Viewing Moto Z Play on an external monitor - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

This morning I had woken up to find my Moto Z Play screen was completely gone (rough night out? Nope my little brother stepped on it whilst it was on the floor by the couch I was sleeping on). I have insurance for the phone but in the mean time I was wondering if it is possible to view the phone through an external display monitor on my Linux computer? All this would have to be done via terminal connection to the device as I have no screen and no way of knowing what I'm tapping.
Is this possible?

Search here on xda for thread with the name something like: control your device with broken screen. Helped me few years back when digitizer got broken.
Ok, I googled for you:

A100 reacts badly to cold

I left my A100 in my purse in the car for a few hours. It was about -5C outside.
When I took my purse inside, and woke up my tablet, it started acting up.
The touch screen acted as if there were multiple touches at various places. Icons on the desktop would appear to be selected, and apps would open and close randomly.
Eventually it calmed down after warming up to room temperature.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour? Is this a normal effect on capacitive touch screens?
Does not even need to be this cold... I left the tablet on the floor of my bedroom for the night, and the same thing append to me... ( the floor get cold during night... )

This is not suprising, all devices have a normal operating tempature and your lucky your device wasnt damaged. It would be the equivlant of sticking your phone in the freezer. If there was any humidity built up in your device it could have formed ice crystals on the internal components and wreaked havok.

Similar to this?

It has usually been in the mornings when acting this way. I thought we had this pinned as the digitizer, but it sounded rather familiar to my issue.
Edit: After a trip to the freezer for a couple minus, i can confirm the actions from my video are caused by the cold.
Guess i can call Acer back to cancel my work order.

My A100 used spaz out in the the exact same manner as shown in the above youtube video, the exact same area of the screen (lower right). When I say "used to", I mean it still happens from time-to-time but less often. I keep it on my office desk most the time now so it doesn't have wild changes in temps.
I actually somehow lost my 'system tray' from it spazzing out, I haven't been able to find a way to get it back, and am not interested in factory resetting it.
Originally I attributed it to my ZAGG screen protector messing with the touch detection. But it does seem to be attributed to temperature. However I've never left the thing outside in my car overnight in extreme cold.

No, i never have left it outside freezing, and i only put it in the freeze for a minute to test it. Most of my occurrences are in the morning. Prolly 65 in the house, 40_50 outside. Go outside to read the news and drink coffee. Usually dies fine till i set it down for a few and come back to it. Doesn't have to be extreme cold it seems. I still believe it's digitizer related, but maybe only sure to cooler temps.

It's funny you mention the system tray is hidden, because I swear the floor model at BB was like that, I think from swiping up and down on the home screen. I'll have to go back there and check it again.

If you ever figure that out, I'd love to know what you did to replicate it.

[Q] Conundrum, take phone apart or is there another method?

My brother recently broke his GS3 (dropped it and cracked the screen and digitizer). I have been looking for a project phone to turn into a remote cell switch to turn on a heater and some other electronics at a storage place not near my house (hence it will be warm when I get there).
The problem is that he didn't have the debugging turned on. After some searching on the forum, I don't think I will be able to root it and restore it since the screen is completely blank. I also own a GS3 that works. I tried connecting the HDMI connector to the broken phone to see if I could get it to display on a television. This did not work.
My question is... is it possible to root his phone and get it going? I am not worried at all about preserving any data on the phone. Or is this impossible because the screen is cracked? Is it easy to disassemble the GS3 and use the working touch screen on my phone to boot his and start the rooting process? I would prefer not to do this since my phone functions properly, but would be willing to try. I watched a couple tear down videos and it doesn't seem overly complicated, I just hate to destroy a working phone.
Let me know your thoughts...

1) First, as it goes goes online.
2) What you propose (switching the boards and hooking up the screen and the other necessary parts is entirely doable.
If you were to do that, you'd need to find a way to eventually replace the phone's broken parts so you don't have to switch boards just to use it as this test device you propose.

Yeah, I have been doing research for awhile now to see if I could do it without taking my good phone apart. However, most of the guides that I found required using ADB and having a phone with debugging turned on. I was trying to find a last ditch effort before I decided to take the phone apart.
I should only have to swap the board once, right? Once the device is rooted, I should be able to connected it to a computer and control it that way?
For a better understanding of the project. I have built a test board with some transistors that accepts a standard headphone jack. Using my phone, I have been able to get a square wave to trip on a standard Christmas light timer that will run for 2/4/6/8 hours before automatically turning off. My plan was to set the phone to silent, and use the configurable ringtones to allow me to create a whitelist of friends that can remotely warm up the garage. I found a BYOD provider (ting) that is a pay as you go service that uses old sprint phones. Since the screen is cracked and cannot be answered, it is a perfect device to sit on a shelf. Thoughts?
Okay. So, I took the phone apart and managed to Frankenstein the two devices together so that I could get a working touchscreen.
I have rooted the phone into cyanogen mod 10.2. Using a tasker function, I am able to get it to activate the media player and trip the activation sound and turn on the pre heater.
I have two more current problems....
1.) I couldn't get the tasker (condi previously MiniTasker) to play the sound based on incoming calls. What is happening is a call from the "whitelist" will cause the phone to reboot. On the reboot, the tasker will cause the media player to open and play the file. Is there another way to do this? The current problem is anything the causes the device to "reboot" will turn the heater on. Again not a big deal since it is on a 2 hour timer.
2.) I couldn't get a screen share program to work. When I was on the stock samsung rom, I was able to get screen share but not screen control. I tried using several different applications (screencast / [email protected]) Does anyone know one that will work well with our phone? Changing the custom rom to a different one is fine (cant see it anyway because the screen is broken/blank). It would be great to see the screen every now and then as a diagnostic tool.
Thanks for the info!
Why not just buy a bad enough from eBay. Then you would have all the parts you need.

Do you mean buy a phone that has a working screen?
I don't want to spend a ton of money on this project and once it is complete it is going to spend most of its life plugged into a charger next to the wall.

moto 360 screen goes black randomly

Hi,
I have had my moto 360 for about a week.
Since day 1 the moto 360 vibrates and goes black when im scrolling and making adjustments. I cant do anything without it turning the screen of and then i have to wake it up and do it all over again or again and again untill i make it.
i have tried connecting it to both LG G3 and Note 4 with a Reset. Im not out of range from the phone when it happens. I can be sitting in the sofa or working on the computer. Does not matter where or when.
Its like the Moto 360 Registers my finger as a "Turn off gesture" and its f*****g annoying.
Should it really be like this?
Moto 360 does have a gesture to turn off screen where you place your hand over the device to make it sleep
You might be doin this by accident maybe your fingers are big and cover the abient sensor at the same time you touch or might bw the way your touching it

Moto Z Play was partially submerged in water, condition deteriorated, won't turn on

My wife dropped her Moto Z Play into a puddle and the bottom half of the phone was submerged. Initially the phone continued to work and she wasn't concerned, so she did not properly dry the phone off. Eventually the screen stopped working and she plugged it in before she told me about it. I dried the phone off as best I could, removing the cover and taking out the sim card. I placed it into rice, where it has been for about a week now. The phone will not power on at all, it makes no noises when plugged in (the phone usually makes a high pitched, very quiet tone when charging). The forward facing light does blink white when it is plugged in but it makes no other response. I do not know what that means and I have not seen anything about it at any forums. The battery is not removable. Any suggestions on what to do now and any explanation on what the blinking white light means? Thanks
same exact situation...
Same thing happened to a friends' moto z play this weekend when she was tubing at a local river. The battery had died so her's was not on when it hit the water and was only submerged for a few seconds. She dried it off best she could and plugged the charger in to see if it would charge. It just blinks the white light on the front three times and then the battery lightning bolt graphic displays momentarily and repeats this. Phone will not turn on as well. We haven't left it on the charger for any period longer than a minute or two. Found this thread, looking for similar situations hopefully for a solution.
FWIW - we did find this youtube video water testing the Z play and it seems as though this phone should be relative water resistant.
since i haven't made 10 posts I cant include url but if you enter watch?v=dxvLKskmkg8 after you tube dot com you can find that video. THIS IS NOT SPAM and very relevant to this thread.
Thanks for sharing @ABTF16 anyhow... Hopefully someone knowledgeable to this scenario will be able to provide an answer at some point in the near future.

Quite weird!
It passes the water test with no problem.
Speaker working fine camera working fine touch working fine.??
And in the video he said that the Motorola claims that it has advanced nano coating technology which can protect it from accidental spills or splashes.
Trust me, my Moto X Force went the same way
One second drop in water, it was upright and it was only the bottom inch and for less than one second as I immediately removed it, continued to work for the rest of the day but died in the evening and would not turn on
Sent to Moto and returned with 'unit beyond economical repair' along with a photo and half of the components were corroded
WTF!! one second in water
Don't get me wrong I love Moto's (I have a Z Play now) but they are rubbish if they even get moist
If your phone gets wet you are supposed to leave it off for at least a day in a dry area. I left mine in a hot car with leather seats. You need to let all the components dry out. You could achieve the same affect with a hair dryer.
Turning it on, or trying to charge it is no good idea.

I had accidently taken my MZP under a running tap and with the pressure the water went all the way inside my MZP but then at first it worked fine for 1 hour or less. Then it switched off automatically and started rebooting. I still managed to get it on then it started to show results like camera stopped working and fingerprint scanner stopped working. I shaked the phone and then removed the water which was remaining. Then I managed to switch it off and then put it in rice for 2 days. After that its working fine, only fingerprint scanner was not working but yesterday it started working and now everything is back to normal. Try isopropyl alcohol which is 99% pure alcohol and then dip your phone in and then put it again for 2 days in rice. I hope this works. However I just needed rice to do its work and mine worked. Hope yours work but if its damaged go to the service centre asap.

Blank screen issue

Alright so, after a lot of researching, I haven't found a solution to this
The Phone is fairly new, always used a case, didn't drop too hard ever
..a few days ago the phone just went black, with a few thin vertical lines still lit (this means it must be a hardware problem)
Anyways, before giving it back for warranty, I wanted to pull some data off of it
I can hear the phone turn on, it vibrates when I press the finger print sensor, but first time unlocking requires the code which I can't get to unlock.
I tried to put another Moto Z play beside it and try to guess the number pad location but failed.
so now, I cant connect the phone to a PC
-USB debugging was off
-boot loader locked
and I dont have a Type-C to HDMI cable (yet)
help
also, I tried everything mentioned in this post, but failed
Display has gone.
Many Z Play users had this problem.
Let it get repaired in the service centre.
I took it to the service center, the screen was cracked from the inside.
No idea how, I had a case on it, and it didnt fall
and warranty doesnt cover it...eh
You can choose to replace the screen of a new moto z play yourself. It is very easy. My moto z play is broken. The screen is not touchable. I found a moto z play scree repair guide on the internet. I looked at the replacement. The new screen is very good.
