Unstable Charging on my M9 - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
A few days ago, this problem started to show on my device.
When I'm charging it, it says "charging", but even the slightest movement can stop the phone from charging.
Sometimes it even toggles *charging*/*not charging* without me moving it at all.
For example, if the battery is on <15%, the phone will vibrate - so when I charge it when it's below 15%, if I touch it, it vibrates every 5 seconds or so.
It's really terrible... I once left the phone to charge for a few hours just to come back and find out it wasn't charging.
I've tried different USB cables, power sockets, chargers, so I guess it has to be a problem with my device.
I'm pretty confident it's a hardware issue, and I bought it around 10 month ago, so warranty should still be up. However, I don't remember anything particular that could damage the charging port, and this started all of a sudden (a day earlier it was charging perfectly).
I'd like to hear some opinions, solutions, and if any of you have had this before.

It's definitely the charging port, maybe it was faulty from factory, send it in warranty

Get a dress making pin or something tough and really pointy and carefully scratch inside the port. Be careful of the plastic inside. Do not bend it or snap it off. Do not scratch or pick at the pins on the top of the plastic. Only scratch around the plastic.
Shine a torch in and see if you can find any loose debris that you may have dislodged. Keep doing it until you can't get no more fluff etc out of it and try plugging the charger in again.
It should have a nice solid clunk as the plug goes in and seats properly now.

Hey, thanks alot for your replies. @shivadow I've tried cleaning the port like you said , this maybe helped a little but the problem is not solved.
P.S : I noticed that there is a position which is problematic.
When the phone is connected to the charger, if I hold the cable with my hand, and push it upwards (I exert force on the cable in a direction vertical to the screen). This is when it stops charging. Just stating this if it might help you diagnosing something specific.
Anyway I think I'll be sending it back to the lab this week or next week, thanks a lot for your help!

Either a faulty cable, plug or socket. If it happens with other cables it'll be the socket. If you know for a fact that the plug is seating correctly but you still have the problem then either worn pins or worn socket.

So it turns out that when I tried to check whether the charger, or the USB cable is to blame, I tried 2 different cables, but they were both faulty, which made me think the problem is with my HTC.
Now I tried changing phones and still had the same issue, so I tried more usb cables, and voila! Works like a charm

[Q] Original usb cable is loose. Whats your take?

My charger doesnt fit well and i just came to terms with this but it has got worse the last two weeks. It plugs in and the led lights up but it doesnt charge sometimes, it says it is charging but an hour later and the battery goes down 5% ish. Also it only connects when the phone sits face up and the cord hangs down as in it must sit on the edge of the table for it to charge. I tried my friends Droid cord and it was a snug fit. do i have an insurance claim on my hands?
You can try getting the cable swapped, but honestly I think the amount of hassle you would go through would just not be worth it. If the problem was with your phone then I would 100% definitely get the phone replaced, but if the problem is only with the cable, I'd take the path of least resistance and just buy a new cable out of pocket. They really aren't expensive if you know the right place to get them.

It is only $3.13 shipped (to my address), and it's 2 feet longer than the original cable which I like because I thought the original one was too short. Never had a problem with it charging my Aria. I know it seems too good to be true, but the quality really is just as good as a $20+ cable you'd find at a local store.
I ran into the same problem with an Aria I bought off of Craigslist. It would kind of charge at first, then it gave up altogether. I found that the end that plugged into the phone had been slightly squished by the previous owner. I just went to Staples and bought a Staples branded MicroUSB cable, it's six feet long and works fine. Granted, it wasn't ebay-cheap but I got the problem handled same day, no screwing around. The nice thing about this cable is it's just as flexible as the original, unlike the MicroUSB charge/sync cables that come with Blackberry phones and the extra length makes it a little more versatile.

My connection is getting worse every day. It is very aggravating. I'll plug in at night time and wake up to find my phone didn't charge at all. I have to put the cable in at a slight angle to get it to connect.
Using adb and just any file transfer on the computer is almost impossible.
I use the original cable, and sometimes my brother's Captivate cable--both are just as bad.
And the AT&T car charger is a joke. So I think it is the phone, not the cables.
i find that the motorola(backflip) usb doesnt fit snug(still charges & transfers fine, a little slower)

Finally had enough of the cable problem, so I decided to figure out whats wrong. Turns out, I ended up pulling out about a cubic centimeter of dust and lint from in the port (way down in there, a quick glance and it didn't look as bad as it really was.)
Works like a charm, now!

For future reference,
The MicroUSB cable that has become the new standard contains 2 prongs on the end of it. This prong is responsible for ensuring it stays locked into the connector.
The newer MicroB connector is rated at a higher use cycle than the old MiniB type, which is why current devices are moving to it as a standard. It is also designed so that the cheaper cable will bear the wear and damage, rather than the device. The usual culprit is the two latch pins at the top of the male connector which tend to wear and bend eventually causing the cord to become "flaky" or fickle (for a lack of a better term). This is usually the cause of most people's woes. However often times the connections from inside the cable may wear and short out, causing the cord to become dysfunctional. Before sending your phone in for a replacement, I highly recommend trying a second cable.
If changing the cord doesn't work, the problem most likely lies with the phone. While it is possible that the PCB mount has come disconnected from the board, it is more often than not likely that the port has become clogged with debris. So before sending your phone in for service, check the port and ensure that the port is clear and clean of obstruction.
This also goes for charging or data transfer. Sometimes issues with data transfer can arise out of a bad cable. This often happens when people wrap their cord too tightly or kink it, which causes signal interference. It also occurs with frequent use and wear and tear, which is normal.
Take good care of your cord, and it'll be there to last you a long time.

Stock Cable > Hard to Plug on the Charging Port of the Phone

I just purchased this unit. is it normal that the Stock Cable is Hard to Plug on the Charging Port of the Phone..
i need to try so many times before i can plug the charging cable to charging port of the phone before i can plug it successfully. i'm thinking of breaking the charging port if this is the case? Anyone who have the same concern? Thanks

I noticed this as well. hopefully if something gets broken its more likely to be the connector on the cable than the charging port. I have tried a few other cables as well and all are pretty difficult to insert.
Well the way I see it would you rather have it flop around and be loose, or have a night tight fit?
On a more serious note I had the same issue when I first recieved my F400S. After a week or so it got better, you can always try an older micro usb cable thats more broken in to avoid this issue.
when i first got the phone it was like what you've desribed. but after a while, it wasn't an issue anymore, i guess its a good sign that the phone is brand spanking new.

I tilt the usb-connector up (just a bit) while plugging it in.

It requires a downward angle tilting towards the device to insert.
Same for me, but once you're using qi charging and Wi-Fi file transfer, you'll hardly ever use the port.

Only way to get it in is by tilting the cable downward. Tried few cables, they are all doing the same thing. Exchange perhaps?

Tilting the cable to plug in seems to be the norm on pretty much every G3. I doubt exchanging it will help.
Once you've done it for a while, it should become pretty easy to do.
Tilting the cable and just dealing with it are fine, but what happens when you stay finding usb cables that don't want to charge your G3 properly? I have one (very nice) 10ft cable and my phone plays a game of connecting and disconnecting while trying to charge with this cord. This courts does not give me the same problems on other devices. However the G3 charges just fine on all my other cables. Not using this cable is an obvious answer but i worry that the problem could get worse and what if I start having problems with other chargers?
For now, the solution is to tilt the cord slightly downward (or upward, depending on your perspective) as the port is just sliiiiightly more flush with the opening. My advice is to get used to doing this. A broken charger port is really a PITA, so taking an extra 2 seconds to plug it in is the prudent choice. My dad gave me a lot of good advice when I was growing up, and one of the gems turns out to be "don't force things."
As mentioned, once we get some wireless charging back covers on a more accessible basis, we'll all just use wireless charging and never plug in again. Except in the car.
The cable from my old GS4 plugs in very very easily. I haven't tried charging with it tho. I use it mainly for usb mtp.

Difficult at first. It did get better for me though. I too thought i had damaged it or that it had shipped that way. And I also thought I was just breaking it more each time I charged and contemplated exchanging LOL. Make sure cord is facing the right way first (im still trying to put it in upside down sometimes), then you do have to tilt it down a bit to get in initially and then it tilts slightly up before fully inserting. It was very diificult to do the first couple days. Day 5 and its way easy. Hope this has helped and put your mind at ease This is my first Android phone and i'm luvin it!

Any new updates on this? I guess tilting the cable a bit is working, but will it ever get to the point it will go straight in? It really appears that this is not a defect but a LG design for the port.

I agree with what was previously stated, after a week with phone, I've become used to putting the cable in. I'm pleased with the tight fit as I've had devices where it feels loose and unsecured.

[Q] Need help with charging issue please

I have my phone plugged into the wall, lighter, or pc it will start charging. However, after several minutes it will start connecting and disconnecting itself, even when sitting on a table without any outside interference or touching it. This is with several different cable wires, chargers and even a dock. Anyone know if it's likely to be microUSB or a battery issue? It's unrooted and running stock KitKat.
Mine did the exact same thing, and would wake me up in the middle of the night with the beeping. Eventually, it stopped charging altogether, the night before I was supposed to go on a 400 mile road trip!
My solution was to clean the USB port on the phone. I used a product called DeOxIt and a small metal pick from the garage (I suppose a small paperclip would also work). Power down the phone, and remove the battery. Apply a drop of DeOxIt to the paperclip, and GENTLY scrub back and forth over the USB connector inside the phone (you'll need to get both sides - top & bottom). After that, unplug your charging cord, and apply a drop into the USB connector, and then work it in and out of the phone a dozen times. Let everything dry thoroughly, reassemble, and reboot!
I haven't had the issue since, and it's been almost a full year.

Bad USB port? Maybe a software issue?

Saturday night I had my phone on the charger overnight. When I woke up, it was still low and had not charged. I played with the cable and got it to start charging, but not properly. I figured it was probably a bad cable or charger, not sure why though. So I used a zero lemon case that worked fine. My charger in the car worked okay too. Fast forward to this morning and the phone now displays as being plugged into usb and charging something - see attached. Plugging in any other chargers changes nothing. Powering off will show a charging icon. I doubt it's a software issue but it could be I suppose, but I suspect I have a bad charging port. It's currently wireless charging, but still displaying the message in the status bar. Stock ROM, custom kernel. Any ideas? I will probably try a reflash tonight to see if it changes anything. Edit: not a kernel issue, switched kernels and same issue. I'm almost certain this is a bad usb port but I've never experienced a bad one before.
Is it still attached to the Zero Lemon case? It looks like the phone is charging it. If nothing is attached, then the port might be goofed. Did you try cleaning any lint out of it? Use a toothpick or plastic dental flosser. DO NOT use a paperclip or anything else metal as it could damage the port.

It's not. I did find that it will charge when connected to a PC, but not a charger. Port is clean as far as I can tell.

Have you tried a different wall charger, reversing the cable, same cable different charging block, etc? Does the notification persist all the time, only after it's plugged in, does rebooting remove it?

I have, three different chargers, all with different cords. One of them is the same cord I used to connect it to a PC a minute ago, and USB and charging work when connected to a PC. Reboot does nothing, the notification persists until it's plugged into a PC.
I had this issue too, was freaking out. Cleaned the USB c port with a dental pick and got some lint out, still no good.
So...I powered off the device. Wrapped a thin layer of iso alcohol wipe on the dental stick and cleaned as good as I could. After a few seconds of drying, used a aerosol duster to blow out the port.
Been fine for months now.
An update, in the usb preferences screen, if I select USB controlled by this device, it will charge normally. Seems more like a software issue, but if it's acting weird when off, would it be? When off it would indicate a firmware or hardware issue. At least I would think.

Please don't use a toothpick to clean USB ports. I did that some time ago and broke some pins, just slightly, so it sometimes worked, sometimes it didn't. Replacing the jack (was a different waterproof phone) was a pain and cost a quite a bit of money.
Try to wash it down with alcohol and blow it lightly with compressed air, several times.

Yeah, I found that out. Kinda crappy. Other option is to send in and wait. Turn around time, 10-15 business days. Seriously? They know these devices are important for our daily lives now, they expect someone to wait that long?

I had to RMA my P2XL and I did the option where you send it in then they send the replacement. I think they send the replacement once they see the original has been shipped. I dropped mine off at UPS and the next day I got an email saying my replacement was being sent out.

No fast charging,USB and headphone not working

My note 10 plus suddenly when plugging headphone or USB adapter ; connected disconnected usb , appears and disappears rapidly in notification and doesn't work ,fast charging not working also,only regular charge...
I tried clean the USB port but no benefit...
any solution please??

I've seen reports of this before, and it always seems to have been a hardware issue. You could try a factory reset, but it's unlikely to help.
first step try as many different leads as you can as it could be faulty leads, it's the most common problem but as you say it's happening with multiple things it probably isn't this.
had similar problems on other phones alcohol and a thin pick has tended to fix it when I've needed to do it.
one way I've found that works to clean it out assuming the USB lead is going in fully, (if not use a thin pick as it could be a bit fluff in the bottom of the socket stopping it engaging fully) is to turn off the phone get a disconnected USB lead, (very important it isn't plugged into any source of power during) dip the end that plugs into the phone in alcohol (proper cleaning alcohol not just drink as it evaporates quick) put the plug in and out a couple of times, let it dry out then repeat a couple of times, if it's just dirty contacts this will clean it, just make sure when connecting the USB lead is just damp and not dripping to avoid any flooding of the socket.
outside ofm that I would assume it's a hardware fault.

Fixed it by using electronic cleaner spray its made my day ,moisture alert appears and after four hours gone after that its works!!:laugh:, i dont know if its bad but it fixed this problem
was possibly just a short in the socket due to dampness for a while, but the port should be waterproof like the rest of the phone really so nothing should have really got in the phone.
but if it's working it likely was just dirty contacts.

Thank you for providing detailed instructions on port contact maintenance. I started having issues right after updating to A11 so assumed ultra fast charging on my note 10+ broke due to that update. However, just to be sure i ordered new oem block and cable and the ultra fast charging began to rapidly cycle from on to off, so i did more research and came across your reply. I dipped both ends of the old usbc cable into a half oz of reagent grade alcohol 99%+ shook them off so there wasnt a full drop of alcohol in them and slid the cable in and out a few times. Then let it dry for a min and plugged it back in to the new block using new cable. It seems to be stable now, however as i write this reply, it cycled twice between on and off, so I'll keep trying to clean the port and report back if successful.
Confirming that cleaning the contacts on the cable and phone using reagent grade alcohol and a thin pick worked to resolve the issue. Examination of the port and cable with the naked eye did not reveal fouling. Keep that in mind when deciding on trying the cleaning.
