OP5T OOS 4.7.4 Trust Agents disappear - OnePlus 5T Questions & Answers

Hi,
I am using Face Unlock, but also like my trusted devices like my smartwatch or me being at home. It's great to unlock my phone at night with a swipe only.
For some reason unknown to me trust agents get "lost" after a reboot, opening trust agents brings up an empty menu and after some fiddling with turning trust agents off and on again, I get them back.
It's really annoying the way it is ATM. This happened with 4.7.2 and after a fresh install also with 4.7.4.

Did you root your device?

Yes, I did. Magisk, and never had any issues so far. The fun part is... it's not consistent. It works, then it does not. If it'd be root-related, then this issue should be persistent. For the record: Face unlock itself is fine and also Safety Net tests pass.

Post your questions there.

Thanks, searched but used Trust agents instead of Smart lock so nothing came up.
@moderation: Can these threads please be combined?

Track lost phone with GPS?

I know that Android based phones have applications where you can track your phone through GPS software should it ever get lost. Is there such an application for our phones? I'd hate to lose my phone that has GPS capability and not be able to find it. And the thought of losing it and someone else finding it, hack it, and use it for their own personal use would be very more irritating.
And I know that the Motorola CLIQ even has the capability to erase all your stored information on the phone should you lose it to prevent someone from hacking into the phone and retrieving your sensitive information. Again, is there any software for our phones also?

I always do use the "Search" function, but even with sifting through posts I didn't come across the two you listed. Thank you. Maybe I'm trying to be too technical with my searches...
Free web services (and Beta), with "Find" and "Erase" functions, among others:
www.flexilis.com
www.mobiwee.com
I just tried the Maspware GuardsMobile and ended up locking my phone up. It recommended disabling balloon pop-ups and a soft-restart. I allowed that then it gave me errors loading some related tracking.exe file. I tried to enter the default pin and it didn't work. Gave me 3 attempts. After the 3rd attempt the phone was locked! Searched around and came up with nothing. There's not even a guide explaining what happens.
So now I'm forced to reflash the phone and restore my PIM. I do not recommend this program for anyone with cooked ROMs.
I'm going to now play with Ultimate Theft Alert.
Can't find any command lines for Ultimate Theft Alert V35. I don't think I really like it a whole lot as some of the others...think I'll try my luck at Maspware GuardMobile again.
Ok, reinstalled GuardMobile. Activated it (fingers crossed). It recommended disabling the SMS bubbles again and a soft-reset. I let it and amazingly my phone didnt lock up this time when entering the demo password "1234".
I feel much more comfortable trialing this program than Ultimate Theft Alert as they list the commands on their website, and you don't get ANY commands list until you've purchased UTA. So without having any commands to trial the program I will not be purchasing UTA.
Time to play around with MaspWare GuardMobile now...
Ok, just tried to exit GuardMobile and I got the freaking error again!
"An unexpected error has occurred in GuardMobile_TS.exe.
Select Quit and them restart this program, or select Details for more information.
Luckily this time I didn't leave it active while testing. Reset phone and it works. But everytime I try and test the locate or monitor it fails to send SMS. Then I exit the program and it crashes. I'm going to uninstall and forget this program...AGAIN!
Sprite Terminator seems to work so far. Only exception is that I can't use the "Alternate GPS" It doesn't give me a lock on my position and comes up with all ZEROS. Going to keep playing with this.
Had you tried any of the web services I've posted?
They both work fine for me. And they are both free (at least, for now, at Beta stage...).
there's a program called WIMP, i havent tried it yet though
Sprite Terminator works, BUT when it intercepts the SMS code it doesn't text back.

Well, Flexilis have a "Scream" command, that will make the phone starts playing a rather anoying horn sound, for 30 seconds.
Handy to find a lost device, at least. And to get some atention on a stolen one, but the thief can just turn it off...
Kaspersky Mobile Security 8
Looks like no one has mentioned or tried this software yet.
I've already tried the 1 month trial version and then purchased a 1 year plan which I believe is worth every penny.
It's an anti virus, anti spam, sms and phone blocker and phone locater.
link:
http://www.kaspersky.com/kaspersky_mobile_security?thru=reseller=kmssidebanner3
Features:
Block access to contacts, photos or files on your phone if it is lost or stolen
Get the GPS location of a lost or stolen phone
Encrypt sensitive personal and business data
Remotely wipe your smartphone if necessary
Block unwanted calls and SMSs
Cybercrime and your smartphone
Stop cybercriminals hijacking your smartphone to make money
Block the sending of data to third parties
Prevent corruption of personal data
Hope this helps!

Hmm might be at least a bit useful like you say - maybe a password to turn off sound will be better?
Well, they are in Beta, so accepting ideas and feature requests... why don't you send them an e-mail?

Can't unlock phone on boot

Hi all,
bit of an emergency here. I am running rooted Chroma rom, just went into twrp to backup my EPS, and upon reboot it is saying I need to enter my password. I have done this several times. Now, it keeps saying the password is incorrect, and after the 5th time, there is no option to reset it! Help please!! Don't feel like wiping my phone again...

Thanks for the reply. Going through the post-wipe setup now. Grrrr. It's just that I entered the password a bunch of times, and it always worked. Just on reboot from recovery it didnt. Now I'm afraid to go back into twrp...
Anyone know if this could be caused by some android security feature that doesnt like systemless root, xposed, etc.

I assume this is the same problem as the Nexus 6P. You need to disable the security before making a TWRP backup. The fix is:
After restoring the nandroid, boot into twrp and then delete /data/sytem/locksettings.db. If that doesn't fix it, delete the locksettings.db-shm and locksettings.db-wal in the same location. If that doesn't fix it either, delete gatekeeper.password.key and gatekeeper.pattern.key in the same location.

Thanks for this fix. I'll keep it in mind next time. My broader question is now about security in general, since there seems to be a way to remove security from our roms?? For example, if someone got ahold of your phone, couldnt they just follow these steps to get in? Is this just a side-effect of unlocking the phone that is unavoidable? If I'm missing something about how to maintain security in the unlocked/rooted environment, please let me know. I've looked around but I haven't found any great guides for best practices regarding nandroids/security, etc. Thanks all!

Rooting is in itself the biggest security risk. This is why carriers are working with manufacturers to make many phones fully locked and unrootable. Our main security expert Jcase does not use a rooted phone. He recommends if you need to root, go ahead, make the changes you want, then quickly unroot. So sure, if someone stole your phone they could follow that procedure to get into it. They could also just force a fresh stock version on it to wipe everything. Security and locks are meant to keep out honest people and slow down the dishonest.

Just so I'm clear, the only thing keeping a stock phone safe is that when its locked, it can't be unlocked/rooted because the option to allow oem unlocking/adb connections are not (or should not be) checked in the developer options, is that correct? From what you're saying, as long as those two boxes are checked, there is essentially nothing stopping someone from wiping out your password and getting into your device. I'd love to run unrooted, but would adaway still have an effect? I'm thinking that the definitions are already applied, so maybe it would work unrooted. But cf.lumen, which I love and can't find the same functionality anywhere else, seems to always "enable interactive shell" on boot. Would this work unrooted? But again, as long so you're doing all this stuff, you can't lock your bootloader again, can you? Or can you lock it on a stock rom with the kind of modifications I'm talking about. I read that locking bootloader while having a custom rom loaded can cause a brick, although I'm not quite sure why. Couldn't you just always get into fastboot to unlock it again?

Pfew...so many questions...there are always vulnerabilities out there that hackers can find..like Stagefright...but a rooted phone is the most vulnerable. So having a phone with a locked bootloader and unrooted is the best security...still not guaranteed against every possible thing. But it is the best...now what are you trying to protect? Your data...or someone being able to wipe and use the phone as their own? All you can do really is try to protect from a phone being hacked remotely...and a rooted phone is like leaving the safe door open. But if someone steals your phone, there are always nefarious ways to make it usable.

Yeah, sorry for the wall of questions. I am just trying to wrap my head around some of these issues. At the end of the day, I don't really keep sensitive data on the phone, although it would not be good if a bad actor got into my gmail, for instance. I suppose I should migrate the last of my sensitive accounts to a secondary email, so no password resets could be initiated from a stolen phone. It's always a tradeoff between convenience and security I know. It's also a little worrysome that simply unlocking the phone activates it for androidpay. An unlocked phone stolen out of someone's hand is essentially the same as stealing all the credit cards in their wallet. It would be nice if android pay allowed an additional fingreprint/pin/password to make the transaction. Anyway, I'm now taking my own thread way off topic. Thanks for the insights though.

For most phones that have fingerprint security Android Pay can be set up that way. I won't use it anyway because it would be crazy to hand a waiter your unlocked phone, or to have to follow him to the register. It would only be useful to me in the supermarket but I am carrying a credit card anyway. But that is one thing people forget, rooting a phone means removing the main security.

Yes, that should get you to the authorization screen and then if you have fingerprint set up should ask you for the fingerprint to authorize. Android Pay also now works on phones without fingerprint sensors so that is why they provide those simple instructions. Final authorization instructions will appear on your screen.

Real word use shows that android pay does not ask for an additional fingerprint at the time of use. It's just as the instructions say, as long as your phone is unlocked at the time it is held up to the scanner, androidpay will work. I kind of wish they allowed for the additional security of an at-scan fingerprint read, but oh well. I have yet to test if the password/pin can be removed by the methods discussed in this thread, and androidpay working after defeating this security. If it does, then this is obviously a major security vulnerability of having an unlocked phone and using androidpay at the same time. Probably not more dangerous in terms of protecting against CC thieves, since they can just swipe a card stolen from your wallet at a terminal, but you probably wouldn't want to keep too many cards on your phone. Again, I haven't tested this out, if a fingerprint is still required to get in after a password database defeat, but someone should do this test.
If you have your phone lost or stolen just cancel your cards as if it happened to your wallet. Simple no?

Auto start apps on reboot before unlocked?

This may be just an Oreo thing or maybe pixel specific but despite a ton of searching I can't find anything helpful.
When the phone is rebooted, something I do daily, it won't launch any user apps until it's unlocked.
So if I reboot and don't stay by the phone to unlock it things like slack, phoneweaver, nine, and a handful of other important apps won't start. In turn if it was close to a scheduled profile change in phoneweaver it won't work. Or if a slack message comes in it won't to the phone. Nova doesn't fill in widgets. Etc.
This is a minor headache but still annoying. Hoping someone may know why? My gut is that despite not having multiple users set on the phone Oreo doesn't load apps until you officially "login" by unlocking.
Something it would be nice to work around without compromising security ...
Appreciate anything you all may have.

I just noticed this on my Google Pixel 2! What the hell Google? No apps auto-start until after the first unlock. Is this an Oreo or Pixel specific thing?

No, I think it has to do with the data partition needing to be decrypted by unlocking before anything actually starts up.
It also does it on my Xiami MI 9.
I have not activated data encryption. In my opinion it is wrong that no service starts.
For example, the "Find my phone" would be good if it always started regardless of everything.

Is there any way to fix smart lock's "trusted places" feature

Smart lock's trusted places is a great feature to keep your phone locked while at home but it never works reliably. I had an S8 and was never able to get it working either. I've scoured the internet and tried every remedy I can find. I can get smart lock to keep my phone unlocked for a few hours sometimes but it always fails at some point and requires a fingerprint again even while at home. It works very reliably connected to my car as a trusted device.
Has anyone found a way to fix this problem and get smart lock to work for more than just a few hours? Is this a Samsung issue or an Android problem? I do see people with other devices complaining as well so I'm assuming it is an Android problem.

That's what I thought but this issue has been going on for years. Why can't Google just let us use Wifi to keep the phone unlocked? It would be so simple.
After 4 hours of not interacting with the phone it will require you to use a biometric or pin/password. That's by design. Not sure if that's your issue or not. I use a BT connection as my smart unlock at home, and it works fine.

That's not the issue. It will lock immediately after turning off the screen, and often immediately after adding a new safe area coordinates from the same location....
Do you have location set to high accuracy?
I have it set to high accuracy and same issue. Even after using biometrics to unlock (for example when waking up in the morning) trusted places still doesn't work. Super annoying.

I have a S7 edge too and on this device Smart Lock trusted places has suddenly become totally unreliable recently (since few weeks approximately).
I'd really like being able to use Wifi instead as @skiddingus suggested.

General Whomp - A Tale of Swift Return (lol)

Kind of bummed, ahh well.
Now that that is unrooting and relocking is out of the way... have to say I am sad about this one. I was excited for it, spent HOURS getting it all setup. You all know the deal, lol.
Ran into two issues that I found that apparently showed up with OnePlus' implementation of Android 12 and persist even still... all this time later.
1. The Display Timeout option is not properly (normally) exposed to things like Tasker
2. Call redirection (for things like Google Voice) is broken
I recognize that these are probably issues that 90% of people don't notice/care about, but they're also extremely well documented and reported in all of the normal OnePlus places. I find it bonkers that after all this time, those issues still exist. I use Google Voice to make calls as needed for business when I am on the move without exposing my personal number (and to avoid carrying two devices). I made a number of calls before realizing that it was not working properly (since it's not obvious).
Coupled with some of the little Pixel things I was fine giving up... eh. Just feel sour about long time bugs like that.
Maybe I will try the OnePlus 12 next year. For now, the OnePlus 11 goes back to Amazon.
Just a little rant into the void.
I can't believe they still haven't fixed call redirection. That's been an issue since Android 12 on the OP9. It was so annoying I just switched Google Voice to prefer wifi/mobile data and used the dialer in the app to work around it.

Yeah... I could work around that... yes, it would be annoying when I am getting in the car to remember to have to get out of the parking lot (off wifi) before making the call... but it would end up ok. Then sometimes (hit or miss in my experience) the call would get messed up when I arrive somewhere and connect to wifi again during the call).
And I could work around the Display Timeout issue using different apps and such.
And workaround this and that, etc. But it's just BS to me. Like... fix these old bugs that you create in your build that don't exist in Android/every other build. Admittedly, I was really annoyed at the several calls I made where I had no idea the wrong number was being shown on the receivers ID. Soured the whole thing for me.

Yeah I kept my Pixel for my rooting needs (really just for Network Signal Guru) and haven't missed it at all on the S23U. There's no way I'll ever import a phone with all the compatibility issues AT&T and Verizon have with them plus they never have n71 for T-Mobile either.

Every year I think more and more about it. At this point I am using root for 4 apps and only 2 of them matter.
1. Adguard - So I can nicely adblock without using VPN style blocking.
2. Swift Backup because I actually find myself regularly wanting to roll back or recover.
The other two are Tasker, but that's mostly just for self granting permissions, and my file explorer that I can easily live without.

I switched to Brave so I don't need an ad blocker (ads in apps don't bother me, just the nonsense that happens in the browser, and in fact I get free service from Boost for watching ads anyway) and I started noticing problems with backups that included app data so I just switched to Google Backup. I will say though, Shizuku is supported by Swift Backup. You can back up and restore everything except the app data without root using Shizuku.

Yeah, I have needed that app data a number of times... for better or worse, I guess.
I'm selling my OnePlus 11. The software is beyond frustrating and the simple tweaks one can do with Developer Options and ADB are either locked out on this phone or revert to defaults upon reboot. Clearly, OnePlus doesn't listen to their fan base outside of China. The development potential was what drove me to buy this, but it has been a complete disappointment. The lack of wireless charging has also proven to be an inconvenience and I don't trust the longevity of the charging port.
It looks like if you want a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 running clean versions of Android, Motorola and Sony are the way to go.
