Galaxy S9 & S9+ Screen Clouding/Retention/Burn-in problem??? - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

I just noticed today that there's some clouding/image retention on my 4 days old Samsung Galaxy S9+!!
It's only visible under dark environment and only in the "Unlock" screen (when it dims the brightness). To replicate this, make sure you have a darkesh plain wallpaper with one of the security locks turned on (pin, pattern, iris, or face), swipe the screen to show the chosen unlock method. This is when you can spot the clouding/image retention/burn-in on the top status bar. This problem appears to correlate directly to the status icons (time, notifications and carrier name).
Another colleague of mine has a S9, and it has the same problem! The phone shown on the photo is actually his, but mine exhibits the exact same problem. See attached photos.
Does anyone else notice this?

I see it on mine too, but that's not the image retention or burn in. It's too early to get burn in only after using it for a few days. I think it's just the software try to blur the status bar icons. You can try display different thing on it and the blurry white cloud will display.

I see this on mine also, but raksan is correct: it is just software blurring to hide the icons.
Try this: play a YT video in 16:9 ratio. Don't expand it to the whole screen and leave the black bars. You'll see that there is no burn-in/image retention on those black bars.

You're welcome! Nice to see you!

They should probably just hide the icons instead of pseudo hiding them and freaking customers out though. I bet they'll get enough calls over time where they'll push a small update. Lol

This is on mine as well but not just the task bar but the navigation bar as well. Still just the software?

Nope, it's burned in which is bs. I switched the nav bar directions and the back and recent buttons are still showing where they were in the burn. If it were ghosting then they should've switched as well.

Then you must leave your screen on 24/7 and never turn it off. If you don't, then it's not going to burn-in that quickly.

No I guess they haven't changed, there are still people posting on here that complain, point fingers, and immediately put blame on the hardware.

Does your phone have a delay when turning the display on?

I noticed that there would sometimes (50% chance) that there will be a noticeable 1 second delay when pushing the power button and when the display actually turns on. It's annoying because sometimes i'll want to check the time, and i'll push the button as i'm taking it out of my pocket only to be met with a black display still.
i tried turning off the pattern lock thinkng that was it but still having the same problem.
i'm completely stock.
No delay here...when I press the power button, my display comes on instantly.

Still thread ****ting on every topic about the delay?
Its obvious why the delay doesn't bother you; you already have too much time on your hands.
Otherwise, it's an obvious flaw in the phone. Why don't you let other people worry about their own lives and how many seconds are wasted.

thanks for the link, i'll check it out.
yes its terrible anyone have a fix to this yet
If it's because of the SD card, trying increasing the SD Card Read Ahead Buffer. It can be built into the kernel or changed with a few market apps, or even a script. It'll also make photos/videos/anything from the SD card load faster.

Isn't this forum built for people who want to get the most of their devices? If everyone just decided things were 'good enough' you wouldn't have devs here writing custom kernels and ROMs. If the issue doesn't bother you then don't bother posting in the thread. And if you absolutely must, don't be a douche about it.
OT: I noticed it too. This is my first smartphone, but it stood out. I assumed it was normal. It's not huge, but I definitely wouldn't mind a fix that didn't require abandoning my SD card.

Agreed, especially since it's a 32GB card and it's transferable between phones...
Screen lags reminds me of pre-pay gas purchases.

This is your first smartphone and it stood out to you? I have had 15 smartphones and would have never noticed it until someone mentioned it. It's not a HUGE issue, but it is something that should be fixed.
In fact, just to move things forward, I tried increasing the SD Read Ahead Buffer with an app "SD Card Booster" or some name like that, which doesn't decrease the speed of the screen coming on, but does drastically cause photos and other things to load faster when you, say, open the Gallery. That was expected though. We used to increase it on the OG Evo.
Ive owned a few smartphones noticed ET lag after 3rd wake up.
First thing I thought of was Sprint Blackberry curve 8330-M.
It did the same thing drove me crazy lol
I tell you what...take your phone back to Sprint and tell them you have a 2 second lag and see what they say...maybe you can get a new phone...its obviously a defect...

Never! so those that think samsung gives a care you better think twice.

Jap, i also try that, nothing changed..
Picture actually looks pretty good for it to be a low light indoor shot. Plus your computer monitor casts a light bleed on your picture. Have to remember this is a camera on a phone and not a high end dslr camera. So pictures in low light can always come out bad and grainy.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk
Grain in dark pictures are expected. I have a canon 5d mkIII and even with a full-framed sensor, it'll still pick up some grain. Our phone does pretty well for the size of the sensor. Wouldn't sweat it unless the purple hue attacks
This is a well-documented issue with the One.
HTC says it should be fixed in software on the 4.3 update. I'm not 100% convinced. If it's not fixed, I'll be getting rid of the phone. My low-light pictures are awful compared to other phones I've owned.
As for the Canon guy.. I'm sure you have way more settings you can change over the phone's setting to make your 5D pics better
Thank you guys for yours answers,i will play again with my phone's camera's settings. I thought that the Ultrapixell kamera is perfect in low-light. i as wrong..

I didn't know the grainy pics was "well documented." I only know of the purple hue issue. If I use the night setting it helps a lot and I've been pleased with the pics, better than my S4 in many settings.
I suppose you could try night mode, maybe with a low iso to see how your pics look.

Search "htc one camera issue" and you will get a google's worth of results of discussions on the topic.
Purple Hue and Grainy are pretty much the same issue, or I have both issues with two HTC Ones now. I tried every setting in the book. Nothing made it better. Night mode made them blurry on top of it, as I'm holding the phone at a very slow shutter speed, this was expected. Tried ISO as well. It just sucks.

I agree one hundred percent. I envy those of you that do not have this issue. I purchased mine second hand. To my knowledge, the warranty is non-transferable. Just hoping that the Verizon update will patch this, if it is not straight up hardware. I tried the 4.3 roms, but they are ports, and this probably goes deeper than just a surface flash.
If I may be so bold, please allow me to share my experience. I was having an issue with grainy pictures. When I covered my lens it would turn red. I sent a support request to HTC. They gave me the runaround for about 2 weeks saying to wait for 4.3, the software will fix it. Then they told me to use third-party camera apps. Eventually I got mad, closed the ticket. I sat there and fumed and then walked away. A day later I got a "tell us how we did" email. I laced into them and told them that I had a bad experience, that my camera is clearly defective and being told to use third-party apps that still have the issue isn't a fix. I got a response back and they asked if I had considered sending it for repair. I told them that I had never been given that option. The guy told me he was going to call me and he did. We talked for about 5 minutes, he took my info, he sounded like a cool guy. We joked a bit. He offered to pay shipping into HTC. I sent it in.
I got it back today. It's a night and day difference. It's actually catches focus like it should. When I cover the lens it stays jet black. It's a big difference. Send it back. Let them fix it. It sucked to be without it but it took them about a week round trip. It was worth it.

What did they "fix"? Did they state that in the repair documents? Are you still on the current OTA release of software? I'm wondering what the fixed for free that is the root of the actual problem.
I'm on my 3rd phone in 7 weeks now (for other issues than the camera), and I still have the issue.

They didn't share any repair document with me at all. They just shipped my phone back in a "gift" box with a screen rag. No documentation at all. I have to assume that they replaced or repaired the camera sensor. A month or so back there was a link in the forums about trying to narrow down if it was a sensor issue or not. They had us record the camera sensor version. It involved finding a particular file and then opening it in a text file. In any case, even then with only like 35-40 responses there were at least 9 different camera sensor versions. Also, my camera seemed ridiculously sensitive to motion. I don't have the most steady hands but I also don't have seizures every time I take a picture either. The old camera (or firmware) seemed to exaggerate any motion.
As for the OTA, I sent it to them with OTA .8. They shipped it back .10. I've since flashed NuSenseONE but I have a TWRP backup of the ROM as it arrived back to me.. plus logging into a few things. If there is anything in particular that you are interested in, such as a file version or something, let me know.

Nothing I'm particularly interested in. I was wondering if they owned up to it being software or hardware. I too, went through calling HTC, explaining the issue, going through an hours worth of diagnostics on my phone, before they told me it would be fixed in 4.3 release. Perhaps they have a 4.3 release that includes a camera sensor firmware update as well? Are are you suggesting that the camera versions are 9 different versions of hardware?
I don't know.. the camera on here just isn't what it's cracked up to be. It's great in PERFECT conditions, but sub-standard when not in perfect conditions.

I'm not at all sure what I'm suggesting now. I just went back to that survey and looked through the results, and it looks like there are literally 100's of different possible results from that sensors file. What I did find that is probably of no value at all is that my phone, before it was serviced had the following text in the sensor text file:
Before servicing:
st vd6869(1.0) cinesensor 2013-04-29
After servicing:
st vd6869(1.0) cinesensor 2013-09-16
I don't know if that is just a firmware revision, or the manufacturing date of the sensor itself, but if you look in that link to the survey results there are probably 50 different dates.
Here is something that may be of interest to you. The guy who started the thread mentioned sending it in to repair and they sent him the work order. They replaced his camera with a SHARP sensor and the results he posts are far superior to what he had before. Link here
Is this admission of guilt or just a result of part shortage? Or just typical hardware phase-out/phase-in.

So yeah, pretty old it seems.

Screen looks... awful??

Has anyone noticed that, for all its pixel density, there is some really poor-looking emphasis on edges? Lots of places throughout the stock UI, fonts, icons, etc, will have their edges brighter than the rest of the object. What's more is this is not uniformly applied, so you wind up with some words or icons having this edge detection going on, and in other places, things look properly "flat".
Frankly it makes this "beautiful" screen look really ugly, since the UI it displays looks really ugly.
You may be talking about the over sharpening issue that's been discussed to death on these forums. Hopefully LG fixes it with an OTA update, or we get it fixed with ROMS.

Hoping for an OTA fix is a pipe dream. LG will not fix this since they will consider that they put a lot of hard work in to over sharpen their UI. Not your UI, their UI, for their phone. Not your phone. So that will never get fixed.
That, combined with the hilarious decision to put the buttons on the back, which no software can address, just kind of leaves some glaring issues. Issues? No, too soft a word. Let's just call them what they are. Errors. Errors in judgment, errors in design, whatever. They got it wrong.

You knew the buttons were on the back before you bought it so the error is yours if you find there placement an issue.
I think the screen is fantastic and don't have the problem you speak of.

Lol, buying a device with buttons on the back...just to come on xda and complain about buttons on the back? Okie
As far as the screen sharpness, they do need to address it somehow because black text are indeed awful (not to the point i will complain about them awful though)
Should have done your homework before buying a device that OBVIOUSLY came with buttons on the back though...considering it was flashed all over the internet so you cannot say "oh i bought it and realized buttons were on the back" lol

You have it, it just doesn't bother you. Good for you, my eyes are pretty sharp though and don't need LG's help in that regard. Button placement? Sure. Sure I knew that beforehand. That does not mean it's my error. It's still LG's error. See, I can't really use this thing before I purchase it. They have display models in stores, but the backs (and often the sides) are covered in whatever anti-theft anchoring the store uses. It's not until I get the device home, have it in my pocket, that these usability errors can really make themselves felt. It didn't bother me while the device was in my hand, I thought, well, maybe I will just learn, in time, where my fingers should go. Fine.
But then, and imagine this scenario as being one I cannot replicate in a store with a demo model, the phone was laying face side up on my desk, and I wanted to turn the volume down. Or I wanted to turn the screen off. I can do that without picking the phone up with just about all other phones in the world. Inconvenient. This is a small issue! This is not a big deal. But. But I paid $600 for this, I am not supposed to have to put up with some minor inconvenience, is how I see it. For their flagship phone, the top of LG's current heap, they shouldn't have got any "small issues" wrong. But they did. They got this wrong. And while people replying to this thread seem to want to forgive LG, and that is your prerogative, I refuse to do so.
Doesn't your phone have knock code to switch the screen off? Or have volume controls in the notification area?

Anyway, the screen looks terrible and the big beautiful screen is the biggest selling point (or am I wrong on this? some argue camera...).
I wouldn't return the phone because the buttons were on the back and yes, "lol", I knew they were there before, during, and after purchasing it.
The big beautiful screen turning out to be not very beautiful, now that, that I could return a phone over. There's not even an option to disable the over-sharpening. Tell me that is not a design failure.
Why is this thread even in existence? This topic been covered elsewhere and not to mention the rest of the post are off topic.

I have found that the stock theme/wallpapers/icons etc don't do the device any favors. Tweaking these things made the phone much more tolerable for me.

Including but not limited to. Sharpening is an issue, but since you cannot disable it, and since it is not by default enabled across all text rendering, not in all apps, etc, it's not uniform. The UI winds up non uniform. The entire graphical feel of it seems mixed and weird. So it made me feel like the display itself was not that great. I actually wondered if there was something physically wrong with my screen. Or, since it was not a uniform problem, was it only one part of the screen that was perhaps damaged or something.

Fine.

First, to your last post, the hardware buttons no software can address?
Tweaksbox can, they are hardware buttons like all others, it doesn't matter where they are on the device.
Turning the device off while flat on the table? Double tab the statusbar (yes, works with every launcher and in any app).
Sound: volume slider within notifications?!
If it's that much of an issue for you, swap it, simple as that, i do like having the buttons on the back, why? I can't press them by accident while gaming and i love the feel of having just the edges while in hand.
Last but not least, the oversharpening is your point, i don't really notice it and really like the screen, but that doesn't matter, that's just me, but anyways I'm pretty sure there will come an update for it, if not, that's xda, the bootloader unlock is almost released, there will be a fix for that, because, you know what, it's our device and we can mod the hell out of it if we like to. Every flagship has it's flaws, there isn't any perfect device on the market, if those of this device bug you too much, swap it for another, maybe those flaws you can stand.

Buttons on the back is not an ERROR its lg DESIGN go to the lg 2 you will see, it wasn't thought over night...do not place your dislike on lg "error"
over sharpness been talked to death as it is. I never understand why people complain, don't like something return it. Its that much of an issue? return it. since I have gotten the phone I have only touched the volume keys for one, and only one thing....to take screen shot. Knock on puts the phone on for me, a simple double tap. If I want to be fancy, I can use the knock code or w.e the hell they call it. I only need my volume on two things, silent, vibration and sound...if its too loud notification is there to reduce it or voila...the buttons on the back a simple press will fix it.I do not need to move my hand in any weird kind of a way to do anything, I do not accidently have to press on the volume keys like i have done so many times.
The screen is beautiful without auto brightness. The oversharpness is batter of taste...you will either like it or you will hate it. You obviously hate it so very simple, return the phone instead of beating on the same dead horse. The screen is awful? we knoooooooooooooooooow from xda and all over the net and all over google + and every social media....the text are sharp? we knoooooooooooooooooooow...go return the phone.

You are complaining about my complaints. I never understand why people complain about other people complaining. Don't like my complaint, ignore it. It's that much of an issue? Close your browser. :silly:
And with that, reported. We don't need another repetitive, argumentative thread that goes nowhere.
Than get rid of the error and return the phone like you said, no custom rom will fix that itch for you. Stop being a statistic of the list of people beating on the same dead horse.
Good luck on your future ventures I HOPE you do far more research on your next phone hunt huh? You rarely post in this forum as it is according to your junior status, member of 2011. Let hope the next post you choose to do about that phone wont result in something like this

Ghost Quick Scrolls, 8.1 issue?

Hi all,
I have recently been noticing ghost scrolls, where I would be slowly scrolling downwards, say, in the XDA app or reddit app, and randomly it would scroll quickly upwards when I lift my fingers. I was thinking this was a hardware issue so I got a replacement device on the way. However, I saw this https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/7rczu2/scrolling_up_when_scrolling_down/.
Has anyone else been experiencing the same thing? I posted a vid and pic https://imgur.com/a/ny8fT. The second pic is touch input trace enabled in developer options, you can see there was a ghost long fast drag down to the bottom below the navbar.
Have been away from XDA for a while, please let me know if I am going against any rules about posting images hosted on other sites.
I wonder if something like this is what causes Twitter to randomly show me a different tweet when I tap on one. (maybe it's doing a phantom scroll briefly).

yep, thats happened to me a few times before as well. Not twitter specifically, but in reddit I would click on a post, and somehow I would end up on some random other post like 2 post below it, and if I hit back once, I get to the post I originally intended to click on instead of the subreddit list.
So there must be some sort of ghost touches/scrolls on finger release, causing the unintended post to be queued up just before the intended one.
I'm surprised there hasn't been more people bringing up this issue (assuming this is indeed a software 8.1 issue and not an isolated issue in the touch panel).
Reddit has done that to me too, come to think of it.
Agreed that it's surprising we aren't hearing more of this. Makes me wonder if I should do a warranty swap.

Yea, I have a replacement device on the way, but after hearing a few others experiencing the same issue, I'm starting to think it might not be a hardware issue after all.

definitely doesnt sound like a hardware issue.. ive experienced this on more devices than the p2xl and more so on stock.. u also might get it when ur data lags..
on the available custom roms i cant say i remember the last time it occurred.. either way, it cant be that bad to even remotely consider replacing it

Oh really? Have you only experienced this on 8.1 only, or also 8.0? I had the pixel 2 xl back in October/November on 8.0 and didn't experience any of this. I just repurchased the 2 xl several days ago and immediately noticed it within the first few hours of playing around with it.
I think it definitely is a software bug, if not a hardware issue. The touch input trace shows a ghost drag of a perfectly straight line to the bottom of the touch panel with an incredibly high Yv, I got one as high as 179. Normal hard flick scrolling would top out at around 30 or 40, so definitely something fishy going on here, whether it's software or hardware.
It happens for me like between 5 and 10 times within half an hour to an hour, and they are usually annoying enough where I lose my place where I was scrolling.

prolly 8.1.. i got mine around december late nov. pretty sure its software related.. they had an issue with touch on the lockscreen right?
It seems like so many touch issues with 8.1 release. For this reason, I am still using 8.0.

Any update with the replacement device? I am having the same sporadic ghost scroll: I'll be scrolling down a page on reddit or slickdeals app (happens with other apps as well), and randomly it'll perform a strong up-scroll... I notice it more often when I lay in bed on my side, and have the screen orientation locked to portrait, resting the phone on the bed horizontally...

Replacement device has the same issue, so this is definitely a software bug. Hopefully Google fixes it soon in the next patch update.
Nexus 6P here. I started getting these ghost touches with the last security update. 8.1 is the problem, not a solution.
My mom has the same issue of touch on places she doesn't touch, on Pixel XL.
Could it be the same?
Here is a video about it that I took, just by scrolling in the settings screen:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JCsTuMDvMNHh0CO7sF7yoLFT26uNIhUp/
It's a bit hard to reproduce, but it occurs eventually.
Has anyone tried to use Android P, and see if it helps?
Anyway, I've reported about this here too:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pi...h-pixel-xl-t3807188/post76879468#post76879468
Any fixes yet?
I know this is old, but I wanted to know if anyone found a fix for this. I eventually found an Oreo 8.1 Rom that I like and this is the only issue that's bothering me.

Android 10 Screen On Time?

How do you see how long the screen has been on? It's no longer available through Samsung's Device Care. I'd rather not resort to installing any apps, I'm just hoping this is a detail I'm overlooking.

You're not going to find it at that screen. Show me where that has a total for actual screen on time, not battery drain per app.
Nevermind, I run my screen super dim and didn't even notice the screen on time right there. Thanks for helping me open my damn eyes lol.

Turns out that will not what I was looking for. That just tells the screen on time for a particular day. I'm looking for the screen that gives details since the last charge. For whatever reason, Samsung has done away with this.
