Is just my phone? Since 8.1 update, camera becomes really clunky and laggy, when I take a picture, if I go to the preview the app becomes really slow and almost useless, I have to directly open Google Photos cuz trying to watch a picture from the camera app is a mess.
It happens to the stock camera, to the NX version too, the only app that does not present the problem is the "OnePlus Camera"
I tried wiping cache partition, wiping cache and data from camera app, uninstalling updates, updating the camera again and nothing solves the problem...

Happens to my friends n5x also.
for me too
Install camera nx 7.2 and disable stock camera
Same here. Flash triggers before the shot, resulting in a black screen, and zoom is erratic.
No issue when reverting to 8.0 so that's software related for sure.

Its been like this awhile but my my camera seems to force close every time I go to the stock camera app. The app opens and the camera shows a very laggy display when moving it around but then when I press the button to take the pic, it force closes and says "Unfortunately, the camera has stopped working." My friend has the same phone and ROM and build # on his phone and he has no camera issues.
P.S. camera takes pictures when I'm on a third party app (ex. Instagram, camera fun, paper camera etc...)

Wipe Data/Dalvik/Cache and start from scratch all over.
I'm having the same problem with my Sprint Galaxy Nexus. I've flashed a couple of different roms, wiping cache/dalvik/system every time. Yet the stock Camera continues to crash upon launch.
Only because I'm lazy right now I haven't yet wiped everything and started fresh. But I did remember I had purchased this app awhile ago: Camera ICS+
It's basically the stock Camera with a few tweaks to it. Since all 3rd party camera apps work fine, this one launched and shoots photos/video/panoramas no problem.
They have a free version with ads, but a couple dollars instead of completely wiping everything might be something to consider.
go to manage apps, all, camera.. then press the clear data button. now try reopening the camera app.
Take adb logcat, reproduce the issue, forward it to the right places.

Ah, well... will you look at that. This fixed the problem for me. Went to the App Info for Camera and hit Clear Data. Works like a charm now, thanks!

About 7 days ago, my camera app started force closing everytime I tried to open it. Thought it was an issue with the CM10 build I was using, so I wiped and flashed the official AOKP ROM. The issue persisted. Tried multiple ROMs, including stock. It seems to be an issue with not only the stock camera, but with any app that accesses the front facing camera. Skype won't let you log in. The stock camera app force closes. Camera ZOOM app works with the rear facing camera, but won't let you use the front facing camera (just flashes black when you try to switch to the front camera, then switches back to the rear camera). This all started about 7 or 8 days ago, and I initially thought it was an issue with the experimental version of CyanogenMod 10 that I was using. But after multiple wipes and reflashes, that doesn't seem to be the case.
Anyone else experiencing this?

Sounds like a hardware issue. Maybe you can get the hardware to reset by leaving the battery out for 15-20 mins?
Swype'ed on my CM10 Galaxy Nexus
go back to stock and see if that resolved the problem.
Let the battery sit out for an hour today at work just in case, no dice. Clearing data/cache in the Apps menu, no dice.

Yup, tried that. Did a complete wipe of internal storage, not just user data. Used the GNex Toolkit to put stock 4.0.4 and 4.1.1. Same results with both. I've (miraculously) never dropped this phone, so I'm not sure what could have caused the front-facing camera to fail. Either way, Verizon is sending me a new one. Drives me NUTS not knowing what really went wrong though.
Getting a weird one. When I am video'ing, and I try to zoom in, the camera then crashes with "Unfortunately, the camera has stopped"
I have tried with Google Camera, which I have installed, and the zoom seems to work fine, but I would rather use the LG G3 camera app
The zoom works fine when not recording, and when taking stills, but only crashes when actually recording
Edit :
Have done a full factory reset, and have just let the phone update what it needs from the Play store (google services etc), have not installed any 3rd party apps ... and still having the same problem
Initially the zoom worked, but rebooted the phone and now the camera stops again
If I zoom in to say 5x and then start teh video, it records, but as soon as I try and zoom in or out, it crashes
The phone is stock, LG-D855 and running V10h-EUR-XX
Hello. I have had the M5 for around two months now and almost everytime I use snapchat, whether the actual camera is on, viewing a snap or viewing the list of sent/received snaps, the app freezes and crashes.
I then get the error message about the camera unable to open, and any app, including the official camera app, that uses the phones camera, is unable to open the camera.
I have....
Updated snapchat
Cleared cache
Restarted phone
Uninstalled/re installed snapchat
The same issues still, every time.
Any other possible fixes???

I'm having the same problem. If you don't mind me asking, how did you get the official camera app to work again? I don't mind sacrificing Snapchat, I just want my cameras back!
I had problems with snapchat until I updated to 5.1. Snapchat works fine for the most part but some filters/stickers don't work properly.
To get the official camera app to work, had to restart the phone (which I have to do to get all camera apps working)
My phone hasn't gotten any updates, still Android 5.0, seems my carrier isn't getting the update so I can't tell if that can work or not
Has anyone else had issues where starting the camera app sometimes freezes the whole phone requiring a reboot? The camera image updates, but everything else is unresponsive. Often when using Kik I've noticed the autofocus on the in-app camera is unusable, and I'll end up using the camera app instead. And then the camera app will do this, which is quite irritating. Once it does work though, it's really nice. The cameras on this are excellent!
I had this issue. I had to restore the system through the Xperia Companion. Problem solved.
Now I upgrade to Pie. Works perfectly.
Yeah, I haven't had this issue yet with Pie. But I'm also somewhat in the habit of avoiding the camera app when I can.
