As the title may suggest - is there a way to force 5ghz WiFi. There used to be an option to choose WiFi frequency band but I can no longer find this.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Can't be done anymore unless the ssid is different for 5ghz frequency. If the ssid is the same for 2.4ghz and 5ghz, the phone will automatically pick the strongest signal.
Maybe there's an app or something that allows you to force it.
Ah...explains why I can't find it :/
Thanks for the quick reply!

I have separate SSID's (names) for 2.4/5Ghz. I just "forget" the 2.4 Ghz AP and so it is not available. Not related but there is a setting in Hotspot setup where you can select which band you want to use. Maybe that's where you saw it?
No, you definitely used to be able to select the frequency band in advanced settings.

Keep in mind i don't have a Pixel 2 XL yet, this was from a different phone but it might apply.
Wifi > 3 dot menu > Advanced > Wifi frequency band > 5Ghz Only.
I'm not sure if that helps, but i thought i'd try.
I see what you mean. When I say you used to be able to I mean on older versions of android on older Google phones. It seems to be a setting that has been phased out for some reason.
My modem has two different passwords, one for 2.4 and one for 5g

It's on LG8, it doesn't happen to my home wifi, but ANY other WiFi, I have to do this process.
Slide down Notification bar, Toggle WiFi, hit settings, select WiFi to connect (always an open one that needs to be authenticated via website.), says connected, but instantly disconnects and I lose data for ~3-5 seconds and it disconnects the WiFi. Then I have to go back into WiFi and reconnect. The WiFi is just disconnected from always says "saved".
It happens on any LG8 rom I am on, including the 15 toggle mod roms. Not sure if it's my device or what.

I have the problem too. Stock or Blazer or Team Sonic. Happened on 2 phones so it doesn't seem HW related.
*#0011# then menu and wifi and turn off power save. Have to do this every time phone reboots but solves the problem.

What frequency is your WiFi access point or router using? There is a known bug introduced by the LG8 that borked your ability to select which frequency band to use or a hybrid setting, so the phone is stuck in whichever was selected before the LG8 update. So if your phone had been set for the 5 GHz band, then you applied the update, you could no longer connect to 2.4 GHz access points.
Interesting...have not tested but will look at this.
What a silly oversight on sumsungs part.

My router at home that doesn't have this issue is 2.4ghz. I'd assume the same at these WiFi hotspot points since some laptops still only support G freqs.

Hmm. I don't know what to make of that. I actually have never experienced this problem myself, and never changed my frequency setting under the old firmware. Can't even find a link right now to whatever forum post reported this problem in the first place.
I'm on LG8 stock and don't have wifi issues...weird

I have a dual band router and I know that mine will connect to either 2.4G or 5G, although it's usually on 2.4.

The way I understood the alleged bug, the problem only occurs if the user had changed the setting under the old firmware that included the Settings screen to do that. Then the Settings screen went away with the new firmware build.
The I747MVLALH1 OTA Telus update has disabled the ability to change the Wifi frequency band in Wifi Settings Advanced. I had mine selected at 5GHz. Now I can't see 2.4 GHz SSID's. I had selected 5GHz because it solved a problem with Wifi disconnects.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

OK I'll answer my own question! It seems that others have had this issue as well with other carriers and other than applying this fix:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801993
(which I'm not even sure will work on Telus) you can do a factory reset. I did, and it sorted the problem out.
Oh well ...

in other devices you can select preferred wifi band to connect.
I also miss this feature. I used to have separate SSIDs for each band but some apps don't like sharing across different ssid names even though it is the same network... Don't know if this is still a problem but it hit me the hardest with chromecast.
Mine always craps out when I connect to 5 GHz, stays connected but there's no data.

This on my T-Mobile 811, I can control it at home, but not at work.
Sorry to revive an old thread but I searched to no avail.
Anyone know how/where to set the wifi frequency band on the G4? I want to force it to use 2.4GHz but the option is not there in Advanced Wifi settings. It is there on my Nexus 4 with AOSP but not the G4.
Thanks in advance.
I just discovered this with a little research with people having similar wifi problems. Simply change your router settings to 2.4 ghz band instead of 5 ghz band. For some reason the G4 is having problems with 5 ghz bands.
Or if you cant do that, just connect your phone to the 2.4 ghz band of your wifi if your router is dual broadcasting.

I'm trying it, not sure if it'll work. I've had 2.4 and 5 networks saved, i've just deleted the 5 network, we'll see if it's better.
Adding this line to my build.prop seems to have fixed this issue for me. I'm still testing but my phone isn't having any issues on the 5Ghz AC band.
wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=180

Didn't work for me
not connecting to 5Ghz is NOT a fix at all..
i didn't tried the scan intervall, i'll test it.
but i can confirm that either the reception is low and that the phone love to loose the signal :/
It also sometimes says that it has bad internet conneciton, so it refuse to connect (didn't found the setting to disable this stupidity... I know that on stock android under wifi settings you can disable this behaviour)
Sometimes it is also refusing to connect to a wifi... it just say registering and stoped...
only way to force it : reboot the phone...
hope that a software update will fix these issues.

Hello,
I seem to be having an issue with connecting to my 802.11ac router (Apple's Time Capsule). In "Automatic" mode, it connects to my SSID via 2.4GHz only. When I go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced and choose Wi-Fi Frequency band as 5Ghz it finds 0 networks in the area.
FYI - I'm on 3.1.3 OxygenOS.
Is anyone experiencing similar issues?
Best,
Mash
Edit: To be clear, I have several devices including my laptop that are connected to the 5Ghz band. I've also used a WiFi scanner in my old S6 Edge to verify that there are SSIDs broadcasting in the 5Ghz band.
I use 5 GHz network at home and it works fine with my op3.
Wysłane ze zmywarki
using 5Ghz on Fritzbox, i also use diffrent ssid names for 2,4 and 5ghz and also different passwords
Thanks guys. Are both of you on 3.1.3? I'm trying to isolate the issue here...

Got a 3TB time capsule here. OOS 3.1.3 - on automatic, it only connects to 2G despite having full 5G signal, however if i switch it to 5G only, it finds both main and guest networks in that band and connects fine Try re-flashing stock rom
Thanks - I'll try and do a nandroid backup and reflash to see if that fixes the issue.

Check what frequency and channel width your 5ghz band is set to, one time I changed my 2.4ghz and my ps4 couldn't detect it til I changed back.
Just tried 5Ghz without issue using channel widths 20Mhz, 40Mhz, and 80Mhz.

Thanks guys. I wonder if I've got a lemon.
I've just reflashed 3.1.3 and even then can't find or detect ANY 5GHz SSIDs. This is so frustrating.
I guess a call to support is the way forward.

Check if you are able to connect to a different 5GHz Network. It _might_ be an issue with the router itself.
Mine OP3 connects to 2.4 and 5 without any problems (TP-Link Archer C7).

Try going into advanced wifi settings and setting your network mode to 5ghz only. Inconvenient but will do the job.
