**** Cradle mod not working!!!
I modded my MDA cradle. Didn't work out. I think that the USB bus isn't suplying enough power. When I put the MDA in the cradle it syncs without any problem and the charging LED goes to yellow, even the power meter says "charging". Strange enough after half a day on the cradle the MDA doesn't charge. It completely depleted. So I needed the charge it using the external charger.
I rececked the connections and used my multimeter to verify the power. It does supply the 5V. But I think that the 500mA is not enough to charge the 2A beast.

charging issues
Maybe you already did this but make sure that you turn off the unit while charging. Make it turn off automatically after a few minutes. It will occasionally wake up and if it's not set to shut off it won't charge enough compared to the screen draw on power. The USB 500ma is enough it just takes longer (around 8 hours) compared to the 2amp charger ~1-2 hrs.

Well, you're right I don't turn it off. I'll try that for a change.
Thanks
Niels, also make sure that you connect the MDA cradle directly to a port on your PC/Laptop, and not via a USB hub. USB hubs are known for not being able to provide enough juice.
MDA Cradle Mod and now it is charging
Got it working now!. I remodded the craddle (yes soldered again!) I connected it to my computers' 5V circuit. No problems now. I can leave it on AND charge it.
Sorry if this is a duplicate thread, I searched quite a bit for a solution but only found stuff for the TP, not the TP2.
Ok, so I know with the original TP you could charge it from a computer, but it was not as fast as a wall charger unless you had the fix that allowed it to charger faster on the computer.
Well on my TP2, it really won't charge the phone, and if I am using something like wifi router that uses a lot of power, it will actually lose power while charging off my computer...
Is there a fix to bypass this so I can have my phone plugged into my computer and charge it???
make sure in your battery settings the box that says "when device is turned on, do not charge the battery when connected to the PC" is unchecked. meaning an empty box. if its checked off, uncheck it. also, this might help, when plugged up to ur computer, cut ur backlight all the way down or low. the phone will use less battery that way and will charge faster when hooked up. either way though, charging thru a pc is trickle charging, meaning its gonna b slower than wall charger anyways. i havent came across the fix u mentioned for the TP.
trickle charging is when battery is fully charged and is still pluged on charger, then charging change to trickle power charge, around 20mA+actual request of the phone. this way if you have phone/any electronic in general on charger for a month, it's still kept fully charged.
---
htc have two modes of charging slow 500mA and fast 1A (1000mA)
to say to the phone that charger is fast, you need to have one pin on mini-USB connected to ground. this pin is unused by mini-usb specifications but htc is using it for this trigger.
---
cut open mini usb connector on usb to mini usb cable and wire the unused PIN to power ground (get pinouts pics or use multimeter!!!!! don't guess try it)
then you still facing another problem, USB is strictly specified to not exceed 500mA (with 10% toleration) no trick to get more then this from one usb. some computers are not so precise with rules though and could give slightly over 550mA
to get 1A you need to use two usb ports in parallel. like some china made usb harddrives enclosures
get an additional USB connector and add it to your cable.
NOTE: DON'T CONNECT DATA LINES ON THIS SECOND CONNECTOR!!!!!
data = inner 2 pins
power = outer 2 pins
* you can get an USB extension cable, wire 2 power lines out of it, connect to your usb - miniusb cable... this way you still can use the other usb for other device
NOTE: this is not a standard though accepted solution. I haven't saw or heard of any burned computers cos of this but wouldn't be surprised to see one.
anyway if I had that need, I would go for it
when making this cable, be very sure 5v wire is not touching data lines!!! Test it properly before plugging to PC! I have brand new laptop now, the old one is lying with DEAD usb host below table just because I believed there have to be protection against this. There IS NOT.
NOTE: NEVER LAUGH ON MY PAINTINGS!!
Or you can buy one for $4
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Othe...medium=shoppingengine&utm_campaign=googlebase
actually NOT.
without grounding the special pin on mini USB side of the cable, mobile would charge by 500mA no matter if you put 100A charger in. or paralleling 20 USBs
Wow...I'm pretty tech savy but that was a bit confusing...so I get the gist of that, but how is it that all it takes is plugging the usb chord into the htc ac power supply will fix that? why isn't it required for all that jazz of rewiring crap on the ac adapter as well, since it comes from the same usb chord...?
eh, have mercy with that english slang we are mostly not englishers here
What you meant was, why htc AC (wall) charger charges on hi power without those tricks?
Because the connection is already made there.
That's not a hidden trick anyway. Not even trick. It's a standart feature.
HTC is, not like other manufacturers, sticking to specs and mobile would not demand more then 500mA from standart usb connection.
usb is defined to be max 500mA
if you want a connector which is based on standart (htc's usb-hub can use usb cables), and you want a fast charging without violating standarts than this was the best resolution, to use pin which is generaly unused to trigger-detect 1A charger.
But as htc didn't made computer fast-charge cables. A serious company will not release such a cable. Connecting power from two usb hosts together - I feel pain by doing it, but it proved computer stabilizators don't mind it and though I don't think it's giving really double, it's giving more then 500mA.
But here you have to "imitate" original htc AC charger by shortwiring that trigger pin the way as it is there.
hope this was your question about.
Just final note in red when making this cable, be very sure 5v wire is not touching data lines!!! Test it properly before plugging to PC! I have brand new laptop now, the old one is lying with DEAD usb host below table just because I believed there have to be protection against this. There IS NOT.
Any way to disable rapid charging?
I have a generic USB extender and used it to extend my charger cable by a couple of feet. When the phone showed "full charge in 5 hours" I realized it's making the charge speed extremely slow. The USB cable is a regular sized USB male on one end while the other end is a regular sized USB female. You could use that to slow down your charging to about the speed you'd get by charging from a USB 2.0 connector on any PC/laptop.
One the same note will using a standard charger from other cell phones (that I have like 300 of) and the cable that came with phone cause any problems or just charge slow. I travel a lot and have several USB devices I bring and don't want to bring multiple chargers if I don't need to.
Thanks.
It will just charge slow.

You need a compatible charger for it to fast charge. Using a regular charger wouldn't put it in that mode. I wanted to know if there was an option to turn it off with a compatible charger.
Why do you want to turn it off.
I could swear I saw something in the framework to disable fast charging but I'm not 100% sure.
I'll try to remember to keep an eye out for it after the December updates drop from Google and I have to redo my framework mods.
As far as options in the GUI go, I don't recall ever seeing any option to disable fast charging.
To answer another question, someone may want to disable fast charging to ensure their battery lasts longer (short term + long term). Or to prevent overheating when charging in the sun. And other reasons too.
You could always buy a MicroUSB to USB-C adapter. Or the phone may have come with one too now that I think about it.
Then use an older MicroUSB charger to charge your phone.
Charging via computer is only like 500mAH compared vs. 2000+mAH charging from the stock charger.
Count me amongst the club who would prefer to slow-charge my phone overnight at least.
And possibly slow my car charger down to maybe just 1000mAH to prevent overheating while the phone is docked underneath my windshield under the hot sun.
Hi Guys,
I have a thinkpad which has regular USB and also a fast charge USB port. They have worked fine in the past on other phones and I used to see at least 1 amp charge rates. (on the fast charge port)
Using either port on the 20 X I only get about 200 ma charging rates?
I'm using "Ampere" to get the charging rates, it is definitely charging slower than normal...
Have you guys noticed this?
Also of note, It charges really slow from my car as well. On the hour drive home the phone only went up 4%. (This is a VW using android auto)
I think all bets are off when your using 3rd party chargers. I think Huawei might have some official accessories that you may need to buy.

I have a bunch of phones and every single one of them charges at normal charging rates off my laptop and in my car, this is pretty strange...
Huawei uses a completely different setup from QC 3 from charger to cable . How does it charge with the supplied charger and cable that you received with your phone? If you buy extra chargers for home or car make sure they say they do Huawei "Supercharge". They are a little hard to find but they are out there. Make sure the USB cable is rated for 5a(amps)

I haven't even used the included charger and cable, but plugged in at the house I do see 2 amp charge rates which is great.
The downside is that in the car with android auto I can't really plug it into anything other than the car's USB and that give me a really slow trickle charge. This is where a bulk of my charging occurs since I drive for work so much. Basically I have never charged my other phones outside of the car, I just use android auto all the time and the batteries are always topped off. So not being able to charge from car or laptop is not a deal breaker at all, but it certainly means I need to start carry a charging cube around everywhere.
Just seems odd for such an expensive flagship phone to not charge correctly via USB like every other phone I have ever had.
Try the supplied charger and cable just to make sure you do not have a defective phone. When you plug in the cable to charge watch your screen. It should show your battery percentage and a short lighting bolt. Then in just a second it should change to a long lighting bolt and say super charging. If it does that you know your phone is charging correctly. Take your Huawei supplied cable and use it on your laptop and car and see if that doesn't increase your chances speeds.

I gave the original cable a shot and it still basically charges at 200-250ma from my laptop. Very odd indeed. Not even seeing the normal 500ma that you would get on a regular USB port. (Tried both standard and high charge rate USB ports on my lenovo)
Anyone else seeing this behavior?
Hello,
I have a question about the charge of my new S20 (Exynos version):
1) connected to the charger it charges (small 'lightning bolt" on the battery symbol).
2) connected to a booted PC it charges (same for the lightning symbol)
3) connected to the same PC in standby: the symbol appears for a fraction of a second then disappears and it does not charge. It is the same cable and USB plug as in case 2.
4) PC in standby: other USB port / other cable: it is the same, charge symbol very brief then nothing, it does not charge.
Another phone charges without any problem with the same cables/USB socket on the PC in standby ... I do not understand what is wrong.
Same issue with the S20 plugged to another PC ... but ok with other phones
An expert opinion? Thanks in advance.
Its charging board issue
Same issue faced in my s9 then chaging baord changed by service center
I don't understand the "charging" board problem : the phone charges with the same cable when the PC is on, with a charger, with USB in the car...
I was thinking that maybe when the PC is in sleep mode there is not enough power going through the USB port and it won't charge this phone model ?
I think I get a possible answer to my question :
---> using a shorter (about 1 feet only - Aukey brand) USB-A to USB-C cable allows to charge the S20 while the PC is in sleep mode. Any longer cable will only charge the other phones.
--> I guess the S20 require more "power" from an USB port to start recharging. Of course while the PC is on it must have more power as it works even with a longer cable.
Are all the jacks/ports clean and free of debris?
Are the cables good? Partial cable failures happen and charging anomolies is how it will first manifest its self many times.
You'll get much faster charging using the Samsung brick... best to limit charge to 90%, ideally 60-70% to lengthen battery life.
Yes the phone is 2 weeks "old" so no debris in port. It is working flawlessly except when trying to charge it when the PC is in sleep mode ... if the cable is too long.
But I'll use the S9 or S20 charger so it'll be ok.
It doesnt sound like your phone's fault but usb port in your motherboard - if it works fine while using charger then i wouldnt worry

Agreed ! Even I think the USB port is working fine with every other (older) phone ... but it seems this S20 requires more "energy" to start charging. It is the same while trying with a laptop in sleep mode.
Why would you charge it over pc? Isnt it super slow?

Explanation:
The ports on yor pc when it's sleeping are in power saving mode. It works with a shorter cable because of something called inner resistance of the cable. When the cable is longer but made of the same material it has a bigger resistance therefore the phone does not get enough current to charge. You see the bolt icon for a bit because of a current peak coming from the usb port. Then the phone thinks "damn, that's not enough power" and stops charging.
All of this means that when you connect your phone to charge when the pc is not sleeping it becomes barely enough current to charge, but nevertheless it becomes something, that's why it charges.
Faulty charging board and etc. is not the problem, there is actually no problem. Your phone just needs a current maybe over 1A/5V to start charging, your port probably doesn't have that capacity, especially when pc is sleeping.
Just use the charger, it's much faster and doesn't stress the battery for a long periods of time.

Thanks a lot for you technical explanations. I am using a wallcharger instead of charging the phone overnight hooked to the Pc in sleep mode.
