New battery won't charge past 84% - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay so the other day I bought a brand new battery for my tab s. The old one had been overheating. And I went to charge it, but the charging stops at 84 percent and refuses to go any further.
It's not the cable that's fine. No particles in the port. I've tried wiping the cache, and a few other ways.
But nothing I do works. Does anyone know why my tab won't charge past 84%? Is there some way to fix this that I haven't tried?
Oh and please don't tell me the battery may be bad, it took so long for it to arrive because of delays. I can't sit through that again if it turns out to be bad.

How did you fit the new battery? I presume you had it done through a service centre as the Tab S battery is an internal battery!

No, I did it myself. It's pretty easy actually.
I don't like bringing my tab to a repair shop as not only do they make you leave it there for days and charge way to much. But I did so with my last tablet and I don't know what they did, but a week later it stopped working all together.

A fully charged battery is approx 4.35v you can download a battery app and it will show you the voltage, So 100% should equal approx 4.35v
Try re-calibrating the battery check the guide and the link to app below.

I replaced my battery back in May that I purchased off ebay. The battery is dated 2017. My battery charges 100%. Maybe you got a older battery that was on the shelf too long, or is just defective. Also I received my battery in like 3 days. I would try buying another one from a different seller because there are good batteries out there. Ask the seller what is the manufactured date.

6 month old MDA Compact lll not holding charge anymore

Hi. I upgraded to my MDA Compact lll through T-Mobile last June. The last few days the phone has been losing it's charge very fast. Last night I charged it from my PC till it was over 70% done. Previous nights I've charged it till it's 100% which is what I normally do. Today, it switched itself off sometime around mid morning and I hadn't even used it since charging last night. When I put the charger on it, the battery level was showing 0. The battery is firmly in place.
I rang T-Mobile, but before they would put me onto their handset department,
he recommended I charge it to 100% and let it run completely down with no charging between. He said to do this about 3 times and see if it cures the problem. He reckoned it was to do with the battery memory. What do you think?
Also, since there is a standard years warrantly with T- Mobile phones, I guess they'll replace or repair, yes?
Li-Ion-Batterys do not have a memory-effect.
You should buy a new battery, because warranty is only for the device, but not for the battery.
Do you often use it for navigation? Sun and heat is not so good for the capaticity of the battery.

I have Tomtom navigator on it, yes.
How much is a new battery? £50?

Result! T-Mobile sending me a new battery which I'll get in the next 3 to 5 working days. Seems they were happy to include it as part of my warranty.

Thanks, good to know it can be bought so cheap.
I received a new battery yesterday and it took over 6 hours to fully charge.
I then unplugged it from my pc once it had reached 100%, which was about midnight or 1am, can't remember. Today at about midday, the battery gauge was down to 68%, phone not used. Now, at 4pm, it's down to 41%. I only made one phonecall earlier for less than a minute, returning a voicemail that was left for me. I can't quite remember at what rate my previous battery went down before it became problematic, but does this seem right to you? If not, there seems to be something else afoot. Surely, the battery gauge should still be showing around 90% on standby?
It's draining much slower than the old battery though.

[Q] Mugen Battery strangeness...

This is my first post on here, but I've been lurking for ages I just bought a Mugen 3200mAh battery from MugenBattery.com.I already know about not having to condition it(lithium ion),so I ignored the instructions about cycling it and plugged it in and used it right away, and at first it seemed okay for around an hour(I didnt use it at all up to this point, just left it there until I needed it). When I went to unlock my Vibrant from suspend(pushing on the power button),the phone shut off and seemed like it was rebooting...but it just had the first screen you see(the one with Samsung and Vibrant on it) blinking on and off, even when I plugged in the charger in this state, all that popped up was a battery that also blinked on and off.The only way to get it going again was to pull and replace the battery, and it went back on again...then did this all over again when it went into suspend and I tried to unlock it.All the while, the battery stated it had around 75% power,so I have no idea what could have caused this.I put my cheep chinese 2700mAh battery back in and all was well again,so I know its the battery, not the phone.Anyone else have or seen this problem before? This is the most expensive battrery I have ever purchased for a phone at $88.00US....I hate to think that a cheep($20.00US) chinese battery has better quality control than it....
i think you need to charge it for 12 hours first.

Thanks, you were right! An overnight charge of around 12 hours did it.This is the first phone battery I had to do that with to get them to just work at all.Seems to work just fine now Again, thank you!
Let us know how long the battery is lasting once you get a few cycles please!
Yeah, you should run the battery dry, recharge, run dry, recharge and after a few cycles your life should improve.
Will do,just need a few days to do it,its lasting a looooong time!

NO, NO, NO. PLEASE stop spreading bad information. This will HARM the battery, and will have 0 benefit. The only "benefit" you can get from this is that the battery meter on the phone's firmware will be calibrated to show a more correct remaining %. You can achieve the same by charging the phone 100% (overnight) going to clockwork recovery and selecting 'wipe battery stats'. Calibrated or not, the battery will last the same, regardless of what % left its showing.
Again for posterity, REPEATED DISCHARGING OF LI-ION BELOW 20% IS BAD FOR THE BATTERY, IT'S PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR IT TO GET BETTER.
I am having a similar issue with a battery that I ordered off of ebay. It's 3500mah.
When I plug it in it will turn off and get stuck in a boot loop on the vibrant screen, but if it is off then it won't turn on at all when plugged in. It has been plugged in for 9 hours so far and it doesn't even show the charging animation or anything.
Normal? Or is the battery defective?
Thanks.
Ok. After charging it overnight and still nothing, I'm going to assume its broken. Thanks.

...and it does get a bit bulky, weight goes up to about double the amount, but it is so worth it,and then some!!I went from 6 hours on the stock battery to over 18 with the Mugen, and thats with heavy use(full brightness/live wallpaper,etc.).If you dont have access to a charger outside your home, this is a great buy,and you know the quality is there, unlike the uncertainty of the cheep chinese ones.Highly recommended!

I am not so sure about your information. This is what DHGate, a wholesale Chinese online store wrote about the 3000mah battery for Galaxy S [not MUGGEN!]
How to use a new battery:
1. First when you received the battery,. you need to release the power in the battery, just put it into your phone without charging.
2. After the battery power is out, please charge it about 12 hours in first three times.
3. So the battery will be actived. So you can just charge it about 5-7 hours when use in the further.

No controversies at all. Your info from the link is outright wrong.
Mannymal is correct on this one.
I also have this battery. By the time I got it, Team Whiskeys roms had gotten good enough to where I didn't need an extended battery for day to day use (stock battery usually has 30-40% when i go to bed), but I do use it when I travel, so I don't have to worry about using it like crazy. The battery lasts a long time, probably like 2 or 3 days if I actually tried to drain it, at least. And it's definitely adds bulk, but it's reasonably well made and feels sturdy.
My only complaint is that I sometimes cover the speaker with my finger when I want to silence it real quick, and it doesn't work with this because the cover's so far from the speaker. But that's just my weird thing.
Also, yeah, don't kill your battery. No es bueno.
What is this? How do I read?

I use a seido innocell battery and it works great after a few over night charges. I get about 8 hours average of talk time. The battery is pretty small compared to the one accessory greeks sell. Even though the ah battery ia twenty five dollars, that is like the entry level name brand battery, it will lady you a while longer than the cheap ones on ebay, but I don't knower about the ones on ebay although I do know about the one ag sells skies down charging after about 45 percent charging. The seido is charging pretty fast for me and is half the price of a mugen, the next battery I'm going to buy will be the nugent, not because I need it, just

Battery replacement - experience so far

After becoming increasingly frustrated by poor battery performance, I decided to take the plunge and order a new battery from Amazon (UK) http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00SHVIV96?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
After previously breaking the screen and damaging the USB socket / circuit board which required a new screen assembly+new ribbon cable the battery replacement was incredibly easy in comparison and took under 5 minutes.
The old battery had the date of 2013, October 24th, the new one date code 2015, February 14
With moderate usage i was getting about 12 hours battery with screen on time of around 1 hr 30 ( GSam battery monitor ) with heavy usage this was significantly less.
with light usage I was returning from Work with about 40% left, which then took around 45 minutes to fully charge back again to 100% using a wireless charger.
Also recently the battery wasn't even charging on the official charger, instead it would drop about 2% per hour and charge very slowly with Bluetooth/wifi etc switched off.
The New battery came with 45% charge and its been on charge now for over an hour ( same as the old battery) and its only increased by 20% so it appears to be taking much longer to charge.
Mine will be delivered tomorrow morning. I have big hopes because i am also getting poor battery with 2h of SOT . Will report my experience
One of the things I know about Lithium batteries is that when they start to loose capacity they will charge quick - but also drain quick.
so far the charging appears to be taking forever - gained about 12% in the last hour. There are a lot of people who want fast charging however at the moment if slow charging=better battery then all the better.
One of the things ive missed with the nexus 5 is a replaceable battery ( that is one that you can swap while away - no tools required) and in place of that Ive been using a portable power pack with QI built in ( Rav power ) thats about the same size as the nexus 5, the nexus 5 in a case+the rav power QI charger both fit in a pocket and the nexus will charge from the QI charger whilst both are in a pocket.
Day 1 of usage, and im currently showing 15-20% extra charge remaining usually i would be at 40% ( give or take 5%) today at the same time i was at 63%
I notice my Nexus 5's battery charges rather quick. And been losing power fast as well. Maybe a new battery.
So, is it so hard to replace my battery?
Because somehow my phone is heat so quickly (even on lightly use like chatting and 9gagging)
And also, my phone is draining so fast (after i plug out, it takes under 5 minutes to go from 100 to 99)

So long as you have the right tools for the job, it's actually fairly easy going - IFixIt has a pretty handy guide for it.
Its actualy easier than the giude makes it look - if you dont have the tools then you can buy repair kits
the only tricky parts may the the bottom of the back cover where there may be a small amount of adhesive, and getting the old battery out - again as a result of a small amount of adhesive.
I would advise that you have something soft to place your nexus down on so you dont scratch the screen, something to keep the little screws in so they dont get lost, and a flat/clear area.
with a little bit of thought the nexus 5 could have been designed with a user replaceable battery .
As for usage not much to report yet, I've re-set Gsam battery ( only realised that it need to be re-set) and its currently reporting screen on of 2hr 21 battery life of 8hr 43 although this has only just been re-set so it may change.
Is there a recommended seller at amazon.com?
Don't want to be scammed.

yeah i remember when i replaced my cracked screen some months ago, removing the battery was the hardest part because of the adhesive. not that it was hard to get out but i had to be gentle not to damage the battery. any way our device has great repairability comparing to other devices which can be a nightmare. now i'm waiting for this battery to arrive and this time ti will not be difficult to remove since i have done it once. i hope this battery turns out good, i've heard good reviews of it even though it's not the default lg battery and has slightly more capacity.
What is the date of the new batteries is everyone buying ? Someone is selling me a one with February 2014 date, it is new , but I think it is too old. What do you think ? My phone has one made I think in November 2013 (first batch n5).
Where are you guys getting the batteries? I'm having trouble trusting these sellers.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I purchased my battery from a company called ITSTEK via amazon, the same place where i purchased my replacement screen from.
The first screen was purchased from another seller, packed in bubble wrap and had been taken from another nexus 5 ( had damage marks where it had been removed)
the screen from ITSTEK was inside a sealed anti static bag with LG markings and Korean/Chinese (?) writing on.
As for battery life GSAM is now reporting battery life 15hrs 22 min ( was 12hours
Screen on 2hr 10 ( was 1hr 30)
while that may not sound great each time i check the app the figures are going up time goes by.

Well i have received my polarcell battery and been using it for 3 days now. I have written my impressions in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60795458

Phone abruptly dies under 20% battery

Phone totally goes black/dies when battery is 21% down to 10%. does this just mean the battery I have is bad? What replacement battery is best? I've read Anker makes a good set with charger. Thanks.
Samsung SDI batteries are the only batteries I've known to do this. When screen goes black, that should be a shutdown. Do you plug in your charger at that time? Mine actually actually showed 0%.
It's inconvenient for a battery to shutdown unexpectedly, while showing capacity remaining. I always replace Samsung OEM batteries with another brand. I found one that I liked so l went to Amazon and bought a second plus external charger from same brand. If looking at another alternative, just search MPJ and read the reviews. The battery and wall charger were on sale last week, maybe still.
If you're considering upgrading to sealed battery in unibody phone, you should consider the care required for such a phone to get battery to last. Sealed batteries are actually very similar in capability and ratings; no leap in tech but apparent shortcoming evident in Note7 embarrassment. Fast charging produces heat and steals life from battery's endurance down the road. Studies have shown since lithium batteries have no memory that you're actually prolonging the battery by slow charging without load or minimum load and bump charging rather than cycling battery to near 0% then back to 100%. Manufacturers don't tell you that because they prefer you wear your battery down in less than a year's time and consider another phone purchase.
Maybe Samsung would be better off today if consumers were more aware of how to prolong lithium batteries?
If you want your battery to last two years, bump charge it after 25% used as much as possible; it shouldn't even matter if you bump charge it 3x per day. Avoid fast charging and heat cycles. IOW, try not to use it while charging; the cycles should be short anyway.
Or, if you prefer to abuse a removable battery like the Note 4 and care less, pay about $15 and just replace the battery every year. 500 full cycles is all these batteries are currently rated for due to increased degradation with abuse. Mini cycles allows more of those cycles without degradation but you'll still have capacity when you need it to last a long day without charging.

Try this, if you are rooted and have recovery wipe dalvik cache and cache. Power off phone and pull battery for like 5-10min. Hold the power button (with battery out) for like 1-2min. After letting battery sit out for 5-10min reboot and see what happens. If same instances occur. Your battery is dead just purchase a new one! Anker recommended!

You're welcome.
Bump charging is partially charging before battery gets low. An example would be running the battery down 25% and charging without overcharging it.

I'm just glad there's a way to replace it that'll mean this phone can last a long time if I'm careful with it.

Yes the stock Samsung batteries are horrible. They don't last very long then they start misrepresenting the battery statistics to the OS so you get the shutdowns at 20 or so %. I switched to a twenty$ Anker I found on Amazon over 6 months ago and never had the issue occur again. Even thy sprint techs will tell you if you ask them outright!

FUN FACT: After 15 months, measured battery capacity is 81%, or about 2430mAh.

Hello, I recently received a brand new U11 to test drive and I depleted it and my HTC 10 which I have owned for 15 months. I then use a USB meter and my HTC 10 only charged to 81% of what the U11 charged to.
81% of 3000mAh = 2430mAh
Just some fun facts for those of us who have used the phone for an extended period of time or what to expect if you plan on owning it for this length of time.
Sounds about right, this is why I really miss removable batteries

When I do your test, I get Full charge: 3049000, does that mean it's 100 % (I don't have a USB meter) ? I have owned my HTC 10 for about 13 months.
@Cro Cop
Nope, that tests implies you never reset your phone and never erased battery stats, which most people on XDA have every time they flash a new ROM. You are probably near the 80-85% capacity mark.
Can you please try accubattery app to see how it's results compare to your more rigorous method. Accubattery states my capacity is 76% or 2277mAh. However it states it will get more accurate over charging cycles. I've had the phone since release day. Now switched off fast charge!

But I did wipe battery stats several times at least (read somewhere it makes no difference) and flashed a RUU (reset) before nougat upgrade..

The battery life is atrocious even when new. I am afraid.
Using Accubattery I have an estimated 83% battery capacity, however this phone was replaced in February via Uh-Uh coverage. I broke the screen in my original phone and they gave me a replacement unit (To me it seems this was the case since the exterior was flawless again and I was given a phone with a new IMEI). It has been 6 months and I don't think I am such a heavy user to have degraded the battery that fast, does anybody think this might be resolved by taking the phone back for warranty? I even wonder if it is possible at this point :/ (My original 10 was bought may 2016 practically at launch) Thanks!
Really hoping LG V30/G7 has a removable battery
This is from my old M8, not sure how to read this and what level 2 health means.

That's pretty good for an old device. Probably cause it's before the quick charge tech
@LibertyMonger
Good would just mean the battery is functioning. You could only have 50 percent of your cells left and it would still say "Good".
@gsw5700
I used AccuBattery and got 80% or 2,397mAh for estimated capacity, so my previous math was correct.
Damn! So accuBattery is correct, next phone needs to have removable battery, if there is such a thing sigh

never do a full charge or discharge....
hold it between 20 and 80 then u got a good battery health... mine is 2644mah(accubattery)
my 10 is from 06.16

I have purchased a battery replacement and will update this post when I successfully replace it next week.
@BitsnPiecez
I have heard of doing something like this before, and obviously you're degradation is smaller than mine by a bit. But that is just another extra several steps to take. Forcing myself to check the phone to see if it charged to 80% is a pain and then on many days I dont know how much i will use my phone, so charging it to 80% defeats the purpose of a larger battery. Hopefully once I replace my battery I can go another year without any major battery issues.
