Rapidly charging? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Is there any indication which I can see on the phone when it does rapid / fast charging?
What to check if my 2 XL doesn't fast charging? I am using included charger and cable, but I found it is terrible slow to charge. When I check the battery setting, it said "3 hours ... until fully charged" something like that

Completely normal
Google has done it intentionally to increase the longevity of the battery

Pixel will initially display "Charging Rapidly" on the lockscreen when you connect the cable. Disappears after a bit, only to return if you disconnect/reconnect.
I find rapid charging to be a bit slower than with the OG Pixel XL. I should let them both discharge and compare.

[Q] Battery charging too slow!?!?!

Charging time for my battery is pretty slow. I takes more than 3 hours from 10% to full! It doesn't matter if it is chraging with the carger or via USB. Is this normal with the Nexus? I had Htc Inspire 4G, and the charging took 2 hours top!
*if i use the phone while charging e.g. play some game, the battery is still draining instead of charging.

You should get better results with an A/C charger but I've seen some wall adapters still read as if its plugged in via USB. You can check by going to settings >> battery while it's plugged in and it should read A/C charging.

What is the max current (mA) the charger you use can provide? Divide the capacity of your battery (in mAh) by the charge current. That is your approximate charge time in hours. I believe most AC chargers can charge with 1A, so a stock GSM battery of 1750 mAh should take less than 2 hours from being discharged to fully charged. Mine does.
The behavior that the GNEX will discharge even while being charged with a non AC charger (including car chargers) when gaming/navigating is not uncommon.

Yes, it's reading A/C charging, but the charger is from alcatel with 400mAh output.

I've been charging it with Alcatel charger with 400mAh output. I'll try with Samsung charger with 5.0V output which says it's equal to 0.7A because I don't have the original (I think i have used it before, but i dont recall that it was any faster).
Could be kernel related issue, since there is an option to "Fast charge" via USB and it's enabled?

its not likely a kernel issue unless you are on some experimental one, but you would be able to easily find out by looking at the forum cause others would have the issue. And if you didn't know the Fast Charge option is to make your phone think its hooked up to a wall port if you are charging from your laptop or if your car charger is only being used a usb port thing.

It's franco kernel, nightly 251, pretty stable from what i've read in the thread. Also, I know what does Fast Charge option do, but I thought that somehow it messed something up. While I was googling for answers, I found some forum, where was mentioned the battery chip that is regulating the power it's using to charge the battery could somehow get messed up. Maybe I have bad batt.
mine battery too takes 3 hours to full charge using stock samsung wall charger. I'm using stock rom and kernel.
Mines takes 1 hr 30 minutes tops with fast charge

You are using a 400mA charger, the gnex comes with a 1A one. Go figure.

That is because the car charger most likely did not short both the data pins out, therefore you notice the discharging phenomenon because the phone will only take in 500mA without the data pins shorted or with kernel fast charge enabled. How is 500mA going to keep up with navigation, GPS and all other tasks?

Also realize that your previous phones battery probably had a lower capacity than the gnex therefore coming from 2 hours, 3 hours isn't that bad for charging a bigger battery

As has been stated get a GOOD quality charger. I might be weird but both my car charger and spare outlet charger came from Verizon. At least when i have had something not work they have been more than happy to open another and fully test in store for however long it takes. Sadly, my last car charger broke and I am too lazy to get another, my solution was to use a car inverter since I charge my other devices regularly on long trips. Plugging in a regular wall outlet from, oddly enough Motorola, does the job just fine. Alas, the majority of chargers my coworkers leave out are for lesser phones and will not even register on my beastly Nexus.
However i think i damaged my charger (original 1Ampere samsung wall charger) when i've been in Malta (i'm from Italy) last August. Before the holyday my nexus charged in 2 hours or less. During the holyday the charger heated a lot more than when using at home and now the charging process lasts about 3 hours. Also, when i connect the charger to the wall (even if the phone is unplugged) i hear a low almost-ultrasonic whistle.
I hope the damage isn't the battery.

I was having this problem when not using the included charger.
It seems that the phone actually requires to be quick charged (8V 2A) up to 65% or so and will then switch to the usual 5V 2A mode when it's reached this point.
As a result when I was using a regular charger (Nexus 7 charger, 5V 2A) the phone would "charge" but would actually slowly lose battery power during the night.
Gotta watch out for specific usb cables or charger adapters that don't provide enough power (as mentioned above).
I have 2 Nexus 7 FHD (2013) tablets and my Zenfone2 has exactly the same charger, 5.2V 1.35A
A standard cellphone charger is 5V and about 700-800mA.

I turned on Airplane mode and power saver while using a regular 5V Charger, and it was able to charge over night.....just not fully.
I thought I was the only one with this issue. Everything works fine with the included charger but when using my charger from my Nexus 4, it would charge a bit then at times start losing battery. I've used a friend's Nexus 5 charger and it has been hit and miss...sometimes it charges all the way sometimes it charges a bit and then starts losing battery.
Im also using ipad 2 charger..works well as a normal charger for zenfone 2. Especially if your gaming and charging same time..mine does not over heat..but dont recommend to do it always
In fact my question was more about who is charging all night their phones and also who is using his phone when the battery is lower than 15%.
Happy to see some others bugs on the ZenFone 2

Slow charging

I have a issue with my pixel 2 XL charging slow, usually taking 4-6hrs to charge from 15-20 to 100%. I had google troubleshoot it but seems nothing can fix the issue. They asked me to replace my phone twice and I even got new cables and adapter but the same issue alerts occurs again and again. I even tried switching ports and tried outside my house but the charging time is still slow. I even tried in safe mode and still same behavior. Any advice that i could do good with?
Thank you!!
Same here. Went from @ 2 hours to fully charge to now taking 5-8 hours and won't charge at all while being used. Google issued an RMA but the link hasn't worked yet. Talked with 2 other Google reps and no one can figure out the problem. I'm doing advance replacement so I won't be without my phone for 2 weeks.
Hi, i was experiencing the same problem, but I have this workaround and is working, this battery is Li-Ion, so they don't like cold temperatures, install AccuBattery and check battery temperature before charging, try to warm up the battery to 23° or higher to start the fast charging (PD) capability of the Pixel 2 XL, this have worked for me everytime.
Doesn't work. Accubattery is how I knew how slow mine is. 490mA charging versus my daughter's 5x at over 1400mA. My battery is 86°F right now and nothing is different. Tried that after seeing the article last week. Seems mine changed after the February update.
Im experiencing this as well, rather annoying.
From my personal experience I have noticed that my device usually charges at around 3000-3400Mah while the screen is off, once the screen is turned on though it will drop to 1000 or below. This is a feature to keep temperatures down. What does accubattery say your screen off charge rates are? I will also add that I am on a custom ROM.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using XDA Labs
Accubattery shows average of 491 for screen on and screen off.
I noticed that when I first plug in the charger, accubattery shows charging well over 1000mah but after a few seconds it drops back down to the 4-500 range. Temp seems to be irrelevant, it was in the high 90s when I noticed this.
I'm having this 5 hour charge issue as well, but I started using an old moto z play stock charger and the phone now charges in like 1.5 hours. Crazy.
I guess this Picel 2 XL "slow charging" issue is quite a known issue (kinda glad actually for finding out I'm not the only one)
But my problem is that this "slow charging" issue gets even worst, my Pixel 2 XL sometime wont charge at all at the first attempt in plugging in the charging cable. And Now I have to make sure the "charging" icon is there when I plugged the charging cable sothat it will keep on charging till full (kinda annoying actually)
This started to happen to me about a week ago, while before that it only took me 2 hrs or so for having a full charged. anybody else care to share their experience e.q. when this is start happening to you guys or does the "slow charging" attempt always sucessfully charged when you plugged the cable or not (like what Im experiencing right now).
Do you guys return your phone?
Thanks in advance...
I have been using my og pixel XL charger and works way better than the pixel 2 xls. Seems to charge about 5 mins faster.

9 hours?! That's a new longest time record. LOL. You could charge faster with an A to C cable with a regular 2.4 amp charger.

Yes, the one that came in the box
I've had slow charging issues with all the custom roms. Plus the phone in with Ambient display, says slow charging. On a stock Rom, same thing, and it says Charging rapidly, and it charges faster.
Been posting on a few rom threads about this. All sorts of theories. Using stock charger/cable. They work fine with the stock OS installed.

Question Battery charging slow

Hey guys,
hope to get some help here on the forum. I couldnt find any other thread similar to my problem or didnt found it.
So i got the new Pixel 6 Pro and use it out of the box und drained the battery completely. when i wanted to charge the p6p i noticed that it charges really really slow. it took 1 hour to charge 16%. and 2 hours more to 32%. i left the phone charging overnight and noticing in the morning it was at 52% after more then 8 hours of charging.
Im using the original 30w google charger with the original cable from the p6p box. i also tried with my 30w charger from oneplus but didnt work either. i did a soft reset and a hard reset. left it charging with the phone turned off. I tried evertything.
Some of you experiencing the same problem or got any ideas on how to help?
Thanks in adavance.
Try disabling the adaptive charging when you need to top up before bed, this will slow charging rate so you don't overcharge when you have an alarm set that will be coming up within approx 8 hours
i disabled the adaptive charging option and even the intelligent battery option to make sure it charges "normally" but it didnt help.
you need a charger that supports 30W via PD 3 PPS to get fast charging.
OP charger does not suport either and old Pixel charger probbly does not either as this is first for Pixel phones being able to do 30W
i bought the new original 30 watt charger from google (https://store.google.com/de/product/usb_c_30w_charger?hl=de) and i am using the original cable from the p6p box. i just tried the oneplus charger to check if the google pixel 30 watts charger isnt working correctly

Hmm does it say charging rapidly when using the Google charger?
yes it does but it also says 16 hours left of charging
edit: now it says 1,5 hourse left. i will update after this time
now its stuck at 70% and it says full charged in 11 days ...
Have you tried different chargers or cables? Doesn't sound right
i tried different cables and everything ... but now i contacted the support and they change the phone ..

Adaptive charging, if you read the description you need to set an alarm to wake up in the morning, and the battery will be at 100% at that time or just before. So I guess if you don't have one set then it will take forever or never fully charge with those settings on.
I am still thinking of taking this stupid google charger back as there is no point having it and I had to buy it, than that over my older google chargers charging over night at a snails pace.
Even during the day when I plug either in they both say rapid charging, and old charger and new one 30W give the exact same full charge time estimation
If you can't measure what is going on, everything is useless. Get a power meter monitor, something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D316FHM
I have one for USB A and one for USB C. I literally threw away 3/4 of all my USB cables when I found out they were crap.
Just bought one of theses Anker USB C Charger, 65W .
Max power charging was 13.5W (9Vx1.5A), the same as my Pixel 3XL charger so back it went.
*Edit* After reading the article in Post #18 below it looks like the Phone is the problem and not the Anker charger.
I'm still looking...I miss my OnePlus Warp speed charger!
just to keep you up to date. i got a new one in exchange and it works perfectly ... so must have been a "monday model" (broken battery or something) - i am using the same adapter as before
I just got one of the 30W chargers from Google to give that a go
It charges @18W up from 13.5W on the Pixel 3XL charger, so no real benefit and nowhere near the 30W advertised.
Definitely miss the 65w charge from my Xiaomi which charges in less than an hour!
Tested: The Pixel 6 charges much slower than Google implied
The Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro charging is oddly slow despite talk of 30W speeds, taking nearly two hours to fully charge. Here's why.
www.androidauthority.com
for the first time since ive had the phone i let it get to zero and shut down today. Took most of the day to do so, ended up letting netflix play for 5 hours straight and must have been another 3 or 4 hours of tiktok before it died. I wanted to see how long it takes to charge fully. It finally died at 7:21pm and using my pixelbook charger which i think is 45w the p6p said 2 hours exactly to charge to full. Will see if thats accurate or not.

Question Charging the 6 Pro

Hi,
I'm new on Pixel 6 Pro. With every cable (except Huawei) it says from 50 to 100% 1 hour, with every wireless charger from 50 to 100% 1 hour, with the Google 30W charger from 50 to 100% 1 hour ...
can you please explain why?
It's just an estimate. I wouldn't get your hopes up. If the phone starts to get warm, charging will dramatically slow. I'm not sure why the cable makes a difference. It's really how many watts is the charging brick from my experience.
Is your wireless charger a Pixel stand 2?
No, I used the Huawei wireless stand
I see your concern. Yeah, not a very good estimate huh?
Yes, but why with the original 30W Google charger 2 hours from 0 to 100? And any other too? My 10W charger needs 2 hours too

Were pixel batteries failing to such a degree that they saw something needed to be done, other phones have a means to protect your battery life and those same phone typically offer a toggle to enable or disable.
I think the implementation couldve been better.
