HTC One M9 built-in updates - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks,
I'm going to root my device, but should I wait for anymore from HTC for the M9?
Apparently, everything is updated...
Also any brief tips would be great about rooting

No more updates will be issued to the m9. 7.0 is the last.
If you are rooting it make sure you know what you're doing. If you don't then you don't need root.

Thanks, but I've rooted all my other phones, just the M8 and M9 are a little different..however, I could pay $20 and be done with it, but my main concern is the ota updates if that makes sense...

No more ota updates for the M9
You don't need to pay sunshine for just root, you only need to unlock bootloader, flash twrp and flash magisk or supersu.

Even if there was any ota's in future all you do is flash the RUU zip of the exact same firmware you have and take the ota, reroot and you're done.

No update doesn't break s off. You can also use firewater to s off device.

Is that confirmed? Had anyone tried yet? I just want to double check...been delaying sending my phone on for camera repair...but now that my laptop is down...no more kernel work for me until I get some $$...

Update won't take s-off from you. It may block you from achieving s-off, but not take it.

Probably not. S-OFF before you update. Any future updates will not cause S-ON. Updates will break root but from what I understand you can just install a custom recovery and flash superuser.

i would wait for the DEV's for firewater actually says it works with ours but over on the sprint side, they said it works for them

FYI
I can't speak to rooting after the fact, but I restored stock recovery, updated via Verizon, then flashed a custom recovery and superuser, and my root is working fine. S-Off was never affected.
Thanks I guess

It is not tested yet. You can test it yourself if you want but I don't recommend it. Chances are when u get the phone it will not be updated just tell the worker to not update and you should be fine. My brother recently bought his prior to the 4.3 s-off and he got his phone with 4.1 or 4.2 I'm not sure

If it comes new with 4.4.2 and of course s on, firewater won't work because it won't be able to get through the locked bootloader to modify files with the temp root method.
If it's a tmobile or att version you can unlock the bootloader via HTC dev and then firewater will work to get you s off since you won't need the temp root method.

S-off Benefits.

I'm going to start with an apology if my searching skills aren't that great, but I've searched all around and find nothing.. ok..question...
Can someone name some benefits a user can gain by getting s-off on this device...? I thought unlocked and rooted was enough to flash roms....now I have to get s-off??
Thanks in advance...

Edit: You don't need S-Off to flash custom roms/kernels/recoveriers - it's for people that want to tinker at a deeper level.
From what I remember from my DNA days, S-Off removes the security flag on HTC devices and allows you to flash a different h-boot, change the CID - which allows you to flash firmware from different carriers (BE CAREFUL DOING THIS), and remove the "unlocked/tampered" text from the fastboot menu.
Also, check out the 2nd half of the article in this link: http://www.pocketables.com/2013/04/why-you-want-root-and-s-off-on-htc-devices.html
Again, be careful with S-Off. If you ever go back to S-On and have the wrong h-boot or firmware installed I believe it will brick the device.

Thanks bro, I have s-on/unlocked but it doesn't say anything about being "tampered" I did notice around the threads that everyone that wanted to convert to gpe or flash a GPE Rom needs s-off?

Well that's new to me. If the developer of the ROM says to have your phone S-OFF then definitely go with their instructions. I haven't seen the S-OFF method on the forums here, but I'm sure a google search will get you to the needed file(s) and instructions. If I remember correctly, actually achieving S-OFF wasn't too complicated/dangerous as long as you're comfortable using adb/fastboot - it's just what you can do to your phone once you've achieved S-OFF that can be dangerous.

If you fully convert to gpe I think you need s-off because you use the ruu. But with an unlocked bootloader, you can just flash the gpe ROM instead of fully converting the phone.

I'm sorry, but I have to ask...what's the benefit of a full gpe conversion? Does it run faster...Will it update if the HTC gpe edition gets updated and will I have trouble with the T-Mobile bands? Thank you so much
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
That's exactly why most people do the ruu conversion, when there's an ota they will get the update too as long as you keep the stock Google recovery. Although on my m7 I was able to get ota with twrp. On m7 I kept Google radio and had no problems with T-Mobile. I think it should be the same for m8 since on the play store it says the phone supports T-Mobile. Just go check out the thread for the conversion if you need help.

Stock recovery available?

This is mostly a curiosity question, but is there a copy of the stock recovery available for download? I plan on switching to Verizon and getting a m9 and I prefer to keep a backup of all stock files (ROM, recovery, firmware) for my phone's.

I'm guessing if/when the official S-Off/Root method is released, you'll see RUU released (among other things) that will serve the purpose you need. On the HTC One M8, dottat released a bunch of RUUs and helped me out with going back to S-On when I had to do a warranty replacement.
Also, in this forum check the development section. There's a system dump there for those that want it to play around with.

I'm going with the m9 since the m8 I would get from Verizon refurb would have Lollipop. Getting s-off would require Sunshine and I expect them to have the Verizon m8 and m9 s-off-ed around the same time. Also I'm in no rush. Money is tighter than I thought it would be atm.

Is it possible to root a 7.0 S-Off M9?

I'm looking to buying an used M9 and the best one I've found is S-Off on Nougat.
I haven't found anything specific to rooting a 7.0 device, only that SunShine only goes up to 6, so that got me worried. Is it possible to root? How easy is it?

I'm not sure about the rooting part since I'm still on 6.0, but since you are s-off already, you shouldn't worry about sunshine anymore.

Actually, it's possible. Root doesn't have anything to do with flashing ROMs. Custom recovery is the one that is needed, which in this case is just one fastboot command.

magisk works well for rooting. but it seems, you should read some faqs and stuff. it's a bit dangerous if you don't know what you do

Unless you s-on or rtm the device, then you'll need the license backup on your device..

Yes. You can root your device properly. I have an HTC One M9 with s-off too and 7.0. I've used this to root my device:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65741038&postcount=5
This is the one who worked for me. Of course you have to flash first the last TWRP and do a backup. Flash the file in the post with TWRP. Make sure you really be in s-off.
Please do this by your own risk.

check firmware version?

So I managed to flash a rooted developer edition rom on my m9 and when I tried to run ota updates, I got an error saying that it couldn't finish because my phone's software has been modified. After some searching around (and admiditantly some arguing), found out that it's because my firmware doesn't match my android version. I'm still running android 5.0.2 and I don't THINK I messed with the firmware. So how do I check the firmware version and find either a rom (preferably as close to stock as possible) or a ruu that will work for the software/firmware versions that I'm using?
Please do a "fastboot getvar all" and post here.

Download this RUU: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=96039337900114053
Rename it to 0PJA100.zip
Put it in root of your card(fat32 formatted).
Boot in download(make sure you have sufficient battery) and follow instructions.
P.S: First backup your data, this procedure will erase all your data.

If you have S-OFF it's simple to convert, I'll show you a little tutorial.
If you don't have S-OFF it's impossible and you'll be stuck with this firmware if you won't get an AT&T sim.

I don't have S-offor or the $25 for sunshine. Shouldn't there be a t-mobile, MetroPCS or developer rom or ruu that's compatible with the firmware I'm using?

You can only flash AT&T because of CID, every carrier have different CID and because that the different RUU will give you error.
Only with S-OFF you can change CID and MID and flash any GSM RUU.
So, you're stuck with 1.32.502.9 firmware until you get an AT&T sim to update it or s-off it.
With this firmware you can only flash custom roms with Android version 5.x and some 6.0.x but just few 6.0.x and maybe will be unstable.
Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk
Ah, okay. So basically, I have to go back to AT&T then use a series of ruu files to work my way to nougat then finally flash the custom rom?

Or you can just flash this RUU, then update it from settings, it's more simple.
Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk
That's actually why I tried flashing a rom. AT&T won't let you get updates unless you're using their sim card for some ungodly reason.

I understand what you tried but it's impossible to jump firmware to 2.xx.502.xx or more with RUU, this can be done only with OTA on S-ON phones.

No, you cannot update it to 2.xx.502.xx or more with RUU, just OTA, Flippy explained you why in the other thread(different encryption between 1.... 2... 3... and 4... firmwares).
So the only way to update your firmware is to flash the RUU I give you(don't flash twrp, root, etc), get an AT&T sim and update it from settings until you reach nougat.
I don't explain it one more time... I think I explained the same thing in different ways 3-4 times....
Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk
Excuse me. I was thinking/hoping software provided by HTC themselves would be able to upgrade the firmware along with the OS instead of forcing everyone to be stuck with the only option for software upgrades from a carrier that we don't even want/use. It only makes sense that if it can be done on samsung phones, which I've rooted and flashed several times, it could also be done on HTC. So it looks like the only way to get nougat is to suck AT&T's ****. Thanks.
