Backup for RCS? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

If you haven't heard by now, there's been some strings in the Android Messages app indicating that there are going to be some new features coming to the app, potentially including RCS enabled by Google.
That sounds all fine and dandy; there's a number of benefits to rcs over sms. One problem though, is there doesn't seem to be a way to back them up. I'm someone who likes to back up all of my text messages - I've been using SMS backup and restore to do weekly backups for a little while now, and can take the resulting xml file anywhere i need to, and carry my texting threads to a new phone if I need to.
So when RCS inevitably becomes available (i'm on project fi), how can those be backed up? I've been searching all over for a while, and there doesn't seem to be a solution to this yet. Are they stored in the same directory as regular text messages? Why can't apps that backup sms/mms messages also backup rcs messages? is it just a matter of them being updated to include the capability, or is there a technical limitation to that?
tl;dr How can you backup rcs messages?

Unfortunately, you will have to downloada third party texting app. I'm having the same issue with my tmobile s9. I'm using the Mood messenger app. So far so good. Hopefully sms back up and restore comes up with an update supporting this RCS crap..

[Q] MMS images missing after MyBackup Pro restore

Hello all. I've searched the web for this problem, but can't seem to find anyone else with it. So I thought I would throw this out there and hope someone has a solution.
I recently upgraded from a 2.1 stock ROM to a 2.2 ROM. Before upgrading, I backed up all my data (SMS, MMS, call log) with MyBackup Pro by ReWare. Upon restoring the data, after installing the custom 2.2 ROM (the most recent leak), I do not have any of my MMS pictures from non-verizon contacts. They just show as blank spaces in my messaging conversation.
Messages from my Verizon friends still show the pictures, but messages from AT&T friends do not. Very frustrating since many of my family are non-Verizion.
Anyone have any advice? Do images just stay stored on a server until I choose to save them? I don't know how this stuff works.
just a quick addition to bump this back up...
It happened to both my wife's and my phones, and with hers I was simply going from one 2.1 ROM to another, so apparently it has nothing to do with the change in versions. And on both of our phones it is only the contacts from AT&T for which our MMS images and videos are missing. This is odd. Anyone?

[Q] Sending texts causes crash

There are two people (at least) that I can't send text messages to. One is on AT&T and one is on Sprint so their carrier isn't the issue. And it doesn't matter which sms app I use.
When I use Chomp I get this result: "Unfortunately, chomp SMS has stopped."
When I use the stock messaging app I get this result: "Unfortunately, Messaging has stopped."
There is no existing thread with these people and their cell phone numbers are valid. When they send me texts everything looks normal on their end but I don't get the message.
I am bone dry stock.
Any ideas? This is very annoying and I probably will have the same problem with other people, I just haven't discovered it yet.
I've never heard of this issue before

I don't think so. How do I check? When I long press their names in the contact list I see an option to "add to reject list" which suggests they aren't blocked. How else can I check?
I don't think I've blocked anyone. Is there a way to check everyone I've blocked? And on a related note, what happens when I add someone to the reject list? If they call me will they go straight to voicemail or what?

Are you opposed to rooting and trying out a ROM? I honestly don't know what's going on, but if it's crashing your sms programs, it sounds to me somehow software or settings related (but I've never seen anything that could do that). Since it's most-likely software related, I'd bet a fresh install would solve it.
But that being said, it's a really bizarre thing to have happened.
I'd try erasing the problem contacts and re-adding them before going too far into it. Very odd problem though, thats for sure!
It does not sound like you have anyone Blocked / Rejected. Did you install any apps before the issue started?

Honestly, I have never heard of this before. Usually, I would never want to bother sprint tech, but I would go show them and see what they think. That is very odd. Have you tried a factory reset? (Backup everything first)

Sprint Galaxy S3 "Supernexus"
Whiplashh Rom
Look it up.
So I'm in a major bind. I realized that the problem was for anyone who I didn't already have a sms thread with. If I send/receive text messages with someone that has an existing thread, it works fine. If they don't have a thread send/receive text fails as I described.
I tried uninstalling Chomp SMS and that didn't help. So I figured there might be some corruption in my text message store so I backed up my sms & mms and then deleted everything. Now I can't send/receive text messages from ANYONE and when I try to restore my text messages it fails. I backed up with two different apps to be safe and they both failed.
At this point it seems like the only option is a factory reset. Does anyone have another suggestion to fix this?
Before doing a factory reset I'd like to back everything up but I'm not rooted yet and to make matters worse I'm on vacation with my Mac rather than my Windows laptop -- so rooting is not possible. I don't want to do a factory reset and lose everything but I can't be away for this many days without the capability to send/receive text messages. Especially since people who are texting me have no idea I'm not getting their texts. FML
Turn on Mobile Data. Update Profile & PRL, Turn off your mobile data.
Backup export your contacts list. should be like a
Contacts.VCF file.
And backup your SMS messages if possible
Go into applications / All Applications > Wipe Data for both messaging apps + Wipe Contacts list.
Turn off your sync for contacts.
Reboot your device.
Open up both messaging apps and tweak / change what ever you need in the settings for both applications.
Turn on your data and reset LTE/CMDA CMDA/EVDO back and forth once
Reboot your phone.
Import your contacts list.
Re-sync your contacts.
Then try messaging them.
If that doesn't work then I have no clue what'll help with your issue being non-rooted.

I tried this, it didn't work.
Now I have another problem. When I try to sync my contacts, after restoring them from the backup, I'm getting an error. The error says "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly." Maybe it will be back shortly but in my experience with a similar problem with calendar syncing a couple years back, this is not so easy to fix.
Any suggestions?
Your firmware and base is updated to MD4 right?
EDIT:
Have you tried Go SMS Pro Using this method?
Download from Google play
Open application and go to settings
Click Advanced Tab.
Click MMS Settings
Checkmark Fill APN Configuration Manually.
Code:
MMSC
http://mms.sprintpcs.com
MMS Proxy
68.28.31.7
MMS Port
80
Force Close application, and then reboot it, and now try sending something SMS or MMS.
Yes, I'm on MD4.
I actually think MD4 may have something to do with this. The first time I noticed the problem was right around the time I installed MD4. It was within a day, either right before or right after. For some reason Sprint pushed MD4 to may waaaaay after everyone else got it which is why I just recently got it.
I tried your Go SMS Pro technique but got not joy. The stock messaging app still crashes. Go SMS doesn't crash when I send messages but nothing is actually sent. And whenever someone sends me text messages I still don't get them.

[Q] SMS messages only seen by stock app

Hi,
I am having issues with SMS messages not appearing in third party applications.
I am on
HTC One M8 (UK) Vodafone
Android 5.0.1
Sense 6.0
ROM Stock 4.19.161.2
For only a few contacts, I get SMS messages for them and they only appear in the stock HTC messaging app. I use Google Hangouts normally. I can always see the full conversation in the Stock app but other third party ones don't show the full conversation. I have tried Handcent and Textra as well, all behave like Hangouts and don't see the messages.
I deleted all SMS to clear out what I had, there is also a single SMS from one contact where I cannot open or delete their message but I can see the first few lines or so in the preview window. This leads me to believe the SMS db is corrupt or something. This may be related but the not being able to delete has been something recent and the not getting the 3rd party apps to see certain messages has been happening for a while.
I hope someone can help, really bugging me now.
I am on Stock at present, device is not rooted and I have not altered the bootloader etc.
Thanks
Jason

Can't receive any RCS text on alternative apps

Not really an S20 specific question, but -
I want to move away from the android/google messages app. I've tried both signal and textra now. On both apps, if the sender is utilizing RCS (has "chat features" turned on in messages), I do not receive the message. If RCS/Chat Features is turned off, I get their messages just fine. I know this because I was using my wifes phone to test... turning RCS on and off and sending messages to see what would come through to my phone.
Given how prolific the android/google messages app is, am I pretty much locked into it now? I don't understand why messages sent from others utilizing RCS aren't reaching my phone when using any app other than the messages app.
Any help much appreciated. I'd really like to have the freedom to use a different app.
Thanks!

Question RCS Chat Texting Not Working for Some Contacts

I use the native Samsung Messages text app that came with the Fold 3 (can't use Google Messages even if I wanted to because it doesn't show a bunch of past texts from my previous phone that I need access to). For the past week or two, a few contacts who also use RCS Chat texting have the blue/green dots on the Contacts list in the app, but not on the Conversation list, and it won't send Chat texts, only SMS/MMS, to them. But, their texts often come to me as Chat texts. This app has no way to toggle Chat on/off to reset it, but neither Airplane Mode nor restarting my phone (including after the T-mobile update with the eSIM/dual-SIM additions) fixed the problem.
Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a way to fix it from my end? Or is it a Google server issue (it began with one of those times everyone's dot flashes off and then back on when you tap on them)? I know the person uses Google Messages because they don't have a Samsung phone (I think they have an LG). It is pretty important for one contact it isn’t working for to see if/when they read their texts. (Thankfully, for the other important one, theirs is working, and that's a Google Pixel phone.)
Anyone have an answer or also have this problem?
