Wi-fi calling - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I have a Pixel 2 XL and have only seen wifi calling work once. How can i make this default when i am at home on the WiFi network?

turn on airplane mode, then re-enable wifi.

How would that enable it as I just tried and it didn't work.
Surely there has to be a way of doing it

I would start by looking over this thread if you are on T-mobile. https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/help/t-mobile-wifi-calling-pixel-2-xl-setting-t3761477

I started that thread. I can't speak for other carriers but on T Mobile there is a setting under wifi advanced to prioritize wifi, called "wifi preferred". With that, if Wi-Fi calling is working, I get a Wi-Fi call most of the time when I'm near my home network.

Automate WiFi Calling On/Off

Thanks for reading.
I am looking for a way to automate turning WiFi calling on/off. I have attempted to do this with Tasker but with no luck. I have read several threads but they seem to be referencing an older WiFi calling solution that was an app.
I am using the T-Mobile Samsung S4 w/ 4.3 and the WiFi calling settings are under Settings->My Device (Tab)->Call->Wi-Fi Calling. this phone is not rooted (corporate policy) so there I cannot use D-pad instructions to select the option.
Any thoughts?

I just took a look at the code, I think you are out of luck without root my friend. :/
I was under the assumption that it was automatic.
With Wi-Fi calling on and you're out of Wi-Fi range cellular network take over. There's a few options under Wi-Fi calling setting as to which you prefer first, Wi-Fi or cellular signal

Your assumption is correct, however if you set it to Cellular preferred and you get a call with only 10% cell signal it will come across the voice channel, and in my case most likely drop. This is when I am at the office. Conversely when I am at home my wireless coverage is spotty and I wouldn't want to use WiFi calling. So my ultimate goal is to use Tasker to turn on WiFi calling when I am at the office and turn is off when I leave. I hope this clarifies what I am trying to accomplish.

Wifi issue

Does anyone know how to stop the WiFi from turning on automatically ? I have all of the options for the WiFi off and I'll turn the WiFi of but my WiFi will still turn on and say there is a hotspot available.

You mean the options under Advanced in Wi-Fi settings you have off right? If so I am not sure I have not noticed my Wi-Fi coming on without me hitting the toggle.
Yes all the settings in advanced are unchecked,I will turn off my WiFi and next thing ya know I'm getting a notification that there is a hotspot available and sure enough my WiFi is on again! Its starting to get annoying that I get the hotspot notification all the time

That is odd, one of the options under advanced is to make it so it does not try to connect to hot spots in general, also the other says to make it not scan while Wi-Fi is off. If both those are unchecked and it is still happening then there is some sort of issue I would guess. Hopefully someone else with the issue pops in here after a bit.
Me too
Yes, this is happening to my Note 4 as well. All settings in WiFi>Advanced are "off" and when I go walking through the neighborhood and turn on the phone I get a screen showing a list of wi-fi networks.

Im gonna guess everyone has saw this already but thought i would post it anyway. In the advanced menu in wifi, there is a section called Always Allow Scanning. Description says "Let google location service and other applications scan for wifi networks, even when wifi is off". Sounds as if that could be the issue but if everything is already unchecked in the advanced settings menu, then im at a loss as well. Im gonna test this on my Note 4 and see if i am getting the same issue you guys are getting.
Nope no issues here i don't get that i turned it off, and i would know this cause if i walk in Walmart i use to get that on the the Wifi Hotspot not no more since i've turned it off, use to tell me the same for kmart or the AT&T Store where i live no more since i've turned it off!
Try disabling AT&T Smart Wifi. Could be the cause, especially if its alerting you to "hotspots".
I have the T Mobile version and it does the same. The white menu pops up telling that there is Wi Fi available, listing hotspots.
On my previous Note 3, it did not present itself as a page over my screen even if I had Wi Fi turned on. I simply had notifications of available wi fi's turned off. But it seems with the Note 4 one has to turn off wi fi completely for this to not show up?

Check in Location Services... Specifically the google stuff. One of them allows the use of your WiFi & GPS data even if they are turned off... Meaning if you choose the high accuracy mode (instead of GPS only) the location services will periodically turn those things on to better pinpoint your location (and send that data back to google)

Wifi Calling Preferred?

Is there anyway to set the pixel xl to prefer wifi calling at home (I am on Verizon, but the google version of the pixel). Wifi calling works - would like to "prefer" wifi instead of cellular (I have amazing wifi and meh cellular at my home). Yes, I can airplane mode it every day - just seems like a very hacky solution.
-D
Not that I'm aware of.
I also have poor cell reception in my cave. (-110 on band 13). Pretty much every call I make switches to wifi about 3 seconds into the call connecting. It'll also come out of wifi calling if I walk outside where the cell coverage is good. (Even if wifi is still good).
I specifically called pixel support and asked them, no option for this currently. I wish. Need it as well
EDIT: I tried to bypass cellular altogether by turning my phone on airplane mode, then using just wifi to force wifi calling, only to get no calls going through. This is a bummer, I use my iPhone with wifi calling whenever I travel this way, to make sure I don't make any accidental non-wifi calls which aren't free when international. If there's a way to force wifi calls with wifi on and airplane modeon for cellular calls, that would also be useful for travel

It should work this way unless it is different than every other Verizon phone with wifi calling. Sometimes it takes ten minutes or so of failed calls before it finally connects, then you're good from then on. I'll give it a shot and see...

On T-Mobile WIFI calling there's a clear option for 'wifi prefered' or 'cellular prefered' which works pretty much about every single time. It's in the places, on the dialer and on network settings, but sets the same option. I guess with verizon it's different?

I put my phone in airplane mode for 20 minutes and it still won't do wifi calling after turning wifi on
Mine works fine. I put phone in airplane mode then turn on wifi and connect. Calls and SMS go through immediately thereafter.

Airplane mode works for me too. Just a hassle. I have had T-mobile before - so I know "wifi-preferred" is an option - is that a setting somewhere we can hack at? I can't imagine that is a hardcoded thing that is unchangeable...
Feels like something we could diff pretty easily.
-D
Not the best solution, but I wrote a tasker to put the phone in airplane mode then turn WiFi back on, made it into an app and put it on the home page, so I can press that to go into WiFi calling.
Yea weirdly still not working for me. Wifi calling works fine with airplane mode off. Am I doing something wrong?
Are you reconnecting to your wifi after enabling airplane mode? I know it sounds rudimentary, but idk what could be going on.
If you pull down notifications then swipe down again to expand quick options then select the mobile network icon then "more options" you can turn off cellular network. This will force wifi calling. Reverse when leaving

Cellular data, not cellular network.

Is there a way to set the S9 to always prefer wifi calling?

I have almost no signal at home, but in certain areas I get one bar. That means that my phone will often turn wifi calling off and use the normal cell network, but the signal isn't actually good enough for calling.
There is an ADB command available on the Pixel that lets you configure the phone to prefer wifi calling. Does the same thing exist for the S9?
This is the thread that discusses the Pixel option:

Hi, if you want to improve your signal, go to settings-connections- mobile networks and set the network mode to 2G. Do that only when you dont use mobile data to have the highest available signal for text messages and calls. If you want the best signal for mobile data internet, set it to LTE/3G. Hope it helps.

Thanks, but my phone struggles with signal full stop indoors, so I need Wifi calling to always be on.
Go to the call screen. Tap the 3 dots in the upper right corner, select settings then wifi calling and select wifi preferred.

I do not have this option. The only thing I have in these settings is to turn WIFI caling on or off. I presume it's a carrier option.
Is there an ADB command I can run to unlock it? I tried the one I linked above but it didn't do anything.

I have wifi calling, but I want to prefer wifi calling. This setting exists for a lot of users but not for everyone. It seems really strange my carrier has disabled it.
In the dialler app the only setting I have is to turn it on or off. In settings/connections/more, there is nothing relating to WIFI calling.

Update disabled WiFi calling in airplane mode

I'm on a rooted pixel 2 XL, on vzw... I just updated to the June security update (from April) and I noticed that it is next to Impossible now to get any calls to go connect as Wi-Fi calling (Even when I have terrible service)
I already have Wi-Fi preferred setting enabled but it's not helping.
I also noticed what I used to do when I was in the basement is put the phone in airplane mode and turn on Wi-Fi and I would get texts calls and be able to make calls under Wi-Fi calling. Now if I try to make a call it says it's not allowed in airplane mode.
Is there a way to get around this???
***EDITED TO ADD RESOLUTION***
A clean flash of the latest update (June at the time of writing) fixed this WiFi calling issue!
The airplane mode plus wifi trick still works fine for me on the June update, both for calls and SMS.
Wifi calling always seems to disable itself after a couple days or weeks and then I have to reenable it, but it's been that way forever.

I have an UNLOCKED Version and Wifi-Calling is set as the default way to place a call from the factory, and when not in Wifi, it doesnt use wifi calling, but then uses LTE... I am able to turn OFF Wifi-Calling, altogether, by going In settings -->Network & Internet--->Mobile Network-->Bottom of page shows Wifi Calling settings.

just to clarify, i do have an unlocked phone (also rooted), but im on VZW network (not a verizon model phone).
All of my settings are correct, it shows wifi calling as being enabled, it shows volte, advanced calling, ect all turned on...
but it NEVER uses WiFi to make a phone call anymore ( previously would show wifi icon in the dialer screen). i also used to be able to force it to use wifi calling by turning on airplane mode and enabling wifi, but now that is blocked very clearly by a dialog warning.

Once you turn on airplane mode the wifi turns off too. You need to turn on wifi after you go airplane mode. It should work.

Did you dirty flash the security updates? Not sure if its Magisk 16.4 beta causing a problem? I doubt it because I was running that before the update. Maybe that was it...

I dirty flashed the June factory image using deuces script and I am using Magisk 16.4 beta. It maybe time to clean wipe; that usually solves any problems with this phone.
Shot in the dark here... I was having the same issue and even called Google (Project Fi) about the issue. I accidentally discovered on my own that I had to dial the area code when on Wifi or it would give me the error "Turn off airplane mode to make a call". This was when dialing only 7 digits. When I dial with the area code the call goes through over wifi with no problem. Maybe try dialing with the area code or with 1+area code+number.

Since it obviously works flawlessly on stock June update don't you think it's time to try that in order to eliminate hardware as the problem? Otherwise you're just spinning your wheels and asking to figure out a unique scenario.
