New - Moto Z2 Force Questions & Answers

I just got this phone due to my Samsung S7 edge failure and it was only option with out having to pay 260 $ due on Samsung. Otherwise it was good deal receiving another 8.50 $ credit monthly . My only issue is been Verizon and development dead due to that . So no root and no roms , any chance for future ? Seems this phone is very close to pixel ......so I am wondering......

No one knows how to root the locked bootloader and Verizon will never allow it. Best option is a sprint version.. Sim unlock then root. I swear u only see how fantastic this fone is when rooted and adblock with adaway.

Hi,
After a quick search on Google, the first results page points to www.unlockunit.com, while on the second page I've also found www.safeunlockcode.com. I couldn't find the prices for the latter, but the first company seems to have some pretty accessible fees.

Unlock Unit could not help me and had to refund my payment. They required me to upload a video of proof that the code they provided didn't work. It seems the phone can only be unlocked with the Unlock app that comes pre-installed, at least for now. T-Mobile hasn't even been able to help me unlock it yet.
you do know that T-Mobile offers you x amount of days to unlock you phone right? (Device unlock) you should have an icon for it.
Rep told me today that they are only allowing unlock for business customers and long standing regular customers. (2+ year active account) If you don't qualify for this, she said the earliest people will be able to submit for an unlock is 20 days - after the buyers remorse period. Still doesn't make sense to me as that only locks me to the device and not the service.

I see what you are saying. I have been with them for 10 years so I see where I wouldn't have that issue. Making you wait the 20 days does not make sense seeing that you are tied to the phone anyways or maybe because people may try to flip the it for $? I am sure they have their reasons. I would wait if you are not in a big rush.
Seems like those of us who got the phone to immediately use on AT&T are at a painful time. I haven't been able to use my edge as my primary device because of the unlock struggle. Now I can open a business line with tmobile no problem and tmobile has wideband in my area, it's just that for the same $55 I'd pay them for unlimited everything, I get better coverage with cricket and get 20GB (which I'm grandfathered) which feels like unlimited because I use 10GB under super heavy usage.

Maybe its only matter of time that the people of xdadevelopers came up with an unlock option by software.
Hope it doesn' t take long.

Just unlock my tmob s6 edge with theunlockpros.com just take like 15 minutes, cost like 25 dollars you have to download a software then a guy connects to your computer and will guide you all the process to unlock your phone, it helps if you already rooted with pingpong.

Can the bootloader on an Unlocked att Note 4 be unlocked

Hi,
I know there is no way to unlock the bootloader on an att Note 4, but if ATT unlocks it would it become an International Version and can the bootloader be unlocked? Sorry if this is a dumb question.
Young fool.... only now do you realize the power of evil AT&T produces.
Now Rosachin, you will die.
(In all realness, no of course not. ATT ain't that nice nor will it ever be. You can unlock the phone in terms of cellular network but that's it.)
I cant believe I didnt come here before I bought 2 brand new at&t Note 4's Unlocked. What an idiot I am. Just never had a at&t and didnt think anything of it because everytime I have wanted to root and mod my previous phones, I never had a problem.. I never had at&t though.. uhhgg. maybe by the time I just cant stand the stock rom, they will unlock the bootloader? I dont know if that's how it works...
Oh well, sad man here.

Well, I just sent a return request for one of the note 4's. AND just bought a USED sm910T from ebay.
So, instead of me getting a brand new AT&T UNMODDABLE note 4, I will be getting a used but in great condition T-Mobile note 4.
And if I can get out of the restocking fees from the return, I will come out 50 bucks ahead. Cool.
The other new note 4 went to my daughter for xmas, and she already broke the screen. DOH!!
I lucked out this time I guess.
Cheers all.

Yeah man, I'ved used At&t for years. Some phones still ended up rooting and unlocked (Sky-Rocket, LG E970, and Note II) this is the 1st phone I purchased that couldn't be rooted to install ROMs and Mods. Very annoyed but glad to know after this experience we know not to buy from At&t directly. Either buy unlocked form Swappa, eBay or Amazon or know that you will be limited when you buy from carrier. In the mean time if you really want out, pay the bill so its clear for selling, and sell it online or in person. Also you can wait it out until the next upgrade.

Never again for me, not directly from AT&T & maybe not Samsung. [AT&T-Captivate, and VZ-Note2..rooted and other ROM'd but now ]. Question: what aspect of the hardware allows a carrier's specific bands of LTE to function? Or is it that the hardware is fully "plastic", capable of any LTE banding given the software[albeit locked] and SIM[mine unlocked] ? There are multiple Note4's. AT&Ts also runs UMTS and GSM. T's? Verizon's also runs its EV-DO. Perhaps these 2G, and 3G aspects become irrelevant and the 4G/LTE buildout completes, but the question remains over capability on carrier specific LTE bands.
With my SIM unlocked Note4 I used a VODA SIM this summer in Italy, but don't recall whether I had access to LTE , or evn which data mode functioned.
Ok, I hope I don't get in trouble for asking this here. . I tried to search but I'm not real good on this phone yet. . That's no excuse, I know. ..
Anyway, I received my T-Mobile Note 4 today and I want to root it right away as I am an owner of titanium backup and rom toolbox.
I am wondering if there is an easy way to root my device without installing a custom kernel AND not require a pc?
If I have to use a custom kernel, which one is the most stable?
My device specs are
SM-N910T3
Android 5.1.1
LMY47X.N910T3UVU1DOK2
KNOX 2.4.1
I have data turned off on my phone and disabled data from my carrier. I use WiFi and no data. .
Again I'm sorry for asking this but it's been a real long time since I have installed custom anything and my pc blue screens randomly so I'm afraid to try rooting my phone that way.
Please, step by step, easy tutorial or a link to where I need to go?
Thanks a bunch.

The real reason carriers lock bootloaders (just remove the space after www and http)
http s://www .youtube.com/watch?v=gpVocvREboo&list=UURAxVOVt3sasdcxW343eg_A&app=desktop
[email protected] the space. Ironically....yeah i will remove the space so you can suffer clicking on the link on your phone...
Since we are on the subject of bootloaders. It's been a while since I flashed a custom rom on a phone. But from what I remember, isn't the bootloader these pictures that I attached? I took pictures on my AT&T Note 4.
Thanks
Yes i have read the whole thing.
Ok, to cut a long story short;
i bought a note 4 on an online australian shop for $470 (really hard without a job)
Anyway, they noted that their phones are from GENUINE Suppliers and i got a Note 4 UNLOCKED from, you guessed it. AT&T.
Now i wasnt too fussed. I was happy i got a note 4 that wasnt a chinese brick phone, since it technically was refurbished from their Hong Kong Warehouse. Anyways
After like...idk 2 months? approx? i decided i wanna root it. Guess what?! BOOTLOADER. WHAT THE ***T!!
Anyway, i spoke to some people, one said he hasnt rooted a phone passed gen 6. and the other person said 'no cant root. Bootloader is locked and no way to bypass.'
Soo im wondering if its possible to root the phone without removing bootloader? I dont restart my phone much and the whole bootloader doesnt worry me so im just curious if i can chuck a stock rom on without worrying about the bootloader.
Some background info:
I am Australian, therefore my phone is running under Australian networks (Boost, Lyca, Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, etc)
It is filled with unwanted, unnecessary AT&T bloatware.

Ripping encrypted DVDs (or DVDs locked to a region) = unlocked
PlayStation 3 = reverse engineered
iPhone = jailbroken
Why isn't the AT&T Note4 unlocked yet? Would offering a bounty help? Is it impossible to unlock? Is it a matter of time? Is it a matter of throwing lots of computation power against the lock?
What will finally get the AT&T Note4 unlocked?

Is there no bounty offered? If each ATT Note4 owner chips in a few dollars, we could raise a bounty of several hundred dollars. Then some tech-wiz can take much time trying to unlock the bootloader.
Anybody else willing to contribute to a bounty?

Using AT&T sim card on Verizon Pixel will stop system updates ,etc ?

Im desperate to get rid of my AT&T Note 7 and got approved for a Best Buy credit card tonight . Can buy the Verizon version Thursday ,however several things scare me ....
1) using another carrier sim will stop the phone getting all software updates ?
2) I don't want anything with Verizon on the phone , rumor has it only has 3 apps from Verizon is uninstallable. Is this it ?
3)AT&T LTE , should still work like an AT&T phone ?
I will look carefully at the display model before making my purchase . If anyone has any input would help ,thank you .

I work for Verizon and all our phones (newer) are unlocked. Updates won't be blocked and the three apps can be uninstalled. Only thing is the phone has to start with a Verizon SIM card to get activated. After that you can put in a att sim and everything will work just fine. Enjoy your pixel, I know I will.
Sorry 2 more questions , and thank you for this info .
1)do you think at&t hd (VoltE) voice will work with it ?
2)heard that the phone will constantly try to look for CDMA network and could cause problems (battery) . AT&T is GSM network . Is this true ?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-T817A using Tapatalk
No, it should the same as if you've bought it from the google store. All Verizon iPhones function the same as if you bought it from Apple. Should hold true for google pixels as well. I'm basing this on history and not fact. Just keep your reciept. You'll have plenty of time to make sure everything works.
I read somewhere that the 3 apps install based on the Sim you start with. Meaning, on first boot if you have a Verizon Sim you'll get those 3 apps. If you start with att you won't get any auto installed apps. I don't remember where I read this last week but I do know that was the trick to not having bloat on the nexus 6 from Verizon. The pixel is unlocked (not bootloader unlocked from what I hear) so it should work on any carrier without issues. It has the radios to do so.

Any Update on this?

Telus Pixel XL Bootloader unlock status?

Does anyone know if the Telus sold Pixel XL is bootloader unlocked? Not that I want to start messing around right away, but I consider this a 2 year + investment, and once the 1 year warranty is up, I like having options.
I checked the Model number of the demo phone at the local Telus store this morning and it is: G-2PW2100 . I'm not sure that helps directly as from what I can find, that is the US play store and Verizon specific model number.
Is anyone on Telus and been able to unlock the bootloader the "easy" way? I am worried about a future OS update disabling the Verizon bootloader unlocks if they are also required for the Telus model.
Thanks in advance.
Hy bro,
I unlocked mine with the dePixel8 tool. It worked like a charm and i rooted with chainfire boot to root img and it worked.
If you have questions just ask me!
I have the Verizon model and used the dePixel8 tool as soon as I got it. The OTA that is expected to block it isn't expected until Nov 7 or so. So why not use the verizon method if the easy way doesn't work?
Also i tested and i was able to lock it back and unlocked it After with the command oem unlock no need for dePixel8 so i assume that when you relock it it lock with Google lock not telus lock

So you have a Telus phone and it did require the dePixel8 method?
This is going to be a corporate phone so I don't know that I can get it ahead of the Nov 7th OTA with the red tape involved. Also, I don't necessarily want to unlock it now, I just want to know my options going forward.
Thanks for the reply!
I also have a telus corpo pixel XL and i needed dePixel8. If you dont unlock it before the ota i think you Will need another way to unlock the bootloader.

Thanks for confirming, this is exactly what I wanted to know, and also exactly what I feared.
I'll have to wait it out a bit and see if dePixel8 unlock, or some variation, still works after the November update.
All the best, I'm off to the Moto Z forums to see what is up over there as a possible alternative
Would the Nov 7 OTA be applied automatically to a new phone? Wouldn't you still have to accept the OTA once the phone is activated? I am just wondering, I am in the exact same corporate situation as you (wanting to replace my LG G5, which has sadly gone unrooted thus far).

Good question. I'm worried that by the time I got my Pixel XL it might come with the update pre-applied (it could take a while around here). Then I'd be waiting/wondering if there would be another unlock available and how persistent that would be etc. I guess I was hoping for the play store version from Telus, where I could run it stock for a while, possibly until the warranty is up, and then easily unlock and start messing.
After exploring all the options available from Telus I am genuinely disappointed that nothing they offer has reasonable aftermarket ROM support. The Pixel line was my last hope, but with this bootloader lock thing I'm not sure I want to fight that battle.
Maybe I can convince work to get me a ZTE Axon 7 or Oneplus 3.
Good luck
I can say from my experience with the G5, that with the current versions of Android, being able to bypass the protections to root/TWRP is not guaranteed by any means. The problem with the G5 was that people gave up - the scene died fairly quickly, and anyone out there who might have the skills to crack it has moved on. For the Pixel, I am fairly certain that there will always be people who are ready (and able) to take on the challenge of bypassing the protections... or, maybe I just haven't learned my lesson yet.

Any ETA on when you think you might get the phone? I doubt even if you got it in December, if it would have the OTA pre-applied.

Yeah, possibly depending on their stock levels it might still be the older OS I suppose.
Regardless, I'm just tired of fighting every step of the way for a device that presumably we (me or the company) owns. It's frustrating, and I'm not even sure what they are protecting? It's not like bootloader unlock would carrier unlock it, or even un-obligate us from the device subsidy given that Canada has a device blacklist they could put it on if we bailed.
If I were a personal customer, I would be getting an unlocked device and exercising my right to change carriers, that's for sure.
Thanks
The carriers don't want you to be able to break the phone, and then try to have it repaired on warranty. Considering that their recommended solution to pretty much every problem is a factory reset, they can't have you messing with the system partition.

Wait, so there is an OTA coming from Telus that'll make it harder to unlock the bootloader?
Not from telus but from google. The exploit used un depixel8 Will surely be fixed in the next update
That is crappy news, I am currently waiting for my Telus Pixel XL to arrive through the ambassador program and was NOT expecting it to be the Verizon style one with the locked bootloader. Sure hope it arrives without the update or else I might have to go through the Google store. Can't take the chance of having a locked bootloader as it defeats the whole purpose for me and my love of custom roms.

Sure hope it arrives without the update or else I might have to go through the Google store. Can't take the chance of having a locked bootloader as it defeats the whole purpose for me and my love of custom roms.

Exactly. Please let us know which version you get, and if it is updated or not.
Thanks

Will do. I might just go straight to bootloader mode and depixel8 when I get it to make sure I don't accidentally get an update (it better not be updated already)

Awesome plan - I will have my Pixel XL in 2-3 days and will likely try the same, and will post my specs here after I do. I'm sure any nefarious OTA could easily be blocked at first boot if necessary though, just start the phone with no SIM and don't connect to wifi.
Seriously guys, I don't know much about Google's supply lines, but there has to be at least a couple weeks before a phone with the latest OS preloaded can make it into your hands - keep in mind that you are buying this phone from a Telus distributor, which only compounds that time. That's why I am buying my phone now.
Good news from depixel8 developers - it still works after update

Unlocking Question

I bought a tmobile z2 Force Locked to Tmobile. I am having trouble getting it unlocked. Tmobile even goes as far as to tell me the IMEI doesn't show up in their database. Is there a way for me to unlock it myself through some kind of software mod? I have been out of the android root scene since I got rid of my Nexus 6 a couple years ago. Any help would be appreciated.
T-Mobile uses a server based unlock system and can only be unlocked via the device unlock app.
If you did not buy the device directly from them, the phone is not whitelisted with the unlock server. You'll need to keep contacting support until you reach a rep that is familiar with that aspect of their systems.

If I were to root the device and apply a custom ROM would the unlock app restriction still apply? And if I have no luck with Tmobile directly how reliable are online unlocking services? Most want $60 or so to unlock a device with the app installed like mine has.
Rooting will not unlock because this is server based. Using a third party would work if the phone was in the database, but third-parties do not have the ability to add your imei to the database to allow for an unlock. Only T-Mobile can do that, and as I said you'll need to keep contacting support until you find a rep that knows how it works.

Alright thanks again for the input. As I said I have been away from the root and modding scene for a while and not sure what is capable of being modified on phones anymore. This app for instance is a new thing to me.
Sure thing. They have their unlock system, umm, locked down pretty good. Most of the unlock companies will tell you their service will only work if the device is recognized by the app, beware of any that say they can work around that restriction.
yeah this kinda **** is why I usually buy unlocked devices but I found a deal on the Z2 Force for $350 on amazon. I should have done some research before i bought it though. My wife needed an upgrade from her gen2 Moto x in a bad way though. guess I got a fight with tmobile ahead of me.

The z2 force is only $375 from T-Mobile, and if bought out right they do unlock it (if you follow their rules for unlocking). The Amazon one might not be on TMobiles unlock servers for a reason (?)
Sent from my Moto Z (2) using XDA Labs
Yeah I know the one @ tmobile is 375 but none of them near me have it in stock. There is no reason the one I have can't be used. I just have to fight to get it on their servers whitelist I guess. I have confirmed it works by using a sim card from a friend since I started this thread. maybe now that it was used on their servers even briefly the IMEI is in their system and I will have a little more luck tomorrow.
