Bootloader unlock question - Moto Z2 Force Questions & Answers

Got my Z2 in T-Mobile version but dont have a sim yet, its still on the way. I have been trying all morning to unlock the boot loader but it tells me my phones not eligible. Does the sim card have to be in it to unlock bootloader??

Did you do the whole "get the code from the bootloader, then paste to moto website, then wait for emailed code" thing? At what point does it tell you the phone's not eligible?

Did you use the code scrubber on the website to get the proper format they're looking for? That can make a difference

I unlocked both of my z2's with out having a sim in them. There has to be something else you're missing, if you have a T-Mobile z2 force it should be unlockable. The only other thought is sometimes there are phones given away in promotions that can't be sim unlocked because their imei isn't in TMobile's system, maybe (if it's a "promotional phone") it's not in Motorola's system as a T-Mobile phone.
Also you should unlock the bootloader before you set it up since unlocking will erase everything including internal SD.

He's not doing anything wrong. I am having the same issue with my most recent Z2 replaced under warranty from T-Mobile. It says the device cannot be unlocked on Motorola's website. Just for the sake of trying, I used my other Z2's unlock key but it won't work as keys are obviously unique per phone. I think TMO is locking the bootloaders now

Make sure your not including any spaces in the unlock data and using copy/paste as the website is very specific. Even if you transpose 1 character it will be seen as an invalid code, hence the reason they have the nifty data scrubber so you can copy/paste everything and it will only transmit the code that is needed. It's worked for countless others.

I have used the data scruber, copied directly from command prompt and cleaned it, used notepad to clean it, verified, re-verified. I know I did it right on my end especially that this will be the 3rd Z2 that I unlock this month. I even tried the old trick of unlinking Motorola ID from the phone and even creating a new ID from another e-mail just so all my bases can be covered. After trying all of this, on different computers, browsers, I can say with certainty that I received a locked TMO Z2 Force.
There is a forum on Lenovo/motorola support that you can enter your unlock data and your getvar all so the motorola engineers can send you an unlock code manually. Apparently, some motorola can be shipped incorrectly coded.

Well that does sound frustrating that you had 2 other successful unlocks. Hopefully that link proves fruitful for you.
Hopefully it's not going to turn into an issue like sim unlocking "promotional" (give away) TMobile phones.

If that's the case I would just warranty exchange it again. For me, a phone is useless if it's locked.

Yep I figured this much. Must be a glitch on Motorola's website not recognizing the unlock data properly.

I got a replacement from T-MOBILE the other day. It has Oreo on it and everything. I had no problem unlocking the bootloader.

I bought this phone of ebay new never activated, still under warranty until October 2018.. would I be able to send it in for a replacement???

Well my BL is officially UNLOCKED even though my CID on the phone shows it not to be able to be unlocked, if your having trouble getting your unlock code from the online generator i'd suggest to head over to the Lenovo forum and let AlphaDog put in a request for the code.

When I did mine a few days ago, it behaved the same way until I actually registered it to my Moto account.

How did you do it???

My CID is 0x0015, but I still get the "Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking." message from Motorola. Did you put in the request for a code on the Motorola forums with AlphaDog?
PS. That poor guy AlphaDog seems a little overworked.

[Q]"Could not unlock network" - Arc S LT18i

HI guys,
I got an Xperia Arc S that was sim locked, so I contacted orange support and they gave me the code for unlocking, but when I entered the code it said "Could not unlock network", then I checked and the phone was hard locked..
I didn't enter any codes before orange gave me this one, and I bought it new, still its hard locked..
Is there any way that I can somehow undo the hard lock, so I can enter the unlock code??
Also does unlocking bootloader removes sim lock or hard lock??
Thx in advance
P.S.
It's 12W19 so the SETool doesn't work
unlocking bootloader DOESN'T removes sim lock or hard lock.

OK, but can hard lock somehow be removed or something so I can enter the code?
Bump.
Have the same problem with a BRAND NEW Sony Ericsson MK16a Xperia Pro from Fido in Canada.
I had earlier attempted a testpoint and it failed (only then did I find out about the post-12W14 ones not working with testpoint). Mine is 12W21.
I bought an unlock code, but it kept failing. I checked the unlock attempts counter in the hidden menu, and it showed 10 attempts, and that number decreased to 7 (I tried 3 times).
Brought the phone to the shop where I bought the code. They claim my phone is hardlocked!
Tried buying the code from another provider. Code is exactly the same as the one that didn't work.
Any idea what to do?

Was it supposed to be unlocked in the first place? I'd just take it back to the place where I bought it.

What do you mean by "supposed to be unlocked"? It was locked to begin with and I assumed I could just buy a code and unlock it like any other phone.
Before trying to use a bought code, I had tried a testpoint unlock which did not work due to this being a new security model.
Unfortunately I can't take it back to Fido because I'm past their 15 day return policy.
There is a Youtube video of an identical problem to mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aCxH2e47gY
I just want to verify if the new security MCUs are blocking the ability to use network unlock codes.

I don't really know how phones are being sold in Canada, but here in Finland you can just go and buy an unlocked phone. If it then turns out to be locked, of course they will have to unlock it for you.
Or, you can go and buy a phone with a subscription, in which case it may be locked to the carrier in question. YOYO if you switch carriers and still want to use the same phone.
I'm having the same problem with a Fido Xperia U, had 10 attempts initially, now down to 4 after going through an ebay seller mister unlock and now cellunlocker.net, both provided me the same unlock code but it doesn't seems to work.
Mine's a brand new phone, everything stock, I even tried to reflash the firmware with the Sony PC Companion even though I had the latest firmware already.
Same as this guy:

Bounty thread for internation (H850) port to H830 - Potential sim unlock method

This thread is a bounty to get a proper port of the H850 framework. This will allow us to enjoy all the feature of the H850 on our H830. Personally I am hoping this will make unlocking my G5 easier because we should be able to obtain our unlock codes (I already have mine) and do it the standard way. But understand when pledging that is only a theory and no guarantees.
If you pledge please pay up once it has been achieved.
As always this port must be something the average user can flash. Once it has been achieved we will discuss with the dev(s) on how/if they want to receive their donations.
So far the devs I know of are @autoprime and @Miustone
Pledges:
jkhan49 - $25
liushangrong - $50
Total: $75
Decided to sell my phone so I removed my pledge but I'll keep updating it for you. I got impatient after a month an a half.

If you had your TMobile LG G5 for a month and half, wouldn't TMobile unlock it for you? What happened?

You would think but even after FCC complaint and having T-Mobile office of the president call me saying they really want to unlock it but it isn't showing up on their system and they have tried every method they have... After spending 65 dollars in cellphone service and getting no where I caved. Good luck... Never worked out for me

The same thing happened to me and a lot of other people. My IMEI wasn't showing in their system so they said they couldn't unlock it. Don't listen to them. Lodge a complaint with the FCC saying they REFUSE to unlock your phone then contact Jennifer (information is below). I found it in another XDA thread. I got a call back in a few days (you have to be patient) from a Dianne who said they would escalate the issue and OVERRIDE it in the system to unlock it. Later I got a call back saying to retry the unlock app and it worked. You have to be past the 40 days of service though. I'm not sure why it didn't work for the other guy but you have to be persistent and don't take no for an answer. Be polite but persistent. By law they have to unlock it.

I used LGUP to reflash the stock ROM temporarily until it was unlocked because rooting it after the unlock does not remove the unlock SIM unlocks are permanent no matter what you flash to the device since the unlock is stored on a separate chip than the system. It shouldn't matter if your rooted but I would reflash stock to be sure. Also, I SIM unlocked to get AT&T but AT&T really sucked on it, I never got a single drop of LTE and I even went to the AT&T store and called their customer service many times and the phone was definitely set up right (APN, preferred tech, ect.). It may just be my area though. I'm back with T-Mobile now because it's much better than any other carrier in my area. I spoke with Diana at T-Mobile for the unlock.

Hello nkhater
Thanks for the tip .
It will not work because it will fail/blocked in TMOBILE SERVICE ?
I pictured the whole process like :
1) The "DEVICE UNLOCK" app , send the IMEI # (faked one) to the TMO server
2) The Server will check to see if the IMEI number is not blacklisted / etc
3) Since the number is Eligible to unlock (it has been unlocked before) - the server will send GOOD respond to the phone
4) The phone will be unlocked (for good)
5) then - I'll retrieve the original IMEI to the phone.
In what stage do you think - the process will fail ?

I figured that'd be the case. Thanks. First time I've had to obtain one and actually got it. Their customer support is not so great. They acted like I was asking for the impossible and continued to tell me it is unlocked. I said dude it says it is locked to you! I know the bootloader is I guess nearly impossible to unlock. Apparently only dev editions can be unlocked. Surely they have the tools do such. Not sure if I'll get a Motorola again. It's basically owning something you don't fully own.

I did have a little Moto X XT1060 I think? I think it might have been a dev edition. Was a pretty good phone. Most of those (non carrier branded) won't be sold in retail stores I wouldn't imagine so I guess you have to buy online? I have purchased unlocked phones on Ebay. I was just in a jam for this one and got it from Wal-Mart and on top of that it had a sorry 14-day return policy. That is asinine.

nah dude, unless you can hack the bootloader, you're pretty much stuck there. The problem is the key is generated by a program on their end, so unless you get access to this program( literally impossible) or hack the bootloader you can't access it. Its like if they gave you a pad lock without the key. You would have to look through the lock mechanism and trick it into opening, but there is probably some issues along if you can even achieve this

Hi
so finally att sent me an unlock code.
i can't however unlock the bootloader. not even via https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-b where if i inspect the page and make the "get my code" button appear it drops me to a 404 otherwise i copypaste the requested code (including #s) it says "Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking." the phone has att logo on it and at boot the att logo pops up too. but why can i put in now other sim, but can't upload another firmware? makes no sense.
is there a way to unlock bootloader somehow nowadays?
the phone also powers up to fastboot which i can't seem to fix either.
thanks
no test point? no "hack"? i'm stuck with att branded software? what a garbage...

Nothing out of the ordinary. Loaded os WiFi on, no sim , dev options enabled oem unlocking then fastboot commands. It does in my opinion disprove that it's because of the imei not being 99 though

My only issue is, I don't see that it's a 35 imei. Pics don't show it. Of course. No need for full imei, but definitely would love to see that it is a Verizon model. I know my pixel 3 is a Verizon one, and when I got it, before I even popped my sim in, I was unable to even toggle the switch. They didn't have one pre-installed in this one, I put my sim from my old phone in after it was still greyed. Had it on my wife's Wi-Fi for 30 Min before giving up
I get that and if you want private message me I'll give you my number and send whatever needed to unlock these if it's here.

What country are you in? I know that some devices in Europe can be unlocked after a certain period of time, I think 6 months or after you've paid off the contract. Something along those lines. Perhaps the IMEI are different outside the US? Nonetheless, did you buy it as a Verizon branded device either from Best Buy, Google or Verizon? If you bought it from Verizon then I'd say you got lucky as mentioned above. But suffice it to say you have done nothing that hasn't been tried hundreds of times.
USA, and I agree about it probably being luck of the draw however it is a proof of concept that it can be done. This is a Verizon branded device. Was a warranty but in store and still in the sealed box without a sim in it.
My personal feeling is there's a fastboot command that is fastboot oem rma that sets the trigger for it. They have to be able to unlock them during the RMA process for repairs right?

Where did you buy it? What do you mean by it was "a warranty"? In store sealed without a sim is extremely unusual if it was a brand new device. They all come with a Verizon sim in them afaik.
As for the fastboot rma commands, it's not necessarily the way they would do it. They could whitelist the IMEI temporarily, fastboot a factory image, then blacklist it again. Perhaps they forgot to blacklist yours. I'd say *very* lucky.
400 hours on the line with Verizon/Google I finally told them to give me a new one under warranty 5th one for various reasons and my final warranty according to them. I honestly don't think it was luck considering I even got a letter from corporate office (vzw) to cease and desist my contact with them regarding the bootloader they don't like it when you know their policies better then them and call them out for quoting policies out of thin air.
Hmm.. 400 hours? Might be time to close this thread. Sounds like a bunch of bull **** to me. Consider me trolled.

They have to be able to unlock them during the RMA process for repairs right?

a proof of concept aka POC would mean you have process to unlock the bootloader which in this case you dont. You dont have any steps for anyone to replicate it nor do you know exactly how it was possible which means no poc can exist.
just my 2 cents of course lol
Proof of trolled more like
Sounds like a jcbizsnatch kind of story.

Bootloader won't unlock!

I purchased a Motorola Moto G power directly from the Google site and paid full price but every time I type in my bootloader unlock key it says my device is ineligible. Does it have to be a certain amount of days after I purchased it for it to be eligible? I have tried it numerous times and it just will not work. Can anyone please offer some advice? It's model number XT2041-4. I have had this device for at least a couple of months. Someone has some info to offer that would be great. Motorola hasn't even updated their page because the newest models it shows is the G7 series.

Do you type the key right? If so, some phones can't be unlocked, you have to wait to Motorola update the page. Do you put the right region page for your phone?

Yes I have went through at least 5 times and wrote down twice so I know the unlock key is right. It might be that I owe money still. I got on a deal for $150 that being hundred dollars off the regular price but then I hardly used it and money got tight so I canceled service trying to save money and my dumbass canceled it 7 days too early and I lost out on my promo discount of $100 so actually I still owe $96. That could be what's holding it back. And plus Motorola needs to update their page. I'll wait till that last payment comes out and then try it again. Actually I think the payment came out today.

I don't know that you owing Google Fi money would stop the unlock. I unlocked mine the day I got it, so there is no way for them to know if I'm going to live up to the contract or not.
Are you having trouble with the first part where you enter your code into Motorola's website or the second piece where you enter the code you got from the email into the fastboot command?
1. If it's the website, be sure you copy all of the lines ( I think it was 4) together into one line on the website. I copied all of it into Notepad and did a Ctrl + H to find and replace the "(bootloader) " at the begging of each line with nothing. Then I went through and deleted the line breaks to get one massive string. Entering that in got the site to work.
2. If you're having trouble when you send the unlock token via the fastboot command, there is a step missing from Motorola's website. On the phone go to Settings> About > Click the build number 7 times to enable developer options. Go to Developer Options> toggle on Enable OEM Unlocking > reboot back into the bootloader. Now the fastboot command will work.

After I get all four lines entered and then I go to the Motorola website that's when it says my device is not capable of being unlocked. And if you go to their page the newest phone they got is from the Moto G7 series and I have a Moto g power. So it's not even giving me an unlock token. I was sure it could be unlocked because it the unlocked model. It'll work on any carrier.

That is super strange. The Moto G Power from Google Fi should absolutely be unlockable. I did it with mine on Saturday. I see where you're talking about it only going up the the g7.
This is the link I used. I don't know if it's the same one you are using.

Yeah that's the same site I'm going to. I don't know why it's taking them so long to update their page because the g9 series is about to come out.

This may sound whack but trying the url for the Motorola site with any browser besides Chrome might fix it... Did mine. But still Motorola won't give me a code either.
When I first got my G7 power Canadian retail version, I went to one of the motorolla sites to unlock it and I got the same error and I did not understand why. Then I found a second motorolla site (i just forgot if first I went to a global one and then their main one or vice-versa) but if you can find another site that offers the same thing try that, because when I did it on that second motorolla page which looked pretty much the same although slightly different it then worked.
So if you've been trying at the international site, try the US site. Not sure if there are other ones, and I do not remember which one worked and didnt for me.
So with a verizon version im screwed right? I dont really care about a custom rom at the moment but would like the have the retail US 11.0 firmware and root. Is this possible? If not I'm going to try to return it. I bought it on ebay and the seller didn't list it as the Verizon version or I wouldnt have bought it.
