Android messages blank - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I am on the latest version of Android messages via the Google play store but when I go into any message thread the screen is always blank. All my messages via the main screen are there but not when I go into an individual thread. Weird thing is that if I uninstall Android messages so that it goes back to stock then all is fine..but once I update it to latest version..no go. I have even installed the newest version via apk mirror and all is well. Anybody else experience this?

Same here. I cleared data and cache works for a little bit and then does it again, when I update it just crashes.

Which ROM did you come from?
Swype'ed on my CM10 Galaxy Nexus
BAMF.
I did all the wipes needed before flashing.
or am i missing something
Are you getting an error message? Try unlinking your Google account from settings, wiping data from play store, reboot and open play store. You'll have to type in your Google info again but usually fixes it

well, at first is says 'unable to get info' or something like that, then it managed to start downloading but would get stuck at 1 or 2 percent.
also, the google play homepage shows verizon apps, i downloaded another gapps package for xxxxO0C gNex, but still show verizon..
I don't get mine either. Now I use app2zip and flash my old ones in recovery

Reflashed the rom last night, and everything seems to be working fine now :cyclops:
also, in every rom i've tried, none seems to have vibration on phone calls or received messages...
Yeah, i went a different route and tried a restore. Lost root and haven't been able to get it back either.

WhatsApp Initializing issue

Hi,
I just updated to Jelly Bean 4.2, everything is running fine but my WhatsApp.
It keeps on "Initializing" forever. If i wait til it's over, a message will appear:
Failure
Sorry, WhatsApp was unable to complete initialization. Please check that you are connected to the internet and try again.
Please reboot your phone if your connection problem persists
I've uninstalled, reinstalled via google play or downloading the apk from their website/clear data/force close, tried with wifi, 3g and can't get anything different.
I keep receiving messages/notifications but i can't get into the app.
Anyone going through the same issue?
*(i'm all stock, rooted and unlocked. Viber is working fin, but i don't think all this will make any difference)
Whatsapp had in the recent time a lot of problems. Wait some time and try again. You did everything that I would told you to do(like wipe app data, reinstall etc.)
Myn is also not working same problem

thanks for the reply, guys
It's working now after several tries...
I don't know if there's something to do with it, but while my whatsapp was on "initalizing", a received a phone call. When i hang up shortly after, WhatsApp was already at the contacts screen.
Edit:
Installing and downloading the whatsapp.apk directly from whatsapp homepage seems to work.
Same, stuck for over 10 hours.
Fresh 4.2 Install.
Tried everything, most definite its whatsapp server problem.
There is a work around where you install an older version, try to sync and then update.
But you cant see the contacts.
same here... is getting stuck on initializing.... I was able to sync the contacts but I'm not able to enter to the app.... I'm waiting for an update....
server issue
It's a server problem because m facing this issue on iPhone aswell.
It's working well now

Thanks ! Worked for me too : I downloaded v2.8.7268 from Whatsapp website and initialization worked. I then updated from play store.
i was having problem with cm7.1.5 so installed cm7.2...
on 1st start of whatsaap it gave me msg about having custom rom can create problem as it does not support whats app..
then also i proceeded n i was facing same problem.it was stuck on initializing.
then after lots of different tries it worked on one trick...
what i did was :
1.1st backup all my contacts(mobile).
2.then cleared data in contact storage in manage apps.
3.installed whatsapp 2.8 which was backup earlier
4.clicked "Agree and continue" then entered my mobile no. but,it told me that whatsapp new version must be installed.
5.i then upgraded whats app from play store.
6.After installation was complete i opened it and it was started from same step of application of entering mobile no.
7. i entered no. , restored data from old backup of whatssapp, all messages were restored.
now my Display Picture , Name got appeared.
8.clicked next, shortcut of whatsapp was created. in 1 sec it got initialized, n continue button got appeared.
9. now i was having messages but no contacts(whatsapp).
10. now i restored contacts(mobile) from softwere i was using. and now after opening whatsapp m having contacts.
It worked on my phone... try it... best of luck...

[SOLVED] Google now crashes immediately after search...

Recently I started having the weirdest issue.
Immediately after I search for an item in Google Search (either typing or voice) it crashes.
If I don't perform a search, Google now stays up and active and I can use it.
I use STOCK rooted roms. But, It doesn't seem to be rom specific as the issue happens on XXCMH1 & XXCMI1
Is anyone having this issue?
I had this same issue a couple of weeks back. It corrected automatically after an update to google search. So check if u have any updates.

I'm having the same issue running CivZ-FLEX-BEAM-REV3.4 Rom.
I broke down and wiped the entire device thinking it was one one of my apps after serveral attempts to fix by clearing Google Search Data & Cache.
I'm willing to live with it for now until the next CivZ-FLEX-BEAM-Rom is released but I can say that im somewhat relived to see that someone is reporting the same problem on a Stock Rooted Rom.

Like you I also:
1. Deleted Google Search's data,
2. Wiped cache/dalvik cache.
3. I haven't done a full wipe (really don't want to do that.)
Are you saying that it's still broke after the full wipe?
I tried a suggestion from this forum : http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/64445-google-now-search-crashes/
1. I uninstalled the last Google search update, via application manager.
(Immediately Google Search started working)
2. Later, I updated the app via the playstore and now it's working fine even on the latest version.
Maybe this will work for someone else.

Yes I just uninstalled google search altogether through titanium backup and then installed it again directly from the play store. Works fine now and no more crashes . Running Civz 3.4 flex-beam rom with his 2.0 kernel.
I just tried the same from the Link apollostees posted and happy to say no more Google Search crashes.
Thanks for the Link.

[Q] Yet another Google Play Services Error 491 help request, but...

I've tried all of the fixes I've found but nothing works.
I was running rooted stock 4.4.2 and then upgraded to 5.02. (the new UK release from SamMobile). Everything works fine, except Google Play Services. Initially I got the 492 error but cleared that. Now, no matter what I try, it just keeps popping up.
I have TWRP 2.8.7.0 recovery and I have a TWRP back-up from a month ago.
Anyone any new ideas? (apart from delete account reboot, delete cache, data, force stop Google Play Services/Store)
Please?
Pretty please?
Check your time and date.
John.
When you get that error it usually asks you to update google services. Always does for me when I reload lollipop and fixes it every time.
Or just download from the link below.
You need to go to apps settings and check the version number of Google services. You need the last 3 numbers in brackets. Probably 436 if you're on lollipop.

(Guide) To Install Google Floating Dialler on Mi A1 without root or MOD

Hi Mi A1 Device Holders,
I was curious of Google Floating Dialler on my device running Android O. So tried a modded APK from one of the threads. However I couldn't install the mod on to my device when it was in Beta stage. After several attempts.
Now Google have released a new version v17 in which the floating bubble dialer is enabled by default. You may refer to the below link.
https://www.xda-developers.com/enable-google-dialer-floating-bubble-2/.
So I wanted to try it again and went to Playstore and it doesn't allow me to download. Tried downloading and installing from Apkmirror. However I couldn't install it.
But I managed to install it with a small tweak.
Here is the Guide:
1. Hold the Phone app Icon and Click App Info
2. Scroll down to Option Phone App. If it is showing YES, you will not be able to install the new app. So you need to change it NO.
Note: You will not be able to do it without another Dialler app installed on your phone. For this, I installed TrueCaller App and then changed it. You may try with other dialer apps.
3. Install the latest app downloaded from ApkMirror or the one attached below.
4. Again, hold the Phone app Icon and Click App Info and shift the Phone App from True Caller(in my case) to Phone app.
5. You are done.
Enjoy :good:
Hit a thanks if you like it
P.S:
I was using v16 which got automatically updated from Playstore from the previous version. On top of that I installed the V17. My device is not rooted and using stock os...and I find absolutely no issues or lag or whatsoever
well in my case i just installed it and it worked voilaa.... Thanks for link
Thanks for the APK. I was able to install but now I can't search for contacts using T9 dialer. I now need to manually tap the search bar on the top and type in the letters.
Even manually searching is really slow and delayed.
Any fix for this?
Edit: The problem goes away if I roll back to the default Phone app, but comes back once I reinstall the above Apk.
What's going on here?

It's working fine with me.. I find no such issues. You may try clearing the cache/data of the app. See if it helps.

I tried that but it didn't help. Any other ideas?
I figured out the issue! For some reason Google Phone v17 did not work well with Contacts v2.4.
T9 dialling was very slow to search the contacts (10-15 seconds).
I tried everything from reviewing permissions, clearing cache, removing accounts etc. But nothing worked.
Finally I decided to manually check apkmirror and update the Contacts app to v2.5 and presto! Reduced lag when using T9 dialling!!
There is still an ever so slight lag compared to when I roll back to the v13 Google Phone, but it's much more usable now. Hope this helps!

i tried this on my redmi note 4, but when i make a call, history is not logged in new phone app, only in the old one. any suggestions? i hate these gapps [emoji14]
Sent from my Redmi Note 4 using Tapatalk
Have you tried setting the new phone app as the default and disabled the old one?
I was using v16 on January stable build and all was fine then i downloaded apk of v17 from apk mirror and it was also working fine aftert that i changed my rom to new February beta and now after installing v17 when i open phone app a popup appears everytime with a message that this app is not compatible and calls may not work correctly. Even though app was working fine but that popup was irritating me so i modded my phones build prop to pixel xl 2 and now Phone app is compatible with my Mi A1 and i can see it in play store aswell ??????
I was using v16 which got automatically updated from Playstore from the previous version. On top of that I installed the V17 and I find absolutely no issues or lag without build prop changes. Moreover, my device is not rooted for your info...
