I received a Pixel 2 XL that had the low volume in WhatsApp. The phone worked fine in voice calls (and strangely, Heytell), but WhatsApp and Google Allo voice messages were both recorded at an unusually low volume. I reported it to Google, they said it was an app issue. I reported it to whatsapp, they said it was a phone issue. I received an RMA replacement Pixel 2 XL that behaved in exactly the same manner as the first.
I then ordered a regular Pixel 2, and it does not have this issue. The volume recorded in WhatsApp is normal.

I can't say for certain with a sample size of two, but the two I tested had manufacturing dates a month apart. To be audible without the recipient having to enable speakerphone at max volume and hold the speaker to their ear, I have to hold the bottom of the phone very close to my mouth and speak significantly louder than normal. This would seem to be a relatively simple software fix, and Google has been good about pushing out fixes. Without an acknowledgement of the issue and a promised resolution, though, this goes in the negative column with high importance to me and will be enough to sway me to the Pixel 2.
The two Pixel 2 XLs also had displays with noticeably different color temperature, which seemed odd to me. The replacement was much nicer, despite having an earlier manufacture date.

Okay so tested with allo and vol is low
It is certainly a microphone issue
I think in 8.1 dp2 the issue for video recording which was fixed may also be the case for our low volume
So just wait for the update or update to 8.1 dp2 and test
Cheers ?

I don't see any change in volume after updating to 8.1 dp2, sadly.

The exact search term is " Volume+ (Sound Boost) " in the android market . You can copy & paste that into the android market search field minus the quotation marks. The free version doesn't have sound boost in it's title and the volume level won't go up high enough. In preferences in the app, you need to be able to select somewhere between 8-10. Too low, nothing and too high doesn't work either.
Very important, when you download the app for the first time, there is quick one time visual tutorial. Do everything exactly what it says to do, if not, won't work. If you can take screen shots of the directions, your better off. After that one time, you would have to un—install and than re—install to see it again. It only comes up right after the initial install.
The only variance is your volume number in the preferences . Test, if it's working, by listening to the preset ring tones in the system settings of the phone.
I was afraid, that I might of had to exchange the phone because the speaker volume was so bad. This app makes a significant difference.

You can get the full version for free from the developers site which has a link in the Market page of the lite version.
I keep mine set on 10 and it gives me the perfect volume.
It's the way the phone should have come.....
I am surprised samsung or google have not rectified this with the last 2 ota updates.

yeah the voice is still like that in 4.0.2 (usa/lte); almost feel guilty about using navigation, sounds like the poor woman is getting tortured; I run it through my car speakers so it's loud of enough
thanks guys it helps alot

FYI there is an updated version at developers site 1.8.0.6 that adds ability to view the tutorial on demand.
I bought V+ and it helped with some of the settings, but not all. I rooted the phone as well. I might be returning it. It is a big disappointment.
Has anyone tried this with a bluetooth headset? I tried and am not getting any results. Tried "Headset" and tried "Bluetooth" settings, separately and together.

Do you do that natively with a bluetooth head unit. I have a car with bluetooth head unit and when I make a call and I'm using Nav at the same time it plays the Nav through the speakers....otherwise it doesn't.
Wondering if I can do likewise so any information would be greatly received.
Thanks
I had Nokia 7 Plus, it had an issue with the USB port which the service center couldn't fix, so they replaced it with Nokia 8.1
The speaker works well with music and videos, but on call, it's too low. What should I do?

Media volume (music and videos) is different from call volume. Check the call volume when you're in a call. I don't have the device, but this is a common "problem". They should be clear about it, but unfortunately they aren't. Hope it works out for you

I just got a Pixel 3a XL, and I'm disappointed with the sound in recorded videos. There is a distinct hiss that isn't there on videos from my older Original Pixel XL.
Note that I have tried "safe mode" and removed the case, and none of those options help.
I also tried another camera app, and it had the same results... but it probably uses the same video "drivers". I do note that a sound recorder app I have does NOT have the hiss in the background.
I've also rebooted, tried going back a version of the camera app, etc.
I'm on 10 (QP1A.190711.020.C3)
Note you need to have the volume up to hear the hiss. Its really a problem on quiet videos.
Here is a video sample with the 3a XL taken in a very quiet room:
https://youtu.be/kXXLgKA4YU4
And here is a comparative sample taken with my original Pixel XL:
https://youtu.be/hP-LCvBKpf8
To me it almost sounds like there is an automatic audio gain is too aggressive. But it could be a problem with this model, or just my specific phone.
What do you think? Should I exchange this 3a XL or are they all this way?
Anyone? I'm hoping a couple friendly people can check their 3a to see if theirs are the same...
I've never noticed it in any of my previous recordings, but I do have that same high pitch whine if I record using my 3a XL in a quiet room.

Still trying to decide if I should swap this thing...
Yea, can confirm I have a hiss too. It seems to only be in the camera when recording audio as I just tried the recorder app from the pixel 4 and the hiss is no way near as prominent in it. This can be easily fixed through an update though. Google would just need to make the microphone slightly less sensitive for the 3a xl with the camera app.

That is what I am thinking... but I wonder if google will actually notice and fix it.
Anyone else? I'm thinking they are all at like this. But you need a quiet recording and to turn the volume all the way up on your phone to hear it.
I noticed when recording a cat purring loud. I recorded it because I was shocked how loud the cat purred, it was almost a growl. But on playback I had to turn the volume way up, and the hiss obscured the cat purring...
Maybe not a giant problem, but it is significantly worse than my OG Pixel.
Yep, the same. I wrote also about this on reddit.

So that is 4 with hiss to one without, so far...
I've figured it out!
I have attached a video, just like the ones earlier, but now with two features disabled:
Disabled: Voice Match
Disabled: Now Playing
I got this info from here: https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/13897867?hl=en
Some people have also disabled "Pixel Ambient Services" but that did not help me. Others have found just disabling one of the features solved the problem, but others like me needed to disable both.
Here us the video with both "Voice Match" and "Now Playing" disabled. The end result makes the video about the same as my OG pixel video.
https://youtu.be/xlNwh6iozhQ
Many in the google support thread are saying this started with Android 10... so perhaps it will get fixed someday...
Attached screen shots of "Now Playing" setting (disabled) and "Voice Match" setting (disabled)
Please go star this problem on the android issue tracker so it gets fixed!

I bought my phone a few days ago, I had several Whatsapp videocalls with loudspeaker and all calls they hear me loud and clear. Then a few minutes later they don't hear me at all, I try to change my grip on the device but without success. Anybody getting this microphone issue when calling?
Sometimes it's not the mic but rather the connection not being good. When the connection is not good your voice tend to break off.. Sort of like bits and pieces of your words missing so the other end can't really catch what you are saying.

Thank you for your suggestion but its not the connection from either side since the call was on highspeed fiberoptic wifi (250mbps/150mbps). And the recipient of the whatsapp call is hearing like a whisper rather then bits and pieces.
So just me got this issue?

try disabling battery optimization for whatsapp. maybe is getting aggressive.
whatsapp app info -> battery -> optimize battery usage -> change filter to show all and disable optimization for whatsapp.

I have this exact same issue. The other side can hear me but the there is a lot of noise. But this doesn't happen on the stock dialer app. My best guess is that this is because whatsapp is unable to make use of both the microphones for noice cancellation

could be the network issue on either you or the other side.
