Hello all. Well after many many years with Sprint they finally got on my last nerve and now I am a new Verizon customer and a very happy new owner of the Galaxy Nexus. Awesome phone! Anyway my question is I have been told the bootloader of this phone is locked. I have never messed with a phone with a locked bootloader. While I was with Sprint I had the Epic 4G Touch so I am familiar with Odin, CWM, flashing roms, etc. What is the preferred method to altering the Nexus to be able to root, CWM, flash roms? Also what is currently considered by most to be the best rom that leaves the phone with all of its functions working? Thank you in advance for any information you folks can offer.

Unlock the boot loader firstly but beware it will wipe your sdcard.
Use fast boot to unlock it, type oem fastboot unlock and go from there.
Flash cwm using fastboot by typing fastboot flash recovery xxxxxxx.img (xxxxx.img is whatever the filename is)
You are probably familiar with cwm so I won't bother explaining that.
All the rooms here have everything working on them. We'll except sense 4.0 and touchwiz ports etc. But that's obvious.
Ps. All phones have locked bootloaders!
Yeah, you might mean unlocked bootloader. You do have to unlock it first, but it doesn't take an exploit to do so. See here for a starting point:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1400871
As for the best rom, impossible to say, so many . It depends on what exactly you're looking for. aokp is probably the most features-popular, but there are many others. I use cm9 with the reloaded mod, personally.
sent from my Zerg Hatchery.
Ok I used the Toolkit 5.5 to unlock, root, CWM etc. Seemed easy and effortless. I have now installed AOKP Rom on my Nexus. What do I need or need to know in order to return my phone to box stock say incase I have to take it to Verizon for any reason?

Options 8 (Extract and Flash Google Factory Stock ROM), 10 (Reflash Stock Recovery [just to be safe]), and 11 (Relock bootloader) will return it all to stock. I know, because I just had to do this to 3 GNex's this past week to send them back to Verizon
Looks like your question was answered, but for me, I used Wugfreshes toolkit to root then to unroot, just click unroot, let it do its thing and then click OEM lock to make it factory.

Only if you are stock and rooted.
He is running a custom rom and kernel and has cwm flashed, that method will not revert them to stock.

My apologies, I totally forgot to update my signature. I do not have the GSII anymore.
Can anyone point me int he direction of the box stock rom file I need to work with Toolkit to restore my phone? I followed the directions and got the image from code.google.com but it wont install. ALways says something is missing.
Toolkit says the file shouls end in .tgz but the file I am downloading from Google does not say that. My phone is 4.0.2 (ICL53F) and that is the file I am downloading from Google's image site.

ok guys i just picked up a play for att. sucks cause i have tmobile and wont get the 3/4g data. im almost always in wifi spots anyway so no big deal.
anyway i have already called att and got the phone sim unlocked. now if i think i understand this correctly this should be the order to follow. if you guys can confirm and provide latest links i would appreciate greatly.
1. sim unlock (done)
2. unlock bootloader (not yet)
3. root (not yet)
4. load rom (not yet)
correct??? did i miss anything? any preferred method on any of these? please advise.
thanks!!!
First of all, if you bought a xperia PLAY, you should probably post in the xperia PLAY forums.
Second of all, questions go in the Q & A forum.
To answer your question, that's pretty much the right order.

For img flash you can use flashtool.
You don't need root or anything to use flashtool on your phone.
Just pick correct .ftf for your phone and flash it to the phone.

If you were rooted before you don't need to re-root unless you purposely unrooted it. IF you aren't rooted anymore superoneclick or the zergrush(however it's spelled) is the easiest. I'm 99% sure you don't have an unlocked bootloader though, so you have very few options. I'd say re-root if you need to and unlock your bootloader so you can flash flash and flash custom roms like crazy

You need to pay Setool credits in order to unlock the bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader allows you to lose the sin lock as well, so you could have killed two birds with the same stone.

ya i just found the website. seems like thats the one everyone is sent to on this site.
im wondering now that im rooted if i can clean this stock rom up enough to use on a daily basis. i mean im using tmobile on the device so sharing internet would only be edge lol. i guess the only thing i really want ics for is that fact that its ics.
open the dial pad and use this code*#*#7378423#*#* . Then go to -> "Service Info" -> "Configuration".
If it says unlock bootloader = no, then you have to use the paid service, if yes, then you can do it for free yourself.

I'm in the same boat muchlove. Damn. Anybody with Verizon connections out there? Put in a call for us poor bastards? I would unlock it but I'm paranoid that because it's a VZW device, the typical unlock either won't work or worse brick it. I know these things are pretty brick-proof - or at least can be un-bricked but still...I'd rather follow the instructions of somebody who's been through it on this VZW Z2. I just cannot wait to have a remote 10.1 monitor to my PS4. Every day seems like a week.
Hello everyone!
I would greatly appreciate if someone could show the right way to get my phone fully functional;
SPRINT HTC ONE M8
GSM SIM UNLOCKED for use on GSM networks
S-OFF
Rooted
TWRP
HBOOT 3.18.0.0000
RADIO 1.08.20.0612_4
CID-11111111
software version: 2.16.654.4
android: 4.4.3.
Issue:
1. I can not install any OTA updates, and the notification keeps popping out.
2. Mobile data is just not working properly even though I did everything as said here;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-htc-one-m8/general/enabling-3g-umts-countries-t2847461
As I did my research, it was some kind of a major bug on this series of Sprint M8 phones with breakdowns in mobile data. However, since I can not get any updates, the problem perists.
I tried installing custom ROM's, but so far ARHD 22 didn't even boot and LiquidSmooth couldn't detect the SIM card at all.
I know there are quite a few tutorials and "how-to" threads explaining all you need to know about RUU, cusotm ROM's, etc. However if someone could tell me what exactly to do and in which order (return to stock, then update?) I would greatly appreciate it.
Many many thanks!

Easiest way to get it back to stock is just flash the Sprint H/K RUU. You can download it from HERE. Just run it and connect your phone when prompted and follow the instructions (I'd probably change your CID back to the Sprint one first to be on the safe side but as you're S-OFF it shouldn't be needed). You might also need HTC Sync Manager installed. If so, you can get it HERE
This process will wipe the phone completely so back up any data first but other than that you'll at least be back to stock and then troubleshoot any issues from there
Thanks
Many thanks to everyone.

Nope, that shouldn't be touched but as I've not had a SIM-locked device in years I can't say for certain

Power+vol up for about 15 seconds then power+vol down to get into recovery. You cant flash it unless you swap out Sprint specific files otherwise you'll get what just happened or boot directly into boot loader.
Like I mentioned I can pull the files together and see if I can get it working for Sprint tonight when I get home but until then flash either fluent Rom or stock if you want lollipop or just flash bad boyz if you don't mind kitkat

Also, I just found some official EU RUU's with different radio's as far as I can tell from the filename.
Maybe that could be the final solution to all the problems?
I haven't found any information for my specific model for some reason.
What I want to do is install stock Android 5 (by stock, I mean what comes on the Google Nexus) on my Verizon Samsung s4 mini (SCH-I435).
To my knowledge, this would involve:
Rooting the phone
Finding a compatible ROM
Flashing the ROM
I just can't find any guides or ROMs for my specific model. Can anyone here help?
I have the exact same model of the s4-mini as you do, and I've looked around just about everywhere. It seems that the bootloader has never been unlocked for this variant of the S4-mini. Verizon also just released a new firmware update that patches the kernel, preventing the use of previous root methods, and it may be some time till someone finds a way around it. If you find anything, please tell me, as I can't stand this bloatware crap on my phone.

Usually people create software, such as Cyanogenmod, that exploit vulnerabilities in the software on the phone, giving them access to the bootloader. One of the many issues with this variant is that it is distributed by Verizon, and Verizon is very vigilant about patching vulnerabilities.
EDIT: After a little more digging, I found that the bootloader is completely locked and there is a 99.9999999% chance that it will never be unlocked, typical Verizon for you.

Correction
You can root the SCH-I435 with towel root, install SuperSU and Busy Box from Play store. Then flash phils touch recovery and then flash a rom from SD card in recovery. Beware, if you are on Bluegrass cellular. Any rom must be for CDMA phone for the SCH-I435.
Where would I find a compatible ROM?

Definitely not legit. They simply have tons of links on their site to upgrading every single phone to lollipop. Inside of each page is exactly the same link to the same "ROM" for every phone, and the comments at the bottom of the page aren't actually real, they are just a picture. Try changing the number at the end of the link "...updateupgrade_70.html" and you will see what I mean.
I was able to successfully root my phone by flashing 4.4.2 NE1 (opposed to the latest version) via Odin and using Towelroot.
Has there been any progress on the addition of a custom recovery?

I found something interesting that might be worth looking into. This guy (http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-s4-mini/527518-serious-question-needing-advice.html) claims to have installed a custom rom that was designed for the GT-I9195 on his SCH- i435. I have actually run into him before on other on some other threads and he seems to be legit. But the problem still remains that when he installed the rom his sound and mic didn't work. Still worth looking into though.

I sent him a PM. Maybe he can shed some light on this
Just curious, would over of the international variant ROMs work if we managed to unlock the bootloader or would the SCH-I435 require its own specific one?
I found an app called Flashify that claims to be able to flash a boot loader or recovery to your device from your device.
Do you think flashing CWM or TWRP would work this way?

It seems that the only thing that this has to offer for us is a way to flash your phone without using a computer, and to back up your phone (I haven't actually tried restoring from a backup). But we still need a version of CWM or TWRP that is made for the sch-i435.

But we'd still need to unlock the boy loader...
SCH-I435
Anyone got success for installing custom recovery and custom ROM on SCH-I435 Verizon? Please help if anyone have done that all.

So two years later - has this ever been done?
I need to put android 5.0 on my S4 Mini so I can use the Square app to accept credit card payments for my business. Their app will not work on anything earlier than 5.0. Otherwise I will have to buy a new phone!:crying:
