GPS Location On of Off? - OnePlus 5T Questions & Answers

I usually have my location set to on, on my phones, however i'm now considering switching it off to conserve battery life. What do you guys have it set to and how does that work which rely on location settings? Unfortunately my phone isn't rooted so I can't even control location for certain apps using Tasker and after spending a good 3 days configuring my phone, I don't want to root as it will wipe my device!
Any recommendations?

I always have it set at high accuracy on all of my devices and haven't noticed any battery drain from it. Actually setting it off will probably consume more battery as all apps needing to check location will keep on doing that.
I'd say leave it on and forget about it.

good shout, that makes sense.

I use Macrodroid rather than Tasker & this has a adb hack that enables control of a some items such as location & mobile data, all without rooting the phone.

I just use Tasker to switch to high accuracy location with certain apps (such as maps) and then back to battery saving when in normal/every day use. It's never switched completely off though

Do you need root for that?

No but you do need a plugin called AutoTools, and need to run one adb command to give it additional permissions to be able to switch between accuracy modes.
It's a lot simpler than it sounds and I personally think it's worth it!

[Q] Samsung Epic - Battery drain is horrible! How can I fix this.

Please help....
I have read many threads about this, but I don't understand any of them. My battery life is horrible, I am only using it for the occasional phone call, texting and checking my email. It's very frustrating because when I need to use it, the battery is dead (or almost dead and I can't use the camera).
I don't understand all the lingo on here about what version "this" and "that" everyone is using. Downloading certain apps to fix this.....
I'm not very techy and just use my phone for basic things.
PLEASE HELP!!!!
Suggestions:
Turn off bluetooth until you need it, then turn off when done.
Turn off GPS until you need it, then turn off when done.
Turn screen brightness to automatic or lowest setting (your preference).
Turn off 4G receiver if you are out of range or just don't have 4G coverage in your area.
Turn off synchronization if you don't care for email, Facebook, Twitter, etc updates. (Not really necessary if your update interval isn't set for short intervals.)
Utilize Wifi as much as possible, if that is an option available to you. BUT turn it off when you know you will be out of range for a good bit of time.
Toggle Airplane mode after each phone reboot. (Stupid bug)
Utilize the TouchWiz program manager (long press on home screen and under Samsung widgets).
Kill the OmaDrmConfigService process via Settings > Applications > Running Services. (This appears again with each phone reboot, unless you find a process killer application in the market.)
If you use Wifi a good bit, it's a good idea to set your Wifi sleep policy to "Never". You can access this via Settings > Wireless & Networks > Wifi Settings: Press menu and select Advanced > Wifi Sleep Policy. Setting to never will not revert back to 3G when you turn off your phone's display as long as wifi is still turned on and within that connected wifi signal range.
If you still get **** battery life, then you can download Spare Parts or BatteryHistory from the market. BatteryHistory is a ripped out piece from Spare Parts, which is really all you need to diagnose your issue.
OR if you don't want to install anything you can key in via the dialer: *#4636*1111# to get to the same menu that both programs above display. (The menu is labeled Battery History.)
From another battery thread that pertains to the two aforementioned programs:

What you do is when you notice that it's doubled on the top drop down box that says "other usage" click on that and change it to "partial wake usage" and anything listed under there is keeping your phone awake. See what is continually running.

Dont ask me to explain this just try it. Use astro and delete the android folder at the root of your sd card and reboot

Did deleting the android folder work or anyone else? I'm trying to see how that can help but if it does good find.
I have no ideawhy but after flashing a few times testing themes on dk28 my battery tanks and my gallery gets slow. The album thumb folder inside there is what fixes the gallery so I usually delete it but I got lazy and deleted my whole folder since it regenerates on boot and my battery came back. Ben deleting it since lol but I flash a lot

Not certain how it helped your battery issue, but good to have that knowledge. I sifted through my folder and only saw cache files for what looked like thumbnails.

Try this:
-Toggle airplane mode every time you reboot. You probably have a "time without signal" of over 50% if you look in settings. Toggling airplane mode resets the radio and so it doesn't keep looking for signal unnecessarily which kills battery
-Gps on doesn't drain battery, only when its being used by an app
-Turn off background data and auto sync. If you don't have facebook/twitter widgets or care about email push notifications then save some power and switch it off.
-Check for apps that aren't letting the phone sleep. Download "spare parts" and it should show you.
-I'm guessing you have the updated Facebook app with chat. I would suggest going offline in chat because it doesn't let the phone sleep and will drain your battery really fast.

This is illegal, if you cant buy an app dont use it.
It's a paid app
WORTH EVERY PENNY
I have automated mine to do the following
As soon as I enter my work car park, it drops the volumes, switches off WIFI
I leave my work car park, volume to max,
I enter home, WIFI on, Volume max
after 11pm - 6.30am everything on silent, wifi & data off
then when i scan my NFC tag in the car, switches on GPS, loads co pilot
re-scan tag, turns off GPS and closes co-pilot

Sounds cool
But mine is too extra complicated to share, I now have over 30
But the most i like is nightmode,
It make brightness 10/255 and opens an app screenfilter
It makes brightness extremely low and this all happens from 12am-3 am

Was thinking the same. Any partial/wakelock issues caused by the program constantly assessing the environment. As it happens I am thinking of using the program to reduce battery drain and shutting down WiFi when out of range of home networks but if it's negated by the situation above it seems pointless for my needs.
Any one care to comment?
I've been using Tasker for a couple of years accross 4 different devices now (X10i, DHD, TF101 and GS3). I have a lot of profiles set up to do various different things and I can honestly say I've never seen a noticeable effect on battery life.
That said though I don't use the GPS location state at all. I imagine that particular state would drain battery pretty quickly. I use the WiFi Near state a lot though and, as I've said, never really noticed a detrimental drain on the battery.
I suppose it depends on what you do with it but overall IMO it's a very well written app. Extremely useful too.

Yep! This is what I was hoping to use it for too. My betterbatterystats has identified my Wifi as the one real drain on what is still a very good battery life. So although I could turn it off myself I just know I will forget to turn it back on at home and would like a program to do it for me. BUT if one negates the other it's not worth the effort.

Well your WiFi has to be on to use the WiFi Near state. You could potentially combine it with a Time state too though. Just for example you could have Tasker turn WiFi on for 1 minute once an hour to check for your network(s) then either turn off again if no network detected or connect and remain on if a network is detected... if that makes any sense!
It would save battery compared to leaving WiFi on all the time.

What effect does it have on, I have a task to turn of Wi-Fi during 10am and 1pm; but I try to turn on Wi-Fi during this period. Will it automatically turn it off again, or allow me to continue to use Wi-Fi?

It will allow you to continue to use it. That sort of profile works as a toggle based on the time state so at 10am it will turn it off - but only at 10am. If you were to turn it on again straight away it would stay on until you either turn it off manually or another profile kicks in which is set to turn it off again. The same goes for anything else such as ringer/silent/vibrate, mobile data, GPS etc.
@Greedyfly: you're welcome

Tasker can do wonders...but it requires you to be some kind of Tasker-scientist to get things done. I recently discovered Llama as well. It's free and simple but capable.
Yeah Tasker does have a reasonably steep learning curve admittedly. By no means insurmountable to most though.
I suppose it depends on what/how you want to automate. Tasker is very powerful but not so simple. Llama is free and easier to use but no so powerful.
Both are good automation solutions. Locale is another one to check out.

I've been using Tasker for the best part of a year now, awesome piece of software. Negligible impact on battery life and it's astoundingly powerful. A few examples of profiles I currently use - detects headphones/bluetooth headset and reads any text and who sent it, useful when cycling or out on the bike. Disables screen lock when at home, I use the phone as a control for my media centre so it remains unlocked at home and turns the screen on as soon as the handset is picked up, controls a variety of connection states according to location and time.
These are just scratching the surface. On top of this I've had direct dealings with the dev on a couple of occasions, genuinely nice bloke who does his damndest to solve problems as quickly as possible. All in all, this and Titanium backup are by far the two most useful pieces of software I've bought:good:

Battery Life 'Tips and Tricks' thread. Make your LG Nitro battery last!

Better Battery Life Tips
I've been using (and tweaking) Android devices since the original HTC Dream (aka G1, Android Dev Phone) was released, and I've had devices that are both good and bad at power consumption. In this thread I will share what I have learned and invite you to share what you have learned as well so that we can all get the most out of our devices.
Please note that I like to keep my smartphones "smart" and don't like to be manually toggling things on and off throughout the day. If you like to geek out 24x7 you can manually turn on/off every feature of your phone every time you use it to conserve juice... that's not me though!
Here we go...
-Consider a Different Browser
It seems like Opera Mobile and Mini are the kings of battery conservation. I tried Dolphin, Boat, Firefox, Chrome, the stock browser, and about 10 others... I didn't see significant differences in battery with any of them, but with Opera I noticed the difference. It makes sense since Opera renders the pages and optimizes the images remotely and then sends the bare minimum amount of data to your device to display the page.
-Location, Location, Location
Android's location related services can be a big drain. There are 3 different location settings you need to know about.
1) Location Access (Settings -> Location access): For maximum savings, you can turn off "Access to my location". However, there are many apps that make good use of your location. If you don't want to cripple them, leave this option turned on but at the very least uncheck "GPS Satellites" to save some juice.
2) Google Apps Location Settings (Settings -> Accounts:Google -> Location settings): Allows Google apps, such as Google Maps, to access your location. Why this needs to be separate from #1 above is beyond me, but turning it on requires the above setting to be on as well. If you don't use Google Maps, Now, Plus, or any other Google services that use your location you can turn this off.
3) Location Reporting aka Latitude (Settings -> Accounts:Google -> Maps & Latitude -> Location Reporting): This is the bad one. Really bad. Wakelock and battery drain city. I don't even know why anybody would want this. Kill it with fire. Set it so that it does not update or report your location.
-Turn off stuff you don't use
This should be common knowledge by now... if you aren't using GPS, Bluetooth, or even 4G... turn them off. If you don't need instant notifications and app updates you can even turn off Auto-Sync. If you decide to do that, I recommend the Synker widget from the Play Store. It is nice and configurable so that you can sync on demand with one touch.
-ROMs and Kernels
I'm not going to go into these too much here... there's a whole development section devoted to them with tons of info. Generally you get the best life from the stock based ROMs. Liquid Nitro and HO!NO!'s v20f (+Wind kernel) are quite good. Next best is probably HO!NO!'s CM9. The CM10.1 ROMS and kernels have a bit of catching up to do at battery consumption, but they keep getting better.
-Kill Google Talk!
If you don't use this program, disable it. It is always trying to do something on the network. Even if you turn off data and wifi you can still get NetworkConnectivity wakelocks from this app trying to do its business! Killing it is the first thing I do after flashing a ROM, especially CM10.1. From home hit: Menu -> Manage Apps -> All -> Talk -> Disable.
*Some report that disabling apps through the Android OS might not stick. If this is a concern for you, download NoBloat or Titanium Backup and freeze this app. Or if you're a nerd like me, use a root file explorer and move or rename the .apk file in /system/app
-Kill Google+ (Plus)
Just like the above, if you don't use it, deactivate it. It also uses data and location services pretty regularly. Disable it in the same way, or use NoBloat or Titanium.
-Kill Google Now
If you don't use it, deactivate it. It uses data and location services pretty regularly. I like its features and keep it enabled on my N7, but leave it off on my phone. To turn it off, go into the Google Search app (long-touch menu/search button), hit Menu -> Settings -> Google Now. You'll see the option to disable it.
-Data-Toggling Battery Saver Apps
These are pretty controversial, almost as much as app-killers were when they were very popular. In a nutshell they turn your data connections on or off based on whether your screen is on or off. They usually will check to see if you are downloading or streaming anything before they shut off the connection. Then, they periodically turn the connection on while the screen is off so that the device can perform a sync to get emails, etc.
Should you use one? If you are running CM10/10.1/AOKP4x then YES USE ONE!! EDIT: THE LATEST VERSIONS OF QUATTRIMUS AND WIND FOR CM10.1 HAVE RESOLVED THE BATTERY DRAIN ISSUE. Use of a battery saver is no longer essential. If you still want to use one, read on...
Whether or not you use a battery saver depends on how you use your phone, and if you are willing to accept the trade-offs. These apps get their savings from maximizing deep sleep time for extended periods with zero data concerns or interruptions. If your usage habits allow the app to do its job, use it. If not, don't use it.
[What follows here is some long drawn out jibber jabber about the pros/cons of these apps. Read it if you like]
Some people love these battery saver apps and swear by them; others hate them. The reason some like them is because they get a few more hours of battery life. The reason why some people hate them is because:
1) They wake the device periodically to do their job... which negates some of the power savings you get from having them. To some people these tiny wakelocks are the most horrible thing ever... even if their impact is quite small compared to the power being saved. These people are usually the ones who live and die by their BBS logs. I'll admit, I was one of those people
2) Syncs are delayed, so messages and notifications do not arrive instantly but when either of the following conditions are met-
a) The screen gets turned on (which triggers data on and autosync)
b) The program hits a scheduled time trigger (usually at user selectable intervals)
3) There's a small lag while data connects when the screen gets turned on. If the screen gets turned on very frequently the constant on/off/syncing can actually hurt the battery more than it helps.
But, if you are ok with the delayed syncs and you set up the sync intervals long enough apart you WILL see a gain in battery life. Your phone will sleep much more soundly as well. With one of these apps my Nitro HD on CM10.1 can sleep all night and will only lose maybe a percent or two.
*Note that these will NOT help you at all when the screen is on, which is a bummer because the Nitro screen sucks down a LOT of power. Also, your usage patterns may make them ineffective for you... in which case you are probably better off without them.
Personally I get about an hour or 2 of extra life if I use one, but it's a trade-off since I lose instant notifications and a there's a slight delay while it reconnects to the network when the screen gets turned on. And the more you turn your screen on/off, the more it disconnects/reconnects/syncs... meaning it is using a bit MORE power than usual for those seconds.
[/jibberjabber]
The following are my favorite data-toggling battery-saver apps. All of them have "free" versions and more advanced "pro/prime/advanced/whatever" paid-for versions. These are not the only ones out there; feel free to report back on ones you prefer. If you find one that you really like, I suggest buying the pro version not only for the additional customization they offer, but to support the devs for a job well done.
1) DS Battery Saver - Super easy to configure and since it kills background tasks before sleeping it puts your device into a nice deep sleep. Also combines the feature of CPU Sleeper if you are rooted... it'll shut off a CPU core when sleeping.
2) Green Power - Works really well. The interface is simple and well laid out. I used it for years before I discovered DSBS.
3) Juice Defender - Another decent app, similar to Green Power. I personally preferred the options and the interface of GP better, but you may not.
4) CleverConnectivity +++Battery - The interface is a bit weak, and I had problems with the full data on/off features working on my P930 w/CM10.1... BUT this program has one very cool feature- it has an option for dropping the connection speed down to 2G/EDGE when the screen is off instead of disabling it completely. This allows syncs to still occur while still saving some power in 2G. I've even streamed Pandora on 2G, so in theory you could do stuff like that too. This feature worked fine on my P930 dispite the normal data on/off failing intermittently. There is a moment of zero data while it toggles between 2G/3G. I think this app might be awesome when development advances some more.
-Underclocking (rooted users)
Capping your max CPU frequency at a lower limit can save power. Quite honestly, for 99% of my daily use I can't tell the difference between the CPU clocked at 1.2ghz and 1.8ghz except that at 1.8ghz my battery bar laughs at me and gives me a wedgie. On custom ROMs there is often a built-in method to set the CPU clock frequency (Settings -> Performance -> Processor). On stock-based ROMs you'll need a 3rd party app like Kernel Tuner, SetCPU, or any of the other 50 options in the Play Store. You can usually safely set your minimum frequency to 192mhz, but some phone/ROM/kernel/voltage combos will cause stability or lag issues with doing this. YMMV.
*If you are using a CPU controlling app like SetCPU that allows for profiles, you might be tempted to set the screen-off frequencies to the absolute lowest setting of 192/192... be careful! This setting could end up costing more power consumption because the CPU has to work for a much longer time to handle the tasks at hand at such a low clock speed. If it was allowed to ramp up a bit the task would be done more quickly and efficiently. Honestly I gave up on setting screen-off profiles. I just use governors based on smartass which have their own screen-off settings integrated. Less adjustments needed, similar results. This leads us to...
-Changing governors (rooted users with custom kernel)
There's about 50 different governors floating around out there. If you don't know what a governor is or what each one does, read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1736168
In short: Any governor that is based on smartass, ondemand or interactive is going to be pretty light on battery, and you may not be able to tell the difference between them in normal use. I like smartassv2 and badass, which are both based on smartass. Conservative may sound the most battery friendly, but usually ondemand does better and is less laggy.
Try some out. Have fun with it. Eventually you'll want to start tinkering with the I/O Scheduler... that's a topic for another thread. There's not much battery life to be gained there anyway.
-Undervolting (rooted users with custom kernel)
WARNING: This can cause instability if done improperly. MAKE A CWM BACKUP BEFORE TINKERING WITH UNDERVOLTING!!! I've never seen *drastic* gains on any device, but you do get a little bit more life, and every little bit helps, right?
So if you want to do it, read this: http://bigfatreality.blogspot.com/2012/03/guide-to-undervolt-android-safely.html and then proceed with caution.
Generally you can aggressively undervolt at lower frequencies, but be careful at higher frequencies because your device needs more power under load and will not like it if it can't get it. If you're a car guy this is like running too lean of a fuel mixture
Kernel Tuner and IncrediControl have nice GUIs for fiddling with voltages. Remember, adjust in tiny increments, followed by thorough testing! If you get a crash or reboot then you've gone too far. DO NOT ENABLE "SET ON BOOT" UNTIL YOU ARE SURE YOU'VE GOT STABLE VOLTAGES!!!
-Screen dimming
Screen backlights use lots of power. This ain't no AMOLED where you can save power by using dark backgrounds- LCDs light up the entire display regardless of what is on them.
I suggest turning off auto-adjust and set your brightness at a level that is just bright enough to be comfortable. I keep mind around 30-40%. Auto-adjust periodically polls the sensor to get light data, and uses a small bit of power to do it each time.
Turn on the 'Status Bar Brightness Control' if your ROM supports it so that you can easily swipe your finger along the top of the screen to brighten or dim the display on the fly. In CM9/10(.1) this option is under Menu -> Settings -> System -> Status Bar -> Brightness Control.
If you MUST use the auto-adjust, consider adjusting the levels that it uses. Make them as dim as is comfortable for you. For stock-based ROMs you'll need a third party app like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwyLDEsImNvbS52aXRvY2Fzc2lzaS5sdXhsaXRlIl0.
For CM/AOKP based ROMs this can be done from the Display -> Brightness sub-menu of your device's settings area. CM10.1 has an excellent and simple adjustment interface.
-Build.prop Tweaks (rooted users)
You can add the tweaks below into your build.prop file that may or may not help with battery life. Download BuildProp Editor from the Play Store and add them. They seem to help a bit, but it could be placebo effect. They certainly don't hurt anything so give them a shot and report back what you get. These seem to work with ICS and JB:

^ this forum keeps adding a space near the 16384... there shouldn't be any spaces. I think they get disregarded anyway if they are put in the file, so no biggy.
^some of these have presets in BuildProp Editor, some you have to enter yourself. I copy/paste them individually. Don't paste the "=" signs though. Everything before the "=" goes under "Property Name", everything after it goes under "Property Value". If you are experienced you can edit the build.prop file directly using a text editor. Just back it up first and don't screw with the permissions.
-Some other useful apps that help with battery life:
*CPU Sleeper (root users)- Shuts off all but one cpu core when the screen is off. This probably isn't required with a good kernel and governor setup (and a stable phone that sleeps well), and if you are running DS Battery Saver this feature is built-in to it. It uses barely any resources whatsoever, so give it a shot.
*Greenify (root users)- This essentially freezes selected apps when they are not in use. They cannot do background tasks or wake your phone when they are not active. When you attempt to open one of the apps it instantly thaws them for use. After you are done with them it freezes them back up. It is quite brilliant really! It eliminates a lot of wakelocks and battery drain from apps trying to update, gather location data, etc. Use with caution though- don't greenify apps that you actually need to have a data flow from or ones that you use widgets for.
*RootDim (root users) - You know how when you are using your phone in bed at night and the screen is just too bright, even on the dimmest setting? This app lets you go even dimmer. Less brightness means less power, so it will reduce battery usage in the process.
-Apps that help diagnose battery drains
*Better Battery Stats - Good for discovering the cause of battery-draining wakelocks. Just uninstall it when you're done using it to diagnose- otherwise it is constantly doing its thing which is not going to help battery life any!
*OS Monitor - See if your CPU is settling down like it should and see what is keeping it busy. It also has a ton of other advanced options and features.
...there's too many apps to list here! Share the ones you like I'll add more later.
-Adjust your advanced Wifi settings
Go to Settings -> Wifi, then hit Menu -> Advanced
Most people agree that Network Notification should be UNCHECKED, Keep WiFi during sleep should be 'Always', and 'Avoid poor connections' and 'WiFi optimization' should be CHECKED.
If you have a noisy wifi router (some Netgears are guilty) that keeps waking your device from sleep with wifi packets you may get better results if you change Wifi During Sleep to 'Never' or 'Only when plugged in'.
-Watch the reboots!
Every time your phone reboots, Android checks the SD card for errors and then runs the Media Scanner to take inventory of all media files. Both processes consume power, so try to limit unplugged reboots. The more files on your SD card, the longer Media Scanner has to work, so get rid of unnecessary files cluttering up your card. You may have some luck using .nomedia files to tag directories to be skipped during scanning. You can also use an app like this to disable the automatic Media Scanning Service. It also lets you scan on demand. Caution- If you don't ever do a scan, then new pictures won't appear in your gallery nor will new music appear in your player.
I'm sure I'll think of some things later that I have forgotten, and I'll discover new things... I'll update this when I do.
Please share your findings so that this can be the best battery saving thread... In the world.
Very interesting and helpful info.
Thank you very much !!! :good::good::good:
Couple things I'd add, especially if you're running a CM-based ROM
Get NoBloat and disable the following:
SuperUser - Get SuperSU instead, less battery drain.
CM Update Checker - Every time I use my phone to go online (I don't have data on 24/7) this thing pops up and wants to check for updates, but never properly gets flushed. Disabling this one app dropped my hourly drain by about 1.5% on CM10

Thanks for this- I just disabled CM Updater.
BTW with JB there's no need to download NoBloat- you can disable most apps (including this one) from the built-in App manager. Settings -> Apps -> All -> CM Updater -> Disable
Here's another trick for a specific type of battery drain: (you don't apply the fix in on your phone though)
Symptoms:
1) Your phone drains its battery while doing basically nothing while connected to your wifi router.
2) BBS shows massive amounts of wlan_rx_wake wakelocks
3) Android OS seems to be a high contributor to battery use
Fix #1: (Found HERE) "Change DTIM value in your router configuration from 1 (default) to 255. This value is usually in Advanced->Wireless tab on most routers."
^Seems to help a lot.
Fix #2: Set a static IP on your phone for your home network. The easiest way to do this is to find out what address range your router uses when it hands out IP address via DHCP, then hard-set an IP on your phone that is not in that range so that there won't be any conflicts with other devices that connect to your network. You'll need to consult your internets and googles to figure out how to get this information from your router, if you don't know how. Once you know a clear address you can use, go into your phones Wifi Settings, long-touch your network name, hit 'Modify', 'Advanced', punch in the static IP you wish to use. This might not be an option on corporate or shared housing wireless routers.
Fix #3: Check ALL computers on your network for the presence of the Dropbox software. Mac, Windows and Linux computers alike. If it is running in the system tray, click it, go into preferences, turn off 'LAN Sync'. This little booger wreaks havoc with wifi locks on some Android devices.

I've found that for whatever reason the built-in app disabler doesn't always work. I still like using NoBloat better.
Second to this, once you do disable a bunch of apps it's good to boot back in to recovery and wipe dalvik/fix permissions.

What ROM are you using and is LTE available in your area?
Awesome guide man, +thanks:good:
Oh this is kinda off-topic but Mattman86 I wanted to ask you, I just installed your Hono CM9 Full Throttle rom and I'm having some issues putting the apps onto my SD-Card. Whenever I move them (through titanium backup or just standard move to sd in settings) whenever my phone restarts the apps disappear and or say "app not installed" then they are a green default android icon and just don't work :\ Also does Wind Kernal work with your 4.0.4 Rom?

I haven't done anything with CM9.
I currently have the ROM in my signature with Wind Kernel 3.5 and Battery Guru along with SetCPU installed and I get roughly 23 hours of battery.

Oh then I'm tripping then haha, I have a question though. I tried installing Liquid Nitro and every time I tend to wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, and wipe system. It just hangs at the LG logo and I haven't had the ability to try out your v7 or for that matter any of the other previous Liquid Nitro. I'll send you a PM since I can't really post in the development section due to my lack of postage xD :cyclops:
On the CM 10.1M3 with wind kernel 1.8, after one day of normal use with WiFi off and Data Off and Location services off I got Google Maps being the worst offender battery wise, the weird part is that I didn't really used maps that day. So even with everything off some service is still eating bat in background.

Battery life tips/tweaks to stop battery drain

When I first got the Note 5 last week, I noticed the battery life wasn't so great. After making some tweaks I've noticed that 1) Android system isn't the number one thing eating up my battery 2) Cell standby isn't consuming more battery than my screen anymore and 3) Screen is the number one thing consuming battery and I'm getting fantastic screen on time. The first attached pic shows stats from my phone being off the charger for almost 8 hours and I was connected to my wireless earbuds via bluetooth and streaming pandora for almost 4 hours while traveling to and from the gym and during my workout (all over the network, no wifi but when I'm home or in the office, I'm always on wifi) plus I had about 1 1/2 hours of SOT. The Second pic is day 2 with 1 day and 2 hours of use with 37% still left and 3 hours of SOT. Also, I have Google Now running, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter constantly running and I maybe lose 1% battery life every hour or longer when I'm not using the phone.. I'd like to thank @rlsroufe for his debloat list because that was a big starting point.. Here's what I did:
-Disable AT&T/Samsung Bloat (Package Disabler Pro)
-Disable S Finder (Package Disabler Pro)
-Turn off motion Gestures
-Turn off S voice
-Turn off or decrease vibrations
-Turn off Google Location History (Huge battery drain, causes play service and/or Android system to go nuts)
-Turn off Android Device manager (Lock Screen and Security —> Device Admin)(Also causes play service drain)
-Disable Unnecessary Sync Service
-If you use Adguard, turn it off when you don't actually need it and just flip the switch when you do
-Turn off S pen Alerts, pen detection, and S pen sound and vibration (will still work exactly the same)
-Turn off Enhance4GLTE (basically voice over LTE, makes cell standby consume a lot of battery)
-Turn off 'Always allow scanning' under advanced wifi settings (Allows apps to serach for Wifi even when wifi is off)
Reboot and enjoy..

I think it was sarcasm.
I had posted this in another thread, but using package disabler to disable "s-finder" seemed to have made a large difference in battery for me. I (personally) usually keep location services and android device manager active, however.
One thing common with many android phones is that for the first couple of days after you first get the phone (or factory reset it), location services tends to draw more power when compared to after you've had it a while. I have nothing to confirm this (and I've been too lazy to try and verify it), but I suspect that location services keeps a cache of cell phone tower locations... so the drain would be higher while its still building up that cache.
Yeah I feel like disabling S finder helped as well.. I consider that samsung bloat as well but I'll add that to the list, thanks. I keep location service on as well but I turn off location history which is what I think was causing stuff to go nuts and def noticed a difference right away. Device manager I don't really use because I noticed if you factory reset your phone via the phone recovery, you still have to sign into your google account before you can do anything with it so that's nice.
Yeah that sounds like a logical theory and could very well be what was draining battery. But literally 2 hours after turning off Enhance4gLTE, cell standby dropped and noticed battery life was a lot better. There's been a few threads on that as well as VoLTE (tmo equivalent) that suggest that's the issue for drain as well.

Can you share your disabled list in Package Disabler Pro please?
Got this via @rlsroufe and @mcdavid
FYI - There's an Extreme (left column) and Basic (right column), I just went with the Basic one. Green Means I left it alone, Orange means I disabled it and Yellow means you can but don't have to. This is for the Tmo variant so some things wont be on this list so I just went one by one and did it just by typing in the last word of the application. Anything that I actually used I left alone but you can mix and match if you want and see what works best for you.

Okay.. So Samsung made this SUPER ambiguous.. But the "Disable Pen Detection" setting.. Are you saying that that toggle needs to be ON or OFF? What does the setting do anyways? I can't understand Samsung's wording in the settings..
Lol yeah, there was a big discussion in anther thread about that. Putting it in the 'Off' position turns it off which is what you want.. I believe it just turns off the feature when you walk away from your s pen and it warns you.. I could be wrong tho but since doing it, nothing has changed with the S pen and it all works the same exact way when I pull the s pen out

Haha, I think there's a setting for what you described (other than pen detection) but have you noticed the battery life is better when that setting is turned off? Or is it not noticeable?
I'm not 100% sure because I did everything pretty much at once. It does say it might help save battery so that was enough for me. Everything has been working great so far tho, finished charging my phone around 12 today, left it for 2 1/2 hours and didn't lose a percent even tho FB, Email, App update and Text messages were coming in so I think it's a combination of everything

So what is the verdict? Off or on?
LOL says in my settings for this "turning off pen detection when the pen is attached can extend battery life".
So i turned mine OFF
My secret is leaving it charging all day, all night, all day etc. That's the only way.

Based on rlsroufe's SQL dump, the option should be ON which disables pen detection.
When you pull the pen out and the phone no longer 'sees' it, it uses the motion detector to see if you are walking away. If you go like 12 steps you get an alert.
Turning this option ON, disables this detection when the pen is attached to the phone.
Hey @oka1 can you please close this thread or disable the comments. I will no longer be supporting it because I no longer have this phone. Thank you

Anyone using Tasker in their Pixel?

I've been loving my pixel and the stock Android experience from an iPhone. Always heard about Tasker but never done into it. Any here use it? Able to share your most used profiles and tasks?
Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
I'm actually a Pixel 2 XL owner but I do use Tasker.
I have several profiles that include:
- Turn WiFi on when I get home
- Turn off mobile data when on WiFi/re-enable when off WiFi
- Lots of file management (putting pictures/videos into the folders of my choosing)
- Turning Bluetooth off after a few minutes if nothing is connected to it
- Show or hide the mobile data icon in the status bar depending on its status
- Disable notifications and enter DND mode when in certain apps such as Google Maps or Instagram
To name a few lol.
I love Tasker, it's definitely my favourite app and the biggest reason it's worth owning an Android over iPhone in my opinion.
If you're new to it, I suggest Googling, a lot. That's how I got started and I've come a long way since!
I used Tasker until I got my pixel 3 XL, which is when I discovered this app called "MacroDroid". It does the same things as Tasker, but the interface is a lot more simpler and intuitive. You should check it out!
I have one that is suppose to automatically cut on my wifi when I range but it's not working. Guess I'll look online again thanks

I use Tasker on my 3XL.
Mainly it disables WIFI, turns off notifications, and starts my music app when I'm in my car, mutes my phone when in meetings, and disables notifications when I have headphones on or connected to my Bluetooth speakers.
I've used Tasker since my first Android device years and years ago. Mute ringer at work (calendar based), start/stop music when my BT headphones are connected/disconnected, change screen timeout for some apps (keep it on longer for ones I specify, 30 seconds for everything else), lock screen rotation in some apps and not others, etc.
It's a steep learning curve but once you get the hang of it you can do some pretty neat stuff.
I need a setting that puts my 3XL into HSPA+ instead of LTE while at work. I have LTE signal, but it's unusable due to others syncinc constantly. HSPA+ runs fine. I can't find an app that's able to do this. I can't even find a widget that will let me make this toggle quickly without rooting.
On this week's podcast...
https://twit.tv/shows/all-about-android/episodes/395?autostart=false
They talked about Tasker and things changing come January 1st...
.
It's a good show when they 'luck out' and get an honest to goodness developer to share thoughts.
I use it to automatically toggle Always On Display. Requires Secure Settings app and root. Basically I make sure it's off when I go to bed and on when the phone is docked in my car (when connected to my car's BT). Used to do a lot more but haven't really needed anything else.
Able to share how you disable wifi? I know theres in option in the settings to only connect to saved networks but it requires wifi scanning to be on. I set up a profile but I don't think it's working. Doesn't turn off my wifi when I leave my network

When you are in your task, click the PLUS to add an action, NET, then WiFi. You can then set it to ON, OFF, or TOGGLE.
Hope that helps.
Must have for an Android, my opinion.
Pixel phone or not. Tasker is in my opinion one of the must have android apps there. It is also one of the best. There can be a small learning curve for new users but once you are in it: oof! The possibilities even without root are amazing! I have been using Tasker since the Samsung Galaxy S3. I remember using the APK version downloaded in early years. But bought the paid some years ago. It is worth it. Seriously.
I have that. I have it set to OFF. Once I get to the main page I long press the task and select "move to exit". Maybe that's where I'm messing up at?

I used to use Tasker for SO MUCH.
Biggest thing I did was that I had automated turning wifi on once I was "close" to home, then once it connected to wifi - turn on ringers, screen brightness, turn off gps, etc (and similarly for going to work).
It helped a LOT with battery back in the day to make sure that GPS was only on when I needed it.
But now I am trying to let android handle that GPS stuff. I noticed in our settings with Pixel / Pie that there isn't even a "battery saving" location mode anymore! You can still try to turn it on via Tasker (after you have given Tasker secure settings permissions) but I am not sure what it really does in that case.
Moving on from that situation, I still use tasker for simpler things such as "profiles" for at work and at home.
And screen rotation only on certain apps, etc.
A side note --- it seems that you really don't need ROOT for much at all anymore, as long as you are willing to hook up to a computer and do some ADB commands to get the secure settings permission, that's really it.
Anyone else have cool ideas to do with Tasker?
WiFi and location one you mentioned are what I want. Ha e the location one set you but need to grant permission. Need to get a cable to sync

Yeah you are correct, the location needs the secure settings permissions. It's real easy to do though.
Since we now only have location ON or OFF (not sure if that is from Pixel, or Android P)
- I don't know if it's worth messing with? (we used to have "High Accuracy (GPS and other connectivity on phone), "Battery Saving" (was cell tower locationing only), "GPS ONLY" (not sure why one would pick that and not the high accuracy)
Unless you want to flat out turn location off when not on GPS (I used to go between battery saving and high accuracy -- and it seems like tasker might let you force that still? I'm just not sure)
Also I think having wifi ON the whole time is really not a battery drain at all anymore.
I say this because I believe there is a bit of a battery drain to have tasker checking all of this stuff all of the time.
I could be incorrect though, hopefully someone clarifies if I am wrong on this.

I use 4G LTE Switch to stay in LTE at work, but I think HSPA+ is one of the options you can select to lock into.

I noticed a difference in battery life when I turned high accuracy off. Forgot I had it off when I used GPS the other day and it was still a accurate. May just leave it off for good
