The things nobody tells you about this great phone. - LG V30 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi V30 fans.
I got my V30+ 2 weeks ago and love this phone.
However there were a few things nobody ever mentions in their review like the great vibration motor, the sharp edges at the bottom or the plastic feel of the screen.
That's why I made my own consumer review of the V30. You can watch it here:
https://youtu.be/1Eejb64Cwy8
Did you notice similar flaws with your V30 and how much did they bother you? Cheers

I put a case on my phone, so no sharp edges on mine or my wife's.

None of it bothers me. Other stuff bothers me, not that though.

it doesn't really bother me it's just someting i noticed when I first touched the device but maybe other V30 phones don't have sharp edges. I use a popsocket.
Just a different question: When I set DND to only priority some app notifications like tinder show up even though I did't activate it. Any thoughts?

What bothers me the most is front facing camera, it's hideous, sooooo crappy, my 3 year old htc m9 had a better camera. Other than that I'm super happy with everything this phone has to offer

Lol. No! What weak speaker??
The software experience. I'm coming from a 6p. I also don't love the battery and miss an LED notifier.
Otherwise, phone is great.

Yeah Stock android is always the fastest but honestly I don't understand what's bad about the software. I had the S8 and think Samsung UX is way worse.

A 10+ minute video? Where's the summary? I'm not investing that time, but suspect I could read a transcript of it in 90 seconds.

Really no LED? This is going backwards in time, back to my N6 that had to be rooted to get the notification LED working. This actually might be a deal breaker, leaving me with my HTC 10 until something else with a decent DAC comes onto the market.

I mean I miss it, but the good outweighs the bad on this phone. It's been less of a huge deal then I thought it would be.

Do you use peek? I generally find it distracting, whereas the LED tells me what I was being notified about by color.
Well at least I have a good reason to hold off on upgrading for a few more months now. In any case I'm grateful you mentioned it!

I'm actually kinda liking not looking at the led notifier all for the time.

That's peek - peeks your notifications. At least on other/older phones, the screen turns on when you get a notification and again when it senses motion. I understand the V30's display just stays on all the time.
I guess I just get distracted easily...

I guess the thing is that it was the one thing I was most worried about and, while I miss it, I don't miss it as much as I thought I would.

Alright, first thing I want to clear up is this:
Plastic OLED does NOT mean the display is actually plastic. You CANNOT tell by touching it. You can tell the difference by touching the S8 and the V30? Both are glass! LOL.. Also, AMOLED is what Samsung calls its OLED displays. There's no LG AMOLED panel. So its not "plastic AMOLED", its just p-OLED.
Now, for the most important part about this topic, all recent OLED panels that have any kind of flexibility/curve are ALL plastic substrate OLED panels. Including the AMOLED panels on the recent Samsung S and Note devices. LG calls it pOLED (stupid choice for a name tbh, it causes this exact sort of misunderstanding!). So, the "plastic" just refers to the plastic substrate layer instead of the glass substrate layer used on OLEDs prior to the flexible displays. It's under the glass and digitizer, its part of the actual display panel, so there's no way you can tell the difference by touching or looking at it.
I agree about the sharp edges on the USB port, SIM tray cutout and headphone jack, it's one of the first things I noticed. Not an issue really, but feels like someone forgot to grind the edges down.
The speaker is plenty loud for notifications or the occasional Youtube video for me. I NEVER play music on a phone speaker and if I'm going to watch something, I almost always use my earphones. So, personally, it's a non-issue as long as I don't miss notifications.
Good review overall mate, just make sure you do the necessary research (doesn't take more than a few mins) and avoid making assumptions. Cheers!

Quick review after having the Lumia 900 for 5 days...

I wanted to take the time to post a few pros and cons for those considering the device and answer some questions for those that have them. So here we go...
Pros:
- The build quality is absolutely superb; Nokia has always nailed this and the Lumia 900 doesn't leave anything to be desired.
- Antenna is strong. I went to some known problem areas and I had no drops. Typically Samsung and Nokia are the strongest in terms of reception quality. I'm glad I can experience Nokia antenna's in the states again!
- The clear black display technology lives up to all the hype. Outdoor visability is fantastic.
- Overall stability and speed is excellent, partly due to WP7, but much more zip than the Focus that I have also used.
- Speaker is strong and has decent range.
- Typical excellent Nokia voice quality, both for me and those I call.
- Battery life is excellent...although I find myself playing with the thing all day. Overall it holds up pretty well to the task.
- Front camera is excellent.
- Stylish if you are the stylish type!
Cons:
- The back 8MP camera is a letdown. I talked with a Nokia rep that said this was a known issue and that it will be fixed in a software push. I have read good things about the N9 camera so I expect this to be fixed. Will keep you guys posted.
- The bluetooth randomly disconnects and then reconnects. Not typically and issue but my bluetooth (Motorola Elite Silver) likes to talk to me and let me know when it disconnects and connects...so a little annoying! Might be a WP7 issue though as my Focus was never the best at bluetooth either.
- Although the speaker sounds great, its lowest volume setting is too loud. I often put some music on when I hit the sack, and it seems that the range of sound doesn't go low enough for a quiet room. The difference between 15 and 1 is negligible. Might not matter to some but I thought I would mention it.
Overall so far:
I am liking this phone more and more everyday. The looks, build quality, Display, and phone performance have been excellent. It feels nice having a solid, well built phone in my hands as opposed to the plastic-y Samsung models. The camera on the back disappoints me but the promise of a software fix eases my mind somewhat. I seriously believe if they can fix the camera we will have a perfect phone on our hands.
I will update as I discover new things I love or hate. If you have any questions I can answer them and I will try to do so in a timely fashion. I hope I could help some of you out!
Very informative post. Thanks for all of the great info! I was worried about the camera after checking out an AT&T sales reps Lumia 900 a few days ago. The pictures were all a little grainy to me. I really hope that a software update can resolve the issue. It seems like that's reasonable given that they are really hyping the 8MP Carl Zeiss lens.
I'd like to see some heavy testing on the battery. On full charge, us WPBench app and test battery. Thanks for your insight.

I got an hour yesterday with a Cyan 900 and 800. Both are great. I'm not a big picture taker, so I didn't see a problem with the camera. The concern for me was the weight. Yes, the 900 is a touch heavier than what I currently carry...Focus S. But, what was amazing was the balance. The phone fits and stays in my hand, like it should. Carrying the really light Focus S, I have dropped it a couple of times....the balance is off. Hand the same thing with the Motoroal Razr...though this was fixed with the Razr Maxx.
I was sold months ago on the WP7 OS. I only needed to find hte hardware to fit my likes. The 900 is it.
I also got to see, but not touch the White 900. The thing is purdy. REALLY purdy. If you want a white one, its worth the wait. I'm not willing to wait a few extra weeks. But if it was offered now, I'd be getting that. The black on White color combination and the impace with variouis screen themes.....oh man!!! not for everyone.....but....nice.

I noticed this as well. It is a bother... needs more range. To me, it should get whisper quiet before the sound disappears altogether.

I wanted a white one, but the cyan is sexy too. I also didn't want to wait, as I wanted to get the $100 connectivity issue credit (though I'm having no problem with LTE in STL.
I've just gotten the phone yesterday, so I'm still figuring things out. It's my first WP. LOVING the build and quality of the phone. Signal has been excellent. Connecting to my work wifi is amazingly fast and just WORKS, when it was a PITA with my android.
Some of my cons so far:
-The speaker volume that you mentioned.
-I want the status icons to stay and not disappear. I don't want to swipe to see them.
-Not being able to set custom alerts for text messages for my contacts. I want a different alert if my kids are texting me vs. a friend.
-This is probably me just being dumb, but how to you go back/forward in the browser?

Somehow I missed the memo until yesterday that the white one is a gloss finish!! This makes m less excited for it and I was just wondering what you thought of its look?
More so than the look difference its the scratch and fingerprint difference that gives me pause

You know, I didn't pay that much attention to that detail. I usually don't care about the glass finish. NO matter what finish you have, there's something that doesn't work out. So, if I got the white, the glass or matte would not be an impact on my decision. Though, a matte white...might not be that attractive...hmmm...didn't think of that...

Have you turned on "desktop version" vs. "mobile version" in IE preferences? It looks much better in the full version. Though of course it takes things longer to load.

My worry is that the gloss finish will be much easier to damage than the matter. I also Ike the understated look of the matte. I'm not eligible for upgrade til may so u will get some hands on before purchase but right now I'm leaning toward a black one with a case.

I'm thinking of getting this case. That way I'll have some white (which will contrast nicely with the blue), but if the white gloss sucks or gets scratched, it's just a case.

Easier to damage cause it's glossy so a bit less grippy? Also wouldn't the white finish hide fingerprints better than black matte?
Also having the phone in white tricks the eye into believing it's bigger than say black. So a white 900 will be even bigger than it already is lol
Oh goodness, now this is something that really bothers me. One volume, WP7, really? You mean if I'm listening to media, but I want my ringtone/alert volume low, this is impossible? No separate media volume? Not to mention not being able to have a different volume for phone calls and texts. I'm sitting here at work trying to listen to music over headphones, and have to annoy my coworkers with my text and email notifications? Am I missing something?

I tootally agree with you. This may be one of the areas that WP7 's simplification leads to frustration.
BTW for all of those talking about the white phone, on the Verge mobile netcast, Vlad mentioned that the HTC One X was a matte finish and noticed that his jeans' dye rubbed onto the phone. I think the gloss is probably to prevent color absorption.

Well the gloss has been described as a more enamel feel to it. Anytime I have had a shiny device like that it is prone to get scratched really easy. They are both carbonate bodies but the gloss finish makes me think the way the device would react to sharp objects more harshly.
I will admit I don't know exactly how to describe what I am trying to say here haha. But nonetheless it's something I hope to be wrong about but we shall see. Also the gloss finish will reflect more light thereby making fingerprints far more obvious. My favorite part about the matte finish compared to gloss ones is its low reflectability. Hopefully I'll get my hands on it and find this is all much to do about nothing but I was just hoping someone had more insight into this matter.

If you have headphones on it should be playing only through the headphones. At least that's what my focus does. Also you could just put it on vibrate and it will not sound off. Hope this helps!

Got my ZL today...

...and will send it back tomorrow.
It's a pity, the display is even worse than my 2 year old LG optimus speed, and I'm not talking about the viewing angles. Colours are washed out far more as expected, the icons look terrible compared to my old phone. I tried to calibrate the display as mentioned somwhere here, didn't get better.
Besides the display the vibration sucks. I like typing text with a little vibration, but ZL is far too loud. I cant't feel vibration, I just hear it.
I wanted a new phone to make a step forward, but not in this direction...
Damn,I'm really disappointed, I thought this is THE phone for me...

I think you mean realistic display rather than over saturated crap that's on most phones. I actually find the display
Temperature with the styling quite mature and refreshing.
The vibration needs some tweaking but it's not a deal breaker.

Vibration can be set to low there's an option in the menu, seems like you never liked the zl from the start. Most of things you are complaining can be fixed, well except the viewing angles

I find it comical that members feel the need to open a new thread only to voice their displeasure. Thanks for your opinion and best of luck with whichever device you obtain next. I wish I had such trivial things to fixate on as vibration sensation.
I had a previous unit where the vibration was loud it made a very cheap sound. I eventually replaced the unit due to a bad camera everything was noisy. My new unit is much better, the vibration is no longer strange in any way. Maybe some bad units going around.

Lol... yes, that's why i bought it...
Do you mean the colors are washed out head on? If thats the case, then you should try getting a different unit. My screen looks really good. Its only when you tilt it does the screen wash out real quick. It sucks and detracts the quality of the phone, but the pros of the ZL far outweigh something which wont matter to me as i rarely look at the screen from an angle.
As for the vibration, I didn't notice yet before you mentioned it. But yes, it does seem a little weak.
I got my phone like 3 days ago, not having any issues with it. Screen looks great while watching videos or playing games. I don't need that blue tint or any of those oversaturated crap.

Yep, thats why I absolutely detest AMOLED screens! However, no reason Sony couldnt have put in a LCD that looks as good as the One X. The screen on that phone is spectacular

+1, no need for a new thread.. if it was an in-depth review that's another story...
up to the user
I just read this thread now and I agree good luck to you on whichever phone you like and hopefully it is all you want it to be.
I have now gotten into a seemingly 6 months or less cycle before I decide to try something new...ugh
The only thing I have to say is having an unlocked phone is so much better as you are not tied into the cell providers Android update cycle (if they want it) and their bloatware.
One more thing, having had a note I am not a fan in general of the crazy colore on the AMOLED screens.
As it is it is a feeling - I just love my ZL (and my Nexus 4 is going bye bye - I do have a Nexus 10)

As compare to Nexus 4,How is looking your Xperia ZL Colors(I'm not asking about viewing angle), is it possible to Put Stock Android in Zl if yes anyone try it,How the experience feel with stock?
hmm
Those over saturated screens make the screen look amazing. Why did you guys choose to get an xperia? I'd rather get the s4 because its easier to root and plus there's always a ton of ROMs for it
I like Sony for their design. If samsung would change the design from plastic to something better then I wouldn't mind buying one from Samsung. The phone feel too light and like holding a toy in your hand...

The colors seem very comparable, neither phone has over-saturated colors. The ZL screen is gorgeous, but if you are looking for a deal, the Nexus is it for 350.

Screen tech is a matter of personal choice. Those over saturated colors give me a raging headache if i look at the screen for a long time, i.e playing games, watching movies. I dont know how exactly to put this but LCD screens just LOOK more sophisticated and toned down. Uhh, like a printed sheet of paper. Unlike AMOLED which looks like a kindergarten kid went wild with crayons on the screen.
And Samsung phones easier to root? Building ROMS for them are a PITA. Ask every single dev who has completely abandoned Samsung phones. there might be plenty of ROMs sure, but all of them have some or the other problem. Not to mention the fact that Samsung are a bunch of liars.

So goodbye sony community!

Completely agree, here. I came to the ZL from nothing but Samsung phones (Captivate, Galaxy Nexus, SGS3), and I much prefer the ZL's screen to any Samsung phone screen. For one, I can never read Sammy screens when outdoors on a cloudless sunny day, even with the brightness at maximum. I have had no issues reading the ZL screen in the same conditions, which I'll take over better viewing angles and oversaturated colors any day. As for comparing to LG screens, well, if I'm not mistaken, LG also makes amoled screens, so I wouldn't expect much different than Sammy screens there -- last I checked, the two were suing each other over the technology. The ZL compared to the N4 -- I must say, I finally saw an N4 in person this past weekend, and the screen on it is quite beautiful. I still like my ZL, though, and the lack of LTE radios in the N4 makes it a non-issue for me, no matter how pretty the phone might be (and I'm not keen on a glass back anyways).
I do agree that it would have been great had Sony used something as nice as the LCD in the One X, though. That screen was amazing looking (I had the pleasure of seeing one in person when my brother had a One X for awhile).
Good luck to the OP in finding a device that meets those expectations -- the ZL is the first AT&T LTE capable unlocked phone to hit the USA, and that's a big part of why it intrigued me, too. I suspect it'll be awhile before there's another device like that ...

[Q]How bright are your touch keys?

Are they bright or dim? I remember my first Note 3 had brighter touch keys than the one I'm currently using. This kind of bothers me but I don't want to make any decisions just yet because the Note 3's are very inconsistent and I don't want another with more problems and find out all Note 3 have dim buttons. :silly:
Edit: Pictures added. This 5mp camera on my LG-v909 does no justice haha but as you can see its very low. The touch keys are brighter in the photos but IRL they look very dark and washed out.

Looks pretty much normal to me. I'm no lighting expert, but looks the same as mine giving it's pics and not side by side.
Not sure how you would be able to rate this without having two phones side by side to know for sure unless it was a drastic difference.
I can't see anything wrong with the images you posted, look normal to me.
It looks normal to me to. I sort of feel like other Galaxy devices were brighter. The note looks good either way though.
Also, if they were brighter they would probably be more annoying/noticeable. I think I remember looking down at them on the Note II a lot more.
The white is really bright, the black is dimmer. Its the same on all of them in my experience.

I tend to agree with this. My GSII was black, and they weren't that bright, but my Note 3 is white, and they are so bright it makes the screen look dim when they are on even with the screen brightness at 50%. Forget at night. They blind me! LOL
I disabled them on my white Note 3 as they shine bright and bleed quite a bit.

Yeah, they do bleed.
I just started a thread about the issue I'm having with mine: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50144333
I might just turn the lights off, very bright. Should be an option to dim them.
My black Note3 is just fine. My old white SGS3, though, bled a bit in pitch black darkness, but it didn't really care because it was so subtle and not worth complaining about (SOME people actually returned their phones over it *hah*).
Anyway, I really wish the Note4 would ditch capacitive buttons, then how bright they are is a non-issue. I want my next phablet to have onscreen nav buttons, like the direction LG and Moto are going.

I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but why not get the phone that has the features you want like above mentioned LG or Moto? I want hardware buttons so I have full use of the screen and that's part of the reason I picked Note 3 over other phablets and unless there is no bezel at all, I would be disappointed if part of the screen was wasted for things that could be off screen. If LG and Moto are trying to save few cents on hardware buttons, among other things, that's fine, but that's part of the reason I won't buy them.
Going back to the topic, as far as I can tell from the pictures it looks fine, similar in brightness to the screen icons, probably that's how I would want them, but honestly isn't it a little nit picking? I would never return the phone for such a minor thing since by now I don't even look at it no more, I know by heart where it is and yep there is a chance new phone could have some other problems, like crooked button for example. I'm sure there is a setting where it could be adjusted, especially if it's true that black Note 3 has lower setting than white, but not in user accessible menu.
Maybe developers could figure it out?

Because Samsung still features a removable battery and microSDXC slot. That's really the main reason I've stuck with 'em.
(And software nav buttons really take up almost no space (and even less when configurable in the ROM); zero in immersive mode. I'd rather have the phone physically shrink w/o h/w buttons.)

You say almost no space but in reality it takes up .2" of screen. So a Moto X goes from 4.7" to 4.5". A Note 3 would go from 5.7" to 5.5" which is the same as the Note 2, effectively erasing the size difference between the 2 phones.
I personally don't want on screen nav buttons. If I'm buying a 5.7" screen I want to use 5.7". I understand some people may have other preferences, but the screen is the #1 feature of a phone, you look at and touch it 100% of the time.
I don't even know how on screen system buttons work, since I never had one, but if they permanently cut off 0.2 inch off screen , NO WAY. This would mess up everything: all the 16:9 1080p movies are then 1020p with border all around or are they no longer proper 16:9 ratio? Is the edge of the movie just cut off, or is every single frame rescaled to fit smaller area? And why would I ever want to have this, to admire huge empty bezel? Or to have more fingerprints and smudges on my screen
And yes exactly, all those companies cut out SD card slot, removable battery and hardware buttons most likely to save few pennies. So Samsung has my money.
I turn soft key lights OFF!
I cannot possibly forget that menu is one side and back is on the other. The fact that I'm reading about this "bleeding" being an issue is manna from Heaven. I don't understand why anybody would keep them on! Not to mention night use.

No the Nav Buttons disappear when playing a movie. But when using the phone they are there so they become intrusive in my opinion.

Huawei watch display comparison

Hey guys, I work for best buy and bought the huawei watch after some reps for the company came in to show us the Mate 7 and the watch. I ordered the mesh band and love the subtlty of the watch, but I noticed the colors are quite muted for an amoled panel compared to the urbane I had. Can anyone compare the two for me to prove I'm not crazy? Like with a Facebook notification comparison? The blues I'm sure are distinctly different between the two panels. Just want to make sure I don't have a faulty panel.

Disagree about the lugs, looks like most big high end watches today. I thought I would like the higher resolution and .1 in bigger display on the huawei, but I don't. Bummer.

I agree with what you are saying about the looks on the lugs. Me with my ridiculously small guy wrists means it really stands out at least on my arm. Apple watch is like the square version of huawei that's why I like the size so much.
I agree with the screen quality and noticed it right away. (not that you still think you're crazy now, lol) Having said that, I am keeping mine because I like how it looks in dim mode, which is what displays 99% of the time. Yes, I still find my Urbane and LGR better but this is still a very nice screen IMO...just needs a color calibration.

That's what I like about the Huawei. IMO, the Urbane looks like a smartwatch only because the Bezel was just thrown in there, should've been raised! (I still like it) The LGR is much better and looks/feels like a regular watch! Of course to me the winner is the Huawei but the LGR is a close second! I switch watches daily anyway, lol.
Just went back to my urbane, The screen is SO much better. Not sure WTF huawei did with this screen, but its pale colors, and dim brightness are a dealbreaker. Maybe if I didnt own an urbane, I wouldnt know what i am missing.

Edit: referring to the red tint thing.
Edit again: OK, I was able to reproduce the red tint. Don't think its a big deal at this point unless the red sub-pixels burn out.

I think whether or not it's a big deal is definitely an opinion that changes per user and that's fine. Right now I'm just trying to confirm that is does affect all devices.
Bottom line is it is a defect and not how OLED is supposed to work. It bothers me personally for a few reasons but Huawei has yet to give details on why it is happening and how it can be fixed so I don't know if I should return my watch or keep and hope.
I almost wonder if it is some kind of dumb underflow issue. Or, they intentionally add a little red to the screen to enhance low light visibility, but over simplified the approach a bit too much. Or the driver for the screen leaks some voltage. Who knows at this point.

Green tint on greys

Is this normal? Greys have a green tint which is really noticeable on low brightness. Is this a limitation of AMOLED? But I don't recall this issue on my 6P or Note 4.
Hmm. Not having this issue...
Greys are really greenish. Though it happens only at some certain brightness level (a little more than the lowest).
The panel apparently is of low quality and has issues with greys. It's detailed in the anandtech.com review
Not noticing this on mine either.

Guess that answers that, cheers!. (although mine might be right side of the screen, not bottom)
On my phone, the bottom part is also "greener" than the upper part. This is especially visible when brightness is set low (which I do when not outside, because it totally suffices).
Do more people have this problem?
Would returning the unit and getting a new OP3 make sense, or are these unevennesses typical??

I'm wondering if it's just an AMOLED thing... If it's really really bad then you may be better off RMA-ing it of course.

The findings on Anandtech have nothing to do with the quality and everything to do with the calibration, which is just software.
Hi, is it darker like the pics from my thread? I think I have the same issue on my display, just at the middle of the screen.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/help/dark-line-oled-screen-t3402293
One thought came to me: In the upper half of the OP3 are the parts which get warm when the phone "works". Perhaps the part of the screen which is warmed up regularly loses a bit of green tint, while the lower, colder part remains as it is??? Just a thought...
I get a weird purpley/dark colour on greys and when scrolling white font on black background, but only on minimum brightness.
After reducing brightness below a threshold (just above the minimum) the colours across the display seem to shift
Sent from my ONEPLUS A3003 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I got my replacement phone today. And. The display is even more worse. The colors are uneven, like some of them have here. The bottom is greener and the top slighlty pinkier/the correct color.
Argh. That's what I'm afraid of (sent my device in for replacement on Saturday):
That, as a replacement, simply someone grabs a box with a new device and sends it to me, without testing.
Edios, what did you write in the service request as your reason why you want a replacement? Did you write about the display problems?
Welcome to the lottery...
Does anyone know: If the 2nd device also has a defect, and the 14 day return time since I got the 1st device is already over, can I demand from Oneplus that they take back the 2nd device and that I get my money back??

I didn't even mention the issues, Amazon immediately gave me a replacement.
The problem is, they provide only a single replacement and now insisting to give a refund. But I want this device cos there's no other device that I'm interested in. And it's out of stock also.
For what it's worth, these sound like typical AMOLED issues. There are long threads in the Galaxy S6, S7, etc. forums with people experiencing the exact same thing. AMOLEDs just seem to not be as consistent as LCDs in the quality control department and it's always just the luck of the draw whether you get one with green or pink tints or not.
