Hi All,
I am currently rooted via Magisk with TWRP installed. I am unable to install the Feb OTA update because of this mostly. I am planning to get stock recovery while keeping the root - question is if I do this via the AIO tool <https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/development/tool-tool-one-driversunlocktwrpfactory-t3730226> - will i lose all my data?
Thanks,
J2

If you want to take the ota, you need to be unrooted, and on stock recovery. You won't lose your data if your careful with the toolkit.

Thanks Badger! For some reason I thought systemless root works with OTA.

It used to, but not so much on this phone. Friendly advice for ya, learn how to flash factory images, and ditch the OTA's. Much quicker, and less room for error that side loading or waiting on OTA's. Just my opinion my friend ?

Hi badger,
If you are referring to steps laid out here - https://developers.google.com/android/images, then I can do it. Won't it still require me to be unrooted?
I am not that Tech agnostic - so if I am wrong, can you refer me to a thread where this is outlined. My only thing is that I get latest patches and still get to keep root without losing data
Thanks,
J2

Yep, that's the one. No, you don't have to be unrooted for it to work. You won't even lose any data once you learn the -w trick(you'll see) Here's a guide written by Flash, the kernel Dev Jedi Master. Look over that thread, and you'll figure it out pretty quick I bet ?

Welcome bro! Give em hell :good:
I can second this method. I flash factory images with root/unlocked bootloader. It is easy to do.

Hi there,
I have a very brief question:
My M8's bootloader is unlocked, it was rooted + S-OFF and I modified the CID. I also had a custom recovery installed but decided to stay with the stock one in order to get original HTC OTA updates. So, after a recent OTA: Root is gone.
My question: When I flash a new bootloader and apply the root (mediafire) - Will any data be wiped in the process? Just asking because I don't have an (easy) method of backuping at the moment... no Titanium without root, no nandroid without custom recovery
Thanks in advance!

Easy
1, flash custom recovery
2, flash superuser zip
3, look HERE for the backup corresponding to your software number
4, there will be a stock recovery contained within the backup package, flash it
5, you will be as you were but rooted and with a stock recovery and you will be able to receive otas as long as the conditions HERE are met :good:
Obviously the next OTA will break root but u know what u are doing now lol
Thank you very much, exocetdj! Consider it done.
I will probably not go back to stock recovery however. I *really* was thinking with this phone I will keep the stock ROM, but I was looking into the Android Development section here yesterday night and....ahh, damn it, I can't resist anymore
Cheers

Yeah I most certainly know. My HTC Desire and GS3 wouldn't have survived that long if it was not for XDA-dev
But you know... at some point you have so much work to do you are really just glad if the stuff works reliably. But then again... All those tweaks and nice themes... It's just soo tempting...
Where is my USB cable??

Depending on what build you are on (newer ones can't go it), you may be able to fastboot boot recovery instead of flashing recovery. Once booted into recovery, you can flash SU or SuperSU.
You need to be bootloader unlocked either way. So I actually don't see a point in doing what you ask. Once you root, you can always install stock recovery again.

Follow this guide for rooting.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/vomerguides-m8-bootldr-unlock-s-off-t2800727
but as redpoint73 said you have to unlock bootloader and install custom recovery.

That is not exactly what I said. If the phone is 4.4.3 or 4.4.2, OP should be able to fastboot boot recovery without flashing it. Then flash SU/SuperSU. I've seen others do it this way, although I personally don't see much point to it.
But yes, bootloader still needs to be unlocked.

Booting it instead of flashing it is better if you want to make a backup of stock recovery. Especially if it's Philz that you're booting since TWRP doesn't seem to make backups of the stock recovery anyways.
Using the dd command to make a "copy" of the recovery works if you're rooted and to be rooted you have to have custom recovery which doesn't help much since you lose stock recovery the moment you flash the custom one, but if you boot it and root then at least you can use the dd command if that is the way you want to make a "backup" of your stock recovery. Silly little circle to run around in

Yes, I was aware of that; although it didn't seem to be the OP's goal. But thanks for pointing it out for their benefit.

To get updates you need a stock ROM unmodified, it can be rooted just do not mess with build.prop or platform.xml. However, to be able to install updates you need a stock recovery.

As long as you have a stock recovery it's all good. But even if you have a custom one, before doing the update install a custom recovery. Make the update, and after that if you want flash again a custom recovery.

That depends on exactly what you are trying to accomplish. What is your reason for unrooting and returning to stock (as it sounds like that is what you are trying to do)?

Then just unroot with SU.
Restoring stock recovery is only necessary if you want the ability to install future OTA updates. But again, you were not specific as to your end goal.

I believe the SU app will still be present, but you can then just uninstall it.
Aside from that, not sure if any "traces" will still be present or not. If you want to be sure its fully stock, than RUU.
You say you don't want to return to full stock. But then you say you want it the way it was before you started any mods. That is the same as returning to stock.

If root checker says no root, and in bootloader is says Software Status is "official" than I probably wouldn't worry about it too much.

I was on stock Lollipop Dev Edition (but rooted) for a long time. Currently on SkyDragon Sense 7 v9.0.
Also, in addition to it saying "official" for software status, just restore stock recovery if you want OTA updates (as previously mentioned - but just wanted to clarify my last post). After that, you should be good to go.

Okay, I'm running 8.1 on December 5th security patch, with Magisk and stock kernel.
I want to update my phone (mostly because it's nagging me), and I also want to run Elemental X.
Can someone help a noobie out? What should I do in order/steps to update my phone without loosing my data/app arrangements?
Magisk is obviously preventing me from being able to do OTA, and when I tried to "Uninstall" Magisk, my phone wouldn't boot anymore and I had to restore from NANDroid.
TIA!

Download the full image for Android 11 then use either the flash-all.bat file (will do a factory format so beware) or adb sideload it.
Going to a new version of Android it's always recommended to factory format.
Either way you will need to re-root after using magisk canary
This is pretty much what I thought. So there's no way to keep root then :crying:

Cheer up @boominsko you act like you loose root permanently. After updating just do the patch boot.img thing. Make sure to use the latest Magisk Canary. Also make sure to switch to canary channel.
Haha! Yeah, it's not so bad. Just a bit of a pain in the backside to fiddle around with files and ADB etc. Oh well. Thanks for the advice though!

You have to redo root even after security patches every month. This is no different
