After a year of hard work, @steadfasterX has finally unlocked our device! Hopefully we'll get some new roms soon. Full thread is here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/unlock-unlock-lg-g4-device-usu-t3760451
Edit: We are currently able to run any custom rom for H811 on our device! One thing is that we must do the modem flash in TWRP that steadfaster mentions in his FAQ.
Edit 2: Currently only stock Lollipop or stock Marshmallow will run on VS986 with everything working. AOSCP and other custom roms will boot but you will not pull the correct APN for Verizon and therefore will have data but no cell service including MMS or voice calls. You must have the stock MM bootloader stack flashed after you go through the UsU process for everything to work correctly and the stock MM modem.
@fates13,
I know you're trying to get Nougat working on your VS986 and it's not 100% working yet.
I suggest people wait until you get things resolved if they rely on their VS986 as their daily phone.
Please post an update here once you think everything is working. The other thread has a lot of posts since it covers other G4 models too.
Thank you
@fates13,
Were you able to get your VS986 to the point of everything worked after UsU unlock and ROM installation?

Yes but only stock MM works properly with data and cell. This can probably be fixed by a proper rom developer for our phone. Advanced calling also doesn't work properly so just waiting until @steadfasterX has time to make a UsU patched kernel for stock MM.

Are you able to boot to twrp.
If your still stuck on boot.img go to your salt back ups is located in the home folder and right click in the folder and click open in terminal put your phone in fastboot mode type in terminal "fastboot flash boot boot.img" and after that "fastboot reboot" and see if your phone boots up if you don't have the salt backup let me know

How exactly did you install TWRP? Or if you solely used magisk, how did you flash the patched_boot.img?
I was asking you about TWRP to see if you installed it. You flash all the files in fastboot. You get into fastboot by unplugging the battery wait 4 seconds plug it back in hold volume down and plug your phone in to your computer you should be in fastboot mode. You can download TWRP from the unlock Page. I will upload the pach boot.img and paste the link for TWRP later because I'm not at my computer right now. Be careful NOT to flash the aboot.img you should only flash the boot.img (once I upload it) and the recovery.img right now

Ah, different person than you were talking to before. The way I read your post, it sounded like maybe you figured out a way to sideload (if that is the correct term) the patched boot image that magisk makes without the part of the UsU method that causes "Once you go this way - there is no way back! SERIOUSLY. The only way to make the device exactly like before is replacing the mainboard. If you're scared: good." Maybe something like this: ?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/help/how-to-determine-dd-parameters-lg-g4-t3184867
Was just looking into my options for if I should wait until a method comes out that doesn't make a permanent alteration or if I should just go ahead and take the plunge with UsU. Your thoughts on whether that change that is made could affect me badly in the long run?

sorry about that the only way to root the latest FW is to unlock the bootloader. as long as you flow the guide and read carefully you shud be fine and if it's too scary just downgraded to LP and root that way (look on xda Verizon G4 general tab)
Has any one got calling and texting working on any costum rom for vs986?
Probably a dumb question, but I'm on 13b rooted. I read through the unlock thread and it mentions MM is required and anti rollback <=2. My ARB value is currently 2. Can I just use LGUP to flash stock MM? Will this preserve my ARB value?

Here's the official OTA link to update from LCA43 (Lollipop) to MEC24H (Marshmallow). Enjoy! You can only flash this on a watch that is completely stock! If you need to restore your watch, Sony PC Companion might work.
https://android.googleapis.com/pack...e2ee74fbab.signed-tetra-MEC24H-from-LCA43.zip
Small note: This OTA will update the bootloader to block "tethered booting" in fastboot while the bootloader is locked (so you will have to unlock the bootloader to use TWRP). If you want to keep the old bootloader, there is a post on the third page. This zip is signed by Sony, so you can flash it in stock recovery with a locked bootloader.
Edit: Here are some screenshots. Not much has changed compared to Lollipop, and Sony hasn't added anything compared to other watches, so they're not very interesting. https://imgur.com/a/Vp8hY (Ambient Mode might look worse on your watch because after I flashed Marshmallow I edited build.prop to disable low bit ambient mode. If you want to do this too, I made a crappy tutorial for that on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidWea...an_disable_low_bit_ambient_mode_to_make_your/)

Open up adb on a computer and plug in the watch. Issue adb reboot recovery and tap the watch screen when the recovery droid picture shows up. Swipe down to the sideload option then swipe right. Issue adb sideload blahblah.zip (obviously put the real zip name where "blahblah" is) and wait. After it finishes, swipe to the reboot option and swipe right to select. Your watch has been updated!

No, because the mod is literally only adding a single character (#) to a line in build.prop. If I repacked it into a zip you would still have to boot TWRP and use adb to flash it, which is 90% of the work.

Thank you for link buddy. Was having a hard time finding firmware for this model.
Flashable Zip?
I had an update go awry, and now I can't get it to boot into anything but fastboot or twrp!
Can someone possibly make this into a flashable zip so I can install it via twrp? I'm at a loss. I can't get any of the support tools to recognize it. I can't get into download mode either. It just goes straight to twrp.
I was able to try a factory reset, but as soon as I chose 'yes' and hit the power button the second time I got the device software check error (due to unlocked bootloader) and then it goes right into twrp.
Is there anything I can do?
EDIT: I was able to get into download mode and use the LG FlashTool to get back and running **WHEW**

All are .kdz. You will lose root.
Nice, I needed the kdz to experiment with them, right now Im trying so hard in orden to complete an stable rom for our device and having this files is essential. Thenk you.

But the good thing about t-mobile is that rollback protection is not enabled. As a result, you can use the 10C root method, which is basically by flashing a prerooted 10c image to the tablet, to root tablet with 10e. So you can't have rooted 10e but you can root the 10e with prerooted 10c.

How did you get into download mode? Your problem sound similar to mine. I'm in a bootloop with TWRP installed. What is the difference between the '10c' and 10e' kdz files? I am missing something. I'm looking to flash my tablet back to stock after mistakenly accepting a OTA update (after rooting and TWRP) that sent me into a bootloop.
Thanks in advance. This forum is a life saver.
Had a bit of a roller coaster ride over the past 12 hours trying to flash lineageos onto my phone. Let me try to give an idea of what has happened so you guys know what's up:
To start off:
I downloaded the unlock apk from the asus website and ran it last night
Afterwards, I loaded into fastboot and installed twrp
I made a backup using twrp and then I wiped the internal storage
Tried to flash the lineageos rom and got error 7
I thought I would restart the phone and try again. Not being able to get back into bootloader I thought I bricked my phone. It was late night so I decided to sleep and come back to it.
Woke up this morning and got into bootloader (I assume I was just pressing the buttons incorrectly)
Restored my backup and used my phone for a bit
After googling, found that I needed to modify some files in the lineageos zip to fix the errror 7. Proceeded to do so by wiping again and flashing the modified rom along with gapps.
Got into bootloop. So I turned the phone off and booted into boot loader hoping to get into twrp again, and try once more. Now, when I select recovery mode, it doesnt work and puts me back to bootloader.
So this is where I am now. And I've tried a couple of things, that may or may not have messed this phone up.
First off I've tried to, reinstall twrp.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vM0ODzSb1y4 ( wrong link )
https://youtu.be/BJPEc1NG_k8
Using this link I ran the file that he has given while in bootloader. Nothing changed. So I also tried to just download the latest twrp and flash that. Resulting with the same situation as before.
With a little more google I figured I would flash some stock images.
http://www.android.gs/how-to-unbrick-asus-zenfone-2-and-go-back-to-stock-android-os/
With this website. I went and downloaded firmware from asus website. Extracted it and went about flashing each item. That is when I realized that the file doesnt contain a system.img. ****.
At this point I also had a system.img from:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/help/enter-recovery-551ml-z00a-t3345633/page2
And I just proceeded to try and flash that in replacement for what I did not have. But I got an error:
http://imgur.com/a/TldyG
Now from what I see here. It wiped it without adding anything. So now I'm a little scared.
I found this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5BNfaU_O9o
With links to various files. Now I'm not sure if I can just download one and flash each file like before.
TL;DR: I've tried to flash lineageos. It put me into bootloop. I can't get back into recovery. I tried to flash some img files I found and I messed up (check imgur link above). Not sure where to go from here.
Thanks for any help guys.

What were you on before you started? Usually the error 7 is because you weren't on the right bootloader. In this case you need the MM bootloader. If you were coming from Lollipop that would explain it.

I would go to this thread
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3448966
And download the 4.21.40.184 raw image and the asus flash tool. (Google how to use it) use the tool to flash the raw image. That will give you stock marshmallow. Then go get the modder tool from
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3458145
Use that to unlock and install TWRP.
Then you should be good to go to flash LinOS

And download the 4.21.40.184 raw image and the asus flash tool. (Google how to use it) use the tool to flash the raw image. That will give you stock marshmallow. Then go get the modder tool from
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3458145
Use that to unlock and install TWRP.
Then you should be good to go to flash LinOS

When trying to install the asus flash tool, it tells me that it failed to install drivers and that I should do them manually. Is that necessary?
I really do appreciate the help. Thanks so much.

It sounds from your first post that the drivers should already be installed. Fastboot commands worked for you before right?

Yes

Thanks
Thank you. Thank you. I am downloading the raw right now. Will update when I use the flash tool and try the modder.
For the modder it looks like I will:
-unlock bootloader
-install twrp
-root
and there is an option of installing xposed. Seems like it gives you more versatility when flashing roms. Do you think it is stable and has enough support to be used with the zenfone? Are updates done automatically and does the framework stay when updating/flashing roms?

Getting an error now running the asus flash tool. Any idea? http://imgur.com/a/gOqf2
Also, is it safe to turn the device off? After flashing the imgs I'm scared to turn it off. If I accidentally boot into os will the phone break?
If you plan on installing LinOS. You don't need to root first. (you can if you want, but it would be a waste of time). Xposed is great but I don't think it works with LinOS yet. (at least that was the case when I was on that rom) LinOS does have weekly Ota updates. Just need to have twrp 3.0.3 or higher for the update process to work

Hey guys. Today I tried rooting for the first time using this guide
In the third step of the article "3.Flashing TWRP and Rooting via TWRP" I pressed cancel when it asks for an encryption password(I hadn't put one yet). I also flashed the english TWRP( Recovery file) and not the one provided in the article . Now the phone just wont boot. Whenever I try to boot it, it gives me the error message:
"Your device has been unlocked and cannot be trusted.
ID: N/A"
And TWRP comes up everytime .
When i try booting from factory it shows:
"Your device has been unlocked and cannot be trusted.
ID: bad key"
and TWRP comes up.
The phone is still recognized in adb.I still haven't flashed SuperSU if that helps.
Should i Flash stock recovery and try again ?
Please send help, guys.

I have similar problem like yours. The solution to boot your drvice. If your in twrp go to advance - reboot - bootloader. And in bootloader menu click start. And your phone now is booted
This is a alternative solution. But it wont damage your device. Trust me

Reboots to show :
"Your device has been unlocked and cannot be trusted.

and goes into TWRP .

I don't think I messed with the OS . I just unlocked the bootloader and flashed TWRP without flashing SuperSU.(done it for the first time for my Moto Z play). Used Wipe to clear davlik, cache and that's it.haven't done anything in the recovery since then.
The only thing i remember messing up was to not input the encryption key when it prompt me for it by clicking cancel.
I've read in some forums that it doesn't boot if it doesn't have SuperSU flashed, but I'm not sure if it's safe since i don't exactly know what might or might now permanently brick my phone.
Also some forums had something to do with patching the kernels (don't know if that's what you call it) but i don't know if it's a safe thing to do since it might also permanently brick my phone.
Running Nougat April Security Patch.

You used the Chinese TWRP originally? Now you have alberto97 TWRP? Is this correct?
I would flash a custom ROM, why I'm saying that is it's far safer flashing a zip ROM than trying to flash the stock firmware.
Again I will remind people the flashing bootloaders on moto devices will inevitably cause hard bricks if you downgrade and the accept an ota.
---------- Post added at 06:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:39 PM ----------
The only solution and this applies only if you want to remain on the stock ROM.
Download the retail firmware and only manually flash the boot.img, the 10 sparsechunks and the OEM.img.
Do not use rsdlite!!
This should boot your phone.

I would install the aosp ROM as it is bare bones android.
As for bootloaders, when you receive an ota it flashes a new bootloader.
What some folks have done is because they feel like a new ota isn't working to their liking, they have downgraded their firmare, either by flashing the firmware package that can be downloaded. They flash the entire package including bootloader, what this does is set up a perfect hard brick scenerio for moto devices.
They accept an ota or for reasons that are beyond uderstanding, sideload the package and bam as soon as they restart there device it bricks their device due to the mismatched bootloaders.
You are unlocked and the easiest way to prevent hard bricks is to for go flashing firmware.
I'm running validus 7.1.2 on the original bootloader that was installed on MM.

Bro are you sure you followed my instruction? In twrp menu click on reboot>bootloader
Then it will boot the device in bootloader mode. And in the bootloader menu click on "start" using the power button. Then it will boot your phone. Everytime you reboot your phone do the same step. If you want to get rid of that thing you need to flash official rom via rsd lite

Rsdlite sucks, never flash any firmware with resdlite unless you know which lines need to be removed from the text file that tells rsdlite what to flash.
manually flashing firmware is IMO much safer and all you need to flash is the boot.img all the spareschunks and oem.img

It looks like there is a camera update and some AOD updates as well. I am a bit intrigued by the new AOD options.
Is it just me or the new Outfocus (portrait) mode is broken? After I take a picture it tells me that the portrait effect couldn't be applied because it couldn't find a face in the saved picture?
P.S. Also intrigued by the ned AOD options, and fade in animation.
Edit: Fixed it by clearing data and cache.

Impossible. Just reapply magisk and TWRP.
Anyone else have issues trying to update? I've tried twice on via the on phone update both times it downloaded but reboots to just error symbol and after manual reboot says verification problem. I've also tried twice via Bridge but it seems to fail in download phase.

Right. You can't install inferior partial image OTA, if you have TWRP.
Wait for the superior full image KDZ. Flash through LGUP, DL PARTITION, but UNcheck recovery partitions to keep TWRP. At least that's how all the other V30 do it, if we don't have flashable TWRP ROM.

OTA won't even install with TWRP.
And you need TWRP to get Magisk.
Why do people keep only talking about Magisk? TWRP is why you can't and don't want to install an OTA.

Why not?
You can use LGUP, to DL PARTITION.
You can Uncheck recovery partitions.
You can then boot to TWRP. (hardware dance buttons)
You can then flash Magisk, the no encryption and no Root Check files again.
Is there something I'm missing?
Well, for people who were silly enough to replace their Download mode with 2ND copy of TWRP, NO they can't do that. You need Download mode to flash KDZ via LGUP. But everyone else with H932 can do that.
