2018 Subaru Outback - Connected Car

Hello Everyone,
I traded in my 2014 Subaru Outback for a new 2018 Outback. In my 2014, I removed the original stereo unit and put in a fantastic Android HU with SYGIC GPS, that unfortunately won't fit in my new car. (The old unit is for sale, just sayin')
For the past two weeks, I've been looking to replace the crappy "Starlink" unit in my new 2018, but I'm having difficulty finding one that will install with the current faceplate. I contacted the company that I bought the original one from, and they said that their engineers are working on it, and will take about 6-8 weeks to come up with one. Has anyone found a suitable HU for a 2018 Outback? The issue I have with the HU that came with the car is that the only way to communicate with it is through Bluetooth using a smart phone via the USB input or with Bluetooth. That means wires. It also means having a smart phone, which I don't and NEVER wanted to have. I use the original Motorola V3 RAZR Flip Phones for a number of reasons, and they work just fine.
OR - Does anyone know how I can hack into this "Starlink" unit that came with my car? All I want to do is perhaps root it, or at least install some of my own apps and also to be able to use my hotspot and download stuff. There has to be a 'code' or certain buttons to press to get into this machine, but I haven't been able to find anyone smart enough to figure this one out. I'd be happy to compensate anyone who can help. I did just that with the older HU, so if you can help, just let me know.
Thanks in advance.

BMW Driver's Please help

Hi guys,
Just found this forum and it looks great. Anyhow, i'm the middle of buying my first ever phone/pda and have decided to go for the TMobile MDA III/xda iii.
I have one major issue that needs answering prior to buying it and hopefully someone here might be able to assist.
I drive a 320d sport touring 2004 model, this has the standard bmw business tape player but also has the Bluetooth Phone option installed by factory, currently it works like a dream with my Nokia 6310i.
So, my questions is, Does anyone know if the mda iii would work in my car.
I have tried many BMW forums including bmwland/e46fans etc etc and no one can give me a answer, i have also checked the X5 forum however its not listed on there list.
I hope someone can assist as its the only thing holding me back on buying the unit.
Thanks to all.
Roger
Well I would say to give it a go, there shouldnt be any reason why it wouldnt work. If it didn't work and you bought it from an o2 shop you always have 14 days return guarantee. I have a BMW 7 series but didnt go for the bluetooth option as I have the wired factory telephone kit fitted but just give it a go.

No waY. The MDA III does not work reliably with BMW bluetooth. I've spend hours patching the darn thing. Sometimes it works, most times it doesnt. Somethings badly screwed up here.
stick the widcomm bluetooth drivers on the phone, I bet ur using the crappy microsoft bluetooth stack!
I had the Xda IIs working in an X5 with the standard BT kit, although it occasionally decides to disconnect. No such luck with the iDrive version of BMWs BT kit, pairs up but doesn't work at all. I can't really recommend it for use with a beamer, maybe after the first ROM update is released!
From previous posts on here I'd say the MDA version of the phone has even worse BT so definitely don't go there!
thanks for the reply guy's.
have decided to go for it anyway as i need somethng like a phone / pda.
Cheers

[Q] ELM 327 programs for OBD-II (i.e. Torque Pro) not working with SGN / ICS?

Is anyone having luck with ELM 327 (OBD-II to Bluetooth) adapters working with their Galaxy Nexus and / or ICS?
I never had a problem with my DroidX running 2.3.X but the SGN refuses to link with the adapter. I have it paired, but will not link up once the program (Torque Pro version 1.5.28) is running. I'm able to pair and use all my other bluetooth devices, only the ELM 327 is inop when I run the Torque apk.
Any help or feedback is appreciated.
I have no issues using the free torque.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
No problem here either...
Sent from my GNex using smoke signals.
i am also in the car business,
can you guys tell me where is the best place to buy the blue tooth adapter?

I had problems with the pro version with my previous phones but none with the free version, as others also said.

ebay is a good place, cheap too!
Thanks for the feedback. It's a little humbling having to borrow the wife's phone (which previously was mine) to scan fault codes and do data logging.
...I don't know how she can stand all those damn Words-with-Friends notifications.
Anyway, I'm going to uninstall the paid version today and try the lite version to see if it's a HW problem or a SW bug.
BTW, I bought mine off some generic wed site for $20 shipped. It works, but crashes a lot and constantly requires manual resets (i.e. pull the connector out, and then re-plug it back in). If you are just playing around with the device and occasionally using it to check codes, this is fine. But if you want to do long term data logging, this will cause major headaches and I would recommend buying a more expensive name-brand unit that has better reliability.
Did you pair with it and enter the four digit code(usually 1234)? Also torque has a mild Bluetooth adapter diagnostic section, might want to peek in there.
Yeah, I paired it with "1234" but the program (Torque) won't activate the bluetooth device when it powers up.
I'll have to check the Bluetooth adapter diagnostic section and see if there is any information in there that can help me.
Thanks.
just send the dev an email, he helped me out with some issues a while back
Goofy problem, but I figured it out.
After setting the bluetooth adapter to the ELM 327 device, it was always revert back to the 'U connect' (Chrysler) device from the wife's car even when i was in a different car that war miles away from the Chrysler.
After 'forgetting' the U connect, the ELM 327 device setting would stick. I haven't tried to repair the Chrysler yet, but im not all that concerned since the BT call quality is pretty poopy in the car.
Hi all
I'm able to use the lite version of Torque, but the pro seems to connect/disconnet immediately
i'm alone ?
Mine works perfectly...
I bought a cheap ELM327 Bluetooth of Amazon for $20 and hooked it up to Torque Pro. You have to set up the ELM327 in the device settings in Torque...

Hi mi friend i' have same problem when i start torque pro is disconned, you find a issue?
Thanks.
This is an old thread, but wanted to give my $0.02 for those who reference this in the future...
The quality of the device is key - the cheaper the device, the more chances of a crash. As you upgrade your app (e.g. Torque), it likely queries the devices more often and for more data. So when you have hardware that is not a quality one, the chances of crashing are higher. If you're using it just for scanning DTCs, I would suggest using a cheaper $20 one on Amazon and ebay. If you're using it for a full scan for sensor data, real-time data, etc, then you should probably buy a more expensive one (Kiwi, Scantool, etc) that has a real ELM327 chip.

Android UI mirror to car stereo head unit

Can't recall but I'm pretty sure someone here posted a link of a car stereo head unit replacement kit that will mirror the Androids UI when connected. I searched but couldn't find it.
As much as I like the bluetooth option, I dislike the fact that I can't control my phone via my car stereo.
If someone can point out that post or knows what I'm talking about could you please provide the link.
Just to make some things clear: The unit I speak of is not a stand alone unit with its own built in android os, it actually mirrors the ui of the android phone connected to it. I believe the kit comes with 5" & 7" displays.

I did see that one earlier unfortunately, the company is still working on an Android version. The one I did see was around $200+, this one is over $500.
Found it: http://www.customgadz.com/store/product.php?id_product=16
It's only in pre-order status as of now but if you do in fact pre-order then they'll throw in free of charge a choice of the following:
1) 6.5" or 7" or 8" touch screen
2) OEM switcher add-on type A or type B (*not to sure what those are or what they do*)
The price is listed as AU $169.95 which is USD $178.61
@ryandoubleu: Your post was correct this is in fact the Mimics system.
Android car device
There is an Android 2.2 800Mhz 256MB 8GB 6,2" TFT CAR DVD on sale (800 USD to door in Russia) that I have bought recently and after some software installations it does deliver what I have wanted to have in the car.
Nevertheless there are a few major complaints to its performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cx53a6N7_ws
As well there are several other minor things that would be great to change if possible.
If there is someone interested and able to cook a custom ROM for this device - I can send this device for free as a gift and for experiments. We really want a good ROM for this CA-Fi Car Stereo and the guy's in China don't seem caring enough.
I will check this thread once in a while and provide contact details for anyone interested in developing this device. It is very close to being a great thing for a CAR!
I have updated my email in the XDA profile so you can as well use this option to contact me.
PS
I Have a ROM update file (192MB) that came from the device vendor (dealer). I can send it out for revision.
The way to install this rom on the car stereo is to extract files to the root of a microSD card, insert it, switch off the device, then, while holding the screen tapped, power on – the device starts an install mode. When finished it asks for screen calibration and restarts with a new rom as after a hard reset (erases everything).

Recommendations for an Android based Double Din head unit with navigation, backup cam

Hi everyone!
Wondering if anyone can point me to a decent/good no-name head unit? I have a Ford explorer with a double din opening. Looking for something on the cheaper side but don't mind paying extra at all if it's money well spent.
I work for USPS delivering mail so it would be REALLY NICE to if I could somehow load a route into navigation and have it run from the head unit instead of my phone. Have had problems finding something that works decent even on my phone but think I've found something that sort of works. I am a sub so I'll be learning and helping on many different routes over the next few years and this would be a tremnedious help untill I get the route memorized! Otherwise I wouldn't even worry if it was just one route.
Would also LOVE LOVE LOVE it if I could make the unit become a DVR for a dash cam. Support for multiple cameras would be a huge bonus. But I'm also thinking a dedicated backup camera with DVR support would probably work better...maybe!
Could careless about CD capability.
I've never played with one before to be honest but really hoping for one that can be rooted. I have pleanty of experience with phones and tablets. (I am on a grandfathered unlimited data plan so not worried about data.)
Would also like to consider name brand units if anyone knows which ones are Android based. Alpine is my favorite and don't care much for pioneer but will def consider it if it'll do what I need it to.
I just purchased yesterday a Pumpkin 8.0 direct from their website (autopumpkin.com). Sounds like we are looking for the same functions - navigation, cameras, etc. I am installing this into a 2008 Toyota Tundra, and found the need for a backup camera as soon as I bought it. You didn't define "cheap", This unit is $310 including shipping.
Another unit i considered is the xtron TE706PL. A little cheaper at $290 on Amazon. Both units are 4G ram and 32G rom. I went with the Pumpkin because I wanted the volume knob.
Best of luck in your hunt!
Any update on what you choose and performance?

I have owned an universal Dasaita HU and highly appreciated. I also recommended to my 10 friends to upgrade their entertainment system with Dasaita. They all really enjoyed.
Is there any dedicated app for back view camera of android head unit? Having camera settings etc

Upgrading an old car with connected Tech

I have an old Maruti Swift 2012 model. I want to install it with latest connected car tech such as remote start stop and switching on the AC remotely. These features are available in new cars.
I would like to know from the forum members if this is possible or if if any one has tried it on their vehicles and the cost involved.
