unlock, root, flash rom vs stock - OnePlus 5T Questions & Answers

getting a oneplus 5t, what is the stock experience like? I feel like I'm tried of flashing different roms and want the ease of stock. coming from a nexus 6 which was rooted from day 1 will I be good with a stock 5t experience? thanks!

I have been using HTC m7, Galaxy S6, and 5T. All phones I have are flashable, and I have flashed many rooms. But to me, the stock rom of 5T is excellent. I chose to stay with it.
通过我的 ONEPLUS A5010 上的 Tapatalk发言

me too, usually i root every single phone I had and in most cases I flash, but customisations I need the most, all are shipped with the stock on 5t. that would leave ad blocking left for root which is solved using blokada so for now I'm un rooted and satisfied with stock.

I sense a trend! I rooted and flashed all my phones BUT haven't yet with 5T.
My plan is enjoy stock Nougat till stable Oreo arrives. Then, might root and/or flash ROMs.
But, lemme say this is my 1st OP device & the community is awesome & active. I feel like I never left the Nexus 6P forums

I have gone through two AOSP ROMs on the 5T already (OmniROM and Liquid Remix) and uhh...I mean, OxygenOS is actually really good, since it runs well, has great battery life and looks very close to stock, but as a bit of a design snob, I just couldn't stand having white notifications while the rest of most of everything was themed black, so I ended up getting on AOSP and going back to Substratum. Beyond that, I also switched AOSP ROMs because the one I'm using right now has a nav bar called Fling, which is just a personal thing I like.
Overall, the stock experience on the 5T is fantastic. There is really no strong reason to upgrade, but I'm just kind of a purist.

Why do people prefer switching back to Stock ROM?

I'm not a PRO in Android but still, why do some people say "Stock is the way to go"? Because of stability? Less bugs?
it just works.
Because a group of coders have decided what you can or cannot do; took away your freedom. As such, we are human beings and like being confined within boundaries.
So some people like going back to stock.
If you have chosen android, root and go custom and just muck about and explore and learn; the possibilities are endless

me personally, it isn't worth trading speed and stability for a few extra buttons. but this is all opinions. maybe you should try a few things and form your own opinion of it and not worry about it.

Because no feature in a custom ROM is worth the time it will take constantly set it up, troubleshoot, endless flashing, and OCD like symptoms.
Stock JB is just too good to mess with it. I unlock and root my devices once I stop getting official updates. I have tried many ROMs, kernels on my GNEX and Nexus 7 and I always go back to stock.
Locked bootloader, no root, encrypted. It just feels good. Plus, if you purchase a new device, all you would have to do is login to your Google account and voila!

Stock ROMs are great, when JB first came out and before there were AOSP builds I rocked a rooted + BB stock image for a few weeks and thought it was great. I was able to fill in a lot of the missing ROM customization with apps (quiet hours, battery %, toggles, etc...). Smooth, fast, and reliable.
At the end of the day however a ROM built from AOSP source with some tweaks on top is the way to go for me.
Because stock is actually a really good stable feature-rich software package.
Stable, fast, no weird scripts nor heavily themed just pure android experience

for me, it just worked. Nothing had to be fiddled with and no headaches about small details. Being able to enjoy your device for what it is, is such a great feeling compared to constantly flashing updates and whatnot.
I run TSF shell launcher so no need for UI tweeks and stock is fine although I do mix it up with a Franco kernel.

I love stock ROMs. I wish more devs would simply tweak and compile straight aosp ROMs instead of cramming them full of features. Variety is a nice novelty but it wears off quickly reboot after reboot and fc after fc.
And on the same note I know its personal preference, but stock android looks so sleek and clean now that all themes seem just plain ugly. And it seems like most devs either include the theme engine or do some theming of the ROM itself. Just too much going on and affects performance/stability in my opinion.

LAst time i pointed out this fact, that i like stock more than custom rom (on GNEX), i was told to get iCab and to buy Iphone....
I like stock... Rooted, so i can remove search bar (only that). I can customize in perfect way, without obligation to flash constant updates, without getting fc-s, without taking care which kernel fits best etc...

[OPINION] Getting a Pixel this week - Are you stock or custom? Which Rom?

So I'm getting a Pixel this week, and I don't feel like trying a bunch of different Rom's, but I can't pick one or decided if I want to go stock.
What Rom are you using? What is great about it? What Problems have you faced? Why did you choose it? (Also, What Kernel are you using? Stock/Custom?)
A few notes:
I will 100% be rooting/TWRP, so that's no concern, just not sure if I want to go stock or custom (and if custom, which Rom). Right now I'm leaning towards Pure Nexus, as the last OTA Update broke my phone. (My fault, I wanted to see what would happen if I accepted OTA update while rooted/twrp ), but I know with Custom Roms, that won't be an issue!
[UPDATE] I use AppRadio Unchained ReLoaded daily which means BT + HotSpot + Chromcast/ScreenCast + Music and Phone over BT + Tasker etc, so anybody who uses AppRadio Unchained, or the aformentioned things a lot, with stability, I would love to know what Rom you are on. I'm looking for stable AppRadio which has been hard to find with so many moving parts in the equation.
I can't tell you which rom is best, you'll receive lots of differing opinions on the same thing. Only way is to try yourself and find the one that fits you best as that's what these forums are about.
For the time you took to type that, you could at least share your choice and why, I didn't ask "what's best" I asked what did you choose and why did you choose it.

I run Pure Nexus as Beans does great work as I also ran his PN rom on my Nexus 6 and he is good at what he does. I also run the kernel Elemental x both are great together and super fast and buttery smooth. That is the only custom rom I have ever ran on my pixel xl as I never wanted to give up how great it runs to try anything else lol.
That's exactly what I'm leaning towards, hoping I don't have a reason to try anything else
Velocity with build in MVK kernel. Fast stable and the best battery usage for me.
Also a lot features I need to have and a lot I don't use
Did try most of the custom out there, but I am using velocity for about 5 years now starting with Nexus 4, so I always flash back to velocity.

I been using pure Nexus, I like it a lot. Just tried RR that one is good to. U just have to try one.
Nah I am using stock ROM, have basically no interest in trying out them custom ROMs, sometimes I do seek for a few features, but I pass. Stock ROM is stable as ****, smooth as **** too, just flash Franco and be done with it.
Running PureNexus here with ELX kernel and am enjoying it
I'm running invisibleks lineageos builds. The best for me!?
I was on same boat just got my pixel xl ROMs had BT problems decided to read and got pure nexus and elementalx and no BT issues at all fast and great battery with wakelocks disabled. Take my word for it
If you want aptX bluetooth capability then you must use a Lineage OS based ROM (formerly CyanogenMOD). I use Resurrection Remix because it's got the most customization options that I like to use.
If you want systemless root or rootless system (whatever it is) then that's not something I know much about but I think it's default in upcoming Lineage OS based ROM's too. Or already is. Whatever. If it sounds vaguely familiar and something you want then ask someone else. lol
If you want pure Android then go with an AOSP based ROM.
If you want Pixel stuff then stay with stock ROM.
Yeah, I know.
You would think a Pixel ROM is pure Android huh.
It is, kind of/mostly.

Pure nexus didn't has the Bluetooth problem because he is not on the latest update.
It's a Google problem on first connection. After the first fc all is fine.
Pure Nexus and Elemental from the get go. No issues. Both are great with no issues so far. Highly recommend.
PureNexus for me. Tried most Roms out there, but keep coming back to it. Buttery smooth, reliable, great battery and great support as a bonus.
Resurrection Remix for me.
Dirty Unicorns have some RC builds up at devs-base

[Q] Go to ROM (coming from nexus6p)

Hi there !
Today I made the switch to the pixel 2 xl and god... I love it!
However I always like to root a phone immediately so I can enjoy adblock, substratum etc. Now I'm wondering since stock android is pretty much perfect nowadays do most of you just use the stock rom + magisk + kernel?
Since coming from a nexus6p the rom support seems kinda mehh ? Also I noticed there isn't a go to rom like the pure nexus onces.
So what do you people suggest? Did any of you dealt with this aswell coming from a nexus device?

Former 6p guy as well. As far as a "go to rom", there really isn't one as of yet in the context you are referring to. However, the most popular, in no particular order seem to be...Nitrogen, DU, and AquariOS. I've used 2 of them, and they are very stable and smooth. Nitrogen was my favorite on the 6p, and seems to be very solid from all the comments I've read on it. Decisions..decisions
Oh, and stock + root is pretty darn good to. Xposed seems to work nicely as well if you don't want a custom rom.
As a former nexus 6p user my advice is: just go stock and root. My pixel 2 xl doesn't even sport a custom kernel - and still, it's is much, much faster than the nexus.
P DP1, Flash kernel and Magisk is a great combo.
Stock with Nathan's excellent Flash Kernel will do you well. I'm holding out until Beans gets PN running on taimen
^^^all of the above!
Former 6P user, former OG XL user, and die hard PureNexus fan here lol,
The best setup I've had so far is stock + rooted + cust kernel + gravitybox for O.
Stock gives me stability, and gravitybox fills in the gaps the lack of a custom rom leaves.
However, the ROMs mentioned by others in this thread seem to all have positive responses so I wouldn't advise against giving those a try as well
Been using pixel XL with purenexus then stock rooted. Then I got my XL 2, and I've ran it with stock rooted for a while, until I flashed Nitrogen + Flash. Best combo for me, amazing smoothness and battery.

Gravitybox is through xposed, right? I'm thinking of giving the stock/root/kernel train a ride. The custom roms are nice but I have a different problem with each one unfortunately.

Yes it's through xposed and even though it's in beta, i haven't had any issues at all with the framework or gravitybox

Yes, gravity box is an xposed module. Evidently sprint and custom roms just don't get along ?

Hmm.. Maybe it's time to roll with stock for a bit. I haven't used xposed for so many phones but Sprint on custom roms is having no mms or data dropping or other bizarre issues others aren't reporting. Stock ran great with no problems though.

Sprint is garbage and I hate it. I keep teetering on joining my wife on her AT&T plan to get away. I get a good price though, that's the only reason I keep it.

I know, right!?
Having my Pixel 2 XL for about a week now, also coming from the 6P, I'd also have to say that stock + Magisk + Xposed(optional) is the way to go.
Running custom roms, there seems to be bits and pieces missing from the stock rom that are Pixel exclusive. Even on custom roms, there's little things that seem to bother me, such as the padding of the status bar left and right due to the rom thinking it's not a rounded screen. There's also the headache that this A/B slot stuff will give from messing with it.
Wow thanks for all the feedback guys !
To bad we don't have a PurePixel rom yet hehe.
But seems I will stick to stock + magisk and maybe give xposed a try
Same as others: have taimen for month, stock rom, kernel + magisk. It's great & damn smooth Now i catch how long uptime i will get, then i will switch to Xposed / Gravity!

DU has a commit for the ROM to properly detect the rounded corners so I'm sure it'll find its way elsewhere. 12.1 is much better on the corners of the status bar then 12 was.

Looking at root - OOS vs Lineage OS

Hi All,
So I recently got a oneplus 5T for work, mostly due to it being great at customising and the dual sim.
Being the tinkerer I am I am looking at either just using stock with franko kernel and magisk to have things like viper and energized.
But also there is lineage, but I can't see the point compared to OOS, plus camera quality seems to be lower from reports, plus I am seeing reports of shutter speed issues.
I know a lot of people will say its pointless to root now, but I still enjoy it and there are some features that you cant get in stock, and google pay works via magisk hide it seems, for how long I don't know.
Thoughts
Thanks
On the OnePlus 3T I loved some of the custom ROMs that were offered because of their features. Now with the 5T I find myself wanting to stay with OOS as I have better battery life, better picture quality, good gesture-based navigation, and some other features that I've grown too accustomed to to live without (app-locker, alert slider, etc). Root and substratum work just great with OOS and I don't find myself missing many features from LOS or GZR. You'll definitely have less features than RR, but personally I feel like the OOS stability is worth it. My $0.02
I haven't used LOS on OP5t however used plenty of LOS roms. OOS is buttery smooth and has a lot of features that were in the past reserved for custom roms. I am content with stock pie beta OOS. I'll probably install custom roms either if a stable miui comes available (not holding my breath) or Android Q rom is available

MI A2 Lite Custom ROM

Hello Im hasnt be here for last 4 months and Im dont know what is actualy best stable custom rom.....
Any advice?
Thanks for reply.
Bliss rom I'm using good
I'm using Pixel Experience - the official version. Gone are the RAM management problems and multitasking stutters. Battery life tho seems slightly worse than the stock ROM. Heard that it will be updated to Android 11, so I'm gonna stick around for awhile.
Thanks for answers
Thanks for the answers too.
I have been on stock since release, but now thinking of putting on a Rom... But am I right in thinking that if I do then 'banking apps' will no longer work ?

I tried a couple of custom ROM's (Pixel Experience, Pixel Experience plus, Havoc and crDROID) without rooting and in all cases my banking apps still worked.
However, Android Auto failed to connect properly to my car in all cases so I switched back to stock.
Of all flavours I tried, PE plus offered the most extras, FWIW.
Interesting, I thought you had to root to install a custom ROM... I will look into that, as I believe it is the root that creates issues for banking apps.
Yes, I have Pixel Experience on my Redmi Note 5 Pro, it is awesome really, would like it on my Mi A2 Lite, but need to be able to do my banking in it.
Thanks for the reply though, interesting.
