USB Options In Notification Area - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Updated to the latest March Security and now the USB Options are missing from the notification drop down. When I go into Developer Options and check USB Options, transfer files is missing. Only ones available are Charging>MTP>PTP>RNDIS(USB Ethernet)>Audio Source>MIDI.
ADB Devices no longer recognizes the device., though the phone is charging when connected by USB.
Had no problems with it before the update.

Well guess it was my laptop, rebooted and everything is ok. D'OH!

[Q] CM7: "Connect to pc" menu missing

Hi,
Apparently I can not post on the appropriate thread, so I'll have to create a new thread here.
I'm using the latest CM v7.0.3 rom and the "connect to pc" menu is missing. No "mount as harddisk", no "charge only". I can not access my SD card from the pc at all. Am I missing something? Reboot and/or connecting and disconnecting my device multiple times to different PCs didn't help either.
Thanks for any help,
- McManiaC
Umm, when you connect your phone via usb to the pc, the usb icon and usb connected msg should popup, slide down the status bar, tap the usb connected notification and then pick turn on usb storage , the phone is already charging when connected to usb so you don't get that charge only option
Well yes, that's what it should be like - but exactly that notification is missing. It's been there in previous versions of CM/HTC Sense, but I don't get that pop-up in the latest CM703...
usb / connect to pc menu missing
i have the same problem on my legend with CM710 stable...
i remember this option was there (and a menu popped up when you plugged it in) but now it is not there anymore and nothing happens when i plug it in (windows: usb dev not recognized, ubuntu doesnt even recognize any usb device)... although the phone continues to charge...
i suspect that i might have done a factory reset or something after which this problem started... (or i may have disassembled the phone to replace the touchscreen/lcd... but has been carefully reassembled and everything else works fine..)
even tried to recover to old backups, flashing the rom again but nothing happens, still no connect to pc menu in settings nor does pluggin it in works...
gonna try to flash a stock froyo rom and see what happens..
if i am missing anything then please let me know...

[Q] S4 mini not connecting to computer, no USB settings?

Okay so I want to manually update to 4.4 (I have the normal 4.2.2 for this model). So first I connect my phone to my laptop to create a backup just in case something goes wrong. And SURPRISE! USB Device Not Recognized. Tried changing the port, the wire, restarting the phone, the laptop, no change. The USB notification is also not showing on the phone, it just sees it as regular charging.
I never had this problem before... I even used USB debugging several times. I thought maybe somehow the settings changed and it's no longer set to MTP. So I go to my phone's settings and can't find the USB settings to check. Looked it up online, they are supposed to be under storage when I press the menu button. I press it and nothing happens, and the USB connection settings are nowhere to be found.
Any ideas?
Have you tried to install your phone's USB driver in your computer?

1. Turn on USB debugging
2. Upgrade to the newest version of Kies
3. Ensure it connects as MTP [media device] not PTP [camera]

Connecting to PC to Browse

Wow, I would think this would be easy (coming from a Nexus 5), I just plugged in the N5 via USB to my Windows 7 machine and boom, I could browse the phone. Now, trying to do this with my G3, I have installed Windows drivers and nothing. I plug the phone in and nothing happens other than a pop up on the phone saying it is charging slowly. I've searched the LG site and Google and found references to MTP and having 3 options when connecting the phone to the PC but I get none of those options and cannot find an MTP option in settings. All I can find is a Connect to PC which tells me to use LG PC Suite. I really don't want to install some other software. I just want to browse the phone and copy files over. Is this not possible with the G3?
Switch usb ports. Set up usb connection as MTP.
Huh? As mentioned, I don't get any options to select MTP. Drivers installed, various USB ports tried, nothing happens other than a slow charging pop up.
Edit: Seems the system at work for some reason does not see the device properly. Just tried at home on my PC and it's fine. Bizarre.
If it's a work PC, it is possible your system admin disabled MTP completely. Because, you know... security and stuff.
try going on your phone while it is plugged into the pc

Pixel XL Fastboot Works to Flash Stock ROM+TWRP. Unseen as USB in TWRP or OS

I have 3 of these devices I'd successfully flashed TWRP to months ago. I can plug the other 2 into any of my Win10 PCs and they are functional as MTP devices in TWRP or the OS. Something is wrong with this device in that fastboot works fine, yet it is not recognized as a USB device at all in Windows. No device detected ding. No yellow exclamation point in device manager. Nothing in Nirsoft's USB DevView. I was unsure if this device received an OTA update so I went ahead and flashed the latest stock firmware as of 5/24/2017
It successfully flashed albeit unusually slow (even though Nirsoft USBDevView showed it connected at USB 2.0 and not 1.1). It also successfully flashed the latest Pixel XL Marlin-3.1.0-0RC2
Even if I attempt to toggle MTP in TWRP there is no response in Windows (on any of my PCs) nor is there any response when it's booted to Android 7.1.2. Same when toggled to PTP. Same w/ USB Debugging enabled. The device charges fine. Checking OTA updates shows none available. Factory reset option in bootloader didn't help.
I'm sure I'm missing something like I somehow have the incorrect firmware loaded for something. Anyone know what specifically is responsible for the USB at the firmware level that would allow it to function in fastboot mode yet fail to detect when booted TWRP or OS???

When booted into the OS and plugged into PC, do you have a notification on the pixel that the device is connected and an option to change how to interact with the PC?

I can plug it into the PC and charge it up and receive a full charged reached message in the notification bar. Unfortunately I do not receive any other acknowledgement in the notification bar that it's connect to the PC and to toggle from "charge only" to PC MTP connection like most other phones present.
Its not recognized as a USB device at all in Windows. No device detected ding. No yellow exclamation point in device manager. Nothing in Nirsoft's USB DevView.
Yet I can flash it successfully all day long in fastboot mode ... so strange.

What happens when you change the default USB Configuration in Developer Options to MTP or PTP and the plug in the phone to the computer?

No response on the phone or PC when set to MTP or PTP. Same w/ USB debugging off or enabled.

I know this may seem like a stupid question, but have you tried using a different cable? If the phone recognizes fastboot mode commands but not PTP or MTP, then perhaps the cable is going bad. I would blame it on your drivers but fastboot mode wouldn't work if the drivers were malfunctioning.

Same behavior with a different cable. I've also tested on USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports. Also different PCs. Up until today I couldn't get Windows to acknowledge anything. Today I observed Windows a couple times present "usb device not recognized. the last usb device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it."
However even after it did that once on one PC today and again on another PC today, I couldn't get Windows to present that message any subsequent times. Even when that message did appear as a system tray notification in Windows, Windows still wasn't showing the phone with a yellow exclamation point in device manager like it sometimes can for many other devices it would otherwise present such a message for. (I just speak from past experience with older PCs)

Wow...that's puzzling then. You said in your op that you factory reset using bootloader menu but have you tried flashing factory image with fastboot in bootloader? Maybe the firmware that's malfunctioning could be fixed with a factory image flash...

That's what's killing me. I can successfully factory image flash (same I've flashed on the other handsets). Yet the USB doesn't work in the OS. When this initially happened I thought for sure USB was going to work like usual in TWRP (works on the others) but it doesn't work there either.
The only other thing I can think of out of desperation is flash Pure Nexus ROM or Resurrection remix in the hopes that somehow affects a USB bit setting at the firmware level. (Mind you flashing factory nor TWRP helped).
My exotic theory is that fastboot driver has an ability to work in USB 1 mode and TWRP or OS level driver can only work in USB 2.0/3.0 mode. Even though I don't see any visual defects to the pinout on this handset I'm guessing my pins for charging and for USB 1 mode is fine whereas my pins for USB 2.0/3.0 are electrically damaged or something.

Well i guess you could try some ROM flashing and see if that works and if not, try contacting Google and see if they will honor a warranty or something. Good luck to ya!

Cant transfer files from my phone to my pc via usb

so im using a pixel 2 xl, and i cant seem to transfer files between my phone and any pc whatsoever, i used to do this easily before, ive tried everything, turned on usb debugging, use the notification drawer changed the cable, but nothing seems to be working, what coudl be the problem and how do i solve it ??????????????????
USB mode now always defaults to "charging". You have to change it manually to "MTP" each time. At least in my experience.
I had the same problem. With my Nexus 5x and USB-C to USB cable it works, but with my Pixel 2 XL it works not, so i had to buy a new USB-C to USB cable and now it works.
Not sure what cable you are using but do not use a USB C to USB C cable, make sure its a USB c to USB a.

Ive been having issues lately too. Doesnt matter which cable i use. It will connect then disconnect over and over again. IT may be my computer but not sure how to check why it would be doing that.
Are you doing gigabytes of data? If it's just in the hundreds of megabytes transfer to Google Drive. I do that when I have files on my computer I want over to my phone and vice versa.

I had the same issue with my Pixel 2 as well and after reading through numerous forums, I figured out how to fix it. its been two days now and I am still able to transfer files via USB.
Here is what you need to do:
1) Enable developer mode by going into Settings > System About Phone > Build number and tapping a few times (5 I think!)
2) Click back and then select Advanced > Developer Options
3) Scoll down the menu until you see "Default USB configuration". Tap and then select the option you require (ie: File Transfer)
4) Click back, then scroll up the menu till you see "USB Debugging". Enable USB Debugging.
5) Connect your Pixel 2 to you laptop/PC. The phone should appear in the Devices list in 'Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers. Leave it connected for another 5 or 10 minutes and it should become available in "This PC"
6) Disconnect the Pixel2 from your laptop/PC
7) Disable "USB Debugging" and disable "Developer Mode" on the phone.
8) Reconnect the Pixel2 to your PC/Laptop. It should now appear under "This PC" every time you connect and you should now be able to view and transfer files between you PC and Pixel2.
Let me know if it works for you or not.

I had the same issue on my notebook yesterday - the phone would connect, but once I transmitted a larger file the transmission was terminated after a few seconds.
In my case it wasn't the cable, it was the USB port on my notebook! I simply used a different one and then it worked flawlessly
Thank god my notebook has 4 USB ports, I pity people with notebooks with a single USB port

Got the same problem. Since a few days device isn't recognized on any computer. Tried serveral usb cables (they were all working before) - no success. As soon as i am connecting device to a windows computer it says "device couldn't get regonized properly". So it isn't recognized as android phone. So your method didn't work (tried all the steps before). I also remarked before, thad my device sometimes restarts as i plug in an usb cable. Mainly when connected to a pc but also serveral times only when charging. So i resetted my device back to all stock (even formated data), flashed original boot whitout twrp, no root. It's starting nice but i even can't install the update (january patch) through device. Alway gives me install error. So it isn't recognized in adb... So i can't use fastboot mode to reinstall twrp.... Any advice? Think gonna claim for replacement.... Seems a hardware problem.
Had something similar a couple of months back.
Just do a quick check with usb dac and otg. If they are not working, the component is fried. RMA.
Else, faulty cable or friend port in laptop.
