed coz I've played with the software! Thanks again.
Hello XDA,
My G3 got into a bootloop and I finally resorted to flashing stock ROM in order to get the phone back again. My internal memory has been wiped. Is there any way I could recover the data without complicated procedures? I saw one on XDA, and it is too complicated for my level of tech understanding. I would sell my soul if I could, to recover the data.
A million thanks.
Hi all,
I have a zenfone 2 that I have just rooted....so now what?
Basically I wanted to optimise my phone so I am able to disable annoying notifications which are greyed out (although since rooting and checking this it still greyed out) I want to remove bloatware and I would actually like to customise my own android system, starting from a 'vanilla' base where I can build it up myself.
I have also read that I need to install a android recovery programme on asap after rooting.
So sorry about this but I really do need 'stupid' instructions as using hi tech words will just baffle me. lol
I have played around with computers in the past and learned about them so this is the phone stage now!
Thanks in advance and for your patience with this newbie!

Hi Kerry,
First thing you should now do after rooting your device would be flashing a custom recovery that is specific to your device (make sure your devices boot loader is unlocked first). This will allow you to make a backup of everything just in case anything were to go wrong, flash custom ROMs and useful zips. You can pick your favorite custom recovery such as Team Win Recovery Projects custom recovery (TWRP), Clock Work Mods custom recovery (CWM) or Philz Touch recovery based off of CWM although personally I would recommended twrp.
There are multiple ways to do this: Using the TWRP/CWM recovery installer from the play store or the more complicated way of flashing it from your computer. If you were to choose to install TWRP from their app on the play store (grant it root permission) you can select your device from the supported device section within the app, pick the latest recovery, hit the install button and let the app work its magic. If all works correctly you can now reboot to recovery and you will see TWRP is installed. Now you should create a backup to be on the safe side and you're good to go!
To best optimize your device I would recommend installing a custom ROM (look up custom ROMs for the Zenfone 2) and install the zip through recovery. (make sure to pick the right ROM for your device and version otherwise you may soft brick your smartphone) Now with a custom ROM you can better optimize your device and fully customize it to your liking. Make sure to look up custom ROM installation instructions for your device for better detail.
As far as removing system apps/bloatware you can use a "root app delete" tool from the play store but be careful what you remove as some applications are required!
Make sure to take your time and be careful when attempting any of these things and be careful what you modify! Just remember that no question is a stupid question as we all have to start somewhere!
Hope I was able to help you even if it was just a little, good look and have fun!
Rooted Droid Thanks you so much!!! First of all thanks for being so patient with me and secondly thanks for the useful (and easy to read) information.
I will go and install a back up on my phone from the ones you have suggested.
Hopefully you will be around over the next few days if I have more questions. Not planning on doing this all at once but rather taking the time and doing it right.
Thanks so much again!! :good::good::good:

Not a problem! I'm always happy to spread some knowledge and appreciate when people do the same to me! I also went ahead and checked the TWRP app and the Zenfone 2 is supported so it looks like your good to go. And yes absolutely, there's no rush so take all the time you may need and everything will go smoothly! I'm always around and will try my best to answer questions.

Check this site out:
http://myzen.asus.com/2015/10/13/official-bootloader-unlock-for-zenfone-2-is-now-available/
All devices have a different method for unlocking bootloader (some don't even have locked bootloaders) but this is an official bootloader unlocking method for the Zenfone 2 from Asus itself. I suggest following its directions and you should be able to unlock it this way.
Ok I followed the link but now I am confused. I have version ww_2.20.40.63_201......
Apparently I need a later version. What started off with just adding an APP means me doing other things before I even get to that point (hence the confusion! lol)
I never updated the phone via OTA as I was told it would invalidate my warranty and also I have killed a phone before using that so can you walk me through please...if you have the time....or could I just check if I have it unlocked already??
I haven't even gotten to the part where I create a backup...tee hee

Hi sorry for the late reply, I'm in Canada so it was 2am when I was last talking to you so I went to bed haha. Anyway as far as unlocking the Zenfone 2's bootloader I wouldn't have experience unfortunately as I'm using a Nexus 5. The easiest way to go about this now would be to go to your device specific forum and find a way to unlock it there.
The following way to unlock the bootloader requires you have ADB installed on your PC. This is a guide for installation on Windows :
http://www.android.gs/install-android-sdk-adb-windows/
And here is a thread specific to unlocking the Zenfone 2 using adb:
http://www.xda-developers.com/asus-zenfone-2-bootloader-unlocked-without-asus/
BTW as you mentioned "updating may invalidate your warranty" things like rooting, installing a custom OS, unlocking the bootloader, installing a custom recovery and other things like that all (in most cases) void your warranty.
Sorry I can't personally help with the bootloader as I've not personally unlocked it on a Zenfone. Still feel free to ask any questions if you need to. Good luck!
Good morning(ish) XDA,
So I had a quick question I wanted to run past you guys. You see, I have my good old Pixel 2 XL here, but my Girlfriend was kind enough to get me an early gift and got me a new phone. So I was going to give my Pixel 2 XL to my Little Brother. The Bootloader is Unlocked, It's Rooted, It has Xposed, and it has a Custom Recovery. It's been a long time since I've done any modifications to my phone, so I am a little rusty lol I was wondering if there was a simple way to Return my Phone to Factory Settings?
I'm sure you guys get noob questions like this all the time, and I apologize if anyone feels like I am wasting time, but I really would appreciate any and all help you guys have to offer.
Thank you for your time!

Follow the instructions under "flashing factory images" and you should be back to stock!
I'd say just do a full factory image flash to the phone.
You'll need to enter your Google account info to unlock the phone after a factory restore so that it can be used again though.
After flashing the stock full factory images, also consider locking (and "critical" locking for that matter) the bootloader as well; unless you want your brother to mess around rooting and flashing ROMs...
note: locking will erase everything on the phone and return it to stock...
