Hi, i've just moved to san francisco recently and i wanna get a new phone with contract. I know nexus is the best right now but which model should i choose? And i wont be buying an unlocked gsm gnex.
Will thank every post with useful opinions!
Thanks
I believe it was Tech TV, but when the iPhone 4 first came out for Verizon, they did a side-by-side comparison of the AT&T model & the Verizon model in San Francisco. They went to various locations around San Francisco testing signal strength, web page load times, uploads/downloads, etc and I recall that all but 1 of the tests came out as Verizon being the winner.
As far as the Galaxy Nexus goes, obviously, you can acquire it for either service. The plus with Verizon is you get 32GB rather then 16GB, although the battery drain is faster(with LTE on) and I believe Verizon's plans are still the most expensive also. Personally, I'm only on Verizon because I've got the no-longer-offered 'unlimited data' otherwise I'd say bye and go to AT&T or T-Mobile. I kinda miss having a GSM phone due to the ease in phone swapping + worldwide functionality(switching to other providers).

Confused ... You are saying you won't be buying an unlocked gsm nexus and asking whether att or Verizon? Currently the nexus is available only on Verizon. If you want att, you have to buy the unlocked gsm gnex and you have no other option.

Ill wait till it comes to atnt... Anyone can answer my question above?
Oh 1 more thing i love developing my phone (rooting, flashing n etc,) so which one should be best? I really in need a response. Ill thank every useful posts
National coverage and network: Verizon is the best. I'm happy with AT&T since it has decent coverage in major metros and I can tolerate a dropped call here and there. So if your job depend on phone calls and need network everywhere you go, Verizon is better.
International usage: ATT since you can easily swap sim cards. Some Verizon phones are world phones but I believe nexus is not.
Data speeds: nexus is lte on Verizon so it has faster data speeds compared to gsm model. Generally Verizon lte has much better coverage than att. Att just got started on lte. But att hspa speeds are more than enough. I easily get anywhere between 3 - 5 Mbps average speeds on att which is more than enough for me.
Phone choices: I love the fact that I can import unlocked phones and just pop a sim to get it working on att. But if you only buy contract phones then both network has good phone options.
Also on modding with nexus no issues, otherwise both network force manufacturers to lock bootloader. But nowadays it has gotten better with manufacturers providing option to unlock bootloaders after the device is released in a few weeks.

Thanks for the lengthy response i wanna get the at&t coz its cheaper. Also i dont often call or need an internet that fast that but i think i need to wait 2 more months to have it with contract. About the modding, is one faster than the other?
I am thinking of getting the verizon right now. Anymore inputs?
verizon has double data right now so I would jump on it quick

An entire forum of developers and not one comment about ATT in SF? Amazing!!
TO the OP, other than the above comment regarding National Coverage (verizon is better), which is true, let me speak specifically to SF:
DO NOT get ATT! The network is embarrassing bad in SF, and while I have been outside of SF for about a year now, I am sure others can speak to this. TO be fair, when I left they were investing a few million to patch it up but I am not sure where that was left. I had to move to Verizon for this simple reason alone. There was a reason it was so bad. All the Iphone users during commute hours and the network was not up to par. Lots of anger....
Verizon was great once i switched.

I was surprised as well and yes you are right AT&T service is terrible in San Francisco.
I had AT&T since the first iPhone and just recently switched. AT&T was great at home and where I work but was simply infuriating when I would be in the city.
There are still some low speed areas on Verizon in SF but I have had much better luck.
Cnet covered this and did a video on it

Hi guys,
I might be ditching vzw for at&t and want to use my vzw note 2 on cm11 for a few months before I buy another phone. I am still undecided since im on an unlimited plan, but Im tired of seeing phones I want never get to vzw (nexus to mention one). Honestly also I really am that happy with my note 2 as well and the new stuff isnt appealing enough to drop $700 on.
I see all I need to do is change apn settings but what I cant seem to find is how fast will data speeds actually be (i know area matters) and if I will be able to take full advantage of what is comparable on at&t to vzw's 4g lte. All I know is one resource said I would get an H in the signal area but dont know what that means for data speeds. I can probably live with 8-10Mbps for a few months since I dont watch a ton of youtube on the go, 80% of data use is for music streaming and web browsing.
Thanks for any input.
Does the Verizon note 2 have a gsm modem? I thought they used CDMA .

Its a world phone still, from what I have seen it gets every band at&t uses except their 4g. I have seen vzw note 2 results on t-mobile still getting 15Mbps without t-mobile 4g but curious if at&t would be the same, if so I would be ready to ditch vzw.
Decided to leave T-Mobile after 14 long and lately excruciating years... So, I go to Best Buy last night, signed up with Verizon, got me and the wife two brand new Galaxy Note 4 phones. LOVE the phones, but for some reason, and according to Verizon it is an "odd problem", we have NO MOBILE DATA!!!!
Will not even work, when it does it is stuck on 3G and the speedtest.net says 0.22mpbs download... I mean, wtf is in this thing a 9600 baud modem? :cyclops: But seriously, anyone else have this happen?
No problem with mobile data here. In fact I get 4g reception in fringe areas I normally didn't get in on my note 3. Since you just bought those devices I'd exchange them both and get new Sim cards, that's definitely not normal or acceptable. Oh and it's a shot in the dark but pull down the toggles and make sure sync and mobile data is on.
I have a note 4 and was on tmobile just before I jumped to Verizon. I am not impressed so far considering the cost vs others. I rarely get more than 2 bars and I am in NYC. It's surprisingly bad for signal quality considering we are in 2014 and I have a new flagship device on the supposedly best network in the country.
might just be your area, when i travel i get 60-70 mps 4g lte but at home i get spotty 3g
Well, since the Force is out and the DT2 seems to completely lack dev support and rooting method, I am very seriously considering dumping VZW for TMo. Picked up a prepaid sim from 7-11 to test out tonight.
I live just over the river from NYC in NJ and commute to Bryant Park area daily for work. Will be periodically posting my impressions here. Plan on swapping SIMs for a few day to put TMo thru the ringer before pulling the trigger on an X-Force
So far working completely, both Voice & LTE. Not sure if I am getting VoLTE or true GSM Voice service, as I do not know of a way to test. I have been sitting comfortably on Band 4 for LTE when outside with 4 full bars of service. Inside my apartment, 4g is spotty with TMo (I live in a garden level place, half underground half above in a brownstone), however without band 12 present in the phone, I dont expect blazing or strong 4g signal indoors.
I do however get strong HSPA+ inside which has been pretty fast through basic web browsing and small app downloads.
What has blown me away is the speed of the TMo network, both HSPA and LTE. I took the following speedtests (same spot, swapping sims & letting connection settle). While it is harder to get 4G LTE inside with TMo and no band 12, when I do get it, the speed still BLOWS away VZW
Pic 1 - Verizon Indoor (foyer) - 4G LTE
Pic 2 - T-Mo Indoor (foyer) - HSPA +
Pic 3 - Verizon Outside - 4G LTE
Pic 4 - T-Mo Outside - 4G LTE
Pic 5 - T-Mo Inside front foyer - 4G LTE (verizon speed was same as previous outside pic)
Pic 6 - Verizon Inside on Couch (middle of apt) - 4G LTE
Pic 7 - TMo Inside on Couch (middle of apt) - 4G LTE
Got it from VZW BF promotion, thanks for your post. It does work for AT&T and T-Mobile, not sure for Sprint.

Have been seeing similar results today while at work in nyc. My desk gets full 4-5 bars of 4g service with TMo. I am on the 8th floor of a brick building. Def thought reception would suck at my desk.
Ive had the same results today at my desk regarding speed tests.
So you had to do no unlocking,it worked out of the box?

yep, 100% minus band 12. Not sure if band 12 can be unlocked. but has been working pretty sweet out of the box. simple sim swap
You guys think this would soon work with Google fi, now that would be nice . thanks for the info guys nice to know since I am limited to 18GB...

It'll work on GSM carriers (T-Mobile, AT&T, US Cellular, etc.) but not Sprint since it's a CDMA network. Phones with CDMA radios are allowed onto a CDMA network via a code, and Sprint blocks codes from Verizon phones, and vice versa.

That's because iPhones and Nexuses are unlocked phones by default. The Turbo 2 is a Verizon exclusive that happens to be SIM unlocked, so Sprint isn't going to accept it.

It should work on the T-mo portion of Fi, with no switching to Sprint, obviously. Also no wi-fi calling afaik.
Where do you live? I have yet to see less then 60Mbs on Verizon. Hell I hit over 100 pretty often and stay around 75-80 for the most part.

That is some great speed!!! No I was talking about my data cap of 18gb. I was thinking of getting a side prepaid sim for the extra data.
Please tell me how you did it
how did you get the turbo 2 to work on tmobile?
im in nyc and have turbo 2 on vzw and had an extra one as backup. a buddy in tampa florida using a galaxy s6 regular on tmo kept having issues with his fone. i sent him my backup which is exactly the same im using. he put his sim into the turbo without any problems and works fine. he gets no dropped calls for whatever reason. he thought he would miss his wifi calling but since the fone is better at reception all around he doesnt need the wifi calling and of course he has unlimited data using his Tmo sim and its on LTE . only thing he said he has missed is the turbo 2 doesnt have infrared for his samsuck tv and other controls he could have used via his galaxys infrared. hope this helps.

All Verizon LTE phones are network unlocked by order of the FCC ever since 2011, 2012. It was an "agreement" Verizon was forced to sign to get more LTE spectrum.

It's old news. As long as a Verizon phone has the necessary LTE bands, it will work on any other LTE carrier.
Droid Turbo 2 has LTE bands 2,3,4,7,13. T-Mobile uses LTE bands 2,4,12. So, he's getting LTE bands 2,4.

I'm assuming this means I could use my droid turbo 2 outside of the US and just swap in a local sim (and use LTE if those countries use 2,3,7 or 13)?

Yes. For countries without those bands you would rely upon HSPA or even GSM.
I'm using mine on Telstra in Australia with no issues. (Droid Turbo 2)

What LTE bands does your carrier use? Info i found says 1, 3, 7, 8, 28. Droid Turbo 2 had two of those (3, 7), plus HSPA of course.
I'm on at&t, I thought when during a phone call the service drops from lte to 4g? AT&T says my phone is connecting to 3g during a call. Is this normal?
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
LTE is 4G, so what you're seeing is normal. The confusion comes about because AT&T decided to market HSPA+, a 3G technology, as 4G here in the US. As a result, AT&T's devices have both 4G and 4G LTE on the indicator, with the device falling back to "4G" during a call. Google devices, Nexus and Pixel alike, use the international signal indicator since they are marketed for a (mostly) world-wide audience.
Mine falls back to H, while my S8+ falls back to H+. I find it odd the the Pixle didn't drop to H+ during a call.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
If I'm not mistaken, displaying H, H+, or both varies by carrier as well as device.
as far as i know if your operator doesnt support volte, the data drops to 3g while on call. if volte is supported and enabled, it wont drop to 3g.
Thanks for the explanation.

Mine doesn't, but only because Straight Talk doesn't have VOLTE on its network yet.

Really? Mine drops to H during calls. In in a prepay account, wonder if that makes a difference.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
You'd have to check with AT&T, but I do believe VOLTE isn't on their prepaid plans, so it would fall back to 3G. As I mentioned, Straight Talk does the same thing with the AT&T branch of their service.
