Prime Tether looks like it's for 5.x.x if I'm not mistaken.
Searched the android development section and didn't see any mention of this.
On my vs985 it was easy, just flashed a zip.
Anyone know a way that would work on MM or any custom roms?
Thanks
Not sure really since WiFi is broken on my G3.
However, I'm using good ole WiFi Tether Router on my Samsung Galaxy Light. As a hotspot for Amazon Fire TV Stick. Far as I can tell it's working but because I use it so infrequently I'm not 100% sure.
I guess what I need to do is when I'm at home have my other phone only use WiFi with the Samsung as hotspot. Then I'll be able to see if it really works.

Thanks, but I can get hotspot and tether working, that's not the problem, it's the 10GB Limit that T-mobile tries to restrict you to

With root Wifi Tether Router works fine on Lollipop. I couldn't get it to work with 30D Marshmallow although author claims many people using it. A brief test with crDroid (Oreo 8.1) showed that it seems to work ok there, but I couldn't get 5ghz WiFi to work on Oreo so went back to Marshmallow.

I meant using something like WiFi Tether Router is supposed to hide the fact that you're tethering. That's its purpose. In theory it's supposed to look like you're using normal data.

Looks like the app didn't do its job. Spent the night tethering to a laptop while I tried to un-(soft)brick a new phone. Then a notice popped up from T-Mobile that I was close to reaching my 10GB limit. Ach and grumble grumble. Not good.
Will be investigating other ways to see if I can beat TMO.

You have unlimited data with a 10GB tether limit right? If you have a 10GB overall data limit there is nothing you can do as all data is metered.
With stock roms you have no control over how they interact with the carrier when you attempt to activate tethering. With custom roms you can avoid any carrier trickery and the carrier has to rely on TTL hints or deep packet inspection to detect tethering and from my experience Tmo doesn't normally do deep packet inspection.
Try the TTL Editor (Kirn Gill) app from Google Play.

Thanks @petergunn666. I'll give TTL Editor a look.
The phone I'm using as a hotspot is my old Samsung Galaxy Light running CM12, btw.
@cory733,
Y'know, I mentioned I used WiFi Tether Router on my Galaxy Light to hide the tethering. Mentioned it didn't work one day and I used up most of the data. Probably not set up quite right.
Last week though, it worked as expected. Tethered to my Amazon Fire TV Stick from about 9pm to 6am.
Checked data usage afterward. 0MB used of hotspot data. Checked again a few days later to verify.
The amount of data sent/used shown in WTR's main screen closely matched amount of normal data reported by TMO.
I sort of remember the app's data stats not looking right when I almost used up my hotspot data before (showing only a few hundred MB of data). Probably stopped working but I didn't know it.
Another day off. I'll do some hotspotting tonight and see how it goes. This time I'll keep an eye on the app, too.
EDIT: Using fast.metropcs.com for tethering.

I tried this on my D851 but doesn't seem to hide hotspot from T-Mobile. I used default settings for TTL Editor and checked apply to all network interfaces. What settings did you use?
I'm on an 8.1 LOS ROM, with systemless Magisk and systemless BusyBox. I'm not sure if that matters

I thought Prime Tether was only for 10C, 10M or 10R?
TTL was the solution, but not on the phone itself, had to set it in windows registry editor.
All the info is in the comment section of this page:
https://www.groovypost.com/howto/hide-data-usage-get-truly-unlimited-tethering-tmobile-one/
Works for straighttalk also
Also changed the build prop net tether non-provision and tether dun limit settings just to be safe.
pda net also worked for me on straighttalk (tmobile sim) but since it's a paid app, it cuts you off after a certain amount of usage unless you buy.

Hi
I want to buy a cheap old phone just to make it my home unlimited hotspot. I have an extra Tmobile sim card to use. As you said the firmware of the phone might matter. so what kind of device and firmware you suggest? Also please send me the download link to that Zip file and guide on how to flash it.
Thank you very much in advance

Wifi Tether (Free) by Müller, Lemons, Buxton (apparently I'm a noob and can't post links so go find it yourself)
After installing it, set the device mode to the Galaxy S3 and presto, it works. My iPad sees it, connects, and works like a champ. Only catches are you gotta root and be careful with ATT snooping your data since they will try to make you pay more for tethering.
First thing that I am going to do today when my phone arrives is to install Foxfi. No root required

I tried foxfi too. It never enabled wifi tethering. It would just sit there saying it was enabling but never would.

The North American ATT version does not have a hotspot button in that drop down menu. Also, because it's ATT you have to pay extra for tethering. The solution I listed above is for those that want to run the hotspot without paying ATT extra to do it.
And an update on Foxfi: Apparently our phone and the SG3 use similar chipsets for network connectivity. Unfortunately, the latest version of Foxfi does not work with the SG3 or our phone for mobile hotspot. You can use the bluetooth DUN instead. Hopefully they will put out an update to add the right drivers.

Well I can say that none of these options work on the sprint varient, as I've tried Wifi tether for root, barnacle, and FoxFi, and all show enabled, but I can't find the device to connect to it. So if it really is enabled, I can't see the SSID. I havn't tried to manually connect to the SSID, but I have run all tethering apps with SSID broadcast on, so I should be able to see it...
Never mind got it working using Generic (wlan0) ICS/JB setting...
Please explain, i am using pdanet on mine with sprint via usb tether . I don't want to root at this time but want to get hotspot free.
1 thing I've found with USB tether is that it only works at half speed of what I get for speed the galaxy s3 that I had prior would get full Speed. Also when connected to my laptop via USB I get hey message stating slow battery charge
Anyone know what I can do to increase speed through the USB cable

The LG Optimus G E971/E973 (which is what this forum is for, NOT AT&T or Sprint) supports WiFi hotspots by default. There is an option to enable and use this natively in the settings application.

^ ya it doesn't work if you don't have tethering enabled on your data plan
most of the new new plans have tethering enabled is a different thing
this thread is for enabling tethering without carrier restrictions
for ex rogers doesnt allow tethering on north american one rate plans
Works thanks

Has anyone been able to get the 'WiFi tether for Root Users' or TrevE Mod working in Cyanogenmod 10.1.2 or any AOSP ROM on the SGH-T999? I ask because I haven't. I reached my 500mb cap for this billing cycle and want to maybe prevent that from happening in the future, or at least get it working.

What you are attempting to do is not possible? They should be able to measure the amount of data that goes through your phone, because it can be done on their end, so there would be nothing for you to exploit. My understanding of the tethering hacks were that they allowed you to tether if you didn't have the tethering provision on your account (whether you did not pay for it, or are unlimited, and they don't give you the option). I've seen the hacks that claim to be able to bypass the data caps, but unsure why it would be implemented in such a way that anyone could exploit it.

Well of course they can watch my data use, but whether or not I'm tethering with that data is another thing. I was able to use about a gig and a half last billing cycle on their unlimited plan, by just using TrevE mod (no vpn app) on Touchwiz based roms and only about 300mb showed in the tmo my account app.
I was under the impression from what I've read that apps like TrevE mod can give you more access untell they put the kibosh on you, and if you go though a VPN you can use it all you want cause all of the network traffic is going though the VPN app not Windows and Chrome etc. which they look for.
I'm mainly wondering if that app 'WiFi Tether For Root Users/TrevE mod' has worked at all in AOSP, even 4.1.x.
I think T-Mobile has improved their detection and now know when you're using those apps or mods. Lately everyone seems to be reporting that they do not work.
As to whether or not you could use em in cm, I doubt it. If you didn't see it say so in the op and it wasn't reported working by others posting in the thread, it's safe to say it doesn't.
Did you search and read through the thread?

I haven't seen tethering or hotspot mentioned at all in any T999 AOSP op i've looked at which is discouraging. For CM10.1 people seem to only talk about the the included tether.
As for 'WiFi Tether for Root Users' its so widely used any thread I look at is device specific most of the time, and/or for that devices stock rom. But there are so many settings in there though I thought maybe someone got it working.
If they did they would have posted it in the mods thread if anywhere. But if it can't be done you could almost certainly find that info in the same thread.

I am running CM10, rooted on a SGH-T999. Following the forums I downloaded Hotspot Shield as the post stated it was the only shield (VPN or otherwise) that would work with TreveE-Mod Wifi-Tether. Sadly, I found that using Hotspot Shield really slowed down my connection to a crawl and also caused problems using tether to stream Netflix, Hulu+. etc. I did find another VPN app that worked (Hideninja VPN) but it also slowed me down tremendously and caused issues with nationwide streaming copyright protections on Netflix, etc. as well. I do pay the $30 for T-Mob's unlimited albeit shackled internet package.
I have a newer Dell laptop running WIN8 and have not tested this on any other version of Windows but:
My SGH-T999, CM10 and TreveE-Mod all work together flawlessly to give me a T-Mob upsell to WiFi hotspot message in my browser whether I change the User Agent or not. :crying::crying::crying:
Then I installed UltraSurf VPN on my laptop and my tethered speeds are AWESOME!! WITHOUT having to change my User Agent settings.
No need for Hotspot Shield or HideNinja.... no VPN setup on my phone, just UltraSurf on my puter and the tortoise has turned into a hare!

BAD ASS G3
The Wifi Tether App now only works with HTTPS sites and no other ones.
You can try PDAnet/FoxFi, but I haven't used those and I'm not too sure if they work on the G3 on Tmo's network or not.
Those two apps might work, as you do not need root to use them.
You can try autoprime's tether mod, but you need to be rooted to use it. Thread here.

Check out the Prime Tether MOD in the: T-Mobile G3 Android Development forum. this helped me, but it doesn't work on the new update (D85110m) That's all I can say just in-case the MAN is watchin' LOL
UPDATE
So a little update if anyone else needed the info, FoxFi works i had to buy the key for 7.99 but it was worth it. It still uses up your data but it doesn't count toward your tethering usage limit. Good day.
Actually the Prime Tether MOD works on both updates and it does bypass your tether limit.
Just to test my TMobile connection I did 128GB last month with no problems.
The only way I've been able to bypass data caps on any device is to use VPN. Since the data is being encrypted they can't see if its data from the phone or a tethered device, I've been doing this over 2 years and have never hit a data cap.

Thus has nothing to do with what ROM you're running; since so many people are abusing the service (ie. forgoing home internet and using their phones to tether to), carriers found a different means to see who is tethering, and are cracking down in them.

After tinkering around, I found a workaround that is working for me so far so I decided to post. I am on insane hybrid and obviously rooted.
Installed newest google tether app (experimental version): https://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wifi_tether_v3_4-experimental1.apk
- Left it as unsecured but enabled the access control
- Changed setup method to WEXT (ad-hoc) and started tether.
Streaming, downloading, Dropbox are all now syncing on my computer and I have full speeds again after being throttled. To browse with chrome, I installed the extension "user-agent switcher" and changed to "Samsung Galaxy S3".
I am curiuos if this works for anyone else, or if anyone has found an easier fix. Thanks.
hi everyone. did a search, didnt find what i was looking for. i've been using my wifi hotspot so much that i use up my date half way before the month ends every month. and my carrier doesnt have an option to increase hotspot data. so i decided to root my phone and try the wifi tether apps that are available in the play store. they work, but not as good as the stock wifi hotspot that my phone comes with. it doesnt even compare. is there an app that i dont know about or rom that works as good as the stock wifi hotspot on my phone? also the usb tether works, i have no issues with that. the problem is, i wanna use the wifi for my smart tv and xbox one, but they dont support the usb tether that i'm using with foxfi. thanks in advance. i'm using nexus 5x android 7.0 build n5d91L.
I dont know if im right, but PureNexus ROM has unlocked WIFI Hotspot. Im on this ROM but i cant test it for You (unlimited data on hotspot).

I see you mentioned a November build installed in your device. If you want to try PureNexus, be aware that ROM uses the December build which is based on official Android 7.1.1 and not 7.0 like the one you mentioned. You would need to update your bootloader, radio and vendor accordingly to avoid issues with that ROM. How-tos are everywhere, including in that thread (use Search).
I don't quite understand your original problem, since your WiFi hotspot tethering was working with the built in app. Do you have limited tethering but otherwise unlimited data? Did the PureNexus ROM hide this tether usage somehow?
I'm having this same issue, my phone won't even turn hotspot on with FoxFi. Its a brand new phone but decided to go ahead and root it.
Trying to find an app or build.prop line that will re-enable hotspot on Android 5.1.1.
