I have a N7 2013 that I bought about 4 years ago and I would like to wipe it and start clean. I rooted it as soon as I got the tablet and I'm not sure if the root method matters but it was so long ago I have no idea how I rooted it. It's not modded in any other way, just rooted with stock android 4.4.4
Anyway, the tablet is starting to act funny, crashing certain apps, and I would like to just wipe it and start over. If it were completely stock and unrooted I would just go into recovery and factory reset that way, but I wasn't sure if I can do this with the rooted tablet or if there is a different way. There are so many threads on different websites with different ways to do this and I just want to make sure I'm using the proper method so I don't mess anything up. I don't have anything on it that I am worried about losing, so I can jump right in and start wiping.
What I'm wondering is if there is a way to reset it and keep root, or do I have to unroot first, or just wipe it and re-root? If someone can point me towards a good thread to use that would be great. Any help is appreciated.
If it matters, it also has TWRP v2.7.0.0 installed. I believe that was put in as part of the rooting process.
Try using the Nexus Root Toolkit by Wugfresh it does everything you require and more

Hi.
My son's Galaxy Nexus (Verizon) is having some serious issues. HE has been crack flashing everything under the son (Just like his data) and recently he tried a 4.3 rom (Not sure which one). He started to get random crashes so he flashed back to one of the 4.2.2 rom. Then the phone started crashing all the time so I hooked it up the the Nexus toolkit (I assume it is the one everyone uses) and decided to do a full wipe. The phone was basically two folders and would not boot past the Google logo.
When I hooked it up to the tool kit software it was recognized and I flashed the stock (VZ) rom, no root. When I booted the phone it would go to the start screen looking for WiFi and when I tried to go through the start up process the phone would lock up and reboot. I cannot get past this point to do any troubleshooting.
So is this a hardware issue (The phone is toast) or am I missing something as far as doing a complete wipe to get back to bone stock?
Thank you for your help. (I have as well as my son have been trolling this site and others looking for answers but since I can boot up most did not apply, I think)

Right off the bat, do NOT use toolkits anymore. Please. You need to learn how to use Fastboot.
The best thing to do is start completely fresh. Download latest Galaxy Nexus factory images and fastboot them.
If you have no idea how to use fastboot, I suggest going to this thread and reading up my man: [GUIDE]New To Adb And Fastboot Guide
Any other questions or help I can gladly answer.
Hello all, my First post so please bear with me, Been using these forums for quite a while and all answers have been allready given, so no need to post... till now.
I have a Samsung Galaxy s3 i747 running android 4.1.2 OTA update and used CF-Autoroot. No problems there,
installed Rom manager, and cwm recovery touch. no problem
When I restart in recovery mode, also everything seems fine...
When I try to backup the phone however using cwm recovery it starts backing up everything including system but the just as it starts data the phone restarts.
Tried reinstalling cwm over and over different versions.. nada same result..
went into the settings to mount the various options as suggested to another user. same problem nada...
To be completely clear, I am trying to make a backup of my stock / rooted only Galaxy s3 i747 onto it's own storage NOT SDcard.
as I also could not figure that out either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Erdericks1976
Sorry about misleading Subject. This is about making my first backup successfully..
Followup.
Well seems there are/were more problems here than I thought, it has begun randomly? restarting,..
Well. not Ramdomly. Whem specific apps are run it would restart.
I did a titanium backup and it would backup alot of the apps. but them would restart the phone when it got to 1 specific app.
I think I figured out what I did wrong here.
I have a Galaxy Note 2, and I may have flashed something from it by mistake......
so I have restarted my Gs3 From scratch Re-Following all instructions.. waiting to test and see if CWM works to back it up now..
It sure was faster with the Note2 rooted Kernel though. (if that was in fact what happend)
I'll update soon as its done..
Followup 2
Yep. that musta been it. Used the correct stock (rooted) Rom
OTA updated from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2, then used CF auto root to Re-root, then reinstalled SU and CWM and Backing up now.
Just passed the Data section the phone would always restart at...

good for you, yu got it solved fast and easier than expected, XDA is your place for Android and root but also every kind of OS there is
anywz am not that old in XDA i joined in April and officially started rooting and modifying my phone since May and it has been great, bricked my phone 1st time but all in all i got the S3 in case for the loss. yu'll get used to this place and ROOT/custom roms
So my Galaxy Nexus has served me well, but I'll probably be getting a new phone in the coming months and I'll be giving my GNex to my little sister.
It's stock 4.3, rooted and got CWM. What I want to do is a simple factory reset to make setup simple when I give her the phone. I guess it's better to do it from CWM rather than pressing "Factory reset" in settings and screwing things up but I'm not sure about how to proceed. Can any of you help?
Ofc I'll first be undoing the system changes on the phone before I boot into recovery, like uninstalling xposed, removing Super SU, Avast Anti-Theft and Playstore Legacy from system partition etc. Also, I renamed recovery-from-boot.p to make sure CWM would stick, I guess I don't need to undo that, or do I?
Lastly I'd like to know, will root be removed with factory reset or do I need to remove it manually? I'm fine with the device being unlocked and CWM being installed, but I'd feel safer if root was gone since my little sister is only 13 and has no idea what it is and doesn't need it anyway.
Any help is appreciated
So AT&T completely ruined my phone. They force me to update, and now my phone is basically unusable.
I know problems are running rampant after this update. All of my apps crash and freeze within minutes of opening them (so far I've had to reopen this app 3 times).
Phone itself and Internet (or anything using data, whether it's 4G or Wifi) are super slow now as well.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this thing more than a paperweight?
I had the same issue. The only thing that ended working for me was wiping the phone clean and start fresh.
After that it was working fine.

That's unfortunate. Especially because when I wipe my phone I do it without backup because I want to eliminate any possibility of it screwing up again.
I guess that's the route I have to take though.

the problems are caused by all of your personal apps being installed in a KK environment with dalvik runtime as default, Lollipop uses ART as the default runtime and this tends to cause compatibility issues
Mine seem to speed right back up after a factory reset but i went back to kk for temp root
Is there a permanent downgrade I can do instead of a factory reset?
I also didn't know there was a root out (been a loooooong time since I've worried about it). But if there is, that's what I want to do since I miss my root from my S4

temp root only and it is still in beta, there are a few guides for downgrading in the general forum plus the needed files to do so
Just to clarify, temp root means two things. First, it will unroot if you reboot the phone. Second, devs are still attempting to finalize a non-temp root.

Also if you decided to downgrade (which you can make perm.) it still wipes your phone. If you choose to stay on LP, factory reset as mentioned should remedy your problems.
Either way you will have to do it, unless you just want a screwed phone lol
Ugh. I hate AT&T so much for forced updates. All my stuff, gone. And why? Because they don't want me to be able to root? It's not their problem. I paid for this phone to be mine. So unless they want to give me my 700$ back, they shouldn't be able to force me into a new firmware.
Regardless, that's not the point. Since there's no way to save my stuff, I guess I'll have to wipe it.
Thanks for all the help guys/gals.
Hi all,
I ran into an issue while trying to root my Samsung Galaxy S III. I used a tutorial from Max Lee on Youtube (can't post link) to help me get through the process . There was a step that used Titanium Backup to check if you rooted your phone correctly. However when I downloaded Titanium Backup and tried to open it, I didn't see the superSU request window like it appeared in the tutorial. It was stuck on "asking for root rights..." I decided to reinstall Titanium Backup to see if it would help. After uninstalling it, I realized my Play Store would not load anything. I looked at some other apps and they wouldn't load either (Gmail, Hangouts, some games, etc). I tried logging out and back into my Google account but that didn't work either. A lot of my apps aren't working after attempting to root my phone and I'm not sure what the issue is.
I'm new to this sort of stuff and I couldn't really find an answer for my problem (at least not that I could find on Google). Sorry if this has been asked already! Could anyone tell me what I could do to get my phone back to it's original state at least? I'm kind of afraid to try and root again if I do get a fix for this. Also, factory reset is going to be my last option ;_;.
Samsung Galaxy S III SGH-T999 running Android version 4.1.2
Thanks!
If you can, back up your internal sdcard data. It's very likely you may have to do a factory reset which can erase it.
(BTW, when you get it going again, consider using the free unlock method in the General section. Once you update you can't do it free anymore)
OK, so first, only use what info you find in the T999 forums. Everything you need is here and it's hard to help fix things caused by info gained elsewhere.
Do you have a custom recovery installed? (Twrp or cwm) if so boot recovery and factory reset. This will wipe all apps and data (except internal sd...at least it shouldnt). With luck, this is all you need to do. Reboot and hopefully it'll be working so you can reinstall your stuff. If you have stock recovery, still do this, but it WILL wipe ALL user data).
If that doesn't work, the easiest and most reliable next step is to flash your current firmware build via Odin, and factory reset from settings or stock recovery. (wipes all data).
Then you can unlock and update if you so choose. You can find your firmware and instructions in my firmware thread stickied in the development section. (You'll probably want to use the root66 versions)
If you have any questions feel free to ask. Better safe than sorry. But keep in mind just about everything you could possibly need or want to know has been covered, so don't forget to search for your answers first.
If you still want root after all that, we have several extremely easy options.
Good luck!
