HTC 10 vs Samsung S7

Hello, I have been a long time fan of HTC, and still use my One S from 2012. Back then the one series was the best in every department, the Samsung equivalent has was nowhere in sight.
Anyway time has finally come to upgrade, and looking at the reviews I am torn between the HTC 10 and Samsung S7. I know there must be plenty of threads on this topic, but I couldn't find any using the search, so please link if there is any. I created a list below, but I wanted the opinions of the owners to tell me if they are accurate.

A lot has been said about the camera problems with the HTC 10, the latest update v1.51 was supposed to address the issues. Have any owners received the update and has it improved to match the S7? And I guess with further updates the camera can only get better...
But on the other hand, surely with time the S7 will become unlockable and easy to install custom ROM's? And if so I could easily install a better ROM with near stock android UI
Not sure what to decide. What do owners think of my list, do they agree with the things I have said??

Well I have the S7 Edge and I decided to buy the HTC 10 because I was sick of all the issues the S7 Edge had, if that tells you anything.

At the end of the day, both devices are more than capable, so I'm forced to be a little nitpicky and look at what I consider big cons for me that I've read about throughout my research on both. I do want the HTC 10 far more.
HTC 10 has been experiencing random screen issues, such as pink/yellow tints.
SG7 has been experiencing random pink tints, too, plus an apparent dead zone on the lowest point of the screen. I've also read about the camera glass randomly cracking/shattering. The entire phone being incased in glass makes me very nervous. A bump/drop could mean a shattered phone instead of a cracked screen.
Sadly, due to my wedding/money issues I'm forced to use my BestBuy credit to upgrade, so if the unlocked HTC 10 does not come to BestBuy, I'm forced into a Exynos G7.

I've got the TMo S7 and will probably switch to the 10 when it's available for Jump.
The S7 is definitely not a bad phone at all. I love the waterproofing on it and only have a few minor complaints. The speaker isn't great, probably takes a hit from the waterproofing. I get a lot of accidental touches on the edges of the screen from my palm when using it one handed. Lastly, the home button is pretty loud. I use my phone a lot in bed while my fiancée is asleep, and it just seems deafeningly loud (exaggerating a lot, but in a quite bedroom it is noticeable).
I haven't used an HTC device in a few years so I'm not sure how it will compare, but I'm looking forward to giving it a shot.

I went from a Note 5 to the HTC 10 (just look at my signature for order of devices...I have zero brand loyalty). Couple buddies of mine went to the S7E. Nice device, but just like the Note 5, forget modding it. To me it looks like a bigger fisher price phone. Flashy design, flashy bold colors, and absolutely zero customization. No thanks...never again. I would have went for a Nexus phone but I like the SD slot so HTC 10 was my pick.

Sammy Exynos versions are unlockable and have a dev community going. It's just the US versions that are locked down.
Sammy isn't as forgiving as GTC, though, and rooting and such will void your warranty.

I don't have a preference between LCD and AMOLED, honestly. AMOLED has its strengths, but I like better color reproduction vs. saturation. This is, of course, a personal preference. And I'm pretty sure the 10's camera is aboooooouuuut as good as the S7's, especially post-update. Dxomark thought so, anyway.
I'd hate to inflame a useless Samsung vs. HTC flame war, but Samsung's button placement and UI make me want to smash their phones off of a concrete floor, douse them in lighter fluid, burn them, and fire them into the sun.

I'm on T-Mobile, and with the locked bootloader on the S7, I'm about to JUMP again to the HTC 10, personally. The S7 is nice if you don't care about rooting, but I'm too much of a tinkerer to do without. There's a workaround for adoptable storage on the S7, but it causes the reporting of the storage to mess up and display wrong information, which makes me wonder if that's why Samsung left it out. The cameras will likely be fairly even since the update, and honestly, I listen to music more than I take pictures, so the 10 is better suited for me. I also am not a fan at all of Samsung's UI, but I thought I'd be able to fix that with root.

I'm on T-Mobile as well and have one more Jump until June with Jump on Demand. I'm waiting for the 10 to hit their stores so I can make up my mind.
I obviously can't make a pro's and con's list since I don't own the 10 but I can make a list of what I'm worried about switching from the S7 Edge to the HTC 10.

If HTC would have built this exact phone around a 5.5in display and a 3600 mAh battery, it would have made my decision much easier. I like the speaker design and I love how they didn't skin Android's UI to death. Granted it doesn't really effect me too much since Nova is the first app I install on every phone.
I guess we will see what happens on the 18th when the phone hit's T-Mobile shelves.

You could run into a Verizon store and check it out. That's what I did as I was waiting for mine to arrive. I'm very satisfied with the 10. Only downside I've had is screen brightness outdoors.

Perhaps not the best phone at everything but the best at its price point at the moment imho.
Depends really what is important to you.

I was trying to decide between this and S7 edge. The latter is a slightly better phone (smaller footprint, better screen and camera, bigger battery, higher cool factor, wireless charging, waterproofness...) and if it was £50 more than Op3 I would have gone for it. But I could not justify the £200 difference and went for the Op3.
And I have no regrets whatsoever. The phone feels a lot more premium that I had expected, it is blazing fast, the batter is also quite good and I have no issues with the screen at all. It is by far the best phone I have ever owned and I generally switch phones every six to eight months so have tried a few.
There is a 15 day money back guarantee so I recommend that you go for it and if you don't like it you can always return it. I suspect that will not be the case though...

Can't speak for anyone else but my favorite things about this phone are:
1) Quick charging. With the Dash charger is very quick, inline with what's advertised. I've charged the phone on a plane using a DC charger and it was fast as well.
2) The finger print reader is super fast.
3) Overall the phone feels fast, much faster than my old Moto X Pure.
Things I don't like:
1) Screen is too dim using adaptive brightness.
2) Sound is weak compared to the Moto X Pure.

the samsung S7/e definitely has better specs, but even if it had a clean stock version of Android (which it definitely does not, TouchWiz sucks), the OP3 is a far more cost effective phone.
A better comparison since now it's almost the same price is the Nexus 6P ($404 on Amazon Prime Day (64GB) for example, and 32GB model has been $380 several times now).
Main differences between these two is:
- QHD vs 1080p (you won't notice unless you do VR)
- OP3 has an alert slider (and disables Automatic DND rules) vs N6P has normal DND mode w/ automatic rules etc
- Camera is better on Nexus 6P (unnoticeable during the day, but during low light photos you can tell)
- Camera App is MUCH faster on OP3 - both at launch and taking photos
- OP3 is smoother/faster & keeps more apps in RAM
- Fingerprint Sensor on front vs on back (both incredibly fast, location is a preference)
- OP3 has optional Capacitive buttons vs N6P has only software buttons
- N6P has Slightly bigger screen (5.7" vs 5.5") and is slightly (20g) heavier - but both are equally thin
- Stock Android M (gets faster updates) vs Oxygen OS (slightly slower updates but has more customization features)

i enjoyed this phone, wanted to keep it, but my 6P takes slightly better pictures. I have kids which i like to photograph whenever i get a chance and it's really important they look best. Its not like the camera is bad or anything, i loved it, in fact. Just think i would stick to my Nexus for now. I also want to try the Axon 7 and need to make the $ back for it lol. However, it was tough to make that decision yesterday

The cons for me;
- no Do not Disturb software. Have to use the slider button. It tends to override 3rd party apps too. May have found one working, but reliability is questionable
- no automated night mode, weak screen dimming software. Again have to use 3rd party, Lux, but having some problem with that app (slows down notification panel)
- I was on a cheap chinese phone last year, but it had a 4000mah battery. Kind of hard to get back to a flimsy 3000mah. Had to install xposed, greenify, Forcedoze, Amplify, trying to boost it to have a decent battery. I couldn't care less about Dash Charge. I charge my phone once a day, and that's while I sleep. I don't carry the Dash charger with me. That is not practical and I hope the people at 1+ and other companies stop ****ing around with the battery size. Device is really light. Really could have used better battery.
- what a poor support. Still couldn't get a refund on the case and tempered glass they had to cancel due to out-of-stock (but still charged me). Ticket is still open going back and forth. Just because of that I will think twice before ordering directly from them.
- I am not a fan of sound coming out from the bottom of the phone. I like ZTE Axon 7 take on stereo sound.
pros
- dev friendly, so roms will most likely fix most software issues
- seems pretty solid. No freeze/crash/random reboots so far, and the only slow downs I experienced in the UI are caused by some compatibility issue I have with Lux permanent notification.
- I like that the home button is capacitive. Won't break due to over use (happened on my last phone)
- providing I find a stable and bug-limited rom, best android phone I owned

You certainly will notice the difference of the Op3's Pen Tile 1080p Amoled display compared with a QuadHD Amoled, even in normal use. That's in direct comparison. Use the Op3 for a while and you likely forget.
As to value, the OP3 is clearly better value than £600 flagships but for me, the benefits the S7(E) has are worth the extra. (I cycle a lot and the water resistance is incredibly useful as is the bright screen).
If the above is not too important I'd thoroughly recommend the OnePlus.
(Still, mine is provisionally sold and soon on its way to its new and probably happy owner).

The previous comments all pretty much sum up what I would have to add. Highly recommend the phone...it's worth every penny of the $399 and then some. Very satisfied with my purchase.
I'm going to make one observation about the screen though. 95% of the time, I can't discern a difference between the OP3's 1080p screen and my old Nexus 6 1440p screen. That 5% kicks in when I want to view photos that I've snapped on the phone. Zooming in to those photos creates a considerable loss in detail. This was not the case with my Nexus 6. Zooming into photos retained so much detail and clarity, even though the N6 camera is not as good as the OP3 camera.
My two cents!

Op3 have some flaws,but not everyone experiencing,which are mostly software related which can be fixed with updates ... But it doesn't mean a flawed phone, rather it is best phone on which money can be spent without too much thinking.
By the way every phone whether it cost some penny or our whole arm and leg, has some flaws , that doesn't mean phone is not good.
Therefore you have read several review blog,device specific sections here on xda which will help you to know what are most common problems with particular phone.If these problems are to severe that software update or dev community can't fix then you have to make careful decision before purchase.

About One plus 3 - It is very strong device,its perfomance is strong in every department,and is above the money you pay .
and that Dash Charge its awesome, ridiculously fast ,70 minutes and is goes from zero to hero

For me it's all about development. This device is more stable, faster and nicer than my previous g3. S7 is fine phone and even tw improve a lot, but on open phone, there are unlimited possibilities, on s7 you have just one.

I would agree that side-by-side you can tell a difference, but it's irrelevant for day to day use.
Also, far more noticeable is the difference in both DPI, and in colors (unless you enable sRGB mode on both phones).

No dash charging on custom ROMs sucks, but OP should be releasing source code for this later this month right?

I can't speak for other countries, I live in The Netherlands for the record.
Now, the big plus for me is the price.
The oneplus 3 only costed me € 399,-
If I were to look for other flagships, I would look at these prices
Galaxy S7 : € 650,- on average
Nexus 6P : € 530,- on average
LG G5 : € 550,- on average
Now my last phone was a 2013 Nexus 5 and honestly I didn't feel that upgrading to a 5X was worth it.
But then if i look at other flagships, prices around here seem to rise exponentially.
Yes, ofc I think that an S7 is a great phone, but € 250,- better on average? (Considering all the bloatware you get with it, Its really not worth that much more. Also no support for development really with locked bootloaders.)
Pro's
- Clean version of android with more features
- No bloatware
- 6GB of RAM (For people who say RAM doesn't matter, try using a Nexus 9 Tablet with its 2GB of memory with a 64-bit OS. You will want to throw the thing out of your window before the end of the day.)
- price to value
- great fingerprint scanner
Cons
- only 1 place where you can buy it (online)
- doesn't have all the features like an S7 has (water resistant etc. )
- Slower updates compared to a Nexus device
- No option to use a schedule for "Do Not Disturb", instead you have a slider. (I like the slider but why the **** did they take out the damn scheduler. I like my downtime every night from 23:00 till around 07:00, Now I have to do it manually.)

Let me just add bad camera quality on custom ROMs.

Thinking about switching from Nexus 5, few questions

Does the 1080p resolution result in visible pixels? How well will the phone do with a VR headset due to the low resoution for a 5.5 inch display?
Battery life of my N5 never was good, after 3 years of use it's really bad. How much of an improvement can I expect?
How much more power in real life experience can I expect from the Snapdragon 820 compared to the N5's 800?
Do you think the switch is generally worth it? I was thinking about waiting for the new Nexus devices, but the pricing of the N6P makes me think I won't get as much bang for the buck as I do when buying the Oneplus 3.

It's a great phone if you plan to run stock BUT there's no dash charging for custom ROMs AND there is no good camera on custom ROMs.

1. cannot see any visible pixels. I don't use VR, so I can't comment on that.
2. Battery life will be a generous increase, at least for me and my usage it was. And I came from a 5X. It last me a full day and then some.
3. Compared to a N5, day to day usage you should see a noticeable increase in speed, especially if you decrease animations to .5. where you will see the most benefits will be multi tasking, gaming and tab intensive browsing.
4. I've had both the 5x and 6p, the former being my favorite. Unless your a huge Nexus fan, in my opinion i would get the OP3. It is just as easy to unlock the bootloader and run custom Roms. At the moment custom is kind of limited because the kernel source not being released, no dash charge. But all the Roms are here, including AOSP. (Slim 6) I'm using stock oxygen rooted, fits my bill. The only other thing would be the 2016 Nexus' but I'm not a big fan of HTC, the RAM will be less and I'm not sure they will be able to beat the OP3 all around.. Check my Sig, I've had a few devices and this is by far my favorite.
Again, these are just my experiences/opinions.

both the 2016 Nexus 5" and the OP3 will likely be amazing and powerful. Camera on the OP3 is not as good as N6P though, FYI. performance is much better than any other phone though. minor customizations are nice too
The only thing i'd recommend is avoiding the 2015 Nexus 5X.

1. Personally I use VR alot and I don't see any noticeable problem ....it performs like any other 1080 device (comparing with my 5inch 1080p s4) ...even though it's 5.5 inch it still looks good in Vr...coming to those heating ....even one plus 3 gets heated up after using VR for a long time and reaches to 40-45° Celsius or even more sometimes
2.It gives more than 5hours of screen on time to me ....and since warranty isn't void when rooting you can use a custom kernel or lower the clock speed to improve battery life even more
3.personally I never used N5 and coming to performance of AOSP or close to AOSP Roms they perform well even in a snapdragon 400...but snap820 gives a boost in gaming ...games run smoothly and the device can even have another game in its memory and you can keep switching without any lags and there is negligible heating while gaming
4.i'm sure the new Nexus will be costlier ...but if you are a VR fan you might be expecting alot from Google's upcoming daydream and I don't really know what exact hardware it actually needs and Google said that no current device will fully support daydream ...and it's just axon 7 which is said to be daydream ready for now ....you can buy one plus right now or wait for Nexus to come and decide between the 2 ....it will be your final decision ....personally I think you must go for one plus 3 because it's really a "value for money " type of device

I switched from the Nexus 5 as well and I do not regret it. The device is amazing and you will not get anything better for 400€/$ (IMHO).
The battery life is good so far, but I cannot give you any numbers since I have only used it for about a week and tinkered a lot with it. This makes any estimation for battery life unrealistic. So far I would say it is better than the Nexus 5 but that is all I want to say about this topic .
The larger display, larger storage, better camera and larger RAM are definitely worth an upgrade in my opinion!
That said, my Nexus 5 still works fine with a new battery and cm13 (caf-version (!)) and there are also a few things it does better than the OP3:
* Stronger vibration motor (IMHO) which is useful if you use the device in silent mode most of the time...
* Far more accurate display. I was surprised by the strange colors of the amoled display. I enabled the sRGB mode which mostly fixed this but I did not remember the colors being so different after switching from the Galaxy S1 to Nexus 4 and Nexus 5...
Altogether a very good phone, definitely worth the money and a good upgrade. Make sure to also buy the sandstone-cover if you decide to buy the OP3. The aluminium body makes this thing extremely slippery. And honestly it is still a thin device, even with the cover included.

They did do a fix, but I still dont think it would use all 6 gigs. I see it as more than future proof

From S7E to HTC 10

So. I'm seriously considering getting an HTC 10. Reasons below
Performance on the S7E SD820 is inconsistent
Battery life has taken a turn for the worst
Audio quality is not up to snuff
Fragile construction
Edge screen is visually striking, but false touches are annoying
Simple question: how is HTC 10? Is the performance as good as I think it is? Any annoyances I should know of?

I find performance to be decent. I can quickly switch between 5 apps, keeping each one in memory with no problem. *However* the phone does tend to show quite a bit of visual jank. So not everything is butter smooth 60fps all the time (I'd say around 20% it hits 60fps and around 80% it lags to something closer to 30fps ) I've tried multiple ROMs and kernels to see if I could get consistent 60fps in any but all of them eventually janked.
I've seen the false touches you're referring to on a friend's S7E and the HTC 10 doesn't have anything like that. Maybe the touch latency is a tiny bit higher but quite accurate.
I use my phone without a case because I love how it feels in the hand. I've dropped it a couple of times but I've had no scratching because of the skin I've put on it.
Overall I think is an okay phone that's not worth the $700 I paid for it. Having now the OP3 and other $400 smartphones on the market, meh

with the device's real life performance and few bugs and amazing development so far for a device which is only few months old.... suggestion would be go for 10 or wait for a nexus device which might be released by oct end and supposedly to be manufactured by HTC itself...

I'm using 10 and 7E for a time. And with me, the 10 is sooooo !!!! Better. Really good designs, manly, good dev support, great battery. And believe me, the note 7 is sooo !! Ugly... i'm hand-on this phone yesterday. HTC 10 still my main phone for now.

I had the S7 Edge and I have to say the reason why I moved to the HTC is for the music player which is fantastic by comparison to the S7 which is oversaturated in bass. When I got the HTC I found it felt like an ordinary phone as I was so used to having an uber stylish phone(S7) in my hand and the screen being much smaller took some getting used to. I have to say its quite a different experience and I believe the HTC 10 is clearly the better phone as it has a more all round feel to it.
The S7 has a way better camera and the screen is marginally better, the S7 clearly hjas its benefits so tbh I think you should go to a phone store and try the HTC out before you commit to buying the HTC unless you intend to have both in which case its win win.

I came to the 10 from the S7Edge in June after the S7E took an unfortunate 3 ft fall to the floor and shattered the screen. Decided that since I couldn't protect the "edge" screen without giving up touch sensitivity, I'd give the 10 a try. So far, it's much better than the S7E was in almost every regard.
1) Cellular/WiFi/BT. All 3 seem stronger on the HTC. I don't drop calls, can pick up my WiFi 3 houses away (S7E was in my back yard at best). BT had weird connection issues with the S7.
2) Battery much better. I don't care that the S7E has a larger battery. The 10 has been getting me an average of 24-28hrs total with 4hr screen while streaming BT audio from Spotify for 12 hrs per work day. S7E I had to have a charger, because at about 10hr, battery would be at 5-10%.
3) Camera-sure the S7E may have a better camera for speed shots and low light, but I have not had nearly as much of the odd overprocessed photos I had with the S7E in my experience with the 10 (in point and shoot "auto" setting). In manual, I can actually get better photos with some tweaking
4) Screen-S7E takes it here with one large exception....you can't protect that beautiful edge. The 10 may not have perfect protectors, but at least there are some decent tempered glass screen protectors. Also think that the screen on the 10 is still a very good screen overall.
5) Performance, I'd say that the 10 is faster response. Now, I don't play games. I use my phone primarily as a communication, music, social media, google, ordering device. I can't say how it'll compare in a game, but in multi-tasking, I find the 10 faster. Could be due to TW being so bloated (even with Sammy's supposed "slimming"). Which bring me to my next point
6) Sense. MUCH better than TW. Can't say how much I prefer the setup and ease of Sense compared to TW.
7) Charging-S7E took a long time to charge even with stock "quick" charger, and if you go for wireless, then be prepared to have it sit even longer. The 10 charges much faster.
There are some things that take some getting used to. First 2 weeks, I kept trying to "press" the home/fingerpring button like the S7E. Button location took a bit to get used to.
Overall, I don't regret changing out to the 10. Great device that unfortunately isn't getting the type of love it really should.

Just for clarification. That you don't get a overblown UI (sense, TW,...)

Have the 10 and opo 3. Opo 3 is what i like to use because of AMOLED and it's snappier and better to hold in the hand imo. Only cons for the 10 is that the display colors are not popping like AMOLED and software is not stock Android but pretty close to it.

I've come from a Nexus 6p to the HTC 10 and prefer the sense overlay rather than stock android, with the 10 i think they've got it right its more or less stock but with some good added features, I also listen to a lot of music with headphones and this phone has the best sound i've listened to yet buy some distance, got to just add as well the Nexus 6p gets rave reviews but i bent 2 of them IMO they are massively over rated and this phone should be right up there on anyone's shopping list, this HTC 10 feels much better construction than my 6p, i was on my 2nd Nexus by now there's not a mark on my HTC...

Uses Sense. But the latest version of Sense is quite a bit less bloated and heavy than the latest version of TW.

Purchasing a M9 now (mid-2018)?

I am evaluating purchasing an used HTC M9. The price seems to be a real bargain (around 60€), but I am worried that it is still a too old device to be enjoyable.
I own an iPhone 7 Plus now and I said myself numerous times that I would never switch back to Android, but I had lot of fun with Android ROMs years ago and I feel like I would love to try again.
I had both HTC m7 and m8 devices and loved it (more the M7 than the M8 actually). How does the M9 feels like?
How would it work after these years? I will not use it to play games, but I will make phone calls, internet browsing, messaging and lot of normal-light usage.
What is your suggestion? How does your M9 feels like after all these years?

Well, by now, the HTC M9 still has respectable development here on XDA. the SD810 feels hot by the heavy use, but it's not dangerous... the phone doesn't have official updates anymore, keep in mind that, still the phone runs great and the Sense UI is one of the fastest UIs around... it has 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and you can put more space with the microSD, so storage wouldn't be a problem, you will find cheap cases on internet, even the Otterbox Defender is like $7 USD on ebay.
The HTC M9 is like a M8 with steroids...

I've just moved to this phone from a Google pixel after it's untimely death ( kid broke it :'( )and I'm happy with it. Performance wise it's fine and I've only noticed a drop in performance on one game. I also flashed a different ROM without sense and got it just the way I like.
Edit: I thought I would add I have always loved the build quality on HTC devices and this one is just as good. Mine is an old phone my wife used for years and she does not look after them. It's full of dints and scrapes and has been very wet and still works perfect. Even the screen is remarkably scratch free.

€60 is a good price, I've just paid €150 for one, although mine was in mint condition and came with s-off.
My wife is still using my M7 that's still going strong after I replaced it with a Sony Z3 (far too fragile for my lifestyle) and then a Moto X Force (lovely phone just has ribbon cable issues with the OLED)
Only slight gripes are the sound quality in Lineageos, so gone back to stock Nougat, a case is essential if you want it to keep it's sexy looks

All said and done, the 810 is a disastrous chip which gets very hot and has a pathetic on-screen battery life.

for me at that price is a good phone, powerful and fast.
There are no overheating problems (at least with last firmware) and the defined disastrous processor is very powerful even if energivorous.
certainly a disastrous purchase at full price but at that price in my opinion is not despicable

Better get a refurbished HTC 10 @ ebay.

Sure not to get M9 is 2018, the battery life, camera, S810 is nor very well. Maybe you can try other budget phone.

Camera is NO good on the M9!!!

G'day mate,
I would give the M9 a wide girth if you have any interest in using it to take photos. It has an impressive 20M camera, but no ability to focus, and take good shots. Here is a post that I made some time ago on the subject.

I have three beautiful daughters, and the inability of this phone to take good photos of them lead me to purchase an Oppo A77. There are may good Android phones in the AU$300 (~EU$180) range. Oppo is an excellent brand to start with, however if you take this path be aware that you need to tinker with it a bit to get standard notifications; check out my Oppo post here -

For that price and just to play around with it, totally.
But the first thing you should do if you get one would be to go to a service, open it up and clean the dust from the speaker grille.
Or try at home with a toothbrush and a vacuum cleaner. (This is what i personally do, but there is clearly still dust in there because the sound is still cracking at high volume. Plus, dust particles still fly away from the speaker, even after cleaning, if i turn the volume all the way up)
But if you clean it professionally, it has an incredible speaker setup.
Camera now. The Nougat 7.0 update made the camwra usable in low light. (You could try to find the link for SunDream's 7.1.2 S.ROM because is clearly the best Sense-based ROM around here. And also the only one that also raised the API level by 1 over the OTA limit.)
Like, is incredible how much right that one update did... But you lose the 9 seconds of exposure time from the "More Light More Fun" Mod (or something between those lines. Somebody posted the link in this thread anyway).
Anyway, (5.1.1 MLMF + Luma Denoise. What i currently use) in daytime and slightly less than perfect light conditions, the camera performs really good.
The bokeh effect is amazing, like the edge detection is on point. It detects those hair strings like magic.
I did a bokeh test on a moving pine tree branch, and it got all the pins right.
Not a single one got blurred over.
I tried it against the Note 8, the S9+ and the iPhone X (stuff that my classmates have) and beat all of them at edge detection from my personal tests.
The others struggle with reflective surfaces from what i observed.
Anyway, performance.
Good. Doesnt slow down over time.
Never cleaned dalvik, never zipaligned, never optimized databases, never installed a new ROM.
I challenged myself to use it with what it had installed (in my case, the update right before 6.0.1).
It can still play PUBG just fine on HD settings... For like 10 minutes because it heats up and throttles.
But older games work just fine on the highest settings.
Screen. If you can ignore the fact that black is some sort of very dark blue, is ok.
You can play VR with it just fine. You wont notice the pixels.
Also, if you set it on Automatic, it actually goes darker than the lowest brightness setting.
(Also, activating the brightness slider from the customization file still doesnt make it darker than Auto Brightness.)
IR is really useful, imo.
Headphone sound was really good for it's time, but it's still just a 24-bit DAC.
Bluetooth is just AptX and you can feel the compression.
But still enjoyable with Viper FX.
I think you can patch AptX HD tho...
Also if i remeber correctly there is a mod that makes the speakers louder.
And finally Dolby Digital Surround 5.1 is very realistic... If the speakers are clean.
Done. Would i recommend it in 2018?
As a secondary phone, totally.
Would a Butterfly 3 be better? Obviously, if you dont care that much about ROMs and customization. (It has water resistance and dual cameras.)
So... For 60$. Have fun. Install as many ROMs you want.
(Also a good time to buy one because MIUI finally got released, so you have a very wide sellection of ROMs.)
