Hey,
I recently started to use my N7 more and more. And I am wondering how to get or out of the device.
It would be crazy good if there is some way to play hearthstone lagfree. Because I am using my phone for it atm.
Also I have the feeling that switching between apps is sometimes very laggy.
Can you recommend a few tools, to enhance the devices computing power. I am currently running Pure Nexus 7.1.2 Rom and the 3.4 Krexus Stock kernel.
Merry Christmas

I had LOS 14.1 for several months, and found this it got very slow after a while. I just went back to stock 6.0.1, and it is usable again. I also am looking for suggestions on the fastest stable 7.1 ROM with security updates.
I just loaded Pure Nexus after having been on stock Marshmallow. The performance improvement was very noticeable but I'm not certain if it's the ROM or doing a clean install of an OS after a few years.

I'm running stock 6.01 marshmallow here on my n7 rooted with Elemental X kernel. I haven't come across any games yet it doesn't run well if you look on YouTube I posted some vids a while back. I think there are some hardware issues with the Nexus 7 I guess I'm lucky to own a good one ?
im using microg los 14.1 and gotta say the tablet is as snappy as ever and the battery life improved drastically (from 5 hours sot to 9 hours sot watching youtube videos)

Hello N7(2) users! I just got me a tablet yesterday, and I'm curious. What ROM do you recommend? Currently, I'm running carbon, on both my n4 and n7, and I want something different. Something quick, easy on the ram, and great with the battery. Thanks in advance for your oppionion!

I can recommend you to test them all
btw; AICP is my favorite
.
I'm using Paranoid Android on my Galaxy Nexus, but I haven't felt the need to depart from stock ROM on the N7 2013. I use elementalX Kernel though and added TWRP.

I've flashed my flo 20+ times. I was using various Cm builds but I got tired of the instability after a week or more of use. I tried PA but it's just not stable on my device yet. Slimrom worked well for me but it was lacking some convenience features and it wasn't very fast. I recently flashed Omnirom to try out the multi window feature. The rom was glitchy but multi window did work. I flashed something else once I found out that you can't keep a video playing on half the screen while you use another app on the other side.
For kernels I started with elemental and then switched to faux when it came out. I've dabbled with Franco and glitch but Faux gives me the best battery life by far. I got busy with work and didn't touch my tablet for awhile. I ended up with over 20 days of standby with faux.
I know you said you wanted a change but I've finally settled on Carbon. It's the fastest and most stable rom that I've found this far. PIE, Halo, and floating window all work great. The benchmarks and daily performance are right up there with the CM roms. I've just been using the kernel that comes with Carbon and I'm getting good battery life. Faux is currently ironing out some kinks but I'll switch back to it soon for the battery life and screen calibration options.
Stay stock since it's a Nexus device. If you decide to experiment stay stock first at least for a few weeks to establish a baseline so you'll know if it's ROM related if you run into issues.

I had 50% of my battery drain in carbon from cLock.. I was just wondering if there was a good ROM to utilize what the device is. A tablet. No point in clock being there. You can't use it on the go much. I dunno

cLock doesn't even show up in my battery stats. Is it the clock widget? I deleted the stock one and just use trusty ol' Beautiful Widgets.
Carbon doesn't have a tablet UI but I didn't care for it much in the other roms I've tried. The device just isn't that big so the regular phone UI works fine for me. Even adjusting the dpi makes things too small to be touch friendly for my fingers.

I have owned my nexus 7 2013 for about a week now and i am thinking of returning it due to the lag/stuttering i am experiencing on it. I started noticing it when i flashed lollipop on it, i went back to kitkat 4.4.4 and thing's were certainly improved but i thought i would do a comparison against my moto g 1st gen and i was surprised to see my moto handled thing's better, app opening/closing animations are a hell of a lot smoother and game play is smoother too.
Is this normal behaviour i am experiencing or did i mess something up when i flashed lollipop using wugfresh toolkit? I also rooted it and flashed a custom kernel but after an hour or so i went back to stock, i even went as far as flashing 4.3 then updating back to 4.4.4 through my tablet and done a few factory resets but no difference.

Yes currently everything is stock
I am also experiencing the same issues on lollipop. I might have to do a completely fresh install. May be, it's just our devices showing their age. I don't want it to go the Nexus 7 2012 route!
Nah man, I installed DJ's 5.0 build and I am getting much better performance and battery life than KitKat. I also have Elemental kernel installed, smooth as silk.

I actually did do a fresh install of lollipop. I went back to kitkat hoping the lag will be fixed but it's still here a little although it is improved.
It's a shame i didn't get the nexus 7 2013 when it 1st came out, maybe with all the newer processors out the nexus 7 is showing it's age. I still find it weird that my moto g runs smoother although that could be down to the lower res screen.

Did you try it on stock rom/kernel? I actually flashed elementalx when i went back to 4.4.4 and i kept it at default settings but noticed some frame drops on temple run 2 so i completely unrooted and took everything back to stock but it's still the same.

It's showing its age a bit definitely also it's an adreno 320 pushing a 1200p resolution, and that GPU was really designed with 720p in mind. That being said while I definitely can tell a difference between my nexus 5 and nexus 7, the nexus 7 has aged very well and still enjoyable to use unlike my HTC flyer and original nexus 7 that both aged very quickly and became a burden to use within months
I got mine last Christmas so I never used 4.3 on it. I was rocking a nexus 4 at the time and it was noticeably faster than it was. As far as lollipop goes seems the same. Think it might depend on what apps you use, as a lot and I mean a lot of apps aren't optimized for lollipop yet.

Hi all Gnex MAGURO owner.
I just want to share my new setup on my Gnex.
For all the gnex roms i flashed from 4.3 to 5.1, all i can say that some KK are more stable than LP. on my experience so far now on LP Zmod is the most simple LP rom but after a wekk i got Lags and slow response.
so far now you can have SlimLP and RR if you want to have an LP which will last for months.
But if you want to stick on KK better have CM coz until now CM has always updates for our maguro also you can have SlimLP build 9 if you want to exprience SlimPie.
but if you WANT to have MORE STABLE better have the stock (last google support) which im using now for 2weeks and its battery life is awesome, i can play music for 4-5hrs, play game for 3-4hrs, surfing for 3-4hrs.
so now which will you want to flash? LP? KK? JBstock?

i tried nearly everyrom from ICS to LP and have to say this is the best WHICH WORKS FOR ME:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...m-android-revolution-hd-11-0-quality-t1361348
+ the latest fancy kernel.
After i did flash these i have seen how good the nexus is still.
every other rom just lagged and was slow after usage.
this rom i use for 2 weeks and its the best so far.
@saprer, the last message in that thread is from 2013, which makes me doubt if it is up-to-date. Thanks anyway for your opinion.
@Akosijasper, are you getting Google Play Services FCs lately with AOSP KK?.
Zmod is very stable, and good for daily use. I reach almost 3 hours of display with an old (3years) Gnexus and all work very well

In any case Ziyan has done a great job.

well at first i'm using Zmod and its one of my favorite ROM bug its getting laggy same with Unofficial CM 12.1 so far on me RR on its latest build is okay but im not that sure how long will it last that it won get laggy on the other hand SlimLp is also good coz its miscellaneous batt drain is gone now but for me all LP has slow response with takes 2-4sec before an app will open. then when using LP those HD games or big size games are getting laggy and slow response.
to all sorry for making this thread its just i'm to concern on our maguro yeah its 3yrs old on the market but still i love this phone.
I think there is nothing to apologize. This thread is OK at this precise moment because some of us are getting a big trouble finding the right rom for our beloved gnexes.
LP = Laggish, memory always exhausted, not responsive, not performant, not a good user experience.
KK = Problems with Google Play Services.
JB = 4.3 too old?.
Solution: get a new sexy phone! xD
Is this me or this should go on Q&A?
Stock 4.1.2 best rom and stock kernel I use 2 weeks and no problem
The problem with 4.3 roms and older are exactly that, they are old. Our Gnex runs KitKat extremelly well as AOSP KitKat proves it so there's no reason to be on 4.3 or older for performance alone.
Let's hope for some love on KitKat roms that solve the PlayServices force close (and maybe the battery drain since my phone is keeping its "Deep Sleep" state for over 94% in 3 days without charging since I'm not using it and it's just laying on the desk but the battery still drains really fast). I'm seing like 5% drain evey hour even with those stats. If I use the phone the battery drains like 10% hour so the "sleeping" is very lousy.
Well, maybe with the optimized "Lollipop" in Android M we can get something off the new system on our Gnex, but for now, 4.4.4 with some love in terms of Google Play Services bugfix and battery draining would be perfect. Please note that I'm not demanding anything, I'm just stating what I believe would be very stable in our phone and what I would like to use. I also believe the majority of gnex owners already have a second phone and like to have the latest software in their phones (and may not mind the lag and abuse of RAM since they don't use the phone for continuous time). But for the ones who still have this one as their trophy in the pocket, I believe that wether having KitKat running well or Lollipop running almost well, we would prefer KitKat.
Hi,
for me http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/development/rom-unofficial-cyanogenmod-11-t3026583
Is one of the best, very stable and very fast and support f2fs very well, unfortunately the autor, "sgspluss", not updating anymore, and there is also the problem with play services in common with all KK roms. Until GOOGLE resolve this issue.
but the rom i posted is 4.3 and based on latest ROM aviable.
i dont know but it was the best experience i had: no lagg no stutter good battery and performance
I'm using Official CM 11 by Ziyan ATM, and the Google Play Services FCs are gone. Not as fast as other KK roms, but hey, everything is working

I was about to comment the same. I'm on nightlys, everything works. The problem with CM is once you start updating the nightlys it tends to get very sluggish, I don't know why. It does look like the best choice for now.

well said my friend. yeah your right with it KK has this problems right now.
Thanks for participating for this thread and sorry for making this thread i'm just wondering what would be your point of view for our maguro. Yeah some of us has their 2nd phones already but its just so awful that living this legacy phone that sudden. Some of us uses this phone as their daily driver and still using it cause its still working and not enough money to buy one. I'm just concern to those people who's still using this legacy phone that is why i made this thread.
LP right now is not that good enough for our gnex
KK also have this googleplay services problem and the fast drain battery
on JB its too old (yeah your right) but some says it is more stable on its battery life and its ram (without exposed) the problem for JB is the apps of the those huge games that may cause slow on gaming.

if you want to use stock ROM,I think the stock 4.3 with stock kernel or fancy r43 kernel is the best, if you want to use custom ROM I suggest you shiny 4.4.2 or OmniROM larest builds with franco r398 or fancy r60 kernels, I had used OmniROM with franco r398 kernel for 8months before I give my lovely gnex to my father.

Hey everyone, I just got a nexus 7 2013 today, it's the 16GB model, and it was only £100, so I'm pretty pleased at that, it's running 6.0, the performance is great, but now, after even a day of use I have already been looking into rooting and ROMing it, I'm slightly hesitant to do so however.
Will there be a massive change in performance? If so, what ROM should I go for? I'd really like some suggestions please, and also if someone could point me to a guide to help me root and ROM it, that would be absolutely fantastic. I really don't want to f*ck up this tablet, so could someone please give me some advice. Also I'm not a rookie at custom firmware and all, I've had numerous devices but this is the first one I'm slightly concerned about moding as it comes with no warranty as it's a refurbished unit :/ .
Thanks all
P.S. I realise after reading around that I've posted this in the wrong section....Whoops sorry
Stock 6.0 runs great. I root to block ads thats it.
When official support stops I'll go with something else but right now there's no need.
You're unlikely to **** it up if you read first so try whatever you like. Just make a nandroid first.
I stay stock in my N7 2013 LTE with root + xposed + elemental kernel
After trying many roms, I finally settled on Slimkat. Fantastic performance, incredibly stable, etc.

Yup, just as I prefer Windows 7 over Windows 10 and my 2009 Toyota Corolla over the later models.
I've tried pretty much everything on my Nexus 7. And every time, I came back to KitKat. IMHO, it offers the best performance, best battery life, most stability, and best functionality for what I want my tablet to be able to do.
Marshmallow, as far as my experience goes, certainly lives up to its name. It made my Nexus 7 feel like I dropped it into this sweet, sticky, gooey mess that, while tasting good for a moment or too, just became too tough to chew for any length of time.
I am planning to flash my Nexus 7 2013 of a new android OS version. I would like to seek for your help.
Marshmallow works great, minimal lag and the latest security updates
I use Slimroms' Slimkat and absolutely love it. I'm using it to type this right now on my Nexus 7 2013.
KK
I'm dual booting MM and LP right now. I tried going back go KK hoping lag would subside. But I miss lots of the new things. Unlike iOS where the OS is purposefully made laggy, android runs really smooth on the latest OS. On my iOS device I'd rather downgrade(if it were to be possible) since getting the new features are pretty easy(everything's in cydia)+ iOS 6 and older looks great when Steve was alive . On android getting new features is not as easy and often they are pretty buggy when ported. And old version of android isn't aesthetically attractive to me.
Hey, running pure nexus on nexus 7 2013 really fast and full of great features also tryed cm13 nightly but battery life was poo, I'm looking now for a new ROM like purr nexus but want better battery also always do a back up before trying new ROMs belive me when ur buzzing to boot into ur new ROM things go wrong lol peace x
I'm using stock mm rooted and it works great. KitKat is a little faster but not enough to give up the new features. Closed causes my tablet to periodically not want to boot up or to boot really slowly so I got rid of it.
Marshmallow works great for me
Tbh if your system can go back to KK I'd suggest it. Lol might sound old but that's one of the best updates thereabout. MM is second in line tho due to it being really smooth and has tons of features also a lot of ROM support.
IMO kitkat is the most stable. But MM has the newest features and aesthetics and is quite stable too. LP was crap.
For those on MM, how has your battery drain in doze been? I updated to MM and let it "optimize" for weeks, and the drain never got better than -10% overnight. Completely unacceptable. I flashed and reinstalled after a factory reset, and got the same results.
