hotspot on oneplus 3 issues. - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

I noticed a couple days ago I was getting really slow hotspot speeds. So for the last day or so, I've been testing ROMs and flashing ROMs.
Roms I have tested are:
Omni ROM 8.1 Oreo - hotspot does not even work
Nitrogen run 8.1 Oreo - hotspot does not even work
Freedom os 8.0 Oreo - very slow speed 1-3Mbps
Freedom os last nougat version - very slow speed 1-3Mbps
Stock oxygen os 8.0 Oreo stable - very slow speed 1-3Mbps
Beta 30 oxygen os Oreo - very slow speed 1-3Mbps
Beta 24 nougat oxygen os - hotspot works normal and speeds are normal
Given all these roms and flashing I've done it boils down to this in short...... If I use the beta 24 nougat, it works fine, of I use last stable nougat or above it either doesn't work or works very very very slow.
Everything phone side works fine, speeds are great. Any of the os above, be it nougat, 8.0, or 8.1 works fine without issues, no app closes nothing, but hotspot is just utterly painfully slow.
Carrier is T-Mobile. This isn't a carrier issue or hardware issue otherwise it would do the same on all roms and it does work on the one nougat oxygen os.
So my question is, what changed from the one nougat, to the other nougat and above? APN? Modem? Both?
I'm at a loss as to what is going on.
Any ideas I can try?

Idk mate, but I'm from the UK and I have the exact fkin problem for the past year. I haven't found any explanation or fix for this. I'm on Three UK. My only theory was that maybe my carrier is intentionally slowly down my speed, indirectly telling me that I have to buy hotspot allowance.

Nope I just did a test. I reverted back to a beta of nougat, beta 24. When I test that I get around 24Mbps, when I jump to the last nougat update, or anything Oreo, and this is with any rom even stock, I get crap speeds. I am SO pissed right now, because this same issue in 2016 plagued the 3t, and now it plagues the 3 as well as the 5, don't believe me go check 1+ forums it's littered with the same exact issue. So.... This issue was back in 2016, and they still can't fix it???!!!??? WTH.
Attached are pics..... Anything you see with high speeds is that nougat stock room. Anything slow speeds is Oreo or the last stock nougat. Any rom be it stock or custom that is like nougat 7.1.2 and above on up to anything Oreo, results in the same exact thing
I've tested this for almost 2 days with the exact same result so considering I have a strong signal and it works on that stock 7.1.1 nougat oxygen os, tells me they either screwed something up, forgot something, or changed something which results in slow speeds and hotspot speeds.
Un freeking belivable they still have not fixed this after 2 damn years.
I might also add that the screens of the laptop are hotspot of corse, and the ones that show different are from the speedtest app on my phone and screenshots of that (the ones that show a dial)

New firmware 47.1.A.16.20

Firmware 47.1.A.16.20 available.
It's a big change in the version number but no big changes visible on first look.
It has September security patches included. It's 250MB in size when updating from previous 47.1.A.12.270.
Android version is still 8.0.0.
Got it today on a Customized_DE
So it is apparently only security patches? When is Android Pie expected?

Starting November, as per Sony official announcement.
Feels like the battery is lasting longer again after the last update made it worse. Yes, i did reflash the last firmware with newsflasher, it still was worse than before but now it's fixed again. I flashed it again to try and fix my WIFI issues but i found a solution to it, disabling the option that keeps mobile internet always active while wifi is enabled in developer settings fixed it. It runs like a dream and every problem i had is gone now. Still loving this phone ^^
I read also on other forums that WIFI issues still exist for some users. For me the WIFI connection became a lot more stable, after using the 'Wifi analyser' app and choosing a more quiet Wifi channel !
Yeah JxFx I've had the wifi issues since day one. It's never went away. 2GHz connection is just ass. All the time. 5GHz is absolutely fine. This WiFi analyser app might help in the house, but then when I'm outside connecting to other WiFi networks (like the one at work) it's always ass because it's always 2GHz only. Just lived with it really since I like the Xz Premium so much

In my case this doesn't fix the issue
Hi,
I open Emma application and for my Sony G8141 there are only two available softwares
47.1.a.12.170 and 45.0.a.7.137.
How can I get new software 47.1.a.16.20 for installation in Emma application ?

You can also use FlashTool and download latest firmware inside the app via XperiFirm. There the latest one is available for a lot regions. Maybe your region doesn´t have the latest firmware available.
But you can use every firmware you want.
Which region firmware should I use? I am currently on customized DE, but I'm on att in the USA. I don't use the us oem because that disables Google pay. My problem is Google messages doesn't do group messages without the us oem.
Do any other regions allow group txts? I've only tried customized DE and UK.
Anyone else noticed an issue with latest firmware dropping cellular connection?
After updating to 47.1.A.16.20, my network drops at random times ( 3 - 4 times a day), and I need to restart to get working again. Tried 2 different ROM's, same result.
Had to downgrade to 47.1.A.12.270, which is stable again.
I can report that this update definitely fixed the Bluetooth bug I was having previously. It was not a critical bug, but somewhat annoying. In the past, whenever BT was turned on, it immediately showed that it was "connecting" to all my paired devices at once. Made no sense. After waiting for like a minute, it would stop doing it, I was then able to select the device I was actually trying to connect with, and then it would work normally after that.
After this update, it no longer has any weird behavior. The BT connection works normally.
I cannot comment on cellular connection or WiFi behavior. I have been having spotty cellular connection at work but that's because the T-Mobile coverage is not great in my area. WiFi seems alright before and after update, but I also haven't been paying too much attention because I don't really use my phone much when I'm in WiFi-covered areas anyway (home or work basically).
So it seems that this version will be the last Oreo build, where magisk v18 + xposed systemless 90.2 beta3 (thx to @russel5 patch) work.
Is there a way to update from rooted stock 12.75 without a total wipe?

Which ROM is best if you use your phone mainly as Hotspot?

I am very annoyed now because I can't find a satisfying ROM. I have tried AEX Android v8.1, Jaguar Android v8.1, AEX Android v9.0 and maybe couple. They all seems good but not so good with standby mobile network. A couple of months ago I switched to AEX Android v9.0 from 8.1 but standby mobile network was very quickly draining the battery. So I flashed Jaguar. A couple of days ago I flashed 9.0 AEX again in hope the issue was fixed but the issue still exists. More than 50% of the battery is consumed due to mobile network standby. [Please see the attachment]
Most of the time my Mobile Hotspot and Data is turned on, because I use it to connect to my Computer. Is there any ROM you guys have used which is best in your opinion for:
Battery friendly: This is my main concern. I need a ROM which is best for the purpose of using my device as hotspot. So I have to enable mobile data and hotspot most of the time. My issue with current ROM is addressed above (tldr; they are bad with standby mobile network battery backup).
Best Internet speed : I use Jio. I don't know why internet sometimes keeps dropping with all the ROMS I have used. I have to restart the sim to get high speed again. So maybe a rom which fixed this issue for you.
Android Pie: Preferably based on Android Pie. 7/8/8.1 is okay too, I guess. This is not my main concern.
I believe many people use their phone as hotspot most of the time like me. I and they would thank you if you will help me decide this. TIA :good:!
Try miui 10 nougat. It doesn't have network drain and have very less standby drain

Unreliable LTE signal?

I have tried a number of custom ROMs, Oreo and Pie based. They all have this issue where signal is mostly on zero bars, and it leads to flaky VoIP calls, and low data throughput on LTE. I have read even OOS has this flaky LTE, but it is masked to some extent.
However, I have also heard that some people only have this issue on custom ROMs and not OOS.
• Is there a way to fix the flaky LTE signal, on custom ROMs?
LTE signal used to be so much better, and reliable on Nexus 5, that I never even had to turn on WiFi.

I can confirm that this really seems to affect custom roms more than Oxygen OS. For me this has affected my battery life, and i have a bit of a theory: the way android handles signal is that whatever the system reports as its signal affects what the system believes is the max data throughput (such as if your signal was really a 4G signal but you were being registered as a 3G, Android will only pull data as fast as it can believe a 3G signal can), the power it uses on the cellular antennas ( Less "signal" = more power drain). the reason i have come to think this is because i have been testing this theory on both custom roms and Oxygen OS, and in the same locations with the same kind of usage, and custom roms always seem to suffer the symptoms of a low signal, along with a lower reporting signal than Oxygen OS. This can either be due to custom rom devs using an inferior kernel than Oneplus uses, or its truly due to the signal reporting. i dont believe its the kernel, as this issue has been identical in all the custom roms i've been using (CRDroid, Pheonix, Omni, Treskmod, and even Lineage). now as for a solution....... I'm afraid we might be out of luck most people who COULD help live in higher reception areas so they don't understand how this affects those of us in lower reception ares, so they won't be much help as they don't really care. I can't really help because im in college and have two jobs and can't really afford to take the time to finally learn to develop on android (C++ takes enough time right now as it is)(and even though ive been doing android stuff for 8 years i still havent learned any lawl). and ive looked through our forums and some others and havent really found anything of help to us. If I remember correctly, it seems like Havoc OS would actually do like oxygen OS and "Lie" about the reception, but i dont think its had an update in a while. so i think the best bet is just to keep asking around and maybe someone will see this forum and have some help of some sort.

Thanks for the reply. I wonder if reporting the signal like on OOS would help.
I also have mobile data issues, like voice being muted on VoIP calls, when signal drops to 0 bars.
I hope it gets fixed in custom ROMs.
@codeworkx suggested changing the preferred network type to Global, to an user having LTE signal issues on just custom ROMs.
Looking at the network type in phone info, after dialing *#*#4636#*#*, it appears to be LTE/CDMA/UMTS auto (PRL).

I'll try this again and see, but before I tried this and it didn't really help. AT&T in my area is just horrible and unusable. when I went to D.C. this last summer i had better service and had none of these problems.. maybe someone will make a magisk module that can fix all this...

After setting the preferred network type to Global, LTE signal and throughput seem to be close to what Nexus 5 used to have, in the exact same area and network provider.
Webpages also seem to load a tad faster. I will still keep an eye on the signal today.
I second this. Have been using AEX for a while now and the signal issue persists which makes me want to go back to stock OOS. I get a max of 2 bars and battery life has taken a hit with SOT of 5-6 hrs on average, before it would be between 8-9 hrs. It's a hard price to pay for all the customization but I feel I'll go back to stock so that I can have better call/signal.
I have tried @codeworkx's suggestion but that didn't help much. Hopefully there's a solution soon.
Yeah me too have that issue. At 1st I thought that the tower nearby my area is not proper. But it's the issue with custom rom

What network type do you guys have? I'm on at&t, and I'm gonna try fiddling with apn settings and other stuff and see if there's anything I can figure out, I'm wondering if it's a frequency thing that custom roms struggle with.

Updated to AEX 1.9. Network has improved a lot. I've currently set on Global and I'm getting LTE on Airtel India. Connectivity is on par with stock OOS. If you're on AEX, I'd recommend the update.

Thanks for pointing that out. I looked at the changelog for AEX 1.9, and stumbled upon this change:
https://gitlab.com/APOPHIS9283/frameworks_base/commit/7eee9cb50155c01f03d76f050dd956c9a16abefa
It seems to precisely deal with the signal bars. I guess it's time to request other ROM developers to include this commit in their ROMs.

Found more about this. Apparently Xiaomi phones also have similar signal issues on custom ROMs. Fix is the same as above, but there are other ways of implementing the fix.
https://piunikaweb.com/2019/01/22/x...tual-cellular-signal-strength-from-end-users/
Edit: Apparently Samsung, Google, LG, Xiaomi, OnePlus and possibly other manufacturers have this change made in stock ROMs!
Carbon ROM has a few commits related to fixing flaky LTE signal, that are not the same as ones mentioned above.
Carbon ROM may not have LTE signal issues, too. It needs to be tested though.

But this would only change visual representation of signal what about change in actual signal
I forgot about the testing menu accessed by the activity launcher (I'm using AOSiP) and I changed two options: set my radio band country (in the 3 dot menu) to America, and also changed my network type there to LTE/UMTS (PRL Auto) . The network has been slightly improved, but I may go try AEX and see if it's better there.
https://repo.xposed.info/module/me.hbc.ltemobilesignalfix
Made an xposed module for Android 9 Pie to make the LTE signal behave like on stock ROMs. Apps that optimize behaviour based on Signal Strength tend to actually work better with this. This module should work on all custom ROMs, that do not have this already enabled. (Tested working on AOSiP 9 official)
Apart from most OEMs enabling this by default on stock ROMs, some mobile carriers also enable it on their end.

This cannot be accomplished using a magisk module. However, you can use this xposed module systemlessly. Install riru core and riru edxposed (yafha) from magisk manager.
Then you just need to install edxposed installer, to manage your xposed modules.

ROM with the most stable WiFi hotspot

I'm looking for recommendations for a ROM for the exynos S7 flat that can be reliably left unattended with hotspot enabled. I've tried a couple of lineage OS ROMs and a couple of note FE based ROMs, and I've had problems of one kind or another with the hotspot on all of them.
With the lineage ROMs, it's been that the hotspot will kick connected devices off, and won't let them reconnect again until I turn the hotspot off and on again. This isn't to do with the timeout settings, the hotspot is still active when this happens.
With the NFE ROMs, the phone crashes and reboots sometimes while using the hotspot, more so when plugged in, less often while running from battery. Often it will go for a couple of hours without happening, but it's happened enough times during large, non resumable downloads for it to be a problem.
I'd be happy to roll back to a ROM based on stock oreo if it will give me the stability I need, I rely entirely on my personal hotspot for internet. I would just concede that I'm asking too much from the personal hotspot feature, but I used my galaxy note 3 for years, running official lineage OS, and the hotspot was always extremely reliable.
Thanks.
Strange problem you've got, I use G930FD and I didn't had problems with most ROMs regarding hotspot (except on Slim AOSP Nougat ROM, which was already in the bug list).
You may be having a rare Wi-Fi chip, which requires a specific driver, maybe you should check custom Kernels available for AOSP & Stock-based ROMs.
I used to leave the hotspot on all night downloading stuff on the laptop, and another guy was connecting too. I also use ADB over WI-Fi. It never crashed or did any of what you're saying.

Question Anyone running the A13/MIUI 14 beta? Question about wireless issue.

Have they fixed the issue where wifi cuts out when the mobile data connection is lost? A huge annoyance for android auto users.
Just to be clear, I mean the long running issue with MIUI 12 and 13.
First thing I tested with the xiaomi.eu build on my Poco F3 and nope, it's still broken. Android Auto wireless always disconnects when mobile data reconnects. Every. Single. Time.
Thanks very much for the info. Does the EU build use MIUI 13 firmware?
Extremely disappointing and I can’t understand why they do this. At this point, well over a year later, it must be intentional. They don’t even acknowledge it as a bug. The last hope will be for it to be "fixed" in the stock global final release, but incredibly unlikely at this point.
Probably grab a Pixel 7 then, but might try a custom ROM first.
